Riverdale season four and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part three are going to be arriving this year. With the arrival of the supernatural show last year and the expansion of the Archie Comics universe, there have understandably been lots of questions about how the two worlds of Greendale and Riverdale co-exist. Express.co.uk breaks down the links between the towns.

How are Riverdale and Greendale connected?

Both Riverdale and Greendale are adapted from Archie Comics series and exist in the same universe.

So they are connected with references to the different towns in both shows, suggesting they could be quite close to each other.

Both towns are closely connected even though very different things happen in each series and have their own unique DNA.

There have been references to Riverdale in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina after Ben Button (played by Moses Thiessen) turned up.

The last time fans saw Ben, he died after playing Gryphons and Gargoyles in Riverdale season three.

A couple of students also mentioned Riverdale in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, suggesting the proximity between the two all-American towns.

One Riverdale fans called babytheresnoplane speculated on Reddit that the towns shared mines which could be a major geographical link between the two places.

The user explained that “in the conversation between archie and warden norton, warden norton speaks about where the men paid off to lie about archies involvement with the murder, he says that he himself would hide in the mines by shadow lake”.

They go on to reason that these mines could be connected to the ones in Greendale where Mr Kinkle (Christopher Rosamond) works.

Once more, the locations of the shows feel in touching distance of one another.

Although the shows are ripe for a crossover, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasa has previously ruled this out.

He admitted he’d planned to introduce Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) as a villain at the end of season two of Riverdale but ultimately decided against it.

Aguirre Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly: “It felt like if Riverdale is crime and pulp and all that stuff, then Sabrina could be horror.

“It felt like there was a separation between Greendale and Riverdale — magic should exist in Greendale, but not in Riverdale.”

However, the television executive also suggested the forthcoming run of Riverdale would take a darker path.

Taking to Instagram, he shared a photo with his 524,000 Instagram followers which featured a mock-up of Cheryl Blossom’s (Madelaine Petsch) on a poster for the film Hereditary.

He captioned the photo: “This season on #Riverdale. Horror is where the home is,” along with a series of emojis.

Riverdale returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 9 and Netflix on Thursday, October 10.

The digitization of daily life is making phones and connected devices the preferred payment tools for consumers — preferences that are causing digital payment volume to blossom worldwide.

As noncash payment volume accelerates, the power dynamics of the payments industry are shifting further in favor of digital and omnichannel providers, attracting a wide swath of providers to the space and forcing firms to diversify, collaborate, or consolidate in order to capitalize on a growing revenue opportunity.

Large genetic study finds first genes connected with ADHD https://briefnews.eu/large-genetic-study-finds-first-genes-connected-with-adhd/ https://briefnews.eu/large-genetic-study-finds-first-genes-connected-with-adhd/#respond Wed, 28 Nov 2018 05:29:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/large-genetic-study-finds-first-genes-connected-with-adhd/
Large genetic study finds first genes connected with ADHD

If you have ADHD, chances are higher that your siblings do, too. Estimates differ as to how strong the connection is, but the arrows point in the same direction: genetics helps determine someone’s risk for ADHD. Beyond that, we still have myriad questions and not many answers—which genes play a role? And how do those genes affect someone’s ability to focus or sit still?

Some conditions, like sickle-cell anemia, rest entirely on a single small genetic change; but others, like schizophrenia, rest on a dizzying array of genetic differences, all seemingly linked to an infinitesimally tiny increase in risk.

ADHD is much closer to schizophrenia. A paper published in Nature Genetics this week looked at genetic data from more than 50,000 people, finding 12 different regions of DNA that seemed to play a role in increasing ADHD risk.

Tackling Mental Health Through a Connected Network https://briefnews.eu/tackling-mental-health-through-a-connected-network/ https://briefnews.eu/tackling-mental-health-through-a-connected-network/#respond Mon, 12 Nov 2018 05:31:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tackling-mental-health-through-a-connected-network/

This story is part of a series between OZY and Well Being Trust called Mental States of the Nation, where we explore ways that different states across the U.S. are enforcing and facilitating mental health parity.

Most emergency rooms are designed to treat physical traumas. But many are also poorly adapted to treat mental health traumas and crises — two issues that are on the rise in Tennessee.

“ER doctors are about blood, guts, heart attacks and babies. ERs were not designed to handle the mentally ill,” says Mike Dietrich, vice president of Member Services for the Tennessee Hospital Association, a healthcare advocacy and educational group. He argues that the mental health crisis is partly the state’s own fault. “We spent thirty years underfunding or de-funding the mental health system,” Dietrich says. “The opioid crisis has exacerbated this in a major way.”

Indeed, Tennessee consistently ranks in the top five U.S. states when it comes to substance abuse. And according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health:

It is estimated that 16 percent of Tennesseans ages 18 and up have a mental health or substance use problem, compared to 9 percent for the entire U.S.

However, Tennessee has worked hard to create a collaborative, multi-pronged crisis response system. First developed in 1991, and funded through Medicaid waiver funds and state general funds, the crisis response system includes: a statewide toll-free crisis line, 13 mobile crisis response teams (four for children), eight crisis stabilization units (CSUs), eight walk-in centers (WICs), eight 23-hour observation units, five emergency respite programs, and seven medically-monitored withdrawal management units.

In addition to the crisis response system, Tennesseans who are uninsured or at the federal poverty limit are covered by the Behavioral Health Safety Net — a program from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services that gives proper care to those with serious mental health illnesses. “Tennessee serves all who need help, regardless of their insurance status,” says Morenike Murphy, director of crisis services and suicide prevention with the Tennessee State Department of Mental Health.

Additionally, in 2017, the state put $ 15 million toward pre-arrest diversion programs that aim to help people with mental health or substance abuse issues before incarcerating them. These programs aim to keep “low level offenders” out of the ERs and jails. “We’re trying not to criminalize mental health and create new entrances to the system that aren’t an ER or jail,” says Dietrich.

We need to get back to encouraging states to look at mental health services as a fundamental human right.

Clayton Chau, regional executive medical director for Providence St. Joseph Health

Mental health and substance abuse issues are often ineffectively siloed from one another. “The prevalence of mental health co-occurring with addiction is huge, so we definitely need treatment offerings that address both simultaneously,” says Marshall Moncrief, regional executive director of the Institute for Mental Health for Providence St. Joseph Health. Due to the complicated nature of the mental health crisis and the rapidly growing need for all kinds of services, the state is trying something new to tackle the opioid problem — the Tennessee Recovery Navigators.

This group of ”navigators” are people hired across the state who themselves are in long-term recovery and can serve as an access point to treatment and recovery resources for those struggling with addiction. “We’re excited about new work to embed peer recovery specialists in the crisis services continuum,” Murphy says. “We fully believe that peers can use their lived experience to help people in a time of crisis.”

And while these various crisis management systems may not be perfect, they’re definitely a step in the right direction for Tennessee. “These programs are no silver bullets,” Dietrich admits. “But the state has the right connected framework laid out, they just need to do more of it.”

Clayton Chau, regional executive medical director for Providence St. Joseph Health, adds that, at the very least, states need to make sure that the basic services for in-patient and out-patient care are in place. “We need to get back to encouraging states to look at mental health services as a fundamental human right.”

OnePlus wants to build smart TVs, move into connected home space https://briefnews.eu/oneplus-wants-to-build-smart-tvs-move-into-connected-home-space/ https://briefnews.eu/oneplus-wants-to-build-smart-tvs-move-into-connected-home-space/#respond Mon, 17 Sep 2018 15:19:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oneplus-wants-to-build-smart-tvs-move-into-connected-home-space/

Here’s an unexpected news item that popped up over the weekend: OnePlus, the Android smartphone maker, wants to start making televisions. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau made an announcement on the company forums that a smart TV was on the way. “We are building a new product of OnePlus’ premium flagship design, image quality, and audio experience to more seamlessly connect the home.” Lau said. “We call it: OnePlus TV.”

OnePlus made a name for itself in the smartphone space by shipping high-end, quality smartphones at a low price. There are other Chinese firms, like OnePlus rival Xiaomi, that are also using price as a big differentiator, but OnePlus does business in Western markets like the US and Europe that Xiaomi won’t touch. There have been some bumps along the way, and OnePlus raises its prices every year, but it’s still a good value.

Building a TV certainly seems in the realm of possibility for OnePlus. The company has already released eight smartphones in five years, and it broke into the Western market with zero brand recognition. OnePlus didn’t do this on its own. OnePlus won’t say that Oppo (owned by Chinese smartphone giant BBK) is its parent company, but the two companies are very close. The official line is that OnePlus “leases Oppo’s manufacturing line,” “shares part of the supply chain,” and “shares common investors” with Oppo. This close relationship with Oppo has allowed the company to survive the cutthroat world of launching a new smartphone brand. Consider the companies that have crashed and burned in the US smartphone market around the same time OnePlus was succeeding: Amazon, Facebook, Blackberry, Essential, LeEco, and Nextbit are all dead. Huawei and Xiaomi can’t get a sustained US presence off the ground., and ZTE’s misdeeds in the US have nearly killed the company. OnePlus, somehow, just keeps going.

VW’s $4 billion connected car push includes its own operating system https://briefnews.eu/vws-4-billion-connected-car-push-includes-its-own-operating-system/ https://briefnews.eu/vws-4-billion-connected-car-push-includes-its-own-operating-system/#respond Thu, 23 Aug 2018 17:23:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vws-4-billion-connected-car-push-includes-its-own-operating-system/

VW knows it has to rethink its approach to technology if it’s going to adapt to a world full of electric cars, autonomy and ridesharing services, and that extends to the very software that makes those vehicles tick. The automaker has committed €3.5 billion ($ 4.05 billion) through 2025 for a connected car push that not only moves the company toward a new role as a “mobility services provider,” but will include the development of an in-house operating system, vw.OS, that will govern entire vehicles.

Where conventional cars from VW and other brands frequently have dozens of separate control systems each with their own vendor-specific software, vw.OS would boil things down to just a few systems running on one common platform. This not only promises to greatly streamline self-driving technology, but promises “continuous updates and upgrades.” If it sounds familiar, it should — Tesla already uses a custom platform to both add features and change the performance of its cars.

You’ll first see vw.OS in the I.D. series of electric cars in 2020, right at the same time as VW plans to connect its whole lineup. It’ll also establish a “One Digital Platform” cloud framework that will power the entire Volkswagen Auto Group. It will take several years, but VW is determined to leave its traditional, scandal-ridden past in the dust and become a technological vanguard.

Airport transfers: The best connected airports in Europe revealed – how did the UK do? https://briefnews.eu/airport-transfers-the-best-connected-airports-in-europe-revealed-how-did-the-uk-do/ https://briefnews.eu/airport-transfers-the-best-connected-airports-in-europe-revealed-how-did-the-uk-do/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 06:29:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/airport-transfers-the-best-connected-airports-in-europe-revealed-how-did-the-uk-do/

Airports that are well connected make holidays both much easier and cheaper.

Travel metasearch engine GoEuro has analysed 70 airports in Europe to rank the fastest and cheapest transfers to the centre of the city.

They have highlighted the best connected airports and cities on the continent according to GoEuro’s 2017 prices and times.

“City centre transfer fares for the airports we looked at range from 64p to £25 travelling by either bus or train,” Chris Hall, Country Manager, UK and Ireland at GoEuro told Express.co.uk. “Journey times vary from five to 85 minutes across Europe.”

“Lanzarote and Malaga are the top choices for those wanting to maximise their time on holiday and not waste any money travelling from the airport to the beach, as transfers start from less than £2, when travelling by IntercityBus in Lanzarote and Cercanías Renfe train in Malaga.”

Nice Côte d’Azur was revealed as the most convenient airport in Europe, with a transfer time of just five minutes by train and costing £1.59.

In second place was Lanzarote with a 10 minute transfer from £1.24 by bus.

In good news for the UK, Birmingham came in third place in the rankings, with a nine minute transfer from £2.90 by train.

Unfortunately, such good connectivity was not seen throughout Britain.

“It won’t be a surprise to Londoners, but Gatwick ranked as one of the least convenient airports, based on journey length and price, with a half hour transfer costing nearly £20 by train,” said Chris.

“Similarly, London Heathrow, Luton and Stansted airports all scored in the bottom 10, based on comparatively long journey times from the airport to the city centre and more expensive travel fares.”

Chris’s top tip for saving airport travel is avoiding peak times and investigating railcards.

“Travellers can save money on airport travel if they know when different peak and off-peak travel times start across the UK’s train providers,” he said.

“Ticketing systems can be complicated with off-peak train times varying by up to an hour across different UK cities. Some train providers also accept Railcards, providing a further discount.

“As with all travel, it’s best to research prices as soon as you know you’re travelling, as cheaper tickets sell out sooner.”

Another piece of advice is to consider avoiding flying altogether and going by rail.

“A travel hack worth noting is that flying isn’t always the cheapest or quickest way to get from A to B,” points out Chris.

“Taking into account city transit, security processes and travel times, buses and trains can actually be faster than flying.

“Plus, there’s no need to wait for ages in the airport, and often no limits to how much luggage you can take.

“For example, travellers heading from London to Paris can reduce their journey time by almost 3.5 hours when taking the train instead of plane, while taking the train from London to Amsterdam can shave almost 50 minutes off total journey time.”

Top ten airports to save travellers money and time

1.      Nice Côte d’Azur, five minute transfer from £1.59 by train

2.      Lanzarote, 10 minute transfer from £1.24 by bus

3.      Birmingham, 9 minute transfer from £2.90 by train

4.      Málaga-Costa del Sol, 12 minute transfer from £1.59 by train

5.      Frankfurt, 10 minute transfer from £4.24 by train

6.      Nürnberg, 12 minute transfer from £2.65 by train

7.      Cologne Bonn, 13 minute transfer from £2.12 by train

8.      Prague, 15 minute transfer from £0.79 by bus

9.      Leipzig-Halle, 13 minute transfer from £3.97 by train

10.   Amsterdam Schiphol, 14 minute transfer from £3.71 by train

Is He the Most Connected Man in Africa? https://briefnews.eu/is-he-the-most-connected-man-in-africa/ https://briefnews.eu/is-he-the-most-connected-man-in-africa/#respond Fri, 25 May 2018 07:07:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-he-the-most-connected-man-in-africa/

When Cameroon-born Acha Leke graduated from Stanford with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, he was faced with a choice: launch a startup or gain experience with a consulting internship. He chose the internship — a decision that, 20 years later, has seen him work with presidents and billionaires to effect real change throughout the African continent.

In his 9-to-5 (“more like a 9-to-9,” he says), the senior partner at McKinsey & Company’s Johannesburg office has introduced a new wave of investors to Africa’s economic potential by co-authoring the “Lions on the Move” series; he’s worked to save lives in Uganda and Nigeria, consulted with African companies to boost their performance and helped to open the continent for visa-free travel (admittedly, the Cameroon passport holder had a vested interest there). Meanwhile, during his “5-to-9,” he serves as an angel investor for a dozen African startups, and he’s working to establish a network of schools and universities he hopes will produce generations of African leaders.

When he was 6 months old, Leke moved to Canada so his father could study gynecology and his mother immunology, but as soon as they’d completed their academic work, the family took the first plane back to Cameroon. At 16, a “studious” (his word) Acha moved to Belgium to finish high school before attending college in the U.S. and doing doctoral work on “Dynamic Bandwidth Optimization for Multicarrier Systems.” As a generalist at McKinsey, he seldom uses his telecommunications knowledge these days, but notes: “Engineers know how to solve problems, right?”

Would Leke consider running for president? “That’s not me,” he says believably. “I’m a technocrat, not a politician.”

This one certainly does. After he joined McKinsey in 1998, his first project in Africa took him to Uganda, which by 2000 had already been battling some of the world’s highest rates of HIV infection for more than a decade. Leke and his colleagues hammered out a plan that would allow pharma companies to slash the price of antiretrovirals (a month’s worth of ARVs cost $ 700 in a country where the average annual salary was $ 300) without diluting their core markets or crippling the Ugandan health care system. As a result, the number of Ugandans taking the medication soared from less than a thousand to more than 50,000; the plan was copied by other African countries and, says Leke, “a ton of lives” were saved.

Based at McKinsey’s Atlanta office at the time, Leke says, “Africa kept calling,” so in 2002 he transferred to Johannesburg for what was meant to be one year. He calls it his “best professional decision ever” — and for the self-confessed socialite who once owned a nightclub, it was also the right personal move (he’s a huge fan of his adopted home’s vibrant energy).

In 2010 he persuaded his bosses to set up a second African office, in Lagos, Nigeria, which he ran for four years. That move cemented McKinsey as the leading consulting firm in Africa (it now has six offices there) and, says Adegoke Oyeniyi — a West Africa business and media analyst for U.S.-based AIM Group — “produced a reverberating effect of improved business procedures and standardization” throughout the region.

Instead of “glamorous” private sector clients and global corporates, says Fred Swaniker, CEO of the African Leadership University, more than 70 percent of Leke’s projects have focused on the public and social sectors. Oyeniyi credits McKinsey’s arrival in Nigeria for a “general improvement” in “professionalism and corporate governance” in the country’s public institutions — although a ranking of 125 (out of 138) on the World Economic Forum’s most recent Global Competitiveness Report suggests there is still a way to go.

Over the years, Leke has forged close relationships with many key drivers behind Africa’s transformation — among them President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (the former finance minister of Nigeria), Donald Kaberuka (former president of the African Development Bank) and Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa.

Those contacts came in handy in 2004 when Leke partnered with Swaniker to create the African Leadership Academy, a prestigious high school in Johannesburg that has enrolled pupils from 46 African countries (85 percent on full scholarships). Their vision has expanded to include the African Leadership University (with campuses in Mauritius and Rwanda, and more planned) and the African Leadership Network, a Davos-esque gathering of influencers from across the continent. Leke has “supported everything we’ve done,” says Swaniker, by bringing in funding, serving on committees and even interviewing prospective candidates.

If Leke appears overly generous with his time, that’s probably because he is. Tarryn Govender, his longtime assistant, says she’s tried to put “measures in place” to remedy this, but “if I say no and he says yes, it’s still a yes.” It’s a commitment he justifies when he sees that eight of the last 12 places on the World Bank’s Doing Business rankings are occupied by African countries.

Still, Leke is the first to acknowledge that conditions aren’t always ideal (citing issues like infrastructure, education and business climate), and it’s impossible to ignore the fact that economic growth in Nigeria and other “lions on the move” has slowed recently. Hakeem Belo-Osagie, a Nigerian businessman and ex–government official, notes the stall with concern but insists it “doesn’t invalidate the broad sweep of the argument.” And Leke still sees plenty of opportunity on the continent where he has built a career and an investment portfolio.

With no immediate plans to move on, the 45-year-old knows that “everyone leaves McKinsey at some point.” For Leke, that might mean working with Swaniker “to scale up the African Leadership Group big-time” or joining the public sector — perhaps back home in Cameroon (among the few African countries he’s never worked in).

Would he consider running for president? “That’s not me,” he says believably. “I’m a technocrat, not a politician.”

A technocrat who has the ear of several presidents.
