The newly announced 2019 Ford Fusion has a built-in modem that allows customers to access a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, monitor vehicle diagnostics, and access other services through an app. But what about Ford owners who aren’t ready to buy a new car just to get those features? FordPass SmartLink addresses this issue with a simple OBD II device that plugs in to 2010 to 2017 Fords and pairs with smartphones.
–
Ford owners who either missed the connected-car boat or chose not to tick that option box at the time of purchase can now press the redo button by installing a device. The service requires a two-year contract, priced at $ 16.99 per month, and the device itself is included as part of that contract. That subscription does not include the price of installation, which Ford says is required to pair to the car and sync key fobs with the owner’s smartphone. The service is exclusive to Verizon smartphone accounts for now.
–

–
In addition to integrating a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, which comes with a 30-day or 1-gigabyte trial (the cost after that has not yet been announced), the device adds numerous services and centrally locates them on the SmartLink app. Users can remotely start, lock, or unlock the car with the touch of a finger. Location services allow for near-live tracking and can be used to set up geofences for the car. Using an accelerometer, the system can also alert users if the car is bumped, broken into, or starts rolling for some reason.
–
–
–
–
–
Ford is currently in the process of equipping and training dealerships for launch of the SmartLink, but it is not yet widely available. Preorders are open, but customers likely won’t get the product until the middle of 2018.

When GE introduced its latest C-series smart light bulbs, the focus was on affordability — as they talked directly to your phone through Bluetooth, you didn’t need a bridge device. That kept them out of touch of voice assistants, however, which meant replacing the whole lot if you wanted hands-free control. Well, you won’t have to rethink your investment from now on: GE has introduced a hub, the C-Reach, that puts its bulbs on WiFi to enable support for Amazon’s Alexa and (by the end of 2017) Google Assistant. As with most smart lighting kits, you can steer lights individually or in groups just by talking to your phone or a smart speaker.
The C-Reach is available on Amazon right now, although whether or not it makes sense depends on what you buy and when. By itself, the hub costs $ 50 — your once-thrifty lighting setup could suddenly cost about as much as its peers. Things get better if you’re starting fresh. A kit with a hub and two basic C-Life bulbs (which only do white light) will sell for $ 65, or $ 50 if you buy on Cyber Monday. A bundle with color temperature-shifting C-Sleep bulbs sells for $ 85, or $ 65 on Cyber Monday. If you don’t need more advanced bulbs from a system like Philips’ Hue, this might represent a bargain.

So you’ve already torn through Stranger Things 2, and you’ve listened to our in-depth breakdown on /Film Daily. What now? Time to theorize about the future of the show, of course, and to examine a possible connection to a smash hit movie that came out earlier this summer. Take a look at the latest Stranger Things theories below. (Spoilers ahead, obviously.)
Let’s organize these in order of plausibility. Remember that theory about how the Dungeons & Dragons game at the end of the first season might predict everything that happened in season 2? That ended up not coming true, but that’s not stopping Nerdist from digging into more D&D lore to predict what may happen in season 3.
In Stranger Things season 2, episode 8, entitled “The Mind Flayer,” Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) suggests a parallel between the malevolent “shadow monster” that’s controlling Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and a character from the game called a mind flayer, which, according to Nerdist, is a member of a race of “psionic tyrants from another dimension that harvest entire races for their own twisted ends and live in an evil, subterranean cave network known as the Underdark.”
The outlet points out that in D&D mythos, there are more powerful mind flayers that exist, known as arcanists and liches, that lean on sorcery to make their powers even more fearsome. The theory goes that because we saw Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) using her special Force powers – the equivalent of sorcery – to close the portal between her world and The Upside Down, that Eleven could be the next victim of the Shadow Monster/Mind Flayer so it can hijack her powers for its own evil plans.
The Duffer Brothers have even hinted at something similar in an interview talking about the ending of the new season:
“The hope we wanted people to get out of it is that this thing [is still out there]. They’ve shut the door on the Mind Flayer, but not only is it still there in the Upside Down, it’s very much aware of the kids, and particularly Eleven. It had not encountered her and her powers until that final episode. Now, it knows that she’s out there. We wanted to end on a little bit of an ominous note on that level.”
Better watch your back, Eleven.
By now, it’s common knowledge that the Duffers were heavily inspired by the works of Stephen King. So it’s not too surprising that we’d see a few hat tips in King’s direction in the new season. EliteDaily may take things a bit too far, though, when they suggest that Stranger Things and It are set in the same universe. The bulk of their reasoning seems to come from a few Twitter posts, which I’d argue just point out homages rather than direct connections:
Bob’s parents are from Maine, and he was haunted by an evil clown when he was a kid which would’ve been in the late 50’s #StrangerThings pic.twitter.com/G1SfJiCHRd
— Stranger Facts (@UpsideDownFacts) October 29, 2017
Finn Wolfhard says the same line in both #StrangerThings and the movie IT pic.twitter.com/70RvYf1AwG
— Stranger Facts (@UpsideDownFacts) October 29, 2017
He also found victory over the clown when he stopped showing fear. #Parallels
— Hunter R????desi (@hradesi14) October 30, 2017
And when he imitates the clown saying, “hey kid you want a balloon?” it is very close to how Pennywise sounds

I’m not buyin’ it. But if you’re the type of viewer that has to convince yourself that there’s a literal link between the two properties, I can’t stop you from doing that. That Mind Flayer theory, though…there may actually be something to that one. What do you think? Is it legit? Does that explain why season 2’s ending was sort of anticlimactic – because the Mind Flayer is watching Eleven and marking her as its next victim? Sound off in the comments below.

Frustrated with the current state of DVD/Blu-ray digital copies and buying movies from online stores like Vudu or iTunes? A new connection between studios and stores may be the best fix we’ll get, now that Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros (but not Paramount and Lionsgate, so far) have linked their libraries to Disney’s Movies Anywhere setup. Confirming rumors from earlier this week, the Keychest-powered system that Disney has used for its own movies since 2014 will now unlock movies from all of those studios, covering over 7,300 titles.
If you haven’t used Movies Anywhere with a Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Lucasfilm flick, it’s very similar to the Ultraviolet system the other studios have focused on until now. Once you create an account you can watch movies through its app and website, or through stores that participate with it, which include iTunes, Amazon Video, Vudu and Google Play. Linking the accounts is relatively painless, and for a limited time, viewers can unlock access to five free movies (Big Hero 6, Ghostbusters (2016), Ice Age Jason Bourne (2016), The Lego Movie) by doing so.

Disney’s own app plays across a number of devices — Apple TV / iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV and Roku — while the other retailers also have apps with varying levels of support. The idea is that now it doesn’t matter where or how you bought a flick, you’ll just have access to it, which is the way things should work.
Movies Anywhere is only available for signup in the US, but it does allow for access internationally if you’re traveling, as well as downloading for offline viewing. As far as other limitations, here are the rules:
- A maximum of 4 concurrent streams (title independent) across a single account
- A maximum of 2 simultaneous streams of the same title per account
- A maximum of 8 registered end-user devices for download per account
- A maximum 16 end-user device registrations during a rolling 12-month period
- End-user devices are registered automatically when a first download is requested
- Downloads expire on offline or deregistered devices after 90 days.
- Any single title can be downloaded to all end-user devices in a single Movies Anywhere account at the same time; provided that viewing across the service for a single title is maximum 2 stream, 8 downloads

At this past CES, Lenovo announced its $ 130 Smart Assistant speaker with Amazon’s Alexa inside. While that device is still listed as “coming soon” on Lenovo’s website, the company isn’t putting any of its smart home ambitions on hold. Lenovo’s new Home Assistant Pack appears to be a pared-down version of the Smart Assistant—one that’s built to connect to any Tab 4 tablet.
The Home Assistant also has the Alexa voice assistant inside, but it’s not as powerful of a speaker as the Smart Assistant. It has a three-watt speaker and two built-in mics with far-field detection designed to pick up your voice from three meters away. The Smart Assistant instead has a five-watt tweet, a 10-watt subwoofer, and eight built-in mics with far-field detection.
Weighing 300 grams, the Home Assistant is basically an accessory version of the Smart Speaker that you can tote from room to room. By itself, it’s akin to Amazon’s Echo Dot—but paired with a Tab 4 tablet, it becomes similar to an Echo Show. Sliding one of Lenovo’s tablets into the Home Assistant’s dock will automatically bring up the “Home Assistant interface,” in which you can ask Alexa to play music, check your calendar, give you weather updates, and more. The tablet will show “display cards” for visual information in addition to the Home Assistant providing voice answers via Alexa.

We’ve seen AI-powered chatbots for almost everything, and now a company called Smartcar has developed one specifically for Tesla electric vehicles. Owners can access any number of features via Tesla’s mobile app, and by logging in via TeslaBot, they can pop open Facebook Messenger to ask questions or send commands. That’s a pretty low bar for use, particularly compared to the Tesla app Smartcar’s founder developed for Google Glass. Of course, most of us don’t have a Tesla yet (at least until the Model 3 comes out), but we could see more tech like this quickly, as Smartcar is already working with Hyundai on its Ioniq platform.

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg and company announced the Facebook Journalism Project — an initiative to repair the social network’s reputation with journalists and help fight the spread of fake news. The project already introduced curated news digests and some general tweaks to the News Feed that will help cut down on clickbait, but the next journalism-focused effort aims to connect users with nearby news outlets and community groups.
In an email exchange with Poynter, a Facebook spokesperson mentioned three new local news products currently in testing: the first lets the moderators of community-linked Facebook groups add a dynamically populated local news section to the page. The content block will pull stories from local publications that can easily be shared into the group for discussion.
A second product will show up for users who have their current city set to public — if your location is set to the same metro area as the publisher of the story you’re commenting on, Facebook will ask you if you want a badge on your comment identifying you as a local.
Finally, a third product will push users to share local news articles with relevant local groups they belong to. The algorithm can also do the reverse and suggest local groups for you to join based on the articles you consume. In this case, Facebook defines a relevant group as one that shares at least three local news links per month, talks about local news and is located in the same metro area as the publisher links it discusses.
According to Facebook, the local badge is live today. The other two products are still in testing, so they may already start showing up for certain groups that fit the criteria. While Facebook does have a vague new mission to spread civility online by connecting people with their community, other hyperlocal social networks like Nextdoor have had trouble dealing with racial profiling, even on non-anonymous platforms.

20th Century Fox has released a new clip from Alien: Covenant and it shows off how the film connects to the last entry in the franchise, Prometheus. While the movie’s trailers have gone to great lengths to make viewers forget about Scott’s disappointing side film, this clip shows that Prometheus will have a role to play in this year’s film.
This is the second prologue that we’ve seen for Alien: Covenant. In February, the studio released a clip that introduced us to the colonists bound for this film’s planet, which happens to also be home to the android known as David, who we last saw as a disembodied head in the last film. It serves as a foreboding look at what we can expect from the next entry, including a callback to one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.
This new clip is designed to bridge the gap between this film and Scott’s underwhelming side entry for the franchise. Prometheus ended with the entire expedition to LV-223 getting killed off, save for David, and the expedition’s archeologist, Elizabeth Shaw. They escaped the world by commandeering the Engineer’s ship, and Shaw explains that she doesn’t want to go home: she wants to look for the Engineer’s homeworld.
That’s pretty much what happens in this clip: we see Shaw reattach David’s head to his body and their work to fix the ship and figure out the location of the Engineer’s homeworld. David puts Elizabeth into stasis for the journey, and he is left with plenty of time to learn more about the advanced aliens, as well as the ship’s deadly cargo. The clip closes with the two arriving at what’s presumably the Engineer’s homeworld, and David’s poised to drop a whole lot of canisters on them. As we saw in Prometheus, this isn’t going to go well. There’s a lot of material crammed into just a couple of minutes, and I can’t help but wonder if this is what the film would have been, had the reaction to Prometheus been a bit more positive.
Alien: Covenant will hit theaters on May 19th.
