According to his financial disclosure form, Smith provided legal services to a host of companies, including Uber, Amazon, JP Morgan, and the Dallas Cowboys. Several of these companies are currently under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), including Equifax, the credit company that exposed the personal information of 145 million Americans in a data breach last year.
Among the 53 other companies listed on Smith’s disclosure are “predatory” payday lenders Elevate Credit and MoneyKey, the latter of which was ordered to pay back more than $ 4 million to customers after it violated consumer finance laws in Virginia in 2015.
The long list of potential conflicts, which could see Smith forced to recuse himself from important cases, led liberal consumer rights watchdog Public Citizen to file a Freedom of Information Act request. The group wanted to know where Smith’s conflicts lay, and what the FTC was going to do to prevent him from backing his former clients instead of the ordinary consumer.
The response revealed nothing. The FTC returned almost 500 pages, nearly all of which were blank or heavily redacted.
“This raises additional questions about whether Smith is truly working to protect consumers or simply carrying water for his corporate friends,” said Public Citizen’s Remington A. Gregg. “The public deserves more than hollow promises of transparency.”
A raft of emails contained within the FOIA request reveal only Smith’s email headers and footers, and those of several other FTC bureaucrats. Almost everything else is blocked out and unreadable. A copy of an executive order on ethics from President Trump, and a copy of a letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) warning the agency against Smith’s appointment were also included in the stash.
“Mr. Smith is well known in Washington for his representation of Equifax, Facebook, Uber, and other companies that have been accused of some of the worst abuses of consumers,” read the letter from Warren to FTC Chairman Joseph Simmons. Smith’s record, Warren wrote, “leaves him unfit and unable to function as the FTC’s top consumer advocate.”
The FTC was well within its rights to redact the documents, no matter how suspect the move appeared. FOIA exemptions allow the agency to withhold information that would not be available to anyone save for in a court case. Exemptions also allow the agency to redact anything they would consider trade secrets or confidential financial information.
That a former corporate lawyer would be chosen to lead the US’ top consumer protection organization might sound bizarre, but Smith’s appointment is par for the course in Washington. Andrew Wheeler, the current acting Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is a former coal industry lobbyist who fought the Obama administration’s climate regulations on power plants, while his predecessor, Scott Pruitt, was an advocate against environmental regulations before heading the agency.

Speaking from the White House a day after meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Trump said that US-Russia relations have never been in a worse place, but that relations had “gotten substantially better” and could improve more in the future.
Trump also said he accepts the US intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election, but said that Russia’s actions had no impact on the election outcome.
He also said that he discussed with Putin the prospect of reducing nuclear weapons worldwide.

Speaking to Bild’s Sunday edition, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Berlin is ready to revive dialogues with Moscow, despite supporting the wave of diplomatic expulsions over the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal, which Britain blames on Russia. He said much trust was lost between Russian and its Western counterparts, but the possibility to mend ties is still there.
“We need Russia as a partner to settle regional conflicts, for disarmament and as an important pillar of multilateralism,” the top German diplomat said, adding, “we are therefore open for dialogue and are trying to rebuild trust bit by bit if Russia is ready.”
The latest diplomatic crisis was sparked by the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury, UK, on March 4. London claims the two were poisoned by a Soviet-era nerve agent known as A-234 (also referred to as ‘Novichok’). Moscow has repeatedly demanded that the UK share details of the investigation into the incident but has not received anything from the British side, which has also been highly secretive about the Skripals’ condition and the treatment they received. Instead, the UK government promoted its version of the events, urging its Western allies to expel Russian diplomats as a sign of “solidarity” with London.
While Berlin partly supported the move and sent four Russian diplomats home, Germany has, at the same time, issued a permit for the offshore section of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 project in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Baltic Sea.
On Tuesday, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH) green-lighted the approximately 30-kilometers-long route section “in accordance with the Federal Mining Act,” the company in charge of the project, Nord Stream 2 AG, said on its website.
The pipeline is pending authorization from regulators in Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, and the permits are due to be obtained in the coming month, the operator said.

US President Donald Trump has again used Twitter to take aim at special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russia.
Trump tweeted Monday morning that the Mueller probe is a “total WITCH HUNT with massive conflicts of interest!”
A total WITCH HUNT with massive conflicts of interest!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) 19 марта 2018 г.
The tweet sparked another flurry of speculation that Trump is planning to fire Mueller, despite assurances from his legal team at the weekend that the president is “not considering or discussing” firing the special counsel.
The tweet came about an hour after another in which Trump praised Fox News host Sean Hannity for his “great” performance on the channel’s morning show Fox & Friends.
Hannity used his appearance on the show to claim there “never was any Trump-Russia collusion” and to lambaste the “fake news media” that Trump himself routinely criticizes. Hannity also said that Hillary Clinton and some FBI and Justice Department officials should be investigated and prosecuted for the “many crimes” they have committed.

Left-wing, pro-Clinton media watchdog Media Matters said Trump’s comments on Hannity’s appearance shed light on the “feedback loop” between the Trump administration and Fox News.
The Monday morning tweets follow a weekend of similar tweets from Trump criticizing Mueller and the ongoing Russia investigation. On Sunday, Trump claimed the investigation was biased, tweeting that the makeup of Mueller’s team was “13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans.”
A day before, Trump tweeted that the investigation “should never have been started” because “there was no collusion and there was no crime”. The collusion narrative was based on “fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC.”
Trump was referring to the now infamous ‘Steele dossier,’ which forms the basis for many of the allegations against him and was partly funded by the Clinton campaign through the Fusion GPS investigative firm.
Since the investigation begun, The White House has repeatedly had to quash rumors that Trump is planning to fire Mueller. The president’s latest tweets, however, will likely do nothing to dampen that speculation.

President Donald Trump said in an interview that he hopes special counsel Robert Mueller is “treating everything fairly” as he investigates Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, which involves looking into whether any members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to sway the race in his favor.
“Well, I hope he’s treating everything fairly,” Trump told “Full Measure” host Sharyl Attkisson in an interview that will air on Sunday. “And if he is, I’m going to be very happy, because when you talk about innocent, I am truly not involved in any collusion with Russia.
“Believe me, that’s the last thing I can think of to be involved in,” Trump added.
Trump’s defense team has been cooperating with Mueller’s investigation, largely at the urging of Ty Cobb, the white-collar defense attorney leading the president’s legal team, who has argued that cooperating with the special counsel will ensure that the investigation concludes quickly and smoothly, and without the president getting caught in the crosshairs.
But Jay Sekulow, another attorney on Trump’s defense team, told Politico on Thursday he will lodge a complaint against Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — who appointed Mueller special counsel in May — if Mueller looks too closely at Trump’s prior business dealings.
Trump also addressed issues surrounding Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman who was indicted on Monday along with his longtime associate, Rick Gates, as part of Mueller’s investigation.

“Paul was not there very long,” Trump said of Manafort’s tenure on the campaign.
Manafort joined the operation in March 2016 and departed in August, three days after The New York Times reported that Ukraine’s pro-Russian Party of Regions had earmarked $ 12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments for Manafort for his work consulting for the party between 2007 and 2012.
Explaining why Manafort left the campaign, Trump said, “Well, I think we found out something about he may be involved with all — with certain nations, and I don’t even know exactly what it was in particular.”
He continued: “But there was a point at which we just felt Paul would be better off, because we don’t want to have many potential conflicts.”
Because of his extensive ties to Russia, Manafort has been a subject of red-hot focus from Mueller’s team.
The former campaign chairman was indicted Monday on 12 counts, including conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money; unregistered agent of a foreign principal; false and misleading Foreign Agents Registration Act statements; false statements; and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.
When Trump first hired Manafort in last March, Manafort was known for having worked as a top consultant to former Ukrainian president and pro-Russian strongman Viktor Yanukovych, and is widely credited with helping him win the election in 2010. Yanukovych is a prominent figure in the Party of Regions.
In July, The New York Times reported on financial records Manafort filed in Cyprus that showed he was $ 17 million in debt to pro-Russian interests when he joined the campaign.
Manafort is also associated with Oleg Deripaska, a wealthy Russian oligarch with known ties to the Kremlin. Deripaska’s representatives claimed, in legal complaints filed in the Cayman Islands in 2014, that Manafort had disappeared after Deripaska gave him $ 19 million to invest in a failed Ukrainian TV venture.
Earlier this month, The Atlantic published several emails that appeared to show Manafort using his elevated role in the Trump campaign to resolve the dispute with Deripaska, by offering him “private briefings” on the campaign.
Manafort was also one of three top Trump campaign members, in addition to Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr., who attended a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer offering damaging information on then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Trump said during his interview with Attkisson that no one has informed him that Mueller plans to question him.
“As far as I’m concerned, I haven’t been told that we’re under investigation,” Trump said. “I’m not under investigation.”
Multiple revelations over the last few months appear to contradict the president’s claim. Mueller is said to be building an obstruction-of-justice case against Trump related to his decision to fire James Comey as FBI director in May. At the time, Comey was spearheading the bureau’s Russia investigation. Rosenstein appointed Mueller special counsel shortly after Trump fired Comey.
Mueller is also reportedly investigating Trump for his involvement in crafting a misleading statement that his son, Donald Trump Jr., released following revelations that he met with the Russian lawyer offering dirt on Clinton last June.

Responding to a request for information from Germany’s Left Party (Die Linke), the defense ministry said around 410,000 troops have deployed overseas in 52 international missions since 1991, according to DPA news agency, which obtained the papers.
The missions cost €21 billion in taxpayer money altogether – more than previously thought, the Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ) reports.
Along with the enormous price tag, the incalculable human cost includes 108 troops losing their lives, with 37 of them killed in action, according to Spiegel and FAZ.
“The [German military’s] foreign missions not only cost a fortune – many soldiers have paid for it with their lives. This is particularly painful because normally no armed conflict [is] resolved through military deployment,” Sabine Zimmermann, deputy chairman of the Left Party faction, stated.
The Bundeswehr, founded in 1955 by the then-West German government, has to return to its roots and become a “defense force” again, withdrawing from overseas missions the MP argued, adding, “Weapons exports must be prohibited.”
The news comes as a number of key politicians call for a major overhaul of German military policy. Martin Schulz, whose Social Democratic party is gearing up to challenge Angela Merkel in the upcoming 2017 general election, blasted the chancellor for her plan to increase military spending – a demand Donald Trump has repeatedly made to Washington’s NATO allies.
Schulz suggested on Wednesday that the money allocated for defense spending to meet the two percent of GDP be invested in education and welfare.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has also expressed unease over the massive armament programs, writing in an op-ed last week that Berlin must not “kneel” before Washington’s pressure on military spending. He insisted that Germany free itself of “the devilish logic saying that security is to be reached through armament.”
Germany currently spends around €37 billion (US$ 43.6 billion) on defense, or 1.2 percent of GDP. Meeting the two-percent target means the country’s defense expenditures could double. Schulz and Thomas Oppermann – another SPD top official – said in an opinion piece that the goal is not only unrealistic, but would not sit well with people, given Germany’s history.
The two maintained that if defense spending were doubled, Germany would become Europe’s largest military power, which they say “nobody would want – just because of our past. It makes no sense for the future either.”
Defense budget aside, it emerged that multiple reliability issues have badly damaged German military’s capabilities. In January, the Augsburger Allegmaine newspaper reported that almost half of the 225 battle tanks in the German Army were in urgent need of modernization, only 38 of Germany’s 89 Tornado jets were combat ready, and only 25 of 57 transport airplanes were operational, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.
Die Welt reported that the armored vehicles which the Bundeswehr deployed to Mali as part of a UN mission were taken out of operation due to “dust” and “rocky roads.” The German Air Force’s Tiger attack helicopters stationed in Mali were also grounded for some time due to extreme heat exceeding 43C (109F), while the average daytime temperature there exceeds 44-45C.
In late July, the air force lost its first Tiger deployed to Mali. The aircraft began losing parts – including main rotor blades – ten seconds before crashing into the desert, according to Reuters, citing a military investigation.
