TV’s erstwhile Murphy Brown will soon cross paths with The Conners.

Five-time Emmy winner Candice Bergen is set to guest-star in the Wednesday, Jan. 13 episode of the Roseanne spinoff as Ben’s mother Barb. She arrives in Landford after an unexpected death and “unveils shocking information from the past.”

According to Deadline, which first broke the news of Bergen’s casting, Barb is highly judgmental of her son’s relationship with Darlene. She has “a superior air and a sharp tongue,” but is “much more agreeable when she’s had a few drinks.”

Bergen is best known for her role on the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown, which ran for 10 seasons between 1988 and 1998. A revival was launched in 2018, but lasted just 13 episodes. She most recently appeared opposite Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest in the Steven Soderbergh film Let Them All Talk, which dropped on HBO Max on Dec. 10.

Upon its return, The Conners will lead into the new Kyra Sedgwick sitcom Call Your Mother, which also launches Jan. 13. As a result, fellow Wednesday-night comedy black-ish will shift to Tuesdays at 9/8c beginning Jan. 26, where it will be paired with Season 2 of sister series mixed-ish. (For additional midseason premiere dates, check out TVLine’s printable January calendar.)

Among ABC’s other Tuesday finales, The Conners (6 mil/0.9, finale grade “A-“) dipped a tenth to tie its series low, while Bless This Mess (3.8 mil/0.6, finale grade “A”) and mixed-ish (2.7 mil/0.5) were steady. For Life (2.2 mil/0.4) ticked down with its penultimate episode to match its season low.

THE CW | The Flash‘s penultimate episode (1.21 mil/0.4, read recap) and Legends of Tomorrow (741K/0.2) were both steady in the demo, while the former inched up to its largest audience in eight episodes.

CBS | FBI: Most Wanted (6.6 mil/0.6) matched its demo low with its freshman finale. An NCIS rerun (7.16 mil) just barely bested The Voice as the night’s most watched program.

NBC | The Voice (7.15 mil/1.0, read recap) led Tuesday in the demo. Ellen’s Game of Games (4.2 mil/0.8) dipped.

The Conners: Coronavirus Crisis Will ‘Absolutely’ Be Woven Into Season 3 https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-coronavirus-crisis-will-absolutely-be-woven-into-season-3/ https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-coronavirus-crisis-will-absolutely-be-woven-into-season-3/#respond Fri, 01 May 2020 21:58:20 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-coronavirus-crisis-will-absolutely-be-woven-into-season-3/

The Conners are about to fall on hard harder times.

Ahead of the ABC comedy’s Season 2 finale next week, the show’s main creative team tells TVLine that the coronavirus crisis will without question be incorporated into Season 3 (which the network is expected to officially order any day now).

“We’ll absolutely be dealing with it,” confirms exec producer Bruce Helford. “We’re a show that reflects reality, so we’re obligated [to address it]. I would think somebody in the family would be taking the jobs no one else wants, [like] working in grocery stories. They’d be taking jobs that put them at risk because they need the money, like most of blue collar America.”

As fellow EP Bruce Rasmussen adds, the Lunch Box — like most restaurants around the world — will almost certainly be impacted by the pandemic. And at home, Dan “may be getting some mortgage forgiveness” on his already-late payments, previews the EP.

“We’re always more interested in the emotional truth of what it’s like to live without a safety net,” explains exec producer Dave Caplan/ “What it’s like to live on the edge when something totally out of the blue like this happens — when you’re already on the edge. It’s a disaster.”

The Conners‘ Season 2 finale airs Tuesday, May 5 at 8/7c on ABC.

Need a few chuckles as your self-quarantine rolls on? Look no further than our latest Quotes of the Week compilation.

Despite the fact that more than 100 series have halted production amid coronavirus concerns, there’s currently still enough fresh fare to fill a gallery of zingers and one-liners. (And if you’re already caught up on this week’s newest episodes, there’s plenty of (free!) vintage TV available for your extended time indoors.)

This time around, we’ve got a shout-out to a beloved cartoon dog on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a strangely timed observation about a Station 19 firefighter’s height, This Is Us‘ appreciation for a certain Watchmen actor and a new Vanderpump Rules motto that’s just scandalous enough to work.

Also featured in this week’s roundup: double doses of The Conners, Legends of Tomorrow and Grey’s Anatomy, plus sound bites from The Walking Dead, Prodigal Son, The Sinner, Last Week Tonight and more shows.

The Conners Kills Off Pivotal Roseanne Character https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-kills-off-pivotal-roseanne-character/ https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-kills-off-pivotal-roseanne-character/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2020 02:17:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-conners-kills-off-pivotal-roseanne-character/ A tragic turn of events put a damper on the celebratory reopening of The Lunch Box on Thursday’s The Conners.

Early into Season 2’s 13th episode, Dan learns — via the obituary page in the local paper — that his estranged father, Ed Sr., recently died. The character was last seen in Season 6 of Roseanne, as portrayed by Ned Beatty.

Ed Sr.’s passing coincided with the return of Dan’s also-estranged half-brother Ed Jr., now played by Shameless‘ Noel Fisher. The character is the late-in-life child that Ed Sr. had with second wife Crystal (Natalie West).

Shortly after TVLine broke the news of Little Ed’s imminent arrival, producers revealed that another long-lost Conner family member, Jackie’s absentee son Andy, would remain out of sight and mind.

“We made a conscious decision that certain years were going to be part of the dream that was revealed at the end of the run of the original Roseanne, and [Andy] was part of the dream,” showrunner Bruce Helford explained. “Andy fell into the same category for us as winning the lottery; [it’s] something we chose not to acknowledge.”

However, fellow Conners EP Sara Gilbert, who also stars as Darlene, left the door to Andy’s return slightly ajar. “In my mind it’s not off the table entirely,” she told us. “I know some of the writers think we’ve waited too long and it wouldn’t work, but I think there’s probably a way to do it.”

The Conners’ Live Episode Will React to Tuesday’s Primary Results Because Politics Hit the Working Class Hardest https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-live-episode-will-react-to-tuesdays-primary-results-because-politics-hit-the-working-class-hardest/ https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-live-episode-will-react-to-tuesdays-primary-results-because-politics-hit-the-working-class-hardest/#respond Sun, 09 Feb 2020 21:42:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-conners-live-episode-will-react-to-tuesdays-primary-results-because-politics-hit-the-working-class-hardest/

This Tuesday night, as the results of the New Hampshire primary for this year’s presidential election trickle in, The Conners will react to the news in real-time, in live episodes taped and broadcast for each coast.

In “Live from Lanford” (airing Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC), Mark for a school report will be watching the results of the New Hampshire primary with Harris, who is apathetic to the electoral process and believes money’s influence in politics means real change is impossible. The rest of the Conners will in turn share their differing takes on why they think everyone should vote, offering the working-class perspective that you may have to vote for a candidate you don’t love but one that will “screw you the least.”

(All of this happens against the backdrop of romance when Louise, played by guest star Katey Sagal, gets an opportunity that might send her away from Lanford, prompting the family to interfere in Dan’s complicated relationship with her by throwing his lady friend a surprise going-away party.)

The idea for not just a live episode but one that reacted, in real time, to ABC News coverage on the Conners’ TV screen, came from series creator Bruce Helford. “So whatever happens, you can blame me!” he told TVLine with a laugh last month at the TCA press tour.

Explaining the decision to add a breaking news twist to the live twist, he said, “I always felt like if you just do a show live, so what? Everybody’s waiting for someone to make a mistake, that’s all it is. We did live on The Drew Carey Show (which Helford also created), but we added an improv element so that things were happening that could go any way and be interesting. And with The Conners, no matter what we do, we’re a little bit supercharged when it comes to politics. Also, they’re working class families and they’re most affected by what’s going on in this country. They’re really getting hit.”

So, as characters stream in and out of the living room where Mark and Harris are watching the primary returns get reported, “They’re going to comment on it, and we’ll see what happens.”

In fact, they will see what happens two times, since the live episode will tape a second time for the West Coast, and thus find the characters responding to different news coverage than they did the first go-round.

“The first time we do it [for the East Coast], it will be early returns. And then later on, it will be more about the results,” Helford noted. “It’s nice, because it gives us a chance to say something meaningful about the process, and say it in a unique, Conners way.”

The calendar might say that December has arrived (as does the gloomy weather), but we have one last bit of November business to address.

Our latest Quotes of the Week compilation looks back on the past seven days of television (which still delivered top-notch dialogue, even with many shows on winter hiatus). So, what made our list this time?

In the attached gallery, you’ll find an epic clapback from Arrow‘s Laurel, some brutal honesty for Prodigal Son‘s title character, The Good Doctor‘s shocking announcement to a colleague and what we think is a compliment for The Walking Dead‘s Michonne.

The Conners Recap: Behold, Season 2’s Best Episode (So Far) https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-recap-behold-season-2s-best-episode-so-far/ https://briefnews.eu/the-conners-recap-behold-season-2s-best-episode-so-far/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2019 01:41:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-conners-recap-behold-season-2s-best-episode-so-far/

Tensions between Jackie/Becky and Darlene over the potential revival of the Lunch Box came to a boil in Tuesday’s brutally funny, Thanksgiving-themed Conners, triggering an act of violence not-so-subtly foreshadowed in the episode’s title, “Slappy Holidays.”

After getting coerced by guilt-trippers-for-hire Mark and Mary, Jackie and Becky reluctantly agree to hit pause on their feud with Darlene and attend Thanksgiving dinner at the main house. As if the chances for fireworks at the gathering were not already sky-high, Dan extends an invitation to gal-pal Louise (Katey Sagal), to which she playfully responds, “You want me at Thanksgiving… people will talk.” Oh, and Harris’ perpetually stoned BFF Odessa is also attending. What could go wrong?!

“Well, it’s 4 o’clock, turkey should be ready, let’s not make this any more unpleasant than it has to be,” an ever tactful Jackie announces upon her arrival, before turning to her high school archenemy Louise and hissing, “Oh, great — you’re here!” We then learn the origin of the bad blood between the pair when Jackie recalls the time her former schoolmate sabotaged her “rifle routine” at their senior talent show because Louise’s garage band “played too long.” And to drive home just how wounded the experience left her, Jackie grabs a broom and performs the ill-fated rifle routine in its entirety (what can’t Laurie Metcalf do?).

Dan quickly intervenes and delivers a dose of tough love to his sister-in-law in the form of the episode’s best zinger: “Here’s a hard truth you’ve needed to hear for some time now. Nobody wins a talent show twirling a toy rifle. Never happened, never gonna, move on!” Jackie swallows the chill pill and agrees to “play nice.”

Although her tenuous cease fire with Louise holds, Jackie’s beef with Darlene flares up the moment the family sits down for dinner. Cue the rapid-fire insults. My favorite: Becky calling Darlene “an old bitter rat in a curly wig.” A dinner delay caused by a slow-roasting turkey moves the action into the living room, which is where the episode’s first bomb is dropped: Darlene learns that Harris lied to her about Odessa’s wonky living situation (she lives alone, which means Harris’ frequent sleepovers have been unsupervised). Jackie — who has been hitting the tequila hard all night — accuses Darlene of being a bad parent for “sleeping around and neglecting [her] kids.” She also takes her to task for assigning herself the role of “the all-mighty decision marker,” before going for the jugular with this beauty: “You think you can replace Roseanne as the mom of this family? What a joke.”

A riled-up Darlene happily takes the bait. “You want to talk about my mother,” she screams at Auntie J. “She spent her entire life trying to fix you. And every time she picked you up, you fell down. Why? Because you’re a loser, and you were the bane of her existence.” That last part pushes Jackie over the edge, as she extends her hand and slaps Darlene across the face. The violent outburst leaves the family shaken, and prompts Dan to finally intervene. His last-ditch diplomatic mission pays off: Jackie and Darlene apologize to each other, and Darlene goes a step further and signs off on* Jackie and Becky’s Lunch Box gambit. (*Or as Jackie puts it, she “rolled over after being forced by others.”)

And with that, peace appears to be restored in the Conner household. Well, relative peace. In the episode’s closing moments, Harris announces her intention to move out because, as she points out to Darlene, “You guys are drunk and fighting and slapping each other.” Well, she’s not wrong.

What did you think of “Slappy Holidays”? Do you agree that it ranks as Season 2’s best episode (so far)? Weigh in below!

Conners Recap: Checks and Balances — Plus, Can Darlene & Ben Make It Work? https://briefnews.eu/conners-recap-checks-and-balances-plus-can-darlene-ben-make-it-work/ https://briefnews.eu/conners-recap-checks-and-balances-plus-can-darlene-ben-make-it-work/#respond Wed, 05 Dec 2018 02:38:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/conners-recap-checks-and-balances-plus-can-darlene-ben-make-it-work/

Fall behind? Read our previous The Conners recap here.

This week on The Conners, Dan loses his patience with Jackie’s unemployed boyfriend, while Darlene gets dating advice from an unexpected source.

Dan is unamused when Jackie gets Peter a $ 3,000 Vespa for Christmas. He agrees to make the necessary repairs, but only for his sister-in-law’s sake. Down at the restaurant, Peter shows up to write Dan a check for the repairs, at which point Dan discovers that Peter and Jackie now have a joint checking account, despite the fact that Peter has nothing to contribute. And if that’s not enough to send Dan over the edge, Peter lets slip that Jackie’s paying for his college tuition. Dan proceeds to rip up the check, then accuses Peter of taking advantage of Jackie. He then threatens to pulverize this wannabe Frasier, who tries to stand up for himself by throwing his intellect in Dan’s face.

The following day, Jackie comes over to write Dan another check, clearly perturbed that her brother-in-law meddled in her relationship. “All you do is give, and all he does is take,” Dan points out. But Jackie doesn’t see it that way, and assures Dan that her relationship is working. She then threatens Dan, saying if he winds up being the reason that this relationship doesn’t work out, she’ll move into his home and bring Bev along with her!

Darlene, meanwhile, pursues a relationship with Ben. Becky tells Darlene that she and Ben are too similar to make it work, but Darlene is certain that she’s finally found the right guy. But when Ben invites Darlene over for a home-cooked meal at his place, the new couple gets into their very first fight; Ben refuses to let Darlene add salt to his recipe, and Darlene storms out.

Afterwards, Darlene discusses her relationship with Blue, of all people, when David is unable to meet for coffee. Blue suggests to Darlene that she might find happiness if she gives up some control and allows Ben to lead in their relationship, an idea which Darlene struggles to entertain. At work, Ben apologizes for upsetting Darlene, and the couple debates whether two alphas can make a relationship work. They ultimately agree that it’s worth a shot, even if it turns out to be a disaster.

Katey Sagal to Visit The Conners https://briefnews.eu/katey-sagal-to-visit-the-conners/ https://briefnews.eu/katey-sagal-to-visit-the-conners/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 02:04:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/katey-sagal-to-visit-the-conners/

The Conners may have lost one iconic TV housewife, but the fractured family is about to find itself in the presence of another. Katey Sagal on Monday was “pleased to announce” (via Twitter) that she’ll appear on an upcoming episode of ABC’s Roseanne spinoff. TVLine has learned that her character Louise will be appear in the Dec. 11 episode (8/7c), titled “O Sister, Where Are Thou?”

Sagal’s ludicrously impressive TV resume includes such beloved roles as Sons of Anarchy‘s Gemma Teller Morrow (for which she earned a Golden Globe Award), Futurama‘s Leela, 8 Simple Rules‘ Cate Hennesy and, of course, Married… with Children‘s Peg Bundy.

Of course, Sagal is but one of many famous faces to pop up in The Conners‘ first season. Previous guest stars include Mary Steenburgen as Marcy Bellinger, who supplied Roseanne with pills prior to her death; Juliette Lewis as David’s girlfriend Blue; Matthew Broderick as Peter, a love interest for Jackie; and Justin Long as Neil, a man with romantic designs on Darlene.

Originally ordered for 10 episodes, The Conners recently received an additional order from ABC, bringing its Season 1 total to 11. The show premiered on Oct. 16 to 10.6 million total viewers and a 2.4 demo rating — on par with where the Roseanne revival had left off.
