SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Four North Korean soldiers fired about 40 rounds at a comrade fleeing into South Korea and hit him five times in the first shooting at the jointly controlled area of the heavily fortified border in more than 30 years, the South’s military said Tuesday.

South Korean soldiers did not fire their weapons, but Monday’s incident occurred at a time of high animosity over North Korea’s nuclear program. The North has expressed intense anger over past high-profile defections.

The soldier is being treated at a South Korean hospital after a five-hour operation for the gunshot wounds he suffered during his escape across the Joint Security Area. His personal details and motive for defection are unknown and his exact medical condition is unclear.

South Korea’s military said he suffered injuries in his internal organs but wasn’t in a life-threatening condition. But the Ajou University Medical Center near Seoul said the soldier was relying on a breathing machine after the surgery removed the bullets. Lee Guk-jong, a doctor who leads Ajou’s medical team for the soldier, described his patient’s condition as “very dangerous” and said the next 10 days might determine whether he recovers.

On Monday, he first drove a military jeep but left the vehicle when one of its wheels fell into a ditch. He then fled across the JSA, with fellow soldiers chasing and firing at him, South Korea’s military said, citing unspecified surveillance systems installed in the area.

Suh Wook, chief director of operations for the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, told lawmakers that North Korea fired a total of about 40 rounds in a shooting that his office suggested started while the soldier was in the jeep.

The solider was found beneath a pile of leaves on the southern side of the JSA and South Korean troops crawled there to recover him. A U.N. Command helicopter later transported him to the Ajou medical center, according to South Korean officials.

The North’s official media haven’t reported the case as of Tuesday afternoon. They have previously accused South Korea of kidnapping or enticing North Koreans to defect. About 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea, mostly via China, since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

The JSA is jointly overseen by the American-led U.N. Command and by North Korea, with South Korean and North Korean border guards facing each other only meters (feet) apart. It is located inside the 4-kilometer-wide (2 1/2-mile-wide) Demilitarized Zone, which forms the de facto border between the Koreas since the Korean War. While both sides of the DMZ are guarded by barbed wire fences, mines and tank traps, the JSA includes the truce village of Panmunjom which provides the site for rare talks and draws curious tourists.

Monday’s incident was the first shooting at the Joint Security Area since North Korean and U.N. Command soldiers traded gunfire when a Soviet citizen defected by sprinting to the South Korean sector of the JSA in 1984. A North Korean soldier defected there in 1998 and another in 2007 but neither of those events involved gunfire between the rivals, according to South Korea’s military.

The 1984 exchange of gunfire happened after North Korean soldiers crossed the border and fired, according to the U.N. Command. In Monday’s incident, it wasn’t known if the North continued firing after the defector was officially in the southern part of the Joint Security Area. The U.N. Command said Tuesday that an investigation into the incident was underway.

The Joint Security Area was the site of some bloodshed during the Cold War but there hasn’t been major violence there in recent years. In 1976, North Korean soldiers axed two American army officers to death and the United States responded by flying nuclear-capable B-52 bombers toward the DMZ in an attempt to intimidate the North.

Amazon has unveiled the first trailer for its new series Comrade Detective, and while I think a lot of you are really going to dig this show, it might be a little too niche for mainstream audiences.

It’s being presented as a long-lost, hard-boiled Romanian cop show from the 1980s that’s recently been found and restored by Channing Tatum, who executive produces the show and has dubbed over the lead actor’s voice with his own. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Mahershala Ali, and tons of other great actors all contribute voiceovers, too. Check out the explosive first trailer below.

The framing device with Tatum seems unnecessarily confusing, but I watched a screener of the show’s first episode early this morning, and the gimmick is explained much more clearly in the actual series. It all becomes clear the minute you start watching: Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici play the lead roles (and in fact, most of the show’s cast and crew are based in Romania) but they’re dubbed by Tatum and a handful of more recognizable actors.

This trailer is pretty representative of the first episode, which is to say that it’s a little ridiculous, slightly humorous, and chock full of cop show and cop movie cliches. That said, I largely enjoyed the episode. If you grew up in America, you almost certainly grew up in a pop culture environment that has regularly demonized Communism with broad stereotypes, and this show turns the tables and does the same thing to capitalist America. In one scene, the two detectives voiced by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt walk into the American embassy in Bucharest, where there are two overweight Americans sitting in a corner chowing down on a pile of hamburgers with an American flag behind them. There’s also the fun “always bet on red” joke seen in the trailer, and a bunch of references to the benefits of Communism throughout the first episode. It looks like it’ll play with American iconography in some fun, fascinating ways.

The show may ruffle some people’s feathers because we’ve been conditioned to bristle at that ideology, but it’s all delivered tongue-in-cheek and considering our current standing in world events, America certainly doesn’t have any sort of moral superiority to lord over any other country, so it’s good timing for this type of show to come around and poke fun at it from the inside out.

Comrade Detective is created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, and it hits Amazon’s streaming service on August 4, 2017.

Amazon and A24 may have just genetically engineered a television show that perfectly aligns with my sensibilities. Comrade Detective, which debuts later this summer, is being made to look like a Romanian cop show from the 1980s, with Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici playing the lead roles. But here’s the part that will make people raise their eyebrows: Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are providing dubbed voiceovers for those characters, and they’ll be joined by a crazy-talented group of actors that will be doing some dubbing of their own. Read the full list of names in the Comrade Detective cast below.

Before we get to the cast, here’s the show’s official synopsis so you know what we’re dealing with:

In the thick of 1980’s Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country’s most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by — what else — the greatest enemy: capitalism. Though the beloved show was sadly forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has been rediscovered and digitally remastered now with its main heroes voiced by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective is a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be—and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before.

That sounds totally ridiculous – I’m imagining it sort of like a full-length version of Key & Peele’s Strike Force Eagle 3: The Reckoning. Now, get a load of this cast: Jenny Slate, Chloe Sevigny, Jake Johnson, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Kim Basinger, Mahershala Ali, Tracy Letts, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton Duplass, Jerrod Carmichael, Bo Burnham, and John Early. That rivals HBO’s Animals and Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer shows when it comes to gathering some of the best comedic voices working in the industry today.

This series was created by Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka (The Sitter), and has Rhys Thomas (Documentary Now!) lined up to direct, while Tatum will serve as an executive producer as well as voiceover actor. I feel like this has huge potential to be a hilarious and maybe even politically relevant piece of comedy, and it might be the last push I needed to convince me to finally pay for an Amazon Prime account.

Comrade Detective premieres on Amazon Prime Video in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on August 4, 2017.
