On Friday, oil major Royal Dutch Shell and German energy storage company Sonnen announced that Shell would acquire Sonnen for an undisclosed amount.

Sonnen has been one of the top competitors with Tesla’s Powerwall in the US home battery market. The company built its base in Germany, attaching batteries for self-consumption to homes with solar panels. Sonnen now claims 40,000 batteries installed in households in Germany, the US, and Australia.

The company’s assets include proprietary software that optimizes a home’s battery use in combination with solar power.

Kobo’s newest e-reader is going after fans of Amazon’s Kindle Oasis. The new Kobo Forma is the company’s most expensive and comprehensive e-reader yet, coming in at $ 279 and featuring a waterproof design and an E-ink Mobius display.

Seemingly cut from the same cloth as the Kindle Oasis, the Kobo Forma has an 8-inch display with a large bezel on one edge for gripping. This pseudo-chin has buttons in its center that can be used to flip through pages when the device is either landscape or portrait mode. It’s uncommon to see e-readers used in landscape mode, but it’s a cool feature to have for those who may prefer it (possibly after getting used to reading in landscape mode using smartphones or tablets).

The new punitive measures the US imposed on buyers of Russian weapons – China in particular – is just a sign of unfair competition, aiming to get rid of “hyper-competitive” Russian-made arms, the Kremlin says.

Moscow is already “tired” of reacting to every single hostile move from Washington, but will not let the latest batch of restrictions go unpunished, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Friday.

The statement came after the Trump administration added 33 Russian defense and intelligence officials and entities to the sanctions list and also targeted the Equipment Development Department, China’s leading arms acquisition body, for buying Russian arms.

There are two key factors behind the latest restrictions, Moscow believes. Apart from “unfair competition” that actually violates international trade laws and principles, Washington just wants to clear the way for its own arms dealers.

The move is merely an attempt to “squeeze out of the markets the main competitor of American producers,” as Russian arms are often “hyper-competitive,” the Kremlin spokesman said. The “hostile” move will only further harm US-Russian relations, which Peskov characterized as already in a “sorry state.”

Washington’s recent sanctions have already drawn an indignant response from Beijing. On Friday, China’s Foreign Ministry warned that the US will have to bear the consequences unless it drops the restrictions.

A startup called Standard Cognition hopes to steal some of Amazon’s thunder by opening a cashierless store in San Francisco — Amazon Go currently has three stores, all in the Seattle area. Standard Cognition’s store is open to the public now, and it’s the first real-world test for the company’s retail ambitions.

Located in the Mid-Market neighborhood, Standard Market lets you purchase goods without scanning items at a checkout or passing through a turnstile. Once you’ve arrived and checked in using an app, Standard Market tracks the items you pick up using a camera system, and it can tell when you return products (even in the wrong spot) or place them in a bag or your pockets. Once you leave, the company will process your payment, and send your receipt via email.

The San Francisco store will let Standard Cognition test how its tech scales, and trial some new features. The startup plans to expand opening times (it’s currently only open for a couple of hours per day) and the number of products over the next few weeks. It will also let more people shop in the store simultaneously.

Standard Cognition says it doesn’t collect customer’s biometric data or use facial recognition. It is providing its tech to other companies, and it will outfit thousands of stores in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

The research, compiled by Good Housekeeping, tested 10 of the biggest name supermarkets in the UK.

As well as Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Co-op, Waitrose, and M&S were price checked.

Seven burgers, one veggie burger, eight burger buns, seven sausages, one veggie sausage, eight hot dog rolls, 300g of coleslaw and a 300g potato salad made up the shopping list.

A 2l bottle of lemonade and a 2l bottle of cola, as well as BBQ sauce, mayonnaise and ketchup completed items included.

And Aldi was the cheapest by far, with the total shop coming in at £14.11 – less than half of the top priced supermarket Marks and Spencer, which came in at £26.89.

However, year on year, Aldi’s prices have nudged up and cost 9.1 per cent more than they did in the same test last year.

This trend was seen across the board, as the cheapest complete basket using different products from different stores was £1.37 more expensive than last year.

Not every supermarket has seen prices rise, with Waitrose’s basket costing 10 per cent less than last year, and Co-op costing a whopping 20 per cent less.

Caroline Bloor, Consumer Affairs Director at Good Housekeeping said: “Even with the good vibes that the heatwave brings, it’s disappointing to see a pretty significant rise in prices from the budget supermarkets on already squeezed consumers.

“Nonetheless, if consumers are willing to be a little bit savvy, there are still great BBQ deals to be found, so our advice is shop around for the best value and quality – and to enjoy the food and sunshine, of course!”

While MoviePass is apparently struggling to make it through the summer, their competitor Sinemia is unveiling a new batch of subscription plans so moviegoers can bring someone with them to the movies.

In case you haven’t heard, Sinemia is another movie ticket subscription service, but their plans are both a little more conservative and offer more freedom. Instead of going crazy and letting movie goers buy one movie ticket everyday, subscribers pay a flat fee for either one, two or three movie tickets each month. While the plans aren’t as plentiful, it’s still a solid discount off tickets, and there are no restrictions when it comes to 3D or IMAX screenings on a couple of the offerings.

Now, in an effort to expand their subscription offerings, Sinemia has unveiled a new “Sinemia for Two” set of plans. They cost double the price of the usual Sinemia subscriptions, but they give you two tickets. One ticket is for you, and the other is for whoever you want to bring to the movies with you. Sinemia for Two Subscriptions

Above, you can see the four different tiers of plans for the new Sinemia for Two subscription plans that were just announced. The two lower tiers don’t include options for 3D or IMAX movies, but the top two tiers do. On top of that, the subscriptions also allow advanced ticketing and seat selection, as well as the opportunity to pick any movie in nearly any theater on any date. You can also book tickets and select seats up to 30 days ahead of time.

Plus, all of the Sinemia subscriptions allow you to use your Sinemia app and debit card to purchase movie tickets on Fandango.com, MovieTickets.com and AtomTickets.com, something that is impossible through MoviePass.

The only downside is that all of these subscriptions are billed annually rather than month-to-month, so you’re going to pay a good chunk of money upfront to stay loyal to the service for at least a year.

Trump’s announcement disrupted stock trading on Wall Street, as fears of a trade war with China began to surface. Trump plans to make the amendments sometime next week. However, many people could not wait that long to voice their contempt for the motion.

Trump made the announcement at a White House press conference on Thursday.

“[We’re] going to build our steel industry back and we’re going to build our aluminum industry back,” he mentioned.

“If you’re able to get away with making almost $ 500 billion a year off of our country, how could I blame you?  Somebody agreed to these deals. And those people should be ashamed of themselves, what they’ve let happen.”

When asked how long he would maintain the tariff rates by reporters, Trump replied, “Unlimited period. Unlimited.”

“Twenty-five percent for steel. It will be 10 percent for aluminum. And it will be for a long period of time,” he stated.

The final tariff rates are slightly higher than previously thought. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross released a steel and aluminum 232 report last February, recommending three protectionists measures for implementation against several global producers.

The report advocated a “tariff of at least 7.7% on all aluminum exports from all countries, or a tariff of 23.6% on all products from China, Hong Kong, Russia, Venezuela and Vietnam.” However, Trump has since increased those rates to 10 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

“All the other countries would be subject to quotas equal to 100% of their 2017 exports to the United States, or a quota on all imports from all countries equal to a maximum of 86.7% of their 2017 exports to the United States,” the report continued.

The Department of Commerce said it implemented these measures in order to “raise production of aluminum from the present 48% average capacity to 80%, a level that would provide the [US] industry with long-term viability.”

However, a report from December 2017 mentions that the US is the world’s largest steel importer and it imports about a third of its steel, along with 90 percent of its aluminum. US imports from China were down five percent. Conversely, allied nations such as Canada, Mexico and Brazil were some of the highest exporters.

“Among top import sources for US steel, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico sent more than a third of their total steel exports to the United States in 2016. Flat products accounted for the largest share of steel exports to the United States in both Canada [58% or 3.1m metric tons] and Mexico [39% or 1.2m metric tons], respectively.”

The economist network Econofact argues that the loss of jobs in the US steel industry was not related to Chinese imports but increases in productivity and automation. This would mean that tariffs would not result in major job gains, while about 2 million jobs in industries that rely on steel might be adversely affected, the economists said.
