After a year of workshopping, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy unveiled the GOP's 2023 "Commitment to America" platform — featuring stock footage of Ukraine and Russia used to demonstrate the beauty of the United States and a fake Abraham Lincoln quote used in a letter to members of Congress.
In a promotional video released yesterday titled "The Preamble to the Commitment to America," a narrator exhalts America's exceptionalism, blames Democrats for leading the country "off track," and announces the 2023 party platform priorities: an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom, and a government that's accountable.
The intentionally vague platform seeks to unite the GOP ahead of a tense election season marked by internal conflict and anticipated rifts between moderate Republicans and election-denying allies of Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.
Several clips in the video meant to portray the diversity and "vibrancy" of America — including scenes of a woman shopping in a supermarket, a child running through a field, and a farmer carrying a bag of wheat — were actually stock footage filmed in Russia and Ukraine, HuffPost first reported.
Several images were created by Serg Grbanoff, a filmmaker based in Russia, HuffPost reported, who confirmed to the outlet the images were created in the Volgograd region of his home country. Another image was created by a Shutterstock contributor, DedovStock, who posts shots he takes in Ukraine.
"Interesting how you guys aren't remotely interested on the issues facing the American people in the video," McCarthy spokesman Mark Bednar told HuffPost when asked about the stock footage.
The stock footage wasn't the only issue to arise with the rollout of the platform. In a letter to House members announcing its priorities — tweeted by Politico reporter Olivia Beavers — McCarthy signs his name to letterhead featuring a quote falsely attributed to Lincoln.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the letter reads, attributing the quote to the nation's 16th president.
Christian McWhirter, a historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, told The Daily Beast he could find "no reliable evidence" that Lincoln ever uttered those words.
"They do not appear in his writings and I cannot find them recollected by any of his contemporaries," McWhirter told The Daily Beast.
The phrase, attributed online to Lincoln, Shearson Lehman, and anonymous sources depending on the reference point, was printed in a 1986 full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal paid for by investment banking firm Lehman Brothers to thank its long-term employees.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the ad reads, The Daily Beast reported. "It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year."

A Filipino couple has proven that nothing stands in the way of true love or can stop your wedding…even if you have to make you way to the altar knee-deep in murky waters.
The potential to get wet during their wedding ceremony did not scare off Jefferson and Jobel de los Angeles. The couple exchanged their vows on Saturday despite rather extreme conditions – the Santo Rosario Church in Hagonoy, Bulacan, was flooded after heavy rains and storms hit the area.
The video initially posted by the bride’s aunt, Tere Bañarez Bautista, showed the beaming woman in white dress marching down the aisle accompanied by her parents. Her groom was bravely waiting for his beloved one there. Dressed up but barefoot guests and relatives are also seen all smiles on the photos.
The couple had yet another reason not to postpone the celebration as one of their two children was baptized the same day in the same church.
Southwest monsoon enhanced by nearby tropical storm ‘Yagi’ has recently caused heavy rains that resulted in flooding across the Philippines.

“The US has become more and more unreliable for us,” Sebastian Kurz told the Financial Times. “The most important thing is that Europe has to remain united.”
Concerns about Donald Trump’s administration have been growing across the EU recently. Earlier this month, a poll showed that 82 percent of Germans believe the US is not a reliable political partner after Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Europe “needs to take its fate into its own hands.”
The major transatlantic rift first emerged after Trump pulled out of the Paris climate agreement, and it only deepened after the US administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, pulled out of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel, which are due to come into force in June.
Kurz and Merkel are not the only EU politicians to question Washington’s commitment to its European partners. Earlier this month, European Council President Donald Tusk also questioned the American friendship. The US President “made us realize that if you need a helping hand, you all find one at the end of your arm,” Tusk said in Bulgaria at a Western Balkans summit earlier this month.
“Looking at the latest decisions of President Trump, someone could even think: with friends like that, who needs enemies?” he said. “But frankly speaking, Europe should be grateful for President Trump because thanks to him we have got rid of all illusions,” Tusk added, urging the Europeans to unite, against Washington’s “capricious assertiveness.”
Kurtz expanded his message to the European nations, calling on other EU capitals to mend ties with Moscow. “We won’t be able to solve the crisis in Ukraine alone… Syria, we will only be successful if we find a way to act united with the US and Russia, so I think it’s not negative for the EU if countries like Austria — which has always been a bridge-builder — has… a good relationship with Russia,” Kurtz noted.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Kurz also noted that some Western European nations are guilty of treating their Eastern brethren with contempt. He noted that current tensions in the EU are partly caused by the behavior where “some countries think that they act in a more moral and better way than others, that western European countries sometimes look down on eastern European countries.”

There can be little question that new NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine wants humans to return to the Moon and to open Earth’s celestial neighbor to commercial activity. Just check the lunar background of his new Twitter account or some of his writings on the subject. Soon, however, his commitment to the Moon will be tested.
On Thursday—just his third full day on the job—a group of lunar scientists, engineers, and mission planners sent Bridenstine a letter to complain about the cancellation of the Resource Prospector program. This mission would send a rover to the polar region of the Moon to look for, and study, ice deposits that scientists hypothesize are there. Advocates of lunar exploration say this source of water could provide propellant for exploration missions deeper into the Solar System.
In recent years, the existence of this water has become a key reason that NASA (and other national space agencies) have begun to formulate plans for the development of lunar resources. Indeed, when President Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1 last December, he redirected NASA back toward the Moon, including for the purposes of “long-term exploration and utilization” of that sphere.

You’ve been dating for what feels like forever, but still, your partner just won’t commit. In fact, when you even mention things like labels, exclusivity, or taking the next step, they practically tune you out or run. You might be hoping for an engagement or just wanting to be Instagram official, but either way, they’re not into it. Will your partner ever be ready to commit?
It’s frustrating to be in relationship limbo, especially because sometimes, even your partner doesn’t know why they’re so afraid to take the leap of faith. Luckily, there are some pretty clear red flags that prove your significant other might never be ready to move forward and it’s probably time for you to move on.

A person whose attachment style is avoidant may be sabotaging your relationship or setting you both up for failure without even knowing it.
Usually, this kind of defense mechanism comes from a childhood trauma of abandonment and it means that relationships are unpredictable and temporary. An avoidant partner won’t be able to commit in the long run because they simply can’t maintain relationships for that long.
“This is an unconscious attempt to make sure that they never again go through anything like they went through with their original caregiver,” psychotherapist Alison Abrams told Business Insider. “The irony is that by engaging in these defenses that we’ve learned we are actually recreating the very thing we were trying to avoid.”

In relationships, it’s important that both parties are able to be genuinely, truly themselves. This could mean small things as silly as being able to hang out without makeup on or bigger things like being able to express your religious views and future plans or ambitions. After all, how could someone commit to a person that they inevitably want to modify, suppress, or control?
According to YouTube relationship expert Tracy Malone, a partner expressing their desire to change you is a sign that the person you’re with just isn’t right for you and that they’re not seeking to commit, or at least to commit to you as your very best self.
“If that happens, run,” Malone told INSIDER. “That is a sign of a controlling person and he/she will never treat you properly.”

Conversations help couples establish connections and get to know each other in lasting ways. This could mean deep talks about the meaning of life or chatting briefly about your favorite foods. Either way, these things help you and your partner to not only get to know each other, but to establish a bond that lasts beyond the duration of a conversation.
“If the person that you are dating nearly always monopolizes the conversation, does not ask you about yourself or your day, and then tunes you out when you start speaking, these are clear signals that your date is not really very interested in you as a person except as an audience for them,” psychologist and author Elinor Greenberg told INSIDER. “If they are not interested now at the beginning of the relationship, they are likely to be even less interested later on.”

LONDON — All four high powered MPs responsible for working towards a fairer Britain have quit over claims the Government is failing to create a more equal society.
Alan Milburn, the former Labour minister who heads up Theresa May’s Social Mobility Commission, said he had “little hope” the current Government was capable of making the changes necessary to make the UK a fairer place to leave for the poorest in society.
He was joined in walking out by his three fellow commissioners, including the Conservative former cabinet minister Baroness Shephard.
The resignations are a fresh blow for Mrs May who entered No 10 promising to tackle the “burning injustices” that hold back poorer people.
However a Government spokesman said the departures came after Mr Milburn – whose term as commission chair expired last July – was told that a new chair was to be appointed and that an open application process would be held for the role.
In his resignation letter, Mr Milburn said the preoccupation with Brexit meant the Government “does not have the necessary bandwidth to ensure the rhetoric of healing social division is matched with the reality”.
He added: “I have little hope of the current Government making the progress I believe is necessary to bring about a fairer Britain.
“It seems unable to commit to the future of the commission as an independent body or to give due priority to the social mobility challenge facing our nation.”
The resignations come just days after the commission warned that unless the economic, social and local divisions laid bare by the Brexit vote were addressed there would be a rise in far right or hard left extremism.
In its report the commission said London and its commuter belt resembled a “different country” to coastal, rural and former industrial areas where young people faced lower pay, fewer top jobs and commuting times nearly four times those in cities.
Mr Milburn told The Observer: “The worst position in politics is to set out a proposition that you’re going to heal social divisions and then do nothing about it. It’s almost better never to say you’ll do anything about it.
“It’s disappointing at least that the Government hasn’t got its shoulder to the wheel in the way it should to deal with these structural issues that lead to social division and political alienation in the country.
“In America for 30 years real average earnings have remained flat. Now here the Chancellor is predicting that will last for 20 years.
“That has a consequence for people, but a political consequence as well. It means more anger, more resentment and creates a breeding ground for populism.”
For Labour, shadow cabinet office minister Jon Trickett said the resignations came as “no surprise”.
“As inequality has grown under the Tories, social mobility has totally stalled. Theresa May has rewarded the rich whilst holding everyone else back,” he said.
“It is no surprise the whole Social Mobility Commission has resigned in frustration. Under the Tories, how well people do in life is still based on class background rather than on talent or effort.”
A Government spokesman said it is “committed to fighting injustice and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to go as far as their talents will take them”.
“We are making good progress with social mobility – we have increased the national living wage, cut income tax for the lowest paid and doubled free childcare,” the spokesman said.
“We accept there is more to do and that is why we are focusing our efforts in disadvantaged areas where we can make the biggest difference.”

Amazon announced on Monday that it has acquired the global TV rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s celebrated The Lord of the Rings fantasy novels, with a multi-season commitment that includes the potential for an additional spin-off series.
“I had boyfriends in middle school, but that usually consists of only seeing each other at school and having your parents drive you around to places,” she said. “It was never anything serious of course.”

The New England Patriots reportedly agreed to trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft pick on Monday.
In doing so, the Patriots made a resounding commitment to Tom Brady — he is the quarterback now and for the future.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted, the trade signal a huge belief that Brady, at 40, can play into his mid-40s, as he’s stated he wants to do.
Not every team would be so confident. Brady hasn’t shown signs of slowing down this season, but the Patriots know that day will come eventually. At his age, an injury could affect his game or he could decline quickly, as Peyton Manning did in his final year (though Brady doesn’t have Manning’s injury history).
Furthermore, reports indicated that the Patriots viewed Garoppolo as the quarterback of the future. Turning 26 in November, Garoppolo showed signs of being a future starting quarterback in the two games he started during Brady’s suspension in 2016. When Brady does eventually retire, handing the reins to Garoppolo would have been an optimal scenario for the Patriots.
But figuring out the timelines of Brady and Garoppolo would have been tricky. Garoppolo is a free agent after this season and likely wouldn’t have had much interest in backing up Brady for many more seasons. The Patriots, likewise, might not have had much interest in paying a big salary to Garoppolo to be a backup, and they wouldn’t push Brady out the door to make room for Garoppolo.
Nonetheless, the Patriots held onto Garoppolo during the draft when teams called about him. They could have possibly gotten creative with Garoppolo’s next contract or found some way to appeal to him to stay patient until he could take over the team when Brady declines.
Instead, the Patriots got an offer they liked for Garoppolo and pounced. Earlier this season, they traded third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts. That leaves them in search for a backup for Brady now, and they will likely do their homework in seeking out future replacements for Brady.
In the meantime, Brady is both the present and the future for the Patriots. It’s unknown how he’ll hold up as he ventures into his 40s, but the Patriots, based on what they’ve seen, must believe he can continue to dominate.

I’m a bit of an expert on the subject, having spent spent six summers mastering sunscreen—that most necessary of hot-weather evils—as a camp counselor. While some of my teenage pals scooped ice cream, sat in lifeguard chairs, and lugged around other people’s golf clubs, I spent my days shepherding a group of 15 third-grade girls around 100 acres of land in northern Illinois.
But our experiences are becoming increasingly rare. As my colleague Derek Thompson reported earlier this month, fewer and fewer teens are working paid summer jobs—the days of simultaneously earning a tan and minimum wage are being traded for hours spent studying and working unpaid internships. The explanation for why, as Derek notes, is multifold, ranging from an increasing drive to prep for the academic year during the summer to a decline in the “cool” factor associated with working a short-term gig.
