The curling foursome of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby was kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic for "unacceptable conduct" that included being "extremely drunk." They were kicked out of the event by organizers on Saturday after breaking brooms, damaging equipment in the locker room and swearing.
Now the head of operations for the WCT says they are going through an internal review to look at what happened in Red Deer. He says they don't currently have any policies around this sort of incident, something they are now looking at.
"This is very uncommon. Very rarely do we deal with incidents like this," Gerry Geurts said. "This went into a direction that was beyond having a few drinks after a game."

Geurts says he was first alerted to the unfolding situation in Red Deer when he noticed the team had forfeited a game.
"That was kind of surprising", he said.
Geurts says he was soon inundated with emails from concerned fans and coaches about the behaviour of the curlers.
"We posted a statement about it immediately on our WCT social media channels."
The team of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby has been ejected from the Red Deer Curling Classic due to unsportsmanlike behaviour, forfeiting their remaining game. #curling #wcthttps://t.co/DmrezFmzwq

Geurts says the WCT is now awaiting an official report of what happened to be filed by the organizing committee of the Red Deer Curling Classic.
Wade Thurber says he's been bombarded by media phone calls from across Canada and internationally asking what happened during the event.
Thurber is the club's facility manager and says the Red Deer Curling Classic has existed for 20 years. This year's event featured 56 teams — 28 men's and 28 women's teams from around the world.
Right now, Thurber says the organizing committee is just trying to get through the event, which wraps up on Monday.
"I had no idea when I started this event I'd be dealing with this," Thurber said.
The committee will spend the next couple of weeks looking over comments and feedback from fans, curlers and coaches about what took place before filing an official report to the WCT, Thurber says.

"We will meet after the fact and discuss what action we're going to take here in Red Deer with these four curlers," Thurber said.
The "unacceptable behaviour" — as Thurber describes it — took place Saturday. The team lost 10-5 against a team skipped by Kody Hartung. Jamie Koe was not on the ice, so the team was playing with three curlers. The teams shook hands after seven ends.
"They went out to curl and they were extremely drunk and breaking brooms and swearing and just unacceptable behaviour that nobody wants to watch or hear or listen to and it was just 'enough was enough,'" Thurber said.
There was also a small hole in the dry wall in one of the locker rooms.
Thurber says the players have been apologetic — including Fry, who has offered to pay for the damages.
Fry, who is normally a third on Team Brad Jacobs, was serving as a spare with Koe's team at the event. He lives in Calgary, while the rest of the team curls out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
He says a bad lapse in judgment affected the experience for others.
"I would like to sincerely apologize to the fans, participants and organizers of the Red Deer Curling Classic," Fry said.
Skip Brad Jacobs says he's "very disappointed" with what's unfolded and that the team has been in contact with Fry.
"We in no way support that type of behaviour, whether it's displayed on or off the ice. It's absolutely unacceptable. We've shared that with Ryan [Fry]. Really at this point, we're just taking the necessary steps to handle it internally and that's really where we're at." Jacobs said.
Fry was part of the 2014 Olympic gold-medal winning curling team for Canada. He's played in 10 Briers, winning the national title and silver at the world championship in 2013.
"I came to the event to play and enjoy the sport. My actions were truly disrespectful and embarrassing — the committee was right to disqualify us from play."
"I allowed myself to lose control and I offended people with my actions. I wish nothing more than to apologize to everyone individually," Fry said.
I want to express how sorry I am to everyone affected by my actions on Saturday. I never meant to offend anyone but that’s the result of a poor decision – I have to live with the consequences and will be taking every step needed to guarantee this never happens again. #notgivingup pic.twitter.com/3gnjkDam1W

Fry has since returned to the Red Deer Curling Club to meet with the members there to apologize. He also issued apologies to everyone affected.
On Monday, Jamie Koe and Chris Schille took to Twitter to also post apology statements.

"Due to a lapse in judgment on Saturday, we contributed to an unpleasant experience for others," Koe said. "Although I removed myself from the last game before it started, the actions from the team led to our disqualification."
Schille says they took their fun a little too far.

"In the time since I have talked with other staff and board members to apologize, and to reiterate that the decision they made was the right one given the position they were put in," Schille posted on Twitter.
CNN’s White House correspondent Jim Acosta will see his “hard pass” restored, but all journalists seeking access to the presidential press room will now have to abide by written rules of conduct due to his misbehavior.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders and deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine sent a letter to Acosta on Monday, notifying him that his hard pass was restored, but that it might be suspended or revoked again if he fails to abide by the new rules that apply to all White House correspondents going forward.
Under the rules laid out in the letter, each journalist gets “a single question” before having to yield the floor, with follow-ups solely at the discretion of White House officials. Failure to obey the rules may result in suspension or revocation of the “hard pass,” the document allowing major networks regular access to the White House.
“Should you refuse to follow these rules in the future, we will take action in accordance with the rules,” wrote Sanders and Shine.
Acosta’s pass was yanked following an incident at President Donald Trump’s November 7 press conference, where the CNN correspondent argued with Trump instead of asking questions (not for the first time) and physically prevented a White House intern from taking the microphone away from him.

CNN responded by suing the White House, claiming that Acosta’s due process and free speech rights were being infringed. Last week, a federal judge ordered the pass temporarily restored on due process grounds. In response to the letter, CNN dropped the lawsuit.
Mainstream media outlets that had joined CNN in suing Trump celebrated Monday’s letter, framing it as the White House “backing down” in face of the legal challenge while largely ignoring the implications of the new rules: that the media critical of Trump might have won a battle, but lost the war.
“We have created these rules with a degree of regret,” Sanders and Shine wrote. “But, given the position taken by CNN, we now feel obligated to replace previously shared practices with explicit rules.”
This means that Acosta, or any other reporter covering the White House, can get their pass suspended or revoked over specific conduct going forward, without having a leg to stand on in terms of due process. That leaves the First Amendment grounds, effectively arguing that access to the White House is a civil right under the US Constitution, for which there is no precedent under US law.

Twitter’s crusade against “hate speech” has vanquished yet another meany face. A prominent Canadian feminist says that the company flagged a tweet she wrote which meekly suggested that men aren’t women. Isn’t Twitter fun?
Meghan Murphy, editor of Canada’s leading feminist news portal, Feminist Current, was recently informed by Twitter that two of her tweets had violated the platform’s rules against “hateful conduct.”
One of the offending tweets stated that “men aren’t women,” while the other asked: “How are transwomen not men?”
This is fucking bullshit @twitter. I'm not allowed to say that men aren't women or ask questions about the notion of transgenderism at all anymore? That a multi billion dollar company is censoring BASIC FACTS and silencing people who ask questions about this dogma is INSANE pic.twitter.com/dul6iOdbaz

“This is f*cking bullshit @twitter. I’m not allowed to say that men aren’t women or ask questions about the notion of transgenderism at all anymore?” Murphy tweeted. “That a multi billion dollar company is censoring BASIC FACTS and silencing people who ask questions about this dogma is INSANE.”
What ARE we allowed to say here??? How tf is simply saying 'men aren't women' hateful??? I am losing my goddamned mind over this. Enjoy your brave new world, sjws. Here's your fucking social justice.
— Meghan Murphy (@MeghanEMurphy) November 15, 2018
The feminist writer and commentator expressed disbelief over her “hateful” infraction in a series of follow-up tweets.
Murphy said that “trans activists” had been targeting her account for several months, and that it was clear that someone had been combing through her tweets and reporting them for “hateful conduct.”
Whether she was censured by a human or an algorithm, many on Twitter – even those who said they didn’t agree with Murphy’s views – expressed outrage that “men aren’t woman” could be labelled as hateful.
“I don’t agree with everything you say, but I absolutely support your unalienable right to do so. Shutting down dissenting speech is quite the opposite to what those people claim they are fighting for,” another Twitter user wrote.

This is one of the biggest issues with censoring "hate speech". This *IS* a political debate right now, whether you agree or disagree. To simply state "those who don't support my position aren't arguing, they're spouting hate speech" to shut conversation down is unethical. https://t.co/qJnUpOW9MM

Twitter announced last year that it would begin a comprehensive crackdown on abusive behavior. But in the months since, the company has been dogged by accusations that it uses its ban hammer to purge conservative or politically-incorrect views from its platform.
The recent de-platforming of conspiracy guru Alex Jones has been followed by a number of baffling bans targeting alternative media.
The site appears to have developed rather thin skin, deleting up to 1,500 accounts that used the popular ‘NPC meme’ to satirize left-wing activists. Twitter claimed that the meme-wielding jokers were Russian bots.
Critics of the social media site have repeatedly noted that while Twitter will take swift action against right-wing voices who make threatening or hateful comments, the same standards are not applied to those on the left.
Silicon Valley has become increasingly paranoid about potentially offending its users – or allowing alternative viewpoints on its platforms. Google, for example, recently introduced “inclusive” emojis. Its salad emoji, which included eggs, was apparently a war crime against vegans.

“Coalition aircraft targeted legitimate military positions at al-Dailami Air Base, northeast of the capital, Sanaa,” the coalition leadership said in a statement, referring to the outskirts of Yemen’s civilian international airport which remains one of the few lifelines for the war-torn country.
The coalition claimed that it targeted the launch sites of ballistic missiles and drones, noting that overall more than 12 raids were carried out across Yemen in the early hours on Friday.
Insisting that no civilian infrastructure was targeted, Saudi-led forces said that Sanaa airport is still operating as usual.
So far there have been no official reports of casualties from the raids, which come in the midst of a renewed UN-led peace effort, which is this time backed by the United States. Local reports indicate that the raids are continuing.

Kelly Kahl, president of CBS entertainment, gave an executive session before the Television Critics Association knowing full well that a majority of questions would center around the sexual misconduct allegations brought against Les Moonves, the Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer of CBS Corporation. The New Yorker published Ronan Farrow’s investigation last week where six women came forward with stories about Moonves involving physical assault, sexual harassment and blacklisting the women when they refused his advances.
While CBS wanted to discuss the new fall shows presented to the TCA this afternoon, Kahl still said what he could about the investigation, the network’s response to continued workplace allegations, those who have and have not come out in support of CBS and more.
CBS already started an investigation into the allegations against Moonves. One week into said investigation, there are no results yet.
“All allegations need to be and are being taken seriously,” Kahl said. “Two outside law firms have been retained to investigate. The scope of what I can talk about today is limited. There’s simply nothing else I can say about Leslie and the investigation. It’s a pretty safe bet not much I can say up here will satisfy you.”
That didn’t stop reporters from attempting variations of follow-up questions. CBS has already dealt with allegations against Morgan Freeman, Jeremy Piven, NCIS: New Orleans executive producer Brad Kern, not to mention fired Star Trek Discovery showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg. With that number of allegations coming out of the network, can we trust CBS to get results?
“I believe we take workplace safety very seriously,” Kern said. “I think if you look up and down the halls at CBS you’ll find a very safe environment. We have over 40 shows in production. The vast majority are excellent sets where everyone is very happy and very safe. Any time any allegation comes up on any of our shows, it’s investigated immediately. There’s no wiggle room there. Any complaint, we have a procedure we follow. It goes to HR and sometimes outside council if necessary. While maybe we are not perfect, we take everything seriously.”

Since the New Yorker published the story, various CBS executives and personalities have spoken about it. For one, Moonves’ wife, who is also CBS’ Big Brother host and The Talk co-host, Julie Chen said she stood by him. Kahl acknowledged some of the other voices we’ve heard, and his own.
“[CBS Films President] Terry Press wrote eloquently about the situation,” Kahl said. “I think Stephen Colbert spoke thoughtfully and powerfully on his show this past week. They’ve all struggled to express their feelings. I struggle as well. Leslie’s been an excellent boss and a mentor for a long time. He put me in this job. At the same time, we must respect the voices that come forward.”
Within CBS, according to Kahl, there have been many people expressing support privately as well.
“Every exec that came to see me, every female exec who came to see me, were dismayed by what they read,” Kahl said. “That’s not their experience. All came to me and said they feel CBS entertainment is a nurturing, welcoming environment. Many of their careers have advanced at CBS. Almost all our department heads are women. They feel supported. I try to help them do their jobs to the best of my ability.”
Whoever those executives are, they’re not the show runners or talent on CBS shows. Asked specifically which showrunners or talent spoke to Kahl, he said none have.
“I have not had any direct discussions with any of them about the matter,” Kahl said. “Again, I believe our sets and our shows are great places to work, great environments. If they have concerns, I hope they will come forward and tell us. I think you’re going to see a bunch of people today who are excited to be at CBS.”
With most of the sexual assault, harassment and misconduct cases we have seen in the last year, they are often followed by several comments from people on both sides of the issue. What we very rarely see is a genuine apology, someone saying, “I did this and I’m sorry I did that.”
Moonves released a statement expressing regret over mistakes, but no apology to the women he attacked. /Film asked Kahl if Moonves might apologize to the women in the New Yorker story, either publicly or privately, but Kahl could not answer.
“I can’t speak to that,” Kahl said. “There’s an investigation underway. There’s nothing I can add to that.”
His face sure did sink when he heard the word “apologize” though.

Kahl wanted to credit CBS’s human resources department for taking allegations seriously. Many questions to him involved specifics about what happens when someone comes forward.
“I believe we take workplace safety very seriously,” Kahl said.
This is a problematic defense. “Most of our 40 shows are just fine” doesn’t cut it. If even one of the shows has a producer committing harassment, having 39 good ones isn’t a free pass. Kahl acknowledged that every case is unique.
“I don’t believe there is a one size fits all investigation,” Kahl said. “I know any time and there are multiple ways by the way to get in touch with HR including several anonymous ways, HR must investigate. If someone comes to me, I have to call HR. How they investigate I think depends on the case. I can’t speak to what their protocol is but everything is investigated. The hopeful result is to find the truth. I believe both in our HR department and any outside council we’ve ever retained to get to the truth.”
Sometimes there are other forces in the mix. CBS produces shows with outside studios like Warner Brothers, so if a situation arises on those shows, they work together.
“Generally the lead studio would take responsibility for any issues including things like HR, staffing, things like that,” Kahl said. “There is certainly consultation but the studio takes the lead on practically all creative issues. I think the studio that produces the show should be responsible for what goes on on that show. We have great collaboration with both our internal studios and outside. We have great relationships with our studio partners.”
Again, the amount of investigations cited above does suggest that maybe CBS HR is not nipping things in the bud. Kahl believes they are.
“Our HR department does a great job,” Kahl said. “I don’t think anyone would want them looking into you if they choose to investigate. They do a very thorough job. Look, in cases where there’s a question, we’ve retained outside firms. The bottom line is to get to the truth. My dealings with the human resources department have always been straightforward and honest”
We’ll have more on the Les Moonves investigation as they develop.

A statement announcing the early pardon, released by Saudi Arabia’s state news agency SPA, said the pardon extends to “all military men across the armed forces” taking part in Operation Restoring Hope, citing the official codename of the Riyadh-led invasion of Yemen.
The royal decree was issued following “reports submitted” by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s sitting defense minister.
It exonerates troops involved in hostilities from “their respective military and disciplinary penalties, in regard of some rules and disciplines.” The statement issued by the SPA wasn’t specific as to any particular crimes, but said the move was to show appreciation for the “heroics and sacrifices” of the soldiers.
The coalition led by the Saudi Arabia has been waging a military campaign against the Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in an attempt to put the ousted Yemeni president back in power. Riyadh had formed an alliance of Arab states, and their offensive initially drove the Houthis out of swathes of land in the south, but then stalled. Houthis continue to hit the Arab troops, launching surprise attacks and employing guerilla tactics.
Since the start of the Saudi-led campaign, the coalition has been repeatedly accused of killing dozens of civilians in its airstrikes but it rarely admitted responsibility for such incidents. Saudi-led forces have been repeatedly targeting civilian targets, with rights groups saying their rules of engagement amounted to war crimes. Last year, a Human Rights Watch official, Ahmed Benchemsi, told RT that 61 documented airstrikes, all conducted by the coalition, “may amount indeed to war crimes, that have killed nearly 900 civilians and have hit civilian areas, including markets, schools, hospitals and private homes.”
Later last year, a massive report presented to the UN Security Council, concluded that in eight out of ten inquiries into Saudi bombings “the panel found no evidence that the airstrikes had targeted legitimate military objectives.” In all ten investigations, the panel said “it is almost certain that the coalition did not meet international humanitarian law requirements of proportionality and precautions in attack.”
The persisting Yemen war, which entered its third year in 2018, has brought more than eight million people in the region’s poorest country to the brink of starvation. The worst humanitarian crisis in the world has seen almost two-thirds of the population struggle to provide food and basic amenities to their families.
The campaign and Saudi-imposed blockade of the impoverished nation have contributed to a humanitarian crisis in Yemen, including a major outbreak of cholera and continued malnutrition of the population, the human rights organizations say. Still, major Western powers, inducing the US and the UK, have been contributing to the Saudi war effort by selling Riyadh weapons and providing the coalition air missions with refueling and targeting intelligence.

Facebook has come under fire lately for accusations of racial and political bias, and it’s determined to address both of those claims head-on. The social media giant has committed to independent investigations that will scrutinize both its civil rights record and its alleged anti-conservative political bias. Civil liberties leader Laura Murphy will lead a civil rights audit with input from groups like the Leadership Conference. Meanwhile, former Republican Senator Jon Kyl will run a conservative bias advisory partnership that will also see Facebook executives meeting with the right-wing think tank Heritage Foundation.
It’s no secret why Facebook has agreed to the investigations: it’s facing mounting pressure in both cases. The company is facing a lawsuit over discriminatory housing ads, and Republicans have routinely accused Facebook of intentionally downplaying conservative content. Whether or not Facebook actually needs to change its practices, the scrutiny might head off further legal and political action in addition to quieting some of its critics.
There are still some unanswered questions: how extensive will these inspections be? And if there is evidence of bias, how will Facebook address it beyond existing measures like publishing its community standards? There’s a good chance this won’t satisfy everyone, for that matter. All the same, this shows that Facebook is at least taking allegations seriously.

The Chinese Air Force (PLAAF) has moved its H-6K bombers and Su-30 and Su-35 fighters to a number of potential war theaters in the region, sending some planes to the South China Sea and others to the area of Miyako Strait, a strategic entryway into the Western Pacific that lies close to Japan.
“Air Force exercises are rehearsals for future wars and are the most direct preparation for combat,” Chinese Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke announced Sunday, according to Reuters.
While the statement did not mention when the exercises took place, it did stress that the air power remains “an important force for managing and controlling crises, containing war and winning battles.”
The news of the drills comes just a day after the USS Mustin came within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago, in the South China Sea. Despite Washington having no claims or aspirations in the resource-rich South China Sea, the US Navy conducts frequent ‘Freedom of Navigation’ operations in the area. China has repeatedly condemned such incursions as a threat to its territorial interests.

The closure of maternity wards in rural communities across Canada has forced some women to travel hundreds of kilometres and pay thousands of dollars to deliver their babies.
In the run-up to the Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Seoul was able to convince Washington to delay the start of their annual winter/springtime joint military exercises until after the games. The temporary halt to the annual Foal Eagle/Key Resolve US-South Korea joint military exercises allowed North and South Korea to develop a dialogue that the South hopes will ease the mounting tension in the region.
On Tuesday, a day after Pyongyang warned against the resumption of the military drills, South Korea’s defense ministry announced that the allies will still hold the Key Resolve and Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises. Holding the drills this year, the S. Korean military said it will enhance the so-called 4D Operational Concept amid allies which aims “to detect, disrupt, destroy and defend against North Korean missile threats,” the ministry said in a report to the National Assembly, Yonhap reports.
No concrete schedule for the drills has yet been announced for 2018, and the report did not mention the fate of the Foal Eagle drills. A Key Resolve computer-simulated command post exercise was held March 8-23 last year. The 2017 Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise involving some 17,500 US service members took place August 21-31.
The North has long urged the allies to stop their joint military training, and on Monday reiterated its objection to war games on its borders. “Resuming the war exercises is a wild act of ruthlessly trampling even a small sprout of peace that has been seen on the Korean peninsula,” North Korean KCNA said in an official commentary.
N. Korea particularly accused Donald Trump’s administration of seeking “war” in the region, blaming the US for using the “most powerful weapon in the world” to coerce Pyongyang. “The Trump group has to ponder over the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its reckless saber-rattling, and make a responsible choice,” KCNA said.
“We are ready for dialogue and war.”
The latest statement comes amid the war of words and muscle flexing in the region between Pyongyang and Washington. As the US again threatens to pursue a military option to neutralize North Korea, Russia and China have been calling for calm. Moscow and China have consistently urged for a diplomatic solution to the crisis based on the ‘double freeze’ initiative. The simple Sino-Russian proposal, firmly rejected by Washington, seeks a simultaneous suspension of both nuclear tests by Pyongyang and the large-scale military exercises by Washington and Seoul.
