KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.—Five days after NASA’s first attempt to fly the massive Space Launch System rocket ended with technical problems, the space agency is ready to try again.

A launch team began fueling the rocket on Saturday morning shortly before the Sun began rising over the Atlantic Ocean waters that encircle the spaceport. The SLS rocket, which is launching the Artemis I mission around the Moon, has a two-hour launch window that opens at 2:17 pm ET (18:17 UTC).

A successful launch would mark the beginning of a 42-day mission that will send the Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit, and test critical technologies such as a heat shield that will protect the spacecraft during a fiery reentry through Earth’s atmosphere. If the mission goes well, Artemis II would follow in a couple of years, carrying humans around the Moon. A lunar landing is planned for later this decade.

NYPD Blue Revival Pilot to Be Reshot, Still in Consideration for Midseason https://briefnews.eu/nypd-blue-revival-pilot-to-be-reshot-still-in-consideration-for-midseason/ https://briefnews.eu/nypd-blue-revival-pilot-to-be-reshot-still-in-consideration-for-midseason/#respond Sat, 11 May 2019 01:29:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nypd-blue-revival-pilot-to-be-reshot-still-in-consideration-for-midseason/

ABC’s NYPD Blue revival won’t be on the fall schedule — but don’t count it out just yet.

The pilot for the Emmy-winning cop drama’s much-anticipated return will be reshot, our sister site Deadline reports, with an eye towards a possible slot in the Alphabet network’s midseason slate. ABC executives are still enthusiastic about the revival, but feel like it needs a bit more work.

A continuation of the groundbreaking 1993-2005 original series, the NYPD Blue revival stars British newcomer Fabien Frankel as Theo Sipowicz, son of Blue‘s iconic cop Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz. Theo is a “hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop,” much like his old man, and is working towards becoming an NYPD detective… while also investigating his father’s murder.

Supernatural alum Alona Tal co-stars as Det. Nicole Lazarus, and Justified vet Rick Gomez plays Detective Craig Pettibone, along with Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup, who reprise their respective roles as Diane Russell and John Irvin. Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton, both of whom worked on the original NYPD Blue, are behind the revival, with Jesse Bochco (son of late franchise co-creator Steven Bochco) directing the pilot.

ABC also passed on a reboot of ’90s Fox cop drama New York Undercover earlier on Friday. The network has, however, placed series orders for black-ish spinoff mixed-ish, chronicling the childhood of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Bow, and a private-eye drama starring How I Met Your Mother‘s Cobie Smulders and based on the graphic novel series Stumptown.

For Your Consideration: Best Actress, Jamie Lee Curtis https://briefnews.eu/for-your-consideration-best-actress-jamie-lee-curtis/ https://briefnews.eu/for-your-consideration-best-actress-jamie-lee-curtis/#respond Tue, 15 Jan 2019 07:07:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/for-your-consideration-best-actress-jamie-lee-curtis/ We’re knee-deep in awards season, with most of the critics’ honors announced, the Golden Globes distributed last weekend, and a full slate of other JV ceremonies lined up on the runaway — all leading up to the big enchilada, the Academy Awards, on Feb. 22. Those nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and over the months-long run-up to that big morning, Best Actress has emerged as one of the most competitive categories; based on the awards and honors thus far, those five slots could go to any of a dozen possible nominees: Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Glenn Close (The Wife), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Nicole Kidman (Destroyer), Viola Davis (Widows), Carey Mulligan (Wildlife), Kathryn Hahn (Private Life), Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade)…

So I realize it’s the longest of possible shots to suggest one more name, and one that hasn’t appeared much of anywhere thus far in The Awards Conversation. But hey, why not nominate Jamie Lee Curtis for Halloween?

Sure, she is (to put it mildly) a dark horse. Genre films are a notoriously hard sell for serious awards contention, and if anyone were to benefit from a moment of kindness towards brilliant acting in horror pictures, it would probably be Hereditary’s Toni Collette. But there’s also a noteworthy precedent here; back in 1987, Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Best Actress for her stellar turn as Ripley in Aliens. Halloween, like Aliens, finds its lead actress returning to the role that made her a star, and playing it with a twist — taking ownership of the character, turning her from the victim of that initial outing into the driving force of its follow-up.

What’s more, the Choose Your Own Adventure-style continuity of this wobbily-connected franchise has allowed Curtis to explore multiple approaches to the character of Laurie Strode, the “Final Girl” of John Carpenter’s original 1978 Halloween, who survives the killing spree of deranged murderer Michael Myers thanks to her pluck, intelligence, and fortitude. The film’s first sequel, Halloween II  (1981), set on the same night as the original, finds Laurie in a state of shock (some of it medically induced) from her night of terror, still fighting and running for her life from this tenacious madman. In Halloween H20 (1998), which continues the continuity of that sequel, she’s doing everything she can to hide from Michael — living under an assumed name, telling no one (not even her family or friends) about That Night — but is still haunted by the trauma.

The new Halloween (which, by the way, is currently available on demand and hits disc next week) tosses out the events of Halloween II and H20, and gives Curtis the chance to imagine a very different kind of Laurie Strode. Though still using that name, she is still in hiding; she lives behind a series of gates, locks, hidden rooms, and security camera, a self-constructed den of isolation, seemingly to better protect herself in the event of Michael’s (in her eyes) inevitable return. But when that moment comes, when she discovers that her stalker and would-be killer has not only escaped but his headed her way, she doesn’t hide. She goes to hunt him down. “He’s waited for me,” she says. “I’ve waited for him.”

But this take on the character, this open interrogation of the idea of victimhood and the psychological toll of survival, isn’t just some clever new approach by screenwriters Jeff Fradley, Danny McBride, and David Gordon Green. They’re investing the character with the kind of rich psychological complexity that you often don’t even see in good dramas. Yes, the nostalgia factor undoubtedly plays a hand in our response to Curtis’s work — but there’s more to it than that. She’s been playing this character for four decades, lived with her and thought about her, and many of us have watched her play it our entire lives, so it’s hard to overstate the audience empathy and emotional baggage here — and when they face off at the picture’s conclusion, you’re absolutely with her. (Also, the funniest thing happens: there’s none of that cheering for the boogeyman business of earlier Halloweens, or Elm Streets, or Friday the 13ths.)

But more than that, outside of the character’s history or the actor’s iconography (and to be clear, she’s never been nominated for an Oscar, because her best work — in films like A Fish Called Wanda, Blue Steel, Freaky Friday, and True Lies — comes in disreputable packages), it’s a powerful, moving performance. The aguish she’s going through on the curb outside the restaurant, unable to even navigate a simple social transaction with her family; the little half-smile after she explains, “He’s waited for me. I’ve waited for him”; the way she tells her daughter, sternly, “I have to finish this” before turning back, offering up a tender “I love you baby,” and meaning it. She makes those turns work. She makes the character real. It’s one of 2018’s best performances. And this is probably the last time you’ll hear anyone say that.

Porsche 911 hybrid reportedly under consideration again https://briefnews.eu/porsche-911-hybrid-reportedly-under-consideration-again/ https://briefnews.eu/porsche-911-hybrid-reportedly-under-consideration-again/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 15:37:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/porsche-911-hybrid-reportedly-under-consideration-again/

The possibility of a hybrid Porsche 911 has come and gone over the years, and right now it seems to have come again.News publication Bloomberg cited anonymous sources who said the company is now looking again at offering an electrified 911. According to Bloomberg, the car would appear later in the next-generation 911’s product cycle, and would offer a 40-mile range in pure EV mode.

There are reasons both for and against this report. In favor of a hybrid 911 is the fact that Porsche is no stranger to hybrid vehicles. Porsche currently offers the second generation of Panamera hybrid; its last halo hypercar, the 918 Spyder, was a plug-in hybrid; and Porsche has been victorious at Le Mans with hybrids. The company even created a hybrid 911 race car way back in 2010. And Porsche has been getting serious about electric vehicles with the Mission E approaching production.

On the flip side, Porsche has been going back and forth on this idea since at least 2014. And just a few months before now, the project was seemingly dead when a Porsche representative officially said the company wasn’t working on a hybrid 911.

All things considered, Porsche’s steady move toward electrification seems to give favorable odds to a 911 hybrid coming in the near future. But all the waffling of the past means the car certainly isn’t guaranteed.

Disney is Pushing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ for Awards Consideration https://briefnews.eu/disney-is-pushing-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2-and-thor-ragnarok-for-awards-consideration/ https://briefnews.eu/disney-is-pushing-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2-and-thor-ragnarok-for-awards-consideration/#respond Tue, 07 Nov 2017 04:47:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disney-is-pushing-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2-and-thor-ragnarok-for-awards-consideration/ Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Thor Ragnarok Awards

We’re heading into the heart of awards season, that time of the year when studios will be releasing the movies that they hope will be nominated for plenty of awards in the coming months. Some will begin with a limited release before rolling out wide in the future, while others have already begun their limited release and are rolling out to more cities in the coming weeks. But there are some movies that were already released earlier this year and it’s time for studios to remind voters about in order to be considered for nominations.

Looking to compete against some of the more prestigious pictures that usually end up in the awards conversation, Disney and Marvel Studios are making a push for both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok awards nominations, and it’s not just in the technical categories like visual effects and make-up.

Disney already has their “For Your Consideration” page set up with the six movies that they hope will be nominated for some awards this season. It comes as no surprise that they’re pushing for their animated features Cars 3 and Coco to get some love, as well as their animated short Lou. Even Beauty and the Beast isn’t an unlikely candidate since Disney’s original adaptation that inspired it was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture, as this was long before the Best Animated Feature category was created.

But it’s somewhat surprising that Disney is entering Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok into a variety of awards races, including Best Picture. Here’s the full slate of wards Disney hopes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will get nominated for:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Awards Consideration

And here’s the full line-up of wards Disney hopes Thor: Ragnarok will get nominated for:

Thor: Ragnarok Awards Consideration

As you can see, Disney is making a push in all the categories that each movie qualifies for. Both of the sequels are nominated in 15 categories, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has one extra nomination, because Disney hopes their disco-inspired “Guardians Inferno” track from the film’s soundtrack will get nominated for Best Original Song.

The technical awards aren’t out of reach for these blockbuster sequels, but the nominations for more major awards such as Best Picture, Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay and all of the acting awards don’t seem likely to come to fruition. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn’t typically go for blockbusters at the Oscars, and most of the various guilds and other prestigious awards usually follow suit.

In recent years since superhero movies became more abundant, The Dark Knight was the only movie that felt like it could come close to a Best Picture nomination, but it didn’t happen. As much as I love both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, neither film quite measures up to The Dark Knight in terms of what the Academy is looking for in movies it hands out statues too.

Having said that, there are a couple acting nominations that don’t seem out of the question. Jeff Goldblum could get a dark horse Best Supporting Actor nomination for his wild turn as The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok, and it would be rather astounding and deserved for Michael Rooker to land a nomination for his key performance as Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But it’s early in awards season, so we’ll have to sit back and see how things play out for the time being.

Would you like to see either of these movies get awards nominations?

Hybrid Toyota pickup still under consideration https://briefnews.eu/hybrid-toyota-pickup-still-under-consideration/ https://briefnews.eu/hybrid-toyota-pickup-still-under-consideration/#respond Sat, 30 Sep 2017 17:43:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hybrid-toyota-pickup-still-under-consideration/

As the de facto debutante ball for pickup trucks, the State Fair of Texas serves up as much sheetmetal as scuttlebutt. After Ed Laukes, the group vice president of marketing for Toyota, told Automotive News reporter Laurence Iliff that powertrains would be “a big piece” of the planned upgrades for the Tacoma, Iliff asked about the possibility of a hybrid pickup. Laukes answered there was “absolutely no reason” a hybrid Tacoma couldn’t be done, and that the need to satisfy CAFE requirements meant “there’s no option that isn’t on the table.” Laukes’ comments echo those of the president of Toyota Canada, who said of hybrid pickups earlier this year, “I’m not saying there’s demand for one today, but we’ve looked at it seriously.”

The statements don’t mean much by themselves; a long, ruthless road separates a carmaker’s war room from the dealer’s showroom, littered with ideas killed during the march from the former to the latter. The hybrid pickup idea has been a wily survivor at Toyota HQ, though. Remember the Toyota A-BAT concept hybrid pickup from 2008? The A-BAT went from imminent arrival to indefinite hold in a year (and with it died Toyota’s plans for a small-displacement diesel). In 2011, Toyota announced a collaboration with Ford to bring a hybrid pickup to market. Less than two years later, the tie-up had gifted the world little more than an acrimony, a public break-up, and assurances that both automakers would keep production hybrid pickups on their big boards.

Battery-assisted haulers are on the way. In January, Ford announced plans for a showroom-ready F-150 hybrid by 2020. Behind-the-scenes types posit the arrival of a next-gen Jeep Wrangler hybrid pickup and a mild hybrid in the Ram lineup. Third-party fleet specialists like Workhorse and XLP plan to sell retrofitted hybrid pickups next year, a development certain to massage consumer hearts and minds; Bob-Lutz-approved VIA Motors expects to move 50,000 such vehicles by itself. Having mulled the idea for so long, and with so much imminent movement in the segment, and with a Toyota hybrid already doing righteous work in the Lexus NX 300h – which weighs about the same as a Tacoma – we don’t envision Toyota staying out of the game for long.

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an incredibly powerful performance in ‘Stronger’ that could lead to Oscar consideration https://briefnews.eu/jake-gyllenhaal-delivers-an-incredibly-powerful-performance-in-stronger-that-could-lead-to-oscar-consideration/ https://briefnews.eu/jake-gyllenhaal-delivers-an-incredibly-powerful-performance-in-stronger-that-could-lead-to-oscar-consideration/#respond Sat, 09 Sep 2017 06:45:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jake-gyllenhaal-delivers-an-incredibly-powerful-performance-in-stronger-that-could-lead-to-oscar-consideration/ stronger movie lionsgateLionsgate

Jake Gyllenhaal has shown for over a decade that he has an impeccable ability to choose roles that can highlight his ever-expanding talents. But his latest role could get him his first Oscar nomination since 2006’s “Brokeback Mountain.”

In “Stronger” the actor plays Jeff Bauman, a free-spirit Bostonian who, like most in the city, grinds out his days so he can race to cheer on his beloved Red Sox, Bruins, or Patriots (depending on the time of year) at a nearby bar with friends and family. But after losing both his legs following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, Bauman suddenly becomes the unlikely face of the “Boston Strong” motto the nation uses to recover. Bringing notoriety to Bauman he never wanted.

Gyllenhaal plays Bauman in two parts. Before the bombing he’s a free spirit who can sweet talk anyone to get his way. And when it comes to his ex-girlfriend, Erin (Tatiana Maslany from “Orphan Black”), he lays on the charm big time, even promising her that he’ll be at the finish line to root her on at the marathon. Which leads to his horrific injury. Following the bombing, the charismatic smile is gone and Bauman is left lost navigating a world alongside family members that can’t get enough of him being a hero after not just surviving the blast but also helping the police ID one of the bombers.

For both versions of Bauman, Gyllenhaal goes all-in, delivering a tour-de-force performance that is the heart and soul of the movie. But the secret weapon of “Stronger” is Tatiana Maslany.

stronger 2 lionsgateLionsgateAs Erin, Maslany plays a woman riddled with guilt as she feels responsible for what happened to Bauman.

Though the horrific event brought them back together, Erin struggles with becoming a part of his close-nit family, especially getting the approval of his often tipsy mother (played by Miranda Richardson). Erin is the person that keeps Bauman driven through his rehab and comforts him during his mental trauma.

A thankless job, it’s her refusal to enable Bauman during his darkest moments that finally makes him realize how vital she is to him and what his life means to others.

Maslany’s performance resembles Amy Adams’ in “The Fighter,” who also played an outsider trying to fit in with the dysfunctional Ward family as she falls for boxer “Irish” Micky Wars (Mark Wahlberg). The role garnered Adams a best supporting actress nomination. Maslany is worthy of the same attention.

At the helm of “Stronger” is David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express”), who once more shows he can direct any genre. But he wisely stays in the background, keeping the storytelling by the numbers. He pushes all the much-deserved attention on his stellar cast.

“Stronger” opens in theaters September 22.

Tails, We Win: McLaren Confirms LT Version of 720S Will Happen, Sports Series LT under Consideration https://briefnews.eu/tails-we-win-mclaren-confirms-lt-version-of-720s-will-happen-sports-series-lt-under-consideration/ https://briefnews.eu/tails-we-win-mclaren-confirms-lt-version-of-720s-will-happen-sports-series-lt-under-consideration/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 11:57:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tails-we-win-mclaren-confirms-lt-version-of-720s-will-happen-sports-series-lt-under-consideration/

–

We find it hard to curb our enthusiasm when it comes to new supercars. Which is why McLaren had barely taken the sheet off the new 720S at the Geneva auto show before we had asked company CEO Mike Flewitt whether he was going to sign off on an even-higher-performance Long Tail version, as with the previous 650S and 675LT.

–

To his credit, Flewitt gave us an answer—and it’s a yes. “The 675LT was a huge success,” he said. “I was delighted from a market perspective, but also internally because we love that car. We have a huge enthusiasm for it. We’ll certainly repeat Long Tail, and now that the LT brand is established, if we announce an LT derivative of a car, then everyone will know what to expect: that it will be lighter, the chassis dynamics will be way sharper, and it will have more power. We’ll definitely repeat that in models going forward.”

–

–

All of which should make things very interesting for both the Lamborghini Huracán Performante and the upcoming Ferrari 488 track derivative, especially when you consider McLaren’s claim that the standard 720S already is very nearly as quick as the 675LT was on track.

–

–

Such willing confirmation also raises another interesting question: whether other McLarens also will be given the LT treatment, with the smaller Sports Series the most obvious recipient. Flewitt confirmed such a move is being given serious consideration in Woking, although a 570S version might not get to carry the same LT branding.

–

“There’s huge potential to do that,” Flewitt told us. “I think that a lighter, faster Sports Series has great appeal, although whether it would be an LT or not is another question. But yes, I’m sure there would be an appetite for it.”
