Julian Assange has accused his Ecuadorean hosts of spying and feeding information to US authorities, and slammed attempts to block his journalistic work as a more subtle way of silencing than the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Suggesting there were “facts of espionage” inside the embassy, the WikiLeaks co-founder expressed concern during a hearing in Quito on Wednesday that Ecuadorean intelligence is not only spying on him, but sharing the data it has harvested with the FBI. Ecuadorean intelligence clearly spent a sizable amount of money equipping the embassy for surveillance, Assange added.

He accused Ecuadorean authorities of “comments of a threatening nature” relating to his journalistic work and compared attempts to silence him to the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who was tortured and cut up in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in October, but “more subtle.”  The comparison elicited a harsh reaction from Ecuadorean Prosecutor General Inigo Salvador, who accused Assange of biting the hand that feeds him.

Assange told the Ecuadorean court that the living conditions in the embassy were so detrimental to his health that they may put him in the hospital – and suggested that may be the point, because once he leaves the building, he’s fair game for UK and US authorities.

US prosecutors accidentally revealed the existence of a sealed indictment against the whistleblower last month and have since stonewalled reporters’ inquiries into what the indictment might contain.

While Assange was being held incommunicado earlier this year, his suspicions about his hosts’ spying were confirmed in a May report by the Guardian that revealed Ecuador spent about $ 5 million on surveilling the WikiLeaks founder and his visitors in the London embassy from 2012 until 2017. However, that paper’s recent publication of blatantly “fake news” involving Assange casts its earlier coverage into doubt as well.

Assange was in court appealing a strict set of rules handed down in October governing his conduct, which he has called a violation of human rights. He submitted 15 “facts of evidence” along with letters from individuals and groups barred from visiting him at the embassy. An earlier attempt to sue his hosts over the restrictive measures was ultimately dismissed by a judge last month, while Assange rejected Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno’s offer to leave the embassy in exchange for a guarantee he would not be executed.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s midseason finale of The Walking Dead. Watch first, read later.

If there was one person who wasn’t dismayed that Jesus became the Whisperers’ first victim in Sunday’s midseason finale of The Walking Dead, it was Tom Payne, who played the Hilltop’s reluctant leader.

“It was a mutual [decision], and I was really happy about it,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that “I expressed unhappiness [to the producers] last season…. You can’t help but feel a little bit despondent when you’re not released to do some cool stuff” on the show.

Mind you, it wasn’t that he disliked his role. On the contrary, “I loved the character,” he insists. “But there was just so much potential [based on the comic-book Jesus]… that wasn’t realized. [So] I wasn’t sad to say goodbye to that frustration. It was constant.”

As for Jesus and Aaron, while Payne thinks that it was “unfair to the audience, to tease that relationship,” he maintains that to have paired them up would have “been a bit lazy: ‘Here are two gay characters. They should get together!’”

Were you bummed to see Jesus silenced by the Whisperers? Hit the comments.

California’s net neutrality law will cause “significant lost revenues” for Comcast, the nation’s largest cable company said in a court filing this month.

Comcast described the net neutrality law’s potential impact on its ability to charge online service providers and network operators for network interconnection.

“The paid interconnection provisions will harm Comcast’s ability to enter into new, mutually beneficial interconnection agreements with edge providers that involve consideration, leading to a loss of existing and prospective interconnection partners and significant lost revenues,” Comcast Senior VP Ken Klaer wrote in the filing in US District Court for the Eastern District of California. (“Edge provider” is the industry term for websites and other online platforms, such as Netflix and Google.)

‘Mentally tortured’ Tommy Robinson complains of no TV during prison stint, likens it to GITMO https://briefnews.eu/mentally-tortured-tommy-robinson-complains-of-no-tv-during-prison-stint-likens-it-to-gitmo/ https://briefnews.eu/mentally-tortured-tommy-robinson-complains-of-no-tv-during-prison-stint-likens-it-to-gitmo/#respond Sat, 04 Aug 2018 18:24:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mentally-tortured-tommy-robinson-complains-of-no-tv-during-prison-stint-likens-it-to-gitmo/

Recently released Tommy Robinson claims he was ‘mentally tortured’ in prison complaining of no TV, inability to eat prison food and being moved to facility with larger Muslims population.

Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, the former leader of the English Defence League (EDL) got a 13 month sentence in May for contempt of court. On Wednesday, the defense team for the darling of the British and international right successfully appealed the sentence and he was released on bail pending a retrial.

In several prison complaint forms posted to his Facebook page on Friday, Robinson’s claims of mistreatment included being moved from a prison where only 7% of inmates were Muslim to one where a third of them are; being locked up for 23 hours a day “for his own protection,”; and accused prison authorities of “punishing” him with no TV access in his cell.

“I’d like to be given a TV as I feel I am being mentally tortured,” he wrote.

Another complaint form saw him request “extra spends” in order to buy more food as paranoia over what people preparing his meals might do to it had resulted in him losing weight as he was only able to eat canned food.

“This would make up a bit for being held in isolation,” Robinson said.

The prison service has rejected the claims, with a spokesperson saying “Mr Yaxley-Lennon was treated with the same fairness we aim to show all prisoners.”

It added that claims of being held in solitary confinement were “totally false.”

Since his release, Robinson has refused to talk to mainstream media in the UK, accusing a BBC reporter asking for comment upon his release that “all you do is lie.”

Speaking to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on Friday, Robinson documented his mistreatment further, saying that he had to keep his windows and doors closed during the recent spell of hot weather for fear of having other prisoners spit or throw excrement into his cell.

“I was supposed to be in Her Majesty’s Prison Service, not Guantanamo Bay,” he said.

His Guantanamo Bay claim has received derision online, with British ex-Guantanamo prisoner and activist Moazzam Begg accusing Robinson of not being able to “handle a few weeks inside.”

During his Fox interview, Robinson also disclosed a never-mentioned-before Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) obtained from a previous five-month spell in solitary confinement when he was in prison in 2012.

In October 2012 Robinson was arrested for illegally entering the United States under a false passport while concealing a previous drug conviction.

After spending Christmas in jail, he was convicted and sentenced to 10 months in January 2013.

Other convictions include assault, participation in mass brawls and mortgage fraud.

Since his most recent incarceration, he has seen a swelling in support both within the UK and from the US and European political right. He has also received more than £20,000 in Bitcoin donations since he was jailed in May.

Trump says Nunes memo ‘totally vindicates’ him, complains that everyone only talks about ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-nunes-memo-totally-vindicates-him-complains-that-everyone-only-talks-about-russia-russia-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-nunes-memo-totally-vindicates-him-complains-that-everyone-only-talks-about-russia-russia-russia/#respond Sun, 04 Feb 2018 00:57:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-says-nunes-memo-totally-vindicates-him-complains-that-everyone-only-talks-about-russia-russia-russia/ Donald Trump

  • In a tweet Saturday morning, President Donald Trump said the GOP memo that was released Friday “totally vindicates” him in the Russia investigation.
  • The tweet undermines claims from House Speaker Paul Ryan that the memo is a completely separate matter from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.
  • The memo claims that top law-enforcement officials acted improperly when signing off on the secret surveillance of a former Trump campaign adviser.

President Donald Trump slammed the special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation in a tweet Saturday morning, pointing to a controversial memo as evidence of bias against him at the FBI and the Department of Justice.

“This memo totally vindicates ‘Trump’ in probe. But the Russian Witch Hunt goes on and on,” Trump tweeted. “Their [sic] was no Collusion and there was no Obstruction (the word now used because, after one year of looking endlessly and finding NOTHING, collusion is dead). This is an American disgrace!”

Trump reportedly complains about why he can’t just have ‘my guys’ at the ‘Trump Justice Department’ do his bidding https://briefnews.eu/trump-reportedly-complains-about-why-he-cant-just-have-my-guys-at-the-trump-justice-department-do-his-bidding/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-reportedly-complains-about-why-he-cant-just-have-my-guys-at-the-trump-justice-department-do-his-bidding/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 02:49:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-reportedly-complains-about-why-he-cant-just-have-my-guys-at-the-trump-justice-department-do-his-bidding/ Donald Trump

  • President Donald Trump reportedly complained about why he can’t get “my guys” at the “Trump Justice Department” to do his bidding.
  • The comments were published in a Saturday Washington Post report.

President Donald Trump has complained in recent weeks that he doesn’t understand why he can’t just order “my guys” at the “Trump Justice Department” to do his bidding, two people familiar with the remarks told The Washington Post.

The Post reported Saturday that Trump made the comments to aides and confidants as other examples of the president’s effort to influence the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether his campaign colluded with Russian officials are reported. Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that Trump ordered White House counsel Donald McGahn to fire special counsel Robert Mueller last June, but McGahn threatened to resign, which caused Trump to back off.

The comments were published in a story that highlighted how Trump sought to make public a secret document that Republicans believe could undermine Mueller’s investigation. Trump made clear that his desire is to release the memo, which is at odds with the Justice Department’s position. The Post reported that White House chief of staff John Kelly made clear to Attorney General Jeff Sessions what Trump’s view on the matter was.

The DOJ earlier warned that releasing the memo authored by staff for House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, a California Republican, would be “extraordinarily reckless” without an official review.

Whether or not the document is released is ultimately up to Congress. It suggests the FBI possibly relied on politically motivated and questionable sources to obtain a surveillance warrant in the early days of the probe.

A senior administration official told The Post that Trump “is inclined to have that released just because it will shed light.”

“Apparently all the rumors are that it will shed light, it will help the investigators come to a conclusion,” they added.

Twitter suspends RT’s ‘UK Embassy’ account created for historical project after London complains https://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/ https://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 15:23:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/ The UK Foreign Office is apparently so concerned with protecting its brand that it asked Twitter to suspend an RT account which reports what London diplomats had to say about Russia back in 1917 as part of a historical reenactment.

The account in question was created as part of RT’s 1917LIVE project, which gives people the chance to experience the atmosphere of the Russian Empire as it was undergoing dramatic changes and eventual collapse a century ago.

Dozens of interconnected accounts named after historical figures like then-Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky or Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin tweet comments on the events of one hundred years ago.

The account @BritishEmb1917 spoke with the voice of the British diplomatic mission of the time. It was described as “the official Twitter account of the United Kingdom in the Russian Empire” and carried the official crest of the office.

Apparently, the initiative did not sit well with Britain’s current Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as it reported the account to Twitter as an imposter.

“We alerted Twitter to an unofficial account that was using HMG branding without consent,” an FCO spokesman said, The Guardian reports.

RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan reacted to the development by asking: “Whatever happened to my beloved English humor?”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange also drew attention to the suspension on his Twitter feed. “UK government gets Twitter to suspend RT account showing what the FCO was saying in 1917 about Russian revolution,” he tweeted.

Some historical figures of 1917LIVE offered their opinions of what had transpired. ‘General Brusilov’ remarked that the suspension called into question the UK’s commitment to its Entente ally Russia, especially after London rejected asylum to members of the deposed Romanov family. Aleksey Brusilov was a World War I commander in the Russian Army who was credited with one of the greatest feats in the war – the Brusilov offensive.

‘General Kornilov’ (another prominent Russian military commander and later a leader of the counter-Bolshevik ‘White Movement’) suggested that Twitter should instead suspend all Bolshevik propaganda and Vladimir Lenin himself. ‘Bolshevik Mikhailov’ praised Twitter for banning an “account of imperialist UK” while the ‘German Kaizer’ said the Second Reich’s victory over Russia on social media will be followed by a victory on the battlefield.

On a more serious note, head of RT Social Media Operations Ivor Crotty said the move by the FCO “to subvert the project, without ever contacting its creators” was “extremely disappointing.”

“When we created the accounts for 1917LIVE, including the 1917 UK Embassy in Russia account, they were white-listed, approved and given official status by Twitter,” he said, adding that the British Embassy was informed of the project beforehand and “showed no interest,” neither supporting it nor objecting to it.

“To take undisclosed action behind closed doors and seek the removal of an innocent Twitter account clearly recounting historic circumstances, are acts that are difficult to interpret as anything other than elitism and disdain for innovative attempts to build bridges, digital or otherwise,” Crotty said.

“We should all be disappointed by this – Russians, Brits and all with an interest in History.”

Twitter suspended the account on August 7, and neither the microblogging service nor the British Embassy in Moscow have so far provided the 1917LIVE project team comments on the situation.

The historical project was launched in February and has followed those turbulent times in Russia’s history, including the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and the failed attempts of the provisional government to stabilize the situation, with the Bolshevik uprising looming two months ahead.

1917LIVE has held online Q&A sessions with historical figures of the revolutionary year, livestreamed from fugitive Lenin’s hideout, and showed how children perceived the historic events as they happened.

The fictional Russian Telegraph newspaper, which serves as the Twitter hub of the project, has almost 50,000 followers, while the entire community of 1917LIVE accounts has reached over 100,000. The project has drawn global attention from historians, political scientists, media professionals, and history buffs.

Netanyahu complains to UN chief Israel is being treated unfairly https://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-complains-to-un-chief-israel-is-being-treated-unfairly/ https://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-complains-to-un-chief-israel-is-being-treated-unfairly/#respond Mon, 28 Aug 2017 20:08:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-complains-to-un-chief-israel-is-being-treated-unfairly/ The UN is treating Israel unfairly by diminishing its ties to Jerusalem and not doing enough to curb arms deliveries to Hezbollah, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, complained to visiting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Monday.

Benjamin Netanyahu lashed out at the UN in the presence of Guterres, who is in the Middle East to try and facilitate the resumption of peace talks between Israel and Palestine.

Netanyahu said the United Nations treats Israel unfairly and “absurdly denies” Jewish connections to Jerusalem which Israel claims as its capital, while the UN views East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory which Israel occupied illegally under international law.

Netanyahu’s other complaint to the UN was that it was not keeping Palestinian hate speech against Israel in check.

He also blamed the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, for being too soft on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement which is seeking the destruction of the Jewish State, according to the Israeli prime minister.

UNIFIL has failed to report on the “tens of thousands of weapons smuggling into Lebanon for Hezbollah,” he said as cited by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Guterres promised Netanyahu “to do everything in my capacity” to make sure the peacekeepers fulfill their obligations in Lebanon.

“I understand the security concerns ofIsrael and I repeat that the idea or the intention or the will to destroy the state of Israel is something totally unacceptable from my perspective,” he said.

They also discussed a UN construction project in Jerusalem’s Armon Hanatziv neighborhood, which Israeli officials say is being carried out illegally and without a permit. Netanyahu told Guterres that the UN should abide by the rules of construction and Israeli laws, Arutz Sheva reported.

Netanyahu and Guterres agreed that Israel and the UN would attempt to negotiate a compromise solution that would be in line with Israeli law.

As for attempts to bring back Israel and Palestine to the negotiations table, Guterres asked Netanyahu to work towards improving the Palestinian economy so that the Palestinians could realize the benefits of peace.

Netanyahu accuses Iran of building missile sites in Syria, Lebanon

Netanyahu also told the visiting UN Secretary-General that Iran was constructing missile production sites in Syria and Lebanon.

Tehran is turning Syria “into a base of military entrenchment, and it wants to use Syria and Lebanon as warfronts against its declared goal to eradicate Israel,” he claims, as cited by Reuters.

“It is also building sites to produce precision-guided missiles towards that end, in both Syria and in Lebanon. This is something Israel cannot accept. This is something the UN should not accept,” the Israeli PM said.

Netanyahu provided no proof of his accusations against Tehran, but his statement comes a few weeks after Israel’s Channel 2 News showed images of what it called a construction site of an Iranian long-range missile production facility in northern Syria.

According to the broadcaster, the pictures were captured by an Israeli satellite not far from the Syrian Mediterranean coastal town of Baniyas.

Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, have been helping the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad in his battle against terrorists in the country. Last week, Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel was ready for one-sided actions should Iranian forces not withdraw from Syria.

“Israel opposes Iran’s continued entrenchment in Syria. We will be sure to defend ourselves with all means against this and any threat,” he said.

The Israeli PM has been also working hard to persuade the US that the main threat in Syria is not from not Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, but from Tel Aviv’s main geopolitical rival, Iran.

Guterres decries threats against Israel as “modern anti-Semitism”

Earlier on Monday, Guterres visited a Holocaust Museum and met with the Israeli president, Reuven Rivlin, saying that calls for the annihilation on the Jewish state were a “form of modern anti-Semitism.”

He didn’t back Rivlin’s claims of “the discrimination against Israel” in some UN affiliates.

“I sometimes disagree with [the] positions of the government of Israel,” Guterres said, emphasizing that as the UN General-Secretary, he’s committed to “treating all states equally.”

Guterres will hold talks with the Palestinian prime minister, Rami Hamdallah in the West Bank Tuesday and will then travel to Gaza Wednesday as part of his first trip to the region since taking office on January 1.

The Secretary-General will also meet the families of the two slain Israeli soldiers who had been held by Hamas since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

Guterres isn’t expected to negotiate with any Hamas representatives, but Israeli sources told Haaretz he can influence the armed Palestinian group indirectly via Qatar and Egypt.

President Donald Trump railed against the media on Monday, hours after he delivered his latest remarks on the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, suggesting reporters “will never be satisfied” with the way he responded to the violence.

Trump initially addressed the violence during an unrelated event on Saturday.

Republicans and Democrats immediately criticized Trump for attempting to lay blame “on many sides,” while initially choosing not to call out white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and Ku Klux Klan members specifically — a move that the White House attempted to justify in a series of anonymous statements.

However, it wasn’t until Monday, two days after Trump’s original statement, that he denounced white supremacy in a new statement, saying “Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs — including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists.”

As part of the annual US budget process, the NASA administrator meets with the appropriations subcommittees in the Senate and House to discuss the president’s budget request. Under the new president, NASA doesn’t yet have an administrator, so acting administrator Robert Lightfoot is making the rounds. On Thursday morning he met with the Senate’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies.

Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) chairs this committee, which writes the budget for NASA and therefore wields extraordinary power over the nation’s civil space activities. During Thursday’s hearing, Shelby renewed his longstanding concerns about the space agency’s commercial crew program—the NASA-funded efforts by Boeing and SpaceX to develop capsules and rockets to carry US astronauts to the International Space Station.

The agency had hoped for an operational capability by the end of 2017, but now that is likely to slip into early or mid-2019. Shelby asked about rising costs and delays. “What assurance can you give this committee that there will be no more cost increases or delays?” Shelby said, querying Lightfoot. “Can you do that?”
