‘Perpetual confrontation’: MI6 chief lures young Brits into espionage with Russia-bashing https://briefnews.eu/perpetual-confrontation-mi6-chief-lures-young-brits-into-espionage-with-russia-bashing/ https://briefnews.eu/perpetual-confrontation-mi6-chief-lures-young-brits-into-espionage-with-russia-bashing/#respond Mon, 03 Dec 2018 02:35:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/perpetual-confrontation-mi6-chief-lures-young-brits-into-espionage-with-russia-bashing/ The head of MI6, the UK’s intelligence service, hopes to recruit a new generation of tech-savvy spies, with a passionate speech urging graduates to protect the homeland against the arch nemesis who subverts the UK way of life.

“The era of the fourth industrial revolution calls for a fourth generation of espionage,” Alex Younger will say at St. Andrews University on Monday.

If you want to make a difference and you think you might have what it takes…we hope you will step forward.

To lure young Brits into the spy agency who otherwise might not have seen themselves in MI6, Younger paints an image of a clever arch nemesis –Russia– which can only be stopped with the help of brilliant young minds from all sorts of backgrounds, not just by the snobbish Oxbridge graduates typically associated with the service.

A Russian? Must be a spy! – UK military, media accuse Russian reporter of snooping

Fresh blood is needed to defend UK web domains against cyber-attacks, the spread of fake news and interference in domestic politics, Alex Younger will say, at the same time praising the old guard for “exposing” Russia in the highly-controversial Salisbury attack.

Russia, or any other UK adversary, better “not underestimate our determination and our capabilities, or those of our allies,” Younger’s speech warns.

Hardly historic friends and bitter Cold War rivals, the UK and Russia have seen their relations slip to new lows in March, following the poisoning of ex-Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. London immediately pinned the blame for the Salisbury incident directly on the Kremlin, and rejected any idea of an open joint investigation with Russia, insisting its own probe would suffice to make the case and then punishing Moscow with sanctions.

Moscow is also perpetually facing accusations of cyberwarfare against other states and attempts to undermine democracy and to influence the political process within those countries. And despite multiple reassurances that Moscow could not care less about the internal political struggles in foreign states, London and British mass media continue to vilify Russia with bizarre reports, like half of London’s Russian community are spies for the Kremlin.

Claims of ‘Russian meddling’ look particularly hypocritical in the wake of a leak that exposed the Integrity Initiative – a group that claims to be fighting back against ‘Russian misinformation’ – being a clandestine network of influencers that manipulate European politics with the British government’s backing.

The anti-Russia paranoia in the UK arguably reached its peak over the weekend, when military bases across the nation issued security alerts after a Russian TV crew was accused of spying outside the army’s secret cyber warfare headquarters.

  • The coats were reserved for players who were participating in the game.
  • Oliver, one of the top prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft, was sitting out his fourth straight game with a knee injury.

Star defensive lineman Ed Oliver and his head coach, Major Applewhite, got into a bizarre confrontation over a coat during the University of Houston’s Thursday night matchup against Tulane.

The incident came late in the first half when Applewhite walked over to Oliver, who was not dressed due to a knee injury, and told him he was not allowed to wear one of the team-issued, heavy black coats that were reserved for those playing in the game. Applewhite was seen pulling the coat off of Oliver.

‘Solo’ is Star Wars’ toothless confrontation of robot rights https://briefnews.eu/solo-is-star-wars-toothless-confrontation-of-robot-rights/ https://briefnews.eu/solo-is-star-wars-toothless-confrontation-of-robot-rights/#respond Tue, 29 May 2018 19:25:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/solo-is-star-wars-toothless-confrontation-of-robot-rights/

Major spoilers for Solo ahead.

The most interesting character in Solo is a robot. L3-37, voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), is a free-thinking, loud-mouthed Droid who introduces an entirely new concept into the Star Wars universe: robot rights. From the beginning, Droids like R2-D2 and C-3PO were presented as beings with thoughts and personalities of their own. But they also served masters and faced blatant anti-Droid sentiment, like the barkeep who refused to serve their kind in Episode IV. And they were forced to obey humans through restraining bolts, which limited their cognitive functions. We’ve been empathizing with Star Wars’ Droids for decades, but the films haven’t asked us to consider their place in the world until Solo.

So it’s even more disappointing that the movie completely drops the ball. L3 starts out as a loud and bold revolutionary, but some of her calls for equal rights are treated like comedy bits. In no time, she’s killed and forced into a horrifying fate. She’s integrated directly into the Millennium Falcon, where she becomes yet another piece of hardware, silent and obedient to our heroes. It’s like something out of Black Mirror. Now when I see the Falcon in any Star Wars tale, I can’t help but see it as an eternal prison for a conscious being. Ron Howard, along with screenwriters Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan, made a huge mistake.

It’s a shame. Outside of L3 and Donald Glover’s wonderful take on Lando Calrissian, Solo is a dull romp through nostalgia. It answers questions we’ve never really cared to ask, like how Han Solo really got his name, without contributing much to the broader Star Wars universe. And in many cases, like the thoughtless way it handles L3’s fate, it also changes how we view everything in the franchise, for the worse. (It turns out Han, the rebel we know and love, was given the surname “Solo” by an Imperial paper pusher. Because he was alone. Sigh.)

During L3’s brief screen time, Solo sparkles with the possibility of fresh new ideas. She has no problem calling out humans for their cruel treatment of Droids. At one point, she shouts down the owner of a brutal robot fighting ring, which feels reminiscent of the terrifying “Flesh Fair” in Spielberg’s A.I. Later, she incites a riot among Imperial Droids by convincing all of them — even lowly sweeping bots — that they have a purpose beyond their programming. We also get a surprisingly tender moment with L3, where she hints that she’s in love with Lando (and has seemingly thought quite a bit about how sex would work).

Lucasfilm

Solo shows that Star Wars, and every pop culture franchise for that matter, needs to do more than pay lip service to rebellious ideals. They also have to do justice to those philosophies. The film would have been vastly more meaningful if it treated L3’s calls for equal rights earnestly. And of course, everyone involved should have seen the inherent irony in turning a vocal political rebel into a silent slave. Even giving us a scene where she had some choice in the matter would have helped. Instead, L3 is killed off for cheap dramatic fodder.

Now that Disney has spun up its endless franchise machine for Star Wars, it seems intent on mining our nostalgia for all its worth. But as The Last Jedi showed us, there’s still room for doing something new. Instead of a Boba Fett film, how about something dedicated entirely to Droids? I’m sure R2-D2, who played a key role in every Star Wars film, has plenty of stories to tell.

'We categorically want to avoid confrontation with Russia' – NATO deputy chief https://briefnews.eu/we-categorically-want-to-avoid-confrontation-with-russia-nato-deputy-chief/ https://briefnews.eu/we-categorically-want-to-avoid-confrontation-with-russia-nato-deputy-chief/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 02:26:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-categorically-want-to-avoid-confrontation-with-russia-nato-deputy-chief/ Deputy Secretary General of NATO Rose Gottemoeller says that the Alliance does not wish to face military conflict with Russia, but still blames it for a “troubling pattern of behavior,” from Ukraine to Salisbury.

“We would categorically want to avoid a situation where confrontation with Russia is inevitable. And that’s exactly what our decision-making is governed by,” Gottemoeller told Russian daily Kommersant in an interview published in Russian on Tuesday. However, her message was far from reconciliatory as she went on: “But we can’t leave without reply Russia’s illegal acts: from the annexation of Crimea, to destabilization in Donbass, to election meddling, or the latest events in the UK.”

NATO has increased its presence in the Baltics, Poland and the Black Sea area in recent years, increasing its forward force to 40,000 troops. The Alliance is citing Russia’s alleged “use of force against its neighbors” in the wake of the 2014 Crimea referendum that resulted in the region’s split from Ukraine and reunification with Russia. It is also accusing Moscow of backing the rebellious regions of Lugansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.

Gottemoeller, a US diplomat who has been deputy NATO chief since 2016, says the Alliance response has been “well-calibrated, proportionate and defensive in its nature,” but refused to rule out further bolstering of NATO troop numbers in Eastern Europe or deny that Russia remains the group’s primary adversary.

Despite Moscow’s protestations, Gottemoeller says that NATO “has no reason to doubt” the UK’s suggestion that Russia is behind last month’s poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury. Despite inconclusive chemical test results, the official said that the UK had “other sources of information” to justify accusing Moscow, and added that NATO must “show solidarity and a single position,” while also accusing the Russian media of “running a propaganda campaign.”

Amid a growing risk of direct confrontation between Russian and NATO forces in Syria, Gottemoeller expressed hope that scheduled talks involving Russia’s Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and Europe’s Supreme Allied Commander Curtis Scaparrotti would aid “transparency, predictability, and help prevent incidents.”

Dermot O’Leary was on stage with Bruce Forsyth’s widow Wilnelia to present an award when an unknown man rushed on.

The incident took place during the VT which listed the nominations for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment award, which Ant and Dec went on to win.

In snaps taken at the ceremony held at the O2 Arena, Dermot can be seen intercepting the mystery man as Wilnelia watched on.

He was pictured stopping the man from reaching the microphone as security swiftly descended onto the stage.

The man, who appeared to be a protester, held onto a piece of paper and wore a T-Shirt, which read: “Oppression of ideas is not freedom like UK media thinks.”

As the incident happened during a VT, it was not broadcast on television.

Ahead of Ant and Dec being awarded the gong, Wilnelia spoke about her late husband.

“I’m so proud and honoured that this special award is named after my darling Brucie,” she declared.

Holly took the opportunity to joke with the presenter, declaring he was the new sexual health doctor on This Morning.

“Bradley Walsh is our new doctor,” she shouted.

“He’s taking over sexual health so if anyone has an issue, come and speak to Doctor Brad.”

The National Television Awards will be available to watch on the ITV Hub.

  • The New York Giants suspended second-year cornerback Eli Apple for conduct detrimental to the team after he reportedly got into a confrontation with coaches.
  • The confrontation came after safety Landon Collins called Apple a “cancer” during a radio interview.
  • One report said Apple, who has struggled this year, will not be on the Giants next season.

The New York Giants suspended second-year cornerback Eli Apple for “conduct detrimental” to the team.

The suspension comes after ugly scenes unfolded between Apple, Giants safety Landon Collins, coaches, and the media.

It began on Tuesday when Collins called Apple a “cancer” while on ESPN radio, saying the Giants defense was fine except for him.

“There’s only just one corner that … needs to grow, and we all know who that is,” Collin said, adding, “But that first pick … he’s a cancer.”

The comment obviously sparked controversy on the team, and Collins and Apple reportedly both met with interim coach Steve Spagnuolo and then with each other. Collins apologized for the comment.

It didn’t, however, end the controversy for Apple. On Wednesday, Apple reportedly got into a confrontation with cornerbacks coach Tim Walton and was restrained by teammates.

Apple also declined to talk to media on Wednesday, passing through the locker room and saying, “I gotta take a s—,” prompting criticism from some in the NFL world.

Overall, the situation doesn’t look good for Apple. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Apple is not well-liked in the Giants locker room and has been criticized as being immature. He struggled with injuries and off-field incidents this season, turning in a poor performance on the field after a decent rookie season in 2016.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Apple is likely done with the Giants. The Giants can void the remaining money on his deal this offseason, according to ESPN.

Russia does not seek confrontation with anyone, keeping the door open for dialogue with both East and West, but will never sacrifice its vital interests and security of its people, President Vladimir Putin said.

“Our strength is aimed at protecting against outside threats [and] terrorism,” President Putin told members of the United Russia party on Saturday. “We are not seeking and will not be seeking confrontation with anyone, and will continue [pursuing] a transparent and honest foreign policy.”

Moscow is open to fair dialogue “with all the countries, be it in the West or East,” Putin said. “But we will never sacrifice the security of our citizens and national interests of our people.”

The president’s words follow his announcement earlier in November that he will seek a fourth term in office. Putin also outlined his vision for Russia’s future, particularly addressing the economy, human rights, and pressing social issues.

Putin said that “a strong, responsible, and free civil society” is a key factor of change, and is immune to attempts to destabilize Russia and plunge it into chaos or “make it veer off its way.”

Reducing poverty and creating jobs will also be priorities for the years to come, he said, adding that the high number of those living in poverty or with earnings below the minimum income standard is “pure humiliation” for the people.

Russia has managed to overcome recession and secure steady economic growth, which makes it possible to “target poverty exactly like we targeted inflation.” However, Putin cautioned against populist movements and unrealistic promises.

Emmerdale spoilers: Fans spot disastrous gaffe during Jai Sharma confrontation 'Faux pas' https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-fans-spot-disastrous-gaffe-during-jai-sharma-confrontation-faux-pas/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-fans-spot-disastrous-gaffe-during-jai-sharma-confrontation-faux-pas/#respond Mon, 09 Oct 2017 23:15:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-fans-spot-disastrous-gaffe-during-jai-sharma-confrontation-faux-pas/

The ITV soap took the drama down a notch following the horrifying events of last week, but that didn’t stop viewers from being shocked at an awkward technical gaffe.

During a scene between Jai (played by Chris Bisson) and Rishi (Bhasker Patel), some eagle-eyed viewers spotted the tell-tale appearance of a badly-placed boom microphone.

The mistake occurred just as Jai and Rishi confronted Lydia Hart (Karen Blick) over the disappearance of Jai’s cleaner Una.

Burdened by the truth that she’d fabricated a friend so she would get paid an extra wage for her job at the sweet factory, Lydia attempted to hide from the men.

Despite the drama however, many viewers were only interested in the error they’d just witnessed.

One fan posted: “#Emmerdale isn’t real, just saw a microphone above Jai’s head #fake.”

“Looooool mic above Jai’s head,” another person said.

A third then wrote bluntly: “Faux pas #Emmerdale.”

Meanwhile, Moira Dingle (Natalie J. Robb) finally revealed the truth about her baby’s paternity.

Following a heartbreaking week for the Barton family that saw matriarch Emma (Gillian Kearney) and her son Finn (Joe Gill) killed, Pete’s (Anthony Quinlan) pain was increased when Moira came clean that her newborn child wasn’t actually his.

Will Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Moira get another chance at happiness now they have a baby together, or will the pair forever be at odds?

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.
