Mel and Jack’s relationship remains the hottest topic in town when Virgin River returns on Friday, Nov. 27. And no matter how hard they try, neither can be excluded from the narrative. When asked how Jack is doing atop the Netflix drama’s sophomore season, Martin Henderson tells TVLine, “Not great.” And can you blame him? Just as the emotionally damaged Marine was learning to open his heart to someone new, he discovered that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant. “As a character, Jack works primarily from a sense of honor and duty,” Henderson says. “Being a Marine is such an integral part of who he is, and that extends to his responsibilities as a future father and his desire to be there for Charmaine. Unfortunately, those duties are often at odds with what Mel would want, which makes for a messy, complicated triangle between the three. They’re all after certain things, and the negotiation is clumsy. Charmaine, of course, manipulates things to the best of her abilities, and then it’s up to Jack and Mel to navigate that in a way honors themselves and each other.” Alexandra Breckenridge echoes Henderson’s concerns about Charmaine, confirming that she’s “a little crazy pants. The thing is, Charmaine’s base level is already a little bit crazy, and then she gets pregnant… by her ex-boyfriend… who she’s still in love with.” (Hot take: We sympathize!) “But these are characters who just belong together. They’re like magnets, no matter how many obstacles keep getting thrown in their way.” But as much as Virgin River is the story of Mel and Jack’s romance, it’s also about both characters conquering their individual problems. Breckenridge acknowledges that Mel has “really worked through a lot of the grief that she experienced in the first season, and she learned to sort of open up her heart again. She’s a survivor. She’s going to get back up again and make the best of it.” As for Jack, Henderson says we’ll get into “some of the things he’s still struggling with from Iraq, the demons he’s plagued with, and how he attempts to push all of that down. It all starts to bubble up as he feels the pressure of what he’s up against with Charmaine and the baby. And I’m glad that we see more of that aspect of him. He’s not just this romance novel hero. He’s flawed and he’s struggling.” We’ll leave you with this tease from showrunner Sue Tenney. “You’ll see Jack and Mel struggle against their attraction in Season 2, and you’ll see what happens if they succumb to it. You’ll see what that means for their future — and how that future gets massively complicated in the very last moments of the season.” What are your hopes and predictions for Virgin River‘s second season? Drop ’em in a comment below. Warning: The following interview contains spoilers about Season 3, Episode 3 of The Good Doctor. The Good Doctor‘s Claire suffered a major loss on Monday — and it wasn’t a patient. After successfully completing her first surgery, Dr. Browne received a life-changing phone call: Her alcoholic mom Breeze (played since Season 1 by Sharon Leal) died in a drunk-driving accident after getting her hands on the one bottle of champagne that Claire kept in her apartment. Below, Claire’s portrayer, Antonia Thomas, walks us through that intense final scene and previews how Breeze’s death will impact her character moving forward. TVLINE | What was it like shooting those final scenes between Claire and Breeze, knowing that this was Sharon Leal’s last episode? TVLINE | When you first read that last scene at the crash site, were you at all surprised that Claire walked up to the car and saw Breeze in the driver’s seat? In most shows, you tend to see the next of kin arrive after the victim has been removed from the wreckage. TVLINE | How would you describe what Claire is feeling in that moment? Is she completely numb to what’s happened? TVLINE | I have to imagine there’s also some guilt, even if Breeze’s alcoholism was out of Claire’s control. TVLINE | And beyond those recent promises, Claire has always had to step in and rescue Breeze from her many demons. TVLINE | How would you describe Claire’s state of mind in the following episode? TVLINE | Claire has been there for Shaun to help navigate this new relationship with Carly. Is he able to return the favor and support her in the wake of this traumatic event? What did you think of The Good Doctor‘s Claire-centric hour? Drop your thoughts in a comment below. The simplest way of explaining BH90210 without making it sound like an episode of Black Mirror is that it’s a scripted drama set in an alternate reality where Beverly Hills, 90210 aired just as we remember it, only the private lives of its stars are completely different. For example, Brian Austin Green is playing himself, but rather than being married to Megan Fox, this version of Green is married to an R&B superstar named Shay (played by Power‘s La La Anthony). This detachment from reality effectively neuters the show’s myriad soapy storylines — ranging from financial woes to extramarital escapades — giving the whole thing an unfortunately low-stakes vibe. In the second episode, Jason Priestley’s “wife” (played by Vanessa Lachey) tries to convince him to board a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot: “Think of the possibilities,” she says. “Brandon and Kelly, back together? People would eat it up!” And she’s right, they would. So why, instead, is Fox giving us an entire show about not-Brandon and not-Kelly not together? Aside from not knowing what its audience wants, the show also doesn’t seem to know what it is. We’ve already established that it lacks the dramatic intrigue of the original series, but with scripts largely devoid of humor, it doesn’t quite work as a comedy, either. During an audition in Episode 2, Green reads a movie script and remarks, “Is this a comedy or a drama? It almost reads like it doesn’t know what it is.” The fact that the show proudly flaunts its own nonsense is… a choice. The show’s saving grace is its nostalgia factor, which is admittedly strong. Tonight’s premiere (8/7c) finds the old Peach Pit crew — Spelling, Green, Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering and Gabrielle Carteris — reuniting at a Beverly Hills, 90210 fan convention for the show’s 30th anniversary, and it’s damn good to see everybody together again. (Shannen Doherty joins the fun shortly thereafter.) And maybe that’s enough for you. Maybe you’re the kind of die-hard 90210 fan who would pay good money to watch the cast read from the phonebook for a few weeks, in which case you’ll probably love this meta reboot. Otherwise, you’re better off just clicking through a “Where Are They Now?” gallery and calling it a day. THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE | While BH90210 is good for a quick nostalgia fix, the novelty doesn’t last long, leaving you with a convoluted, low-stakes dramedy that — like its audience — deserves so much better.
Like Oliver Queen before her, Kate Kane will not be a polished, full-blown vigilante when Batwoman makes its debut this fall on The CW. Speaking with TVLine on Thursday at the Upfronts, Batwoman star Ruby Rose said that a show such as this runs the risk of not seeming grounded if it straight away overdoes it with superhero derring-do. Instead, we will get to know Gotham City’s Kate Kane (aka Bruce Wayne’s cousin), her father Jacob and several other characters before Batwoman suits up. As you may have surmised, Rose confirms that Batwoman (airing Sundays at 8/7c this fall) begins before the titular crimefighter crossed paths with Green Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl (in last year’s “Elseworlds” crossover event). In our video Q&A above, the Aussie actress also sings the praises of on-screen adversary Rachel Skarsten (Reign), who plays Wonderland gang leader Alice; offers an overview of what Batwoman’s support team might end up looking like; and then weighs in on the out hero’s love life. The official synopsis for Batwoman is below: Kate Kane never planned to be Gotham’s new vigilante. Three years after Batman mysteriously disappeared, Gotham is a city in despair. Without the Caped Crusader, the Gotham City Police Department was overrun and outgunned by criminal gangs. Enter Jacob Kane (played by Dougray Scott) and his military-grade Crows Private Security, which now protects the city with omnipresent firepower and militia. Years before, Jacob’s first wife and daughter were killed in the crossfire of Gotham crime. He sent his only surviving daughter, Kate Kane, away from Gotham for her safety. After a dishonorable discharge from military school and years of brutal survival training, Kate returns home when the Alice in Wonderland gang targets her father and his security firm, by kidnapping his best Crow officer Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy). Although remarried to wealthy socialite Catherine Hamilton-Kane (Elizabeth Anweis), who bankrolls the Crows, Jacob is still struggling with the family he lost, while keeping Kate –– the daughter he still has –– at a distance. But Kate is a woman who’s done asking for permission. In order to help her family and her city, she’ll have to become the one thing her father loathes –– a dark knight vigilante. With the help of her compassionate stepsister, Mary (Nicole Kang), and the crafty Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), the son of Wayne Enterprises’ tech guru Lucius Fox, Kate Kane continues the legacy of her missing cousin, Bruce Wayne, as Batwoman. Still holding a flame for her ex-girlfriend, Sophie, Kate uses everything in her power to combat the dark machinations of the psychotic Alice (Rachel Skarsten), who’s always somewhere slipping between sane and insane. Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate soars through the shadowed streets of Gotham as Batwoman. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, she must first overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

I loved working with her, but it was tricky. I was very conscious of not playing the ending before the ending. Knowing this was going to be her last episode… made it all the more sad every single time you saw them take a step forward and connect.
It was totally shocking. I think most of the time somebody is lucky enough to not have to see that, but in this version of events, it was playing the reality of it. She got there just after it happened, and maybe it’s a crime scene, so yeah, totally shocking.
It’s a mixture of things. Yes, I think she is numb to what has happened. But also, it has been such a build with her mother trying to win back her trust, and Claire has taken a big step by letting her back into her life [based] upon all these promises that Breeze made.
She feels a major sense of guilt. She looks in the car and sees the champagne bottle, the one bottle that she left for herself. She was [anticipating] doing well in surgery, and she wanted to celebrate — and that’s the thing that killed her mother. She feels like it was her own little selfish moment that led to this. But there’s also anger, because her mother promised that she wouldn’t do this.
It’s complicated. With Claire’s mom, there’s always been a push and pull in terms of who had to be the parent. This was the moment where Claire failed at that in the most ultimate way… It’s a complicated cocktail of emotions.
The way that she deals with [Breeze’s death] is relatively unusual. Although Claire is very open with her patients and empathetic in that way, when it comes to herself, she kind of goes into shutdown mode, and that is something we are exploring quite heavily. You’re going to see an interesting change.
It’s interesting, because Shaun is quite bound up with what’s happening with him and Carly. Obviously, he’s a great friend to Claire, but she’s not as transparent about her life. So it falls to another colleague that you may not necessarily expect to be there for her, and they form a slightly unlikely bond over this, which has been really lovely to play. I’m not going to say who, but you’ll find out soon enough.

BH90210 is easily the weirdest show to air on Fox since The Masked Singer, and it’s merely a coincidence that both happen to heavily feature Tori Spelling. Don’t get us wrong, we’re thrilled that the entire original Beverly Hills, 90210 cast agreed to do a new show together. We’re just not sure why it had to be this show.

It’s been a minute since Power‘s Tommy got himself into some big, hairy trouble. Don’t worry — he more than makes up for that in this week’s episode.
Mr. Egan finds himself in two kinds of new trouble by the end of the hour, and at one of the complications seriously messes with Ghost’s plan to avenge Raina’s death. On the bright side: Watching Tommy tap dance on some very volatile landmines is always entertaining — and he does plenty of shuffle-ball-changes in this week’s installment.
