Jeremy Corbyn has said a second Scottish independence referendum is “not necessary or desirable”. The Labour leader spoke out after SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon claimed he would agree to hold another vote on Scotland leaving the UK if he becomes Prime Minister. In response, Mr Corbyn said: “Labour does not support independence for Scotland and we do not think another independence referendum is either desirable or necessary.”

Speaking on the claims, BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt asked: “Let me ask you specifically about Jeremy Corbyn. So, what indications have you had?

“We’ve all heard his public statements which is that it’s a wait and see effectively, not ruling anything out in relation to offering a second referendum.

“Have you heard more than that? Are there talks going on that is offering more than that?

“Because clearly a Labour win, a Corbyn Government, is on the face of it the SNP’s best route to getting a second referendum.”

Ian Blackford began: “But nobody, whether it’s Jeremy Corbyn or Boris Johnson, can stand in the face of the votes of the Scottish people. They should respect the people of Scotland.”

The BBC presenter interjected: “Well technically they can, can’t they? That’s the reality, they can.”

The SNP Westminster Leader replied: “Well I would simply say that we won the election in 2016, we then won the election to Westminster in 2017, we won the European election.

“We have a triple mandate that we have for an independence referendum, and one thing you can’t do is to stand up in front of the people and say ‘your votes don’t matter’.

“That vote was respected but circumstances change and people have the right to change their mind. In a democracy, people always have the right to change their minds.

“In that referendum, we were told we had to reject independence to protect our place in the European Union and now we’re being taken out against our will. People, in a democracy, when circumstances change, have every right to consider and reconsider their decisions.”

In the 2016 Brexit referendum, Scotland voted 62 percent to Remain compared to 53.4 percent and 52.5 percent to leave in England and Wales respectively.

Polling expert Sir John Curtice suggested substantial gains in Scotland could be possible for Ms Sturgeon’s SNP at the upcoming general election.

Sir John said: “Somewhere around 45 to 50 seats for the SNP at the moment seems perfectly possible.”

Recent opinion polls have given the SNP around 40 percent of the Scottish vote an almost 20-point lead of the Tories and Scottish Labour Party.

This is in part due to the resignation of Ruth Davidson and the confusion over Scottish Labour’s Brexit policy.

Gina Miller was accused of trying to conceal the genuine motive behind her attempts to take Brexit to court, in a tense clash on ITV‘s Loose Women. The anti-Brexit campaigner was confronted with the claim that she was “clearly a Remainer”. Loose Women panellist Jane Moore said that her Remainer allegiances made her court battles over Brexit partisan. 

Ms Miller was confronted with her previous claim that the result of the 2016 referendum had made her “physically sick”. 

Moore told the lawyer and campaigner: “There are so many things with Parliament that you could have gone to court over.

“John Major prorogued Parliament, so on, so on. So, why this? The argument with you, is that when the Brexit vote came through, it made you feel physically sick.

“So, everyone goes you’re clearly a Remainer, and you’re trying to stop the Brexit vote.”

Ms Miller responded: “I didn’t stop the Brexit vote, because the MPs voted to pass Article 50 – even though I wish they had debated it first.”

The investment manager shot to fame in 2016 for ensuring MPs had a vote on triggering Article 50.

She took the Govenrment to court to force them to give MPs a vote on invoking Article 50 and triggering the Brexit process.

She told ITV: “It is what it says in the law. All the other member-states would say, you did that illegally. We won’t trade with you now, we won’t deal with you.”

Jane Moore interrupted: “But that wouldn’t happen would it? Germany would never say, we are not going to sell you cars?”

Moore added: “You have got 17.4 million who knew exactly what they voted for, who knew what leave meant.

“Three and a half years later, we have politicians bickering over the finer points.”

Ms Miller also responded to the news that Jeremy Corbyn had decided to back an early election.

Mr Corbyn told reporters that he was “totally determined” to win it after deciding that the threat of a no deal Brexit was “off the table”.

When the news broke during Loose Women, Ms Miller instantly responded: “Finally!”

In September, Ms Miller won a landmark Supreme Court case establishing that Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament was unlawful.

Manchester United secured their third win of the season on Saturday evening with a 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.

However, their evening was marred when they were confronted by a passenger on the platform of Watford Junction as they prepared to catch the train back to Manchester.

The man – who was filming the incident – initially congratulated striker Romelu Lukaku on his goal against the Hornets.

But things quickly started to turn sour.

Midfielder Marouane Fellaini was seen asking not to be filmed by the man and the Belgian moved to cover the lens of the camera.

However, as the man continued to record the players, security staff were then forced to step in to ask him to move out of the area.

The man argued he was free to stand anywhere on the platform and he became increasingly annoyed and irate after staff repeatedly asked him to move.

“What the f*** are you doing?” the man raged as security asked him to move down the platform.

He then raged: “Don’t talk to me. Don’t speak. I’ll go whereever the f*** I want mate. These people are no better than I am. I’ll f****** go where I want.”

Eventually, a member of the British Transport Police became involved and escorted the man away from the players.

“If they want to get the train home that’s fine. If they’re that skint, then that’s fair enough,” he continued as the police walked with him down the platform.

Manchester United regularly use the train to travel to away games in the south of England – something which appeared to surprise the commuter.

United’s victory over Watford saw Jose Mourinho’s side move up to eighth.

The Red Devils bagged two goals in three first-half minutes to ensure three points on their travels.

While Andre Gray pulled one back for the hosts midway through the second half, Manchester United withstood a spirited fightback from Javi Gracia’s men.

“With this win we keep the same points as Spurs and Arsenal,” Mourinho said.

“We have that distance of four and six points to the other top teams – if we don’t win this match obviously that distance goes a little more.

“They are a good team, they know how to create problems to the top teams.

“And I told the players at half-time – sometimes I am sorry we don’t have a camera in the dressing room because I told them what exactly happened – that it could be a match to win four or five nil, or to be in real trouble.

“In the second half we decreased our intensity, then the goal happened, then the game is open.”

This is a crisis of global dimensions, this is of course a crisis which dominates every element of American official politics, American policy. RT: And they’ve taken over countries like Hungary and Poland already, and Ukraine…

DN: Yes, this is a growth of an extreme. So we consider looking back somewhat further to the 25 years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which was proclaimed to be the end of history, that we were now going to see what capitalism could accomplish with the triumph of liberal democracy, Francis Fukuyama speaking at ‘The End of History’ …it turns out to be have been a completely false assessment of the situation. All the unanswered problems of the 20th century: the basic problem of the nation state system, the reactionary character of private ownership of the means of production, corporate power, all of these issues which led to the First and Second World Wars are with us again, and the fascism.

RT: The difference if we go back to the ‘30s or we go back to the kind of height of radical movements on the eve of World War I is that with the deindustrialization, and we essentially have obliterated unions, we had a diverse press, anarchist publications, the masses. All of that’s gone. So you have a loss of organization as well as a loss of consciousness, which disempowers us in the face of a rising authoritarianism, doesn’t it?

DN: I think it’s important to look at these processes historically. Yes, you could look at these and say ‘we don’t have this, we don’t have that.’ But I think that generally speaking, there is a complex relationship between consciousness and historical processes. In one sense, many of the problems we face are inherited from the unanswered problems of the 20th century: certainly, the impact of Stalinism on political consciousness, the betrayal of revolutions. In the United States – the failure of the labor movement to break with the Democratic Party, its subordination of the working class to the Democrat Party…

RT: Those unions like the Wobblies or the old CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) that wouldn’t essentially surrender, were destroyed…

DN: It’s a bit more complicated. Of course,  the 1930s due to the influence of socialists and communists, there was a huge growth in unionism at that time. But the fatal bargain which the trade union movement made with the Democratic Party led in the long term to disaster. The American labor movement never broke with a two-party system and that underlies all the… many of the problems which of course are confronted today. But if you put it into somewhat broader context, the basic problem is that all of these old organizations of the labor movement based themselves on a national program, on a national policy which was viable to the extent that there existed the possibility of achieving gains on the basis of national reformism. That was true in the ‘50s, and the ‘60s, into the ‘70s. But the situation has dramatically changed. We live in a global economy, highly interconnected, a globalized process of production and financial system – the ruling classes have an international policy in that sense. They organize themselves on an international scale to the extent that the labor movement has remained organized on a national basis, it has been completely incapable of answering this. And so therefore they fall behind various national protectionist programs. Sections of the trade unions support, really support Trump. Our view is that the there’s going to be a reemergence, as there always is, the historical process is difficult but it does tend to work itself through. There’s going to be a revival of an internationalist outlook, a socialist outlook. I think we’re already seeing signs of that. Not just in this country, but internationally…

Around 2,800 far-right PEGIDA activists gathered in the German city of Dresden to mark the group’s third anniversary. They were met by counter-demonstration of liberal activists who gathered under the motto “Dresden without racism.”

Bad weather prevented thousands of people attending PEGIDA’s ( Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West) celebration. Instead of the expected 5,000 crowd, the gathering in Theaterplatz drew around 2,800 people.

Waving German flags and protest signs against refugees, Islam and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the activists waited an hour for organizers to fix a technical glitch on stage before the rally officially got underway.

German publisher, journalist and right-wing political activist, Gotz Kubitschek, addressed the crowd before welcoming the founder of the movement, Lutz Bachmann, who spoke on refugees and the Islamisation of Germany and wider Europe.

Later, newly elected Bundestag deputies of the Alternative for Germany Party (AfD), who worked shoulder to shoulder with PEGIDA to score big in last month’s elections, addressed the crowd.

“We, as the AfD, are of course – first and foremost – doing politics in the Saxony state parliament. But we’re there for the people nevertheless. We are there for the citizens. We are there for the people who have demonstrated every week for four years and it makes us happy to have a dialogue with them and to put our position to the people,” Sebastian Wippel, Political Spokesperson for Saxony AfD, told RT’s Ruptly.

There was a heavy police presence of around 600 officers at the scene as the PEGIDA rally was confronted by a counter-demonstration which protested against the far-right party which entered the Bundestag for the first time since World War II.

The leftist protest organized by the “Herz statt Hetzen” alliance under the motto “Dresden without racism,” was led by the city’s Mayor Dirk Hilbert, who represented the Free Democratic Party (FDP). The gathering was also attended by Martin Dulig of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SDP), and who currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony.

The liberals constantly shouted down the PEGIDA speakers and held up banners with slogans such as, “Diversity instead of Monotony” and “No person is illegal.”

“It is important to point out where the red lines are, where inhibition is no longer tolerable,” Hilbert said at the event.

Apart from the heated verbal exchanges between the rival camps, no major incidents were reported. Police did lead away four people, two from each camp, for minor infractions such as wearing a mask and an unauthorized Communist Party of Germany (KPD) print.

PEGIDA has been exploiting the anti-immigrant agenda since its emergence in Dresden in late 2014. The movement has gained popularity in Germany and beyond, holding rallies against ‘Islamization,’ refugees and Angela Merkel’s so-called open-door migrant policy.

The AfD won almost 13 percent of the vote in the September 24 national elections, making it the third-largest party in the Lower House of Parliament. Some members, though, have distanced themselves from the movement.

Los Angeles (AFP) – Thousands of counter protesters clashed with supporters of President Donald Trump in California on Sunday, leading to more than a dozen arrests, police and witnesses said.

A peaceful protest in Berkeley, outside San Francisco, began turning violent around noon (1900 GMT) as fights broke out with the opposing sides facing off in Martin Luther King Jr Civic Center Park, which was closed to the public.

Hundreds of black-clad leftist “antifa” activists jumped police barricades to confront the small number of Trump supporters who had showed up, despite their “No to Marxism in America” rally having been canceled over fears of violence.

The counter-demonstrators surrounded their outnumbered rivals, chanting: “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” and “Go home Nazi.”

A number of demonstrators with their faces covered were escorted out of the park by police, who reported 14 arrests, mostly for violating a ban on masks, sticks and other potential weapons.

Police in riot gear fired a rubber bullet at a demonstrator who attempted to cross a barricade into the park, according to the Los Angeles Times, while protesters set off smoke bombs.

Joey Gibson, leader of the right-wing Patriot Prayer group, was pepper sprayed by leftist counter-protesters, an AFP photographer saw.

Mother Jones reporter Shane Bauer tweeted that he had been pepper sprayed and posted a video he said showed anti-fascist protesters stomping on and beating an “alt-right” supporter as he lay in the road.

It was one of a number of videos posted on social media purportedly showing black-clad antifa activists physically attacking both pro-Trump demonstrators and journalists.

City officials had denied at least three requests for permits from demonstrations on both sides at the park, they said. 

Amber Cummings, a Trump supporter, had organized the “No To Marxism in America” rally but later asked supporters not to show up out of fears of violence.

Police said a crowd which had reached 4,000 at its peak had largely dispersed by 3:30 pm. 

The clashes followed racially charged violence earlier this month in Charlottesville, Virginia at a demonstration called by neo-Nazis and white supremacists. 

That rally saw a woman killed after an avowed white supremacist rammed his car into a group of anti-racism counter-protesters.
