Democrat Andrew Gillum says he is ending his hard-fought race for Florida governor and has congratulated Republican Ron DeSantis.

Gillum posted a live video on Facebook on Saturday afternoon in which he congratulated DeSantis. Gillum had conceded to DeSantis on election night, but retracted it after the margin between the two candidates narrowed. The race went to a legally required recount, but after an initial machine recount DeSantis still led Gillum by more than 30,000 votes.

US president Donald Trump has paid tribute to the French national team who claimed the World Cup trophy, beating Croatia 4-2 in the gold medal match at Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.

The US head of state also praised Russia for staging “a truly great” tournament, which was also hailed as the “best ever” by the FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.

“Congratulations to France, who played extraordinary soccer, on winning the 2018 World Cup. The USA will host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico after their joint bid was awarded the right to stage the global football tournament at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow.

All hell broke loose in Washington DC on Tuesday when President Donald Trump confirmed that he had congratulated Russian president Vladimir Putin on his recent election victory.

Journalists and Trump critics flooded Twitter with sarcastic remarks, registering their disgust at the news, using the benign remarks as more evidence of his alleged (by some) collusion with the Russian state.

CNN’s national security reporter Zachary Cohen pointed out that both Kim Jong-un and Trump had now congratulated Putin, in an apparent effort to cast Kim and Trump in the same light for the crime of extending congratulations which, in reality, is fairly standard diplomatic protocol.

Daily Beast reporter Adam Rawnsley, also miffed by Trump’s words of congratulations to the Russian leader, used the occasion to bring up the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the UK, accusing Russia of using a “weapon of mass destruction” on British soil, even though there’s no evidence to prove that.

Senator John McCain, who once called Russia “a gas station masquerading as a country” was widely quoted by the media for a tweet in which he accused Trump of insulting “every Russian citizen” by congratulating Putin.

Something which escaped the attention of Zachary Cohen and others, however, was that former President Barack Obama also congratulated Putin on his victory in 2012.

But it didn’t end on Twitter. At the White House briefing which followed Trump’s comments, press secretary Sarah Sanders was immediately inundated with questions about Russia. In fact, the first six questions were about Trump’s comments. It’s lucky there’s nothing else important going on in Washington DC this week. Like, the visit of the Saudi Crown Prince, or the looming government shutdown.

It wasn’t all shock and outrage, however. Some took the more sober approach of pointing out that Trump’s comments were nothing out of the ordinary.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday congratulated Vladimir Putin on his win in Sunday’s presidential election in Russia, the Kremlin said. The two presidents held a phone conversation and spoke in favor of developing of a practical interaction in various areas, including the issues of strategic stability and combating international terrorism and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts in limiting the arms race, according to the statement. It said Putin and Trump also discussed North Korea, Syria, and Ukraine, while the conversation was focused on overcoming problems in bilateral relations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov was quoted as saying on Tuesday he hoped Putin’s win would lead to a thaw in the US-Russia relationship.

How do you know your local car dealer’s ad congratulating the wrong team for winning the 2018 Super Bowl somehow wasn’t a major bust? Because the internet exists, that’s why—and, um, you’re reading about the bizarre commercial here.

So what happened is this: A Subaru dealer in Muskegon, Michigan, was given the opportunity to purchase 30 seconds of local-station air time during the Big Game at the very last minute. This left the dealer scrambling to put together a spot in time, resulting in a silent clip displaying only the business’s website, the logos of its dealership network and Subaru, and “Congratulations Patriots!” In case you missed it, the Patriots didn’t win the game.

According to the dealer’s Facebook response to the kerfuffle, the decision to include congratulatory language for only one team was calculated. The Patriots “had the best chance at winning and even if they didn’t win we would be congratulating Patriots on a great season and get some buzz on social media over it.” Why the gamble? After submitting the ad last Friday, the dealer said, it couldn’t be altered.

As anticipated, the shame-vironment otherwise known as Twitter immediately took notice when confused viewers on Sunday began sharing photos of the obviously erroneous spot. Say what you will about there being no such thing as bad press, but we’re curious what a dealer on the western coast of Michigan was doing taking sides at all in a Super Bowl matchup between two teams based hundreds of miles away. No doubt a couple of photos of Subarus conquering the sort of winter weather that afflicts Muskegon wouldn’t have had nearly the same effect. As the dealer noted in its Facebook response to the ad today: “Superbowl [sic] commercials are all about getting attention for your brand and that’s exactly what we wanted to accomplish.” Well played?

President Donald Trump congratulated Doug Jones on Tuesday night after the Democratic Senate candidate beat Republican Roy Moore in a major upset victory in Alabama.

“Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win,” a tweet from Trump’s account read. “The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!”

It was a conciliatory tone from Trump who in the last week of the Alabama special election ramped up his public support for Moore, even as Moore’s campaign stumbled under the weight of multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct that were leveled against the Republican candidate.

At one point, Trump had sought to link Jones to top Democratic lawmakers, labeling him a “Pelosi/Schumer liberal Democrat,” referencing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Experts have predicted that Jones’ win could spark a gradual shift in the Republican Party’s Senate majority in next year’s midterm election, and, in the near term, potentially threaten Trump and his party’s broader legislative agenda.

Noting the long history of US-Russian relations, Tillerson said that the two countries “share unique responsibilities to uphold international peace and stability, and to cooperate on issues of global importance.”

The otherwise routine congratulatory statement would have hardly attracted attention if not for its timing, a whole three days after Russia marked the 26th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. 

The lack of any congratulatory message from Washington on the day of one of the major Russian public holidays came as an unpleasant surprise to staffers at the Russian Embassy in Washington.

“This is happening for the first time as far as we remember. Draw your own conclusions,” Nikolay Lakhonin, the embassy’s spokesman, told Sputnik news agency on Tuesday, referencing the lack of a congratulatory message Monday. According to embassy sources, Washington broke with a 25-year tradition with its inexplicable silence on the matter this year.

The State Department press service, however, played down the issue, attributing the change in longstanding practice to a reviewed approach taken by the Trump administration with regard to diplomatic protocol.

In a brief comment to TASS news agency on Wednesday, the State Department said that in accordance with new State Department rules, US embassies located in the capitals of respective countries are the ones tasked with handing over congratulatory notes on behalf of Washington.

“We don’t convey congratulations in the form of press releases anymore, but we publish them on our website,” the spokesman said.

However, the new approach seemed to not have taken root as of yet, with Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova saying Thursday that the ministry has so far not received a word of congratulations from the US embassy in Moscow. 

She went on to argue that the State Department’s own explanation is not convincing in the slightest, since “from the beginning of June, Washington has congratulated Italy, Sweden, Georgia, Azerbaijan, the UK, Portugal and Philippines online,” while Russia has missed out.

“There is an impression that our colleagues have mixed something up: either they are in confusion about what practice to follow, or what explanation to provide. It is very hard to understand, what is going on there, the situation is funny,” Zakharova said.

Pointing that by devising opaque explanations the State Department might as well simply want to “justify the lack of knowledge of diplomatic protocol,” Zakharova did not exclude that the situation could be a result of anti-Russian hysteria reaching a new high in the West.

“Perhaps, amid the global anti-Russian panic [they] are literally afraid of saying any kind words to Russia,” she said.

Russia Day has been celebrated since 1992. In 1994, it was declared a public holiday, commemorating the declaration of Russia’s independence from the Soviet Union on June 12, 1990.

This year, over 7 million people took part in the festivities across Russia, according to the Interior Ministry. In Moscow, over 2.5 million people took to the streets to celebrate the occasion. Around 3,000 events were staged across Russia, and saw people marching with national banners, taking part in motorcycle and cycling parades and enjoying summer festivals.

President Trump extended his congratulations to centrist Emmanuel Macron, who defeated far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in Sunday’s French presidential election.

“Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France,” Trump tweeted. “I look very much forward to working with him!”

The White House released a separate statement congratulating Macron as well.

“We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election,” the statement said. “We look forward to working with the new President and continuing our close cooperation with the French government.”

Though Trump did not officially endorse any candidate in the first or second rounds of the French election, he shared a number of similarities with Le Pen.

Both rode a wave of populist, anti-establishment anger, supported Brexit, and called for their countries to adopt a more protectionist stance on the world stage and reject globalization. During the 2016 US presidential election, Le Pen strongly endorsed Trump’s candidacy and believed his win was a boon for the far-right National Front party in France. 

Macron, on the other hand, is a centrist with a finance background whose party, En Marche!, was established just a year ago. He has advocated for deregulation of the economy and for France to maintain a strong presence in the European Union. His decisive win on Sunday demonstrated the French electorate’s rejection of the country’s left and right establishment parties, as well as the extreme right represented by the National Front.
