2017 marks that year in which cryptocurrencies finally penetrated mainstream consciousness. A victory lap for the cypherpunk culture that pioneered its foundational technologies and underlying philosophy over twenty years ago? Sort of, but not quite.

A schism took place in the perception of the technology itself, widening the gap between two of its primary attributes: blockchain vs. digital currency; function vs. asset; categorical stasis vs. disruptive innovation.

On the one hand, blockchain’s multi-industrial applications gained immediate recognition. Corporations and governments were eager to explore blockchain capabilities to enhance or innovate their current processes and operations.

On the other hand, cryptocurrencies became less of a technological embodiment of libertarian free-market ideals, instead of becoming a vehicle for reckless speculation. A few governments were willing to regulate cryptocurrency speculation and investment; even fewer embraced them.

The irony of this last point is that government oversight and regulation–which the mainstream public seemed to be clamoring for–are exactly the things that the early cypherpunks were fervently working to oppose.

But let’s get back to the topic of crypto speculation. The appropriation or “hijacking” of any product, service, or “brand” is not an uncommon phenomenon; in fact, it happens all of the time, to the extent that it may even constitute a natural part of the product cycle.

But in the case of cryptos, its capacity as a “gaming” object (a wager; gamble) has diverted attention away from its original goal to establish a legitimate alternative currency system; one that is not subject to central bank manipulation or control.

The exception to this appropriation is, of course, the HODLers, another word for the long-term devotees (“holders) whose investments stem from a more idealistic view of cryptocurrency’s future monetary potential.

So, what’s next with cryptocurrency? What might its next iteration–its next evolutionary step–look like?

Here’s the real question: what do cryptocurrencies need to transform from an object of speculation to a formidable challenge to “monopolized money”?

Okay, let’s get down to the crux of the matter. There are many characteristics that collectively “define” money (e.g., a unit of account, store of value, etc.). Fine. All are valid.

But ultimately, what matters most is that money maintains a stable level of “purchasing power.” Money is synonymous with purchasing power. Without purchasing power, money is useless.

Cryptocurrencies need a more widely accepted form of purchasing power.

Sure, cryptocurrencies (or rather, “blockchain”) may serve well as a unit of account, and perhaps a store of value depending on the outcome of a given altcoin. Cryptos are storable, transportable, and divisible.

Cryptos also provide heightened privacy and security, inflationary protection, decentralization, and independence from central bank intervention; all of these attributes positive; all more promising than the fiat system. Yet, cryptocurrencies don’t have the same level of purchasing power as cash. And that’s an issue.

So to answer the question–what might be the next evolution in the crypto space?–the answer is obvious if you compare the obvious need against the glaring absence: purchasing power.

In other words…

Cryptocurrencies backed by real assets–ideally gold and silver, but also industrial commodities, perhaps even “services”–may constitute the final iteration of an asset class whose potential to challenge and overtake fiat currency is almost 100% complete.

Fragile commodity: Woman arrested for trying to sell underage girl’s virginity (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/fragile-commodity-woman-arrested-for-trying-to-sell-underage-girls-virginity-video/ https://briefnews.eu/fragile-commodity-woman-arrested-for-trying-to-sell-underage-girls-virginity-video/#respond Fri, 21 Dec 2018 19:06:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fragile-commodity-woman-arrested-for-trying-to-sell-underage-girls-virginity-video/

A venturous lady from Saint Petersburg attempted to cash in on the virginity of a 15-year-old girl she met online. She managed to find a generous buyer in Moscow for the unusual article…but he turned out to be an undercover cop.

A hotel room with a large bed, white sheets and dimmed lighting was rented for the night. The rich client was also there and the final details were being agreed.

The female pimp asked the man not to hold back the girl for too long after the deal is done because she had “strict parents” and had to be home in time.

And then the moment she was so eagerly waiting for had arrived. He passed her the cash. The whole 650,000 rubles (almost $ 9,700) she demanded for the teen’s maidenhood.

The woman’s face brightened when she felt the sweet banknotes in her hands as seen in the footage from the hidden camera, carried by the police officer, who posed as a client.

But her joy was cut short as she was detained on the spot. Being caught red-handed, the shocked perpetrator had nothing to do, but confess.

The 22-year-old told the operatives that she found the girl on social media and persuaded her to part with her virginity by promising her easy money.

She then traveled to from Saint Petersburg to Moscow and arranged everything for the transaction to take place there.

However, the woman insisted that she never planned to keep the cash for herself and only wanted to help the girl find a good man.

But police believe otherwise, saying that she apparently planned to flee after getting the money and already purchases a ticket out of Moscow.

The wannabe female pimp had been put in custody and now faces criminal charges over involving an underage person in prostitution.

World running out of sand, making it the black market’s hot commodity https://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/ https://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 06:52:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/ A global shortage of sand is prompting black-market gangs to steal large amounts from rivers and beaches. Scientists are warning that the global supply of sand is slipping through our fingers.

Statistics show that worldwide, we go through 50 billion tons of sand every year – twice the amount produced by every river in the world during the same period.

According to writer and journalist Vince Beiser, who wrote a book on the subject, “Sand is the essential ingredient that makes modern life possible. And we are starting to run out.”

That’s mainly because the number and size of cities is exploding, especially in the developing world, Beiser told Business Insider.

“Every year there are more people on the planet, and every year more of them move to cities. Since 1950, the world’s urban population has ballooned to over 3.9 billion from 746 million,” he said.

The demand for construction aggregates will rise by 5.2 percent annually to 51.7 billion tons in 2019, according to researcher Freedonia Group. Some estimate that sand’s share of the aggregate business is already worth $ 70 billion in annual sales.

Up to 90 percent of the world’s beaches have shrunk by an average of 40 meters since 2008. Popular shores have replenished their dying beaches with even more sand, imported from elsewhere. Up to 70 percent of Southern California’s beaches could be completely eroded by 2100.

China has used more sand in recent years than the United States did throughout the 20th century. In India, sand has become such a hot commodity that it has been taken over by organized crime, which illegally mines and sells it on the black market. The Sand Mafia, India’s strongest criminal organization, employs 75,000 people to dive for sand in rivers. Divers work 12-hour days, diving up to 200 times and making only $ 15 per boatload.

The UN Environmental Program has already suggested better pricing and taxing on sand mining. They also recommended an immediate need to create regulations in all countries, as well as in international waters.

“We’re on track to be a planet of at least nine billion people in the next 20 years. Most of them are going to want to consume resources the way we do in the Western world, and that is just physically impossible,” said Beiser.

China’s financial markets regulator, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), has announced plans to accelerate opening of the country’s futures market, according to an article published in the China Securities Journal on Thursday.

“The CSRC will push forward with plans to launch crude futures trading, and will work actively to introduce overseas investors into certain commodities markets in China, such as iron ore trading, CSRC’s futures supervision department,” said Reuters, referencing the article.

The CSRC says that it will work actively to introduce overseas investors into certain commodities markets in China, including for iron ore, in an attempt to deepen the nation’s capital markets.

As part of the plan, the CSRC said that it was also pushing forward with the introduction of crude oil futures, creating a rival contract to those traded in Chicago, New York and London.

It also announced that it would encourage Chinese futures exchanges to expand overseas, either through the establishment of offshore outlets or through acquisitions.

Chinese commodity futures have exploded in popularity in recent years, benefiting from tight capital controls and a lack of alternative investment opportunities in other asset classes.

The lift in trading volumes has also led to an influx of speculators, including inexperienced investors, resulting in wild intra-session swings in many commodities contacts.

Reuters has more here.

STEEL ran in Zhang Cheng’s family for three generations. His grandfather mined iron ore. His father got a job in the big state-owned steel mill just outside Jinan, capital of Shandong province. His mother worked in the on-site hospital. And Mr Zhang went to the mill-run school, graduating to a job in its foundry, where, in the heat of the blast furnace, he rolled metal into thin bars for construction. But after nearly two decades in Jinan Steel, he worked his last day there this summer. In the name of “capacity reduction”—a government policy to rein in excess production of steel—the plant stopped operating in July, and Mr Zhang went on the dole.

Since they worked for a state-owned company, the local government has helped him and the 20,000 others who lost jobs find new ones. But it has been a struggle for Mr Zhang, a soft-spoken man. Openings in Jinan are mainly in the service industry—as a waiter in restaurants or an attendant at a station on the new underground. He worries that he…

Commodity prices continue to rally and analysts are scrambling to upgrade their forecasts.

Macquarie Bank did just that earlier this week, making significant upward revisions to its iron ore and coal forecasts for the years ahead.

And now HSBC has followed suit, noting that China’s demand for commodities continues to surprise to the upside.

Here’s its view:

China’s supply reform program and fiscal stimulus remain important drivers for commodity prices. While the market had been concerned about a property slowdown and tighter liquidity in 2Q17, the price correction was overdone. Markets have since recovered strongly and this renewed strength has been confirmed in recent ground trips and management discussions. With underlying demand expected to remain stable for 2H17, this, together with better supply discipline, should see prices being well supported. With increasing evidence that China will remain committed to its supply reform program over the next 1-2 years, those commodities that are largely produced in China such as steel, coal and aluminum should benefit. Hitherto, policy implementation has been very strict and the frequent environmental and safety inspections have kept shut capacity closed, despite the temptation to restart due to higher margins. In the near term, the winter shutdowns in Hebei and Shaodong provinces will likely cause further disruptions in steel and aluminum production.

And here are HSBC’s revised price forecasts.

HSBC commodity price upgradesHSBC

The largest upgrades are for iron ore, steel and copper, with smaller tweaks coming for aluminum, nickel and coking and thermal coal.

Despite some significant near-term price upgrades, HSBC has left its long-term forecasts unchanged at this stage.

“We have sided with prudence and conservatism, opting to be cautious on near-term pricing despite the highly elevated spot prices,” it says.

China’s dominance in the global commodity markets, in one chart https://briefnews.eu/chinas-dominance-in-the-global-commodity-markets-in-one-chart/ https://briefnews.eu/chinas-dominance-in-the-global-commodity-markets-in-one-chart/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 07:49:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinas-dominance-in-the-global-commodity-markets-in-one-chart/ If you needed any further evidence of how important China is when it comes to the outlook for global commodity prices, this chart surely seals the deal:

China share of global commodity demandMorgan Stanley

From Morgan Stanley, it shows China’s share of total global demand for a variety of major commodities, both now and where it’s projected to sit in the future.

Dominant is probably the most appropriate word to use, with the nation accounting for over 50% of total iron ore, alumina, nickel, thermal coal and thermal coal demand, and over 40% for zinc, copper, lead, zinc, steel and coking coal.

With statistics like that, what happens in the Chinese economy will be felt by commodity producing nations and miners around the world.

Helima Croft, a managing director and the global head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, discusses how Venezuela could possibly “implode,” and what that will mean for the oil market, After all, the country has the world’s largest proven reserve, and makes up 10% of US oil imports. Croft thinks that situation will impact geopolitics and the macroeconomic environment to a much greater extent than it has in recent months. She also acknowledges that markets have largely brushed off recent developments in the Middle East.

Massive data sets are not a commodity for AI https://briefnews.eu/massive-data-sets-are-not-a-commodity-for-ai/ https://briefnews.eu/massive-data-sets-are-not-a-commodity-for-ai/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 06:06:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/massive-data-sets-are-not-a-commodity-for-ai/

Those of you who follow advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have probably heard data called the new currency or the crown jewels. At the same time, a contingency of people believe data is a commodity. But it can’t be both a highly prized proprietary possession and an interchangeable good.

So which is it?

Commodities 101

With college economics far behind many of us, here’s a quick refresher on what makes a commodity a commodity.

  • It’s fungible. The quality of a given commodity may vary slightly, but it’s essentially consistent across producers. Consider gold: The purity may differ across samples — 9 karats vs. 24 karats, for instance — but gold is gold.
  • The market dictates the price, and it’s traded openly. The intersection of supply and demand serves as the pricing determinant of commodities. You can trade everything from pork futures to oil and precious metals on open markets like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
  • A commodity usually generates low margins. With no major differentiation from one product to the next, there’s minimal wiggle room and strong competition.
  • It has common standards, which makes it easy to exchange for goods of the same type.
  • A commodity is (usually) an input into another finished good. Oil on its own is essentially worthless; its value lies as an energy source to fuel other products.

Is data a commodity?

Spoiler alert: It’s not.

Data — that is accurate, precise training data that teaches models to discover predictive relationships — does offer the keys to the kingdom. Yet, it is a far cry from a commodity, and here’s why.

First, training data is not fungible. Consider the datasets we need to build autonomous navigation systems. A stoplight is a stoplight, so for a car to recognize one, you may think all you need is a series of positive and negative images to train a classifier. It might as well be the Not Hotdog app from HBO’s Silicon Valley. Except it’s not that simple. Stoplights don’t look the same in every country. Not to mention, how was the data captured? What type of camera did the car use? Where was it mounted? What’s the angle of the image? What’s the angle of capture, and is it (partially) obstructed? Was it a sunny day or a rainy night? Something as seemingly straightforward as labeling a stoplight is actually quite complex.

Second, is the market the sole determinant of price, and is it openly traded? There is no open market for training data. I suspect there never will be because many organizations closely guard data as premium among their intellectual property. Let’s stick with our autonomous driving example. Companies in this industry are in a race to get to Level 4 autonomy first, where cars drive on their own. It’s not likely the automakers will share their proprietary data in the midst of competition this fierce. Nor will banks, insurance providers, e-commerce merchants, advertisers, or, given the choice, many of us.

Third, we should consider the low margins. Is the differentiation between the methodologies of generating training data minimal? That’s debatable, and it’s hard to say if anyone really knows. We haven’t yet seen controlled experiments to determine if one method is truly better than another. As someone who works with dozens of leading AI practitioners around the world, I can tell you that AI teams will pay more for accurate and consistent training data to help scale their models. There’s plenty of traditional crowd-sourcing and outsourcing tools that offer more commoditized human knowledge as an API, but in that case, you’re getting what you pay for: lots of messy, imprecise data.

Fourth, there are no common standards. Let’s take autonomous vehicles again. A few regulations exist within regional and national governments, but they’re weak and inconsistent. In the U.S., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released guidance for vehicle performance for manufacturers and suppliers building autonomous vehicles, but it’s not a set of enforceable laws. The International Organization for Standardization issued the ISO 26262 standard in 2011, but it provides dated guidance with no enforcement teeth. And states have tremendous authority in creating laws and regulations that apply to traffic locally. I think we’re a long ways off from seeing any common standards in the U.S., let alone globally, for autonomous driving data.

And finally, is training data an input into a finished product? We can affirmatively check this box. It’s probably the most important input into an AI model, hence why so many people — myself included — liken it to the crown jewels.

If you think training data is a commodity, you’re in for a surprise. Companies are at vastly different stages of maturity in building AI applications. And it’s not enough to have petabytes of raw data; you need it labeled consistently to provide reliable precision and recall. Only then does it become the catalyst that differentiates and accelerates your AI. This makes applying AI harder in the short-term but more interesting and valuable in the long-term.

Oh, and it also means that us pesky carbon life forms are likely to provide crucial crown jewels for silicon to simulate and enhance our cognition for a long, long time to come.

Matt Bencke is the founder and CEO of Mighty AI, a startup that helps train artificial intelligence models.
