  • President Donald Trump reportedly sought to ease Russian President Vladimir Putin’s concerns that White House officials were trying to block a phone call between the two.
  • After Putin told Trump that White House advisers were trying to interfere, Trump reportedly called those advisers “stupid people,” and told Putin he “shouldn’t listen to them.”
  • The report emerged ahead of a scheduled NATO summit at Brussels on Tuesday. Trump is expected to participate in a one-on-one meeting with Putin in Finland next week.

During a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in March, President Donald Trump reportedly sought to ease Putin’s concerns that White House officials were trying to block a conversation between the two.

After Putin mentioned that White House officials were trying to interfere, a person with direct knowledge of the conversation said that Trump told to Putin, “Those are stupid people; you shouldn’t listen to them,” The New York Times reported Monday.

  • The US government is partially shutdown, but members of Congress are still using their exclusive gym. 
  • Some members of the House of Representatives complained to The Washington Post that there weren’t enough towels stacked in the gym Saturday morning, and they wondered whether it was because of the shutdown. 
  • People on Twitter criticized lawmakers for complaining about the relatively trivial matter amid the shutdown. 

Congress is currently scrambling to re-open the government after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill late Friday night, forcing a partial shutdown.

But some on Capitol Hill are concerned about the private gyms that are available exclusively for lawmakers. 

“Members also complaining to me that the House gym lacks enough towels this morning and they wonder if it’s because of the shutdown,” Robert Acosta, a Washington Post reporter, said in a tweet Saturday morning. 

Although some federal programs and branches close during a shutdown, the exclusive House and Senate workout facilities appear to have remained open. 

Acosta’s tweet about the House members’ complaints drew outrage on Twitter.

During the 16-day government shutdown in 2013, the exclusive gyms stayed open, but towel service was unavailable, ThinkProgress reported at the time. The House gym features a pool, basketball courts, a sauna, steam room, and flat screen TVs. Taxpayers fund the cleaning and maintenance.  

Deliberations between the Democratic and Republican party leadership over a funding bill are ongoing in an attempt to end the shutdown, but the two sides are also engaged in a nasty blame game. Republicans blame Democrats — particularly Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — for blocking a key vote Friday night that would’ve averted the shutdown. Democrats, meanwhile, blame President Donald Trump for reneging on a deal they reached prior to the vote.

Twitter cofounder Biz Stone has been hit with a deluge of criticism after complaining that people are “so dismissive of the Trust and Safety team” — the Twitter employees responsible for policing abuse on the platform.

Following an exchange between two users over Twitter’s approach to US President Donald Trump’s inflammatory tweets, Stone responded: “Y’all pile on us. You really think the issue doesn’t weigh on us? And you’re so dismissive of the Trust and Safety team. We’re all people.”

But users lambasted the exec for what they viewed as a tone-deaf response, highlighting Twitter’s infamous problem with abuse and harassment and arguing the company should try to fix alleged failings rather than attack its critics for pointing them out.

“Like yeah there are good people working in broken systems. But the system is broken and companies being criticized [is not equal to people] threatening [people],” replied Zoe Quinn, a game developer who has been a constant target of organised harassment on Twitter.

“And I’ve been in those rooms with y’all and heard endless streams of excuses from all levels for years about why you won’t help. To my face … So if this shit weighs on you, take it up with your bosses. Not people who are hurting because of your company’s inaction.”

Meanwhile, the user @stonekettle wrote: “Dude, stop. I’ve reported/blocked hundreds of bots, trolls, bigots, haters, racists, etc. You don’t care. You don’t do ANYTHING about it … I’ve been attacked by actual Nazis on this platform. Twitter did NOTHING. Trust and Safety. Hilarious.”

Another user, Traci, agreed: “Same here. Also threats of rape, stalking, etc. yet nada done by Twitter.”

One of the longest critical responses came from Yonatam Zungr, a former Google employee, in the form of a tweetstorm. “I worked on policy issues at G+ and YT for years. It was *painfully* obvious that Twitter never took them seriously. Twitter was so enamored of the idea that they had helped catalyze the Arab Spring that ‘free speech’ became an unexamined article of faith,” he wrote.

“It’s hard to think of a single case where Twitter’s answer wasn’t ‘allow everything, make it users’ responsibility to block.’ Even when it was very clear that this imposed unscalable burdens on individual users, silenced *their* speech, or created public risks. And Trump using Twitter was clearly far too exciting to leadership as well: ‘OMG we’re right in the middle of the political process!'”

He added: “Twitter chose to optimize for traffic at the expense of user experience. That’s why GamerGate, that’s why Trump, that’s why Nazis.

The furore stems, in part, from Twitter’s approach to Trump. There have been repeated calls from some critics for the social network to ban the US president, arguing his posts fall foul of Twitter’s rules and could start a war.

Stone, who also cofounded blogging platform Medium, changed his tone in a subsequent tweet. “I really appreciate all the responses. (Apologies—my words didn’t come out right.)” He wrote. “We’re listening. Thank you for all this feedback.”

Twitter has grappled with the problem of harassment for years. Back in 2015, then-CEO Dick Costolo admitted in an internal memo that “we suck at dealing with abuse and trolls and we’ve sucked at it for years … we lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.”

But the responses to Stone’s tweet show that many users believe Twitter still hasn’t managed to solve the problem.

Case in point: On September 29, Stone was asked whether a neo-Nazi “white power” tweet that used slurs for Jews and black people was “newsworthy.”

“You know it’s not,” he responded. “It’s disgusting. I reported it, and I hope you did too.”

But a full week after the it was posted, and three days after a Twitter cofounder apparently reported it, the tweet remains available to view on Twitter.

The luxury five-bed detached house had to be transformed into a bungalow after council officials ruled in favour of the complaints.

The property was bought by a family of four before Swansea Council ordered the home to remove its roof and top floor, after developers lost a two-year “upstairs, downstairs” legal row.

Neighbours had complained the property’s roof was two metres too high and walls three metres too close, meaning its windows looked straight down on their own homes.

The family moved into the luxury property on Ladysmith Road shortly after it was built in 2013.

But a number of residents living in the older neighbouring Gelli Aur street raised issues with the building’s height to Swansea Council.

Builders Hale Construction challenged council orders to have it downsized, but eventually lost their two-year planning appeal in July 2015 when inspectors ruled it was “unacceptable, oppressive and overbearing”.

It meant the family were forced to move out while work began to remove its upper levels, before being forced to sell their dream home just three years after moving in.

Neighbour John Cursio, 41, said his elderly parents had now moved into the converted bungalow after buying it off the family for £185,000. 

Mr Cursio said: “I think the complaints were done out of sheer spite really. I don’t know if it’s jealousy or what.

He added: “The family who originally bought it took a massive hit. They had to move out after being on licence for four years.”

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: “Enforcement action was taken by the council after the developer constructed the property too near a neighbouring property and also because it was built higher than the original plans. 

“Subsequently the council has approved an application for the site which requires the partial demolition of the structure and replaced by a single story development. 

“We received a number of complaints about the property and following an investigation, enforcement action was taken. 

“We would urge developers to ensure properties that are being constructed are in line with approved plans otherwise there is a risk that enforcement will be necessary and could result in demolition. 

“There are no issues in relation to the completed dwelling which is now occupied.” 

Hale Construction managing director David Harrhy did not respond to a request for comment.

The Last Jedi is due in cinemas at the end of this year and was finally teased last week with the release of the first teaser trailer.

Now speaking to ABC’s Nightline, he’s revealed that the storyline does not take Luke Skywalker in the direction he was expecting.

“When I read [episode] eight I told Rian, ‘I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you’ve decided about my character’,” he revealed.

“But it might be a good sign! Because I was really wrong about [episode] seven].”

Recalling his concerns with The Force Awakens, he added: “I said, ‘when I turn around, the audience are going to hoot and holler because it’s such an obvious cheat!’

“I didn’t foresee John Williams’ incredibly music and the shots of Daisy [Ridley], the build-up to it. I was never happier to be wrong.”

Ridley, incidentally, also had stern words for Johnson when she found out about Rey’s trajectory this time around.

“I went to Rian’s office and was like, ‘we need to have a talk about what’s happening here’,” she quipped.
