U.S. Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) talks to reporters after a vote to hold longtime Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress at the U.S. Capitol in Washington

  • Rep. Nancy Mace says there's "a lot of pressure" on Republicans to impeach President Biden.
  • On NBC's Meet The Press, Mace said impeachment is being considered by some in the GOP.
  • She told host Chuck Todd that if the party chooses to hold a vote, she believes it will be divisive.

Rep. Nancy Mace says there's pressure on Republicans to vote to impeach President Biden if the party wins the midterms and gains control of the House.

Mace was on NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday, speaking with host Chuck Todd who asked: "Do you expect an impeachment vote against President Biden if Republicans take over the House?"

The South Carolina congresswoman answered, "there's a lot of pressure on Republicans to have that vote, to put that legislation forward. I think that is something that some folks are considering."

To which Todd responded, simply: "Wow."

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said a GOP-majority Congress might try to impeach the president every week. Kinzinger was referring to Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made impeaching Biden part of her official platform.

Last year, several Republicans filed impeachment articles criticizing Biden's withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, his immigration policies, and his administration's eviction moratorium.

When asked by Todd how she would vote if impeachment was on the floor, Mace said she would look at the evidence and vote constitutionally.

"I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process has been stripped away for anyone," she told Todd.

Mace said if the party chooses to hold this vote, she believes it will be divisive. "Which is why I pushed back on it personally when I hear folks saying they're going to file articles of impeachment in the House," she said.

While Mace voted against impeaching former President Donald Trump, she was critical of his role on January 6, telling CNN that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" in the aftermath of the Capitol riots.

Before January 6, Mace was a supporter of Trump's and even worked for his campaign in 2016.

During the interview with NBC, Todd asked the congresswoman if she would back Trump's presidential bid in 2024.

"I'm going to support whomever Republicans nominate in '24," she said.

World Curling Tour considering conduct policy after 'extremely drunk' curlers ejected from bonspiel https://briefnews.eu/world-curling-tour-considering-conduct-policy-after-extremely-drunk-curlers-ejected-from-bonspiel/ https://briefnews.eu/world-curling-tour-considering-conduct-policy-after-extremely-drunk-curlers-ejected-from-bonspiel/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 10:30:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/world-curling-tour-considering-conduct-policy-after-extremely-drunk-curlers-ejected-from-bonspiel/ CALGARY — In the wake of four curlers being ejected from a bonspiel in Red Deer, Alta., over the weekend, the World Curling Tour says it's now considering a Code of Conduct policy.

The curling foursome of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby was kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic for "unacceptable conduct" that included being "extremely drunk." They were kicked out of the event by organizers on Saturday after breaking brooms, damaging equipment in the locker room and swearing.

Now the head of operations for the WCT says they are going through an internal review to look at what happened in Red Deer. He says they don't currently have any policies around this sort of incident, something they are now looking at.

"This is very uncommon. Very rarely do we deal with incidents like this," Gerry Geurts said. "This went into a direction that was beyond having a few drinks after a game."

Geurts says he was first alerted to the unfolding situation in Red Deer when he noticed the team had forfeited a game.

"That was kind of surprising", he said.

Geurts says he was soon inundated with emails from concerned fans and coaches about the behaviour of the curlers.

"We posted a statement about it immediately on our WCT social media channels."

Geurts says the WCT is now awaiting an official report of what happened to be filed by the organizing committee of the Red Deer Curling Classic.

Red Deer Curling Club responds

Wade Thurber says he's been bombarded by media phone calls from across Canada and internationally asking what happened during the event.

Thurber is the club's facility manager and says the Red Deer Curling Classic has existed for 20 years. This year's event featured 56 teams — 28 men's and 28 women's teams from around the world.

Right now, Thurber says the organizing committee is just trying to get through the event, which wraps up on Monday.

"I had no idea when I started this event I'd be dealing with this," Thurber said.

The committee will spend the next couple of weeks looking over comments and feedback from fans, curlers and coaches about what took place before filing an official report to the WCT, Thurber says.

"We will meet after the fact and discuss what action we're going to take here in Red Deer with these four curlers," Thurber said.

The "unacceptable behaviour" — as Thurber describes it — took place Saturday. The team lost 10-5 against a team skipped by Kody Hartung. Jamie Koe was not on the ice, so the team was playing with three curlers. The teams shook hands after seven ends.

"They went out to curl and they were extremely drunk and breaking brooms and swearing and just unacceptable behaviour that nobody wants to watch or hear or listen to and it was just 'enough was enough,'" Thurber said.

There was also a small hole in the dry wall in one of the locker rooms.

Thurber says the players have been apologetic — including Fry, who has offered to pay for the damages.

Players apologetic after incident

Fry, who is normally a third on Team Brad Jacobs, was serving as a spare with Koe's team at the event. He lives in Calgary, while the rest of the team curls out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

He says a bad lapse in judgment affected the experience for others.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to the fans, participants and organizers of the Red Deer Curling Classic," Fry said.

Skip Brad Jacobs says he's "very disappointed" with what's unfolded and that the team has been in contact with Fry.

"We in no way support that type of behaviour, whether it's displayed on or off the ice. It's absolutely unacceptable. We've shared that with Ryan [Fry]. Really at this point, we're just taking the necessary steps to handle it internally and that's really where we're at." Jacobs said.

Fry was part of the 2014 Olympic gold-medal winning curling team for Canada. He's played in 10 Briers, winning the national title and silver at the world championship in 2013.

"I came to the event to play and enjoy the sport. My actions were truly disrespectful and embarrassing — the committee was right to disqualify us from play."

"I allowed myself to lose control and I offended people with my actions. I wish nothing more than to apologize to everyone individually," Fry said.

Fry has since returned to the Red Deer Curling Club to meet with the members there to apologize. He also issued apologies to everyone affected.

On Monday, Jamie Koe and Chris Schille took to Twitter to also post apology statements.

"Due to a lapse in judgment on Saturday, we contributed to an unpleasant experience for others," Koe said. "Although I removed myself from the last game before it started, the actions from the team led to our disqualification."

Schille says they took their fun a little too far.

"In the time since I have talked with other staff and board members to apologize, and to reiterate that the decision they made was the right one given the position they were put in," Schille posted on Twitter.

  • Some Central American migrants stalled at the US-Mexico border Saturday said they were considering job offers in Mexico in anticipation of difficulties with US authorities.
  • The Mexican government has repeatedly offered jobs to the migrants, saying those who obtained legal status could occupy thousands of vacancies, mostly in the country’s “maquiladoras,” doing factory work.

  • Despite the nearly 6,000 troops deployed along the southern US border, some migrants said they preferred to take their chances at rejection when crossing into the US than choosing to stay in Mexico.

MEXICALI, Mexico (Reuters) – Hundreds of migrants from a caravan of Central Americans were stalled at the US-Mexico border on Saturday, where a handful said they welcomed recent Mexican offers of employment in the face of a hostile US reception.

  • The Trump administration is reportedly considering a new family separation policy for immigrants who cross the US-Mexico border with their children.
  • Instead of forcibly splitting up immigrant families at the border, as authorities did under the “zero tolerance” immigration policy, the parents would face a “binary choice” to be held as a family in detention or have their children released without them.
  • The renewed family separations push is being spearheaded by Trump’s senior policy adviser, Stephen Miller, who reportedly believed that the original “zero tolerance” policy was effective in deterring illegal immigration.

The Trump administration could soon revive its practice of separating immigrant families at the border by offering them a choice between indefinite detention and separation, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing senior administration officials.

The new policy would not exactly replicate the controversial “zero tolerance” immigration policy that caused a public uproar in the springtime, when authorities forcibly split more than 2,500 children from their parents.

‘Birds of Prey’ Considering Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley for Black Mask https://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/ https://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/#respond Thu, 27 Sep 2018 21:20:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/ birds of prey cast black mask

Time for some more (potential) Birds of Prey casting news. Warner Bros. is in the process of casting the female leads of the film, but they also have to lock down someone to play villain Black Mask. Rumor has it that both Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley are being considered for the part, but the casting process has just begun. More on the potential Birds of Prey cast additions below.

Black Mask, a Batman villain who has never graced the big screen, is the villain for the Birds of Prey movie, but no one knows who is playing him yet. According to one report, Sam Rockwell is the man the producers and filmmakers want for the role, but Rockwell is unavailable. So who will don Black Mask’s famous black skull visage? Two names in the running: Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley.

Of these two, McGregor is probably the stronger choice (he’s a better actor0, but Copley is good at playing unhinged psychos as well (see: Elysium). Black Mask, aka Roman Sionis, first appeared in Batman comics in 1985. He’s traditionally portrayed as violent, brutal and even sadistic. He also has a thing for masks, as you probably guessed.

Cathy Yan is helming the female-driven superhero film, which brings back Margot Robbie as Harley Queen. The other day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell joined the film in the role of Black Canary. Other parts waiting to be cast include Detective Renee Montoya, a cop with the Gotham PD, and Cassandra Cain, one of the many Batgirls who is being reimagined as a 12-year-old in the film.

Birds of Prey will hit theaters on February 7, 2020.

Serena Williams: Umpires considering BOYCOTT of tennis ace's next match – 'They’re scared' https://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-umpires-considering-boycott-of-tennis-aces-next-match-theyre-scared/ https://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-umpires-considering-boycott-of-tennis-aces-next-match-theyre-scared/#respond Sun, 16 Sep 2018 17:57:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/serena-williams-umpires-considering-boycott-of-tennis-aces-next-match-theyre-scared/

Serena Williams was beaten in the US Open final last week by Japan’s Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

However, the American star’s behaviour made the majority of headlines in which she was given a code violation after her coach Patrick Mourataoglu appeared to be instructing her from the stands.

The former world No 1 then proceeded to smash her racket and was deducted a point before she was later forced to forfeit a game after she continued her row with umpire Carlos Ramos.

Williams took exception to Ramos and accused him of being a “thief” and insisted he will never officiate one of her matches again “as long as she is on a court”.

And veteran umpire Christianson, who has worked 38 consecutive Opens including the most recent, says officials are scared to umpire in Williams’ upcoming games and an apology is needed if they are to put the incident behind them.

“That’s the worst brouhaha I’ve witnessed in my 40-plus years of tennis officiating,” Christianson said.

“What we’re looking for, we’re looking for an apology from Serena to the official or officials in general.

“And if we don’t get that, there might be a potential boycott of her next match.

“We’ve never had to go to this extent. But officials are scared.

“They’re worried what happened to Carlos could happen to them. You do your job and you’re condemned for it.

“We as officials have no spokesman or advocate for us.

“And we’re not supposed to talk to the press without permission. So we have no way to get our point across. We’re completely muzzled.

“You reach a point in life, you have to make a stand.

Williams is next expected to compete at the China Open which gets underway on September 29.

Last year, Williams pulled out of the tournament over health concerns and was replaced by Alize Cornet.

Trump says ‘not considering’ lifting Russia sanctions, still accused of ‘treason’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-not-considering-lifting-russia-sanctions-still-accused-of-treason/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-not-considering-lifting-russia-sanctions-still-accused-of-treason/#respond Tue, 21 Aug 2018 02:37:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-says-not-considering-lifting-russia-sanctions-still-accused-of-treason/ US President Donald Trump set tongues wagging when he admitted he could potentially “consider” lifting sanctions on Russia if Moscow ever makes concessions and does something “good” for Washington on issues like Syria and Ukraine.

“I haven’t thought about it. But no, I’m not considering it at all,” Trump responded to Reuters’ question about whether he would consider lifting sanctions against Russia. “I would consider it if they do something that would be good for us. But I wouldn’t consider it without that,” he added. “In other words, I wouldn’t consider it, even for a moment, unless something was go — we have a lot of things in common. We have a lot of things we can do good for each other.”

Trump made the comment during an interview with Reuters at the Oval Office on Monday, which covered a range of topics from social media censorship and tensions with Turkey to the Federal Reserve and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ‘Russiagate’ probe. It was unclear which sanctions Trump might have been referring to, just as it wasn’t clear what exactly Russia would need to do to get them lifted.

The #Resistance didn’t care for details, though, to them this was proof of Trump treason:

Trump, who has repeatedly stressed “nobody’s been tougher on Russia than I have,” has introduced a number of sanctions against Moscow, in a continuation of punitive policies that began under his predecessor, Barack Obama in 2014, following the US-backed regime change in Kiev.

First sanctions were imposed on March 6, 2014, ten days before the Crimea referendum, for actions that then-US President Barack Obama said “undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine.” Even though the region’s population overwhelmingly voted to separate from Ukraine and join Russia in March 2014, official US position is that Crimea is part of Ukraine, and that for sanctions to be lifted the peninsula has to be “returned” to Kiev. The US and its allies imposed additional sanctions against Russian officials, companies and individuals, blaming “Russian aggression” for Ukraine’s ongoing internal conflict.

Most recent round of sanctions was announced over unproven allegations that Russia had used a nerve agent against former double agent Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

The move came right after Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) returned from Moscow, where he delivered a letter from Trump, and seemed to sabotage any efforts at diplomacy with the Kremlin. Later a group of hardline US lawmakers from both parties has proposed a “sanctions bill from hell” that would see Russia designated as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Russia has responded to the waves of sanctions by selling off US debt, going from holding $ 176 billion in US treasures in 2010 to just $ 14.9 billion as of May this year.

“If they introduce something like a ban on banking operations or the use of any currency, we will treat it as a declaration of economic war,” Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev said earlier this month. “And we’ll have to respond to it accordingly – economically, politically, or in any other way, if required.”
