Foreign leaders and their spouses attending Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in London on September 19 have been advised to fly to the UK on commercial flights and are banned from using helicopters, according to documents obtained by Politico.

The documents from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office were sent from the UK to embassies, the outlet reported. The FCDO anticipates the funeral service will be at capacity, so no more than one representative per country and their spouse will be invited to attend. 

The department said it "regrets that, because of limited space at the state funeral service and associated events, no other members of the principal guest's family, staff or entourage may be admitted."

The FCDO advised funeral attendees to fly commercial "where possible" because London Heathrow airport will not have private flight arrangements or aircraft parking, despite the airport normally accommodating private jets. The department also banned helicopter transfers between airports because of the volume of flights.

World leaders were also told they will be bussed in groups to the funeral at Westminster Abbey and cannot use their own state cars to attend the service, Politico reported.

One unnamed foreign ambassador sent a message to Politico reporters on WhatsApp on Sunday, saying: "Can you imagine Joe Biden on the bus?"

Preparing for an event like this also comes with security concerns. Next weekend's premier league soccer games might be postponed due to a lack of police resources that may be diverted to the funeral, according to iNews.

Politico reported that an FCDO document detailing logistics for those traveling to the service from abroad says "multiple and comprehensive layers of security will be in place across London and at all the official venues used for the state funeral and associated events."

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at 96 years old, ending an era for the UK. Her son, now King Charles III, attended his accession ceremony on Saturday.

The Queen's coffin is currently being transported from Balmoral, Scotland, where she died, to London. Along the way, the hearse will make multiple stops in Scotland, before reaching the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is the official residence of the monarch in Scotland, the BBC reported.

After the monarch's funeral, the Queen will reach her final resting place in Windsor Castle next to her late husband, Prince Philip who died in April 2021 at age 99.

Yoshihide Suga, chief cabinet secretary, assured the public that commercial whaling “will be limited to Japan’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.” He said the country’s ships will not hunt in the Antarctic or in the southern hemisphere, which was the main source of concern for Australia.

The announcement was not surprising, as it comes after the IWC declined Japan’s request to allow its fishermen to hunt minke and other whales protected by the organization. But environmentalists accused Tokyo of using a “sneaky” timing to avoid condemnation.

“It’s clear that the government is trying to sneak in this announcement at the end of year, away from the spotlight of international media, but the world sees this for what it is,” Greenpeace Japan said in a statement.

It warned that high-end technology led to overfishing in Japanese waters and high seas, resulting in “the depletion of many whale species.” Most whale populations have not yet recovered, the NGO said, adding that the list includes “larger whales such as blue whales, fin whales and sei whales.”

From a technological point of view, modern-day whaling involves using explosive harpoons. The projectile is typically launched from cannon, penetrating the whale’s hide and exploding. Whalers usually target the head of a whale, inflicting heavy brain damage and knocking the giant mammal out, or instantly killing it.

In past years, hundreds of whales were killed in what Japanese officials called “research” or “scientific” efforts. Nevertheless, so-called scientific research hunts were exceptionally allowed under a controversial clause in the Antarctic Treaty.

Japan is not the first country to resume commercial whaling, as it joins Iceland and Norway in openly defying the IWC’s 1986 ban. Earlier in April, Icelandic fishermen set a target of 191 kills for the season, drawing international criticism.

Whaling is a thorny issue in Japanese society, where the tradition of hunting marine mammals has existed for centuries. Whale meat was vital in post-WWII Japan but its consumption dropped significantly as the country became wealthier during the following decades.

However, Japan’s conservative government argues that there is a need to pass whaling culture on to the next generation. Many members of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party do support whaling, and he himself comes from a constituency where whale hunting remains popular.

NASA announced Thursday that it has partnered with nine companies to enable the delivery of small scientific payloads to the lunar surface. No money was exchanged up front, but the space agency said these companies would now be eligible to “bid” for contracts to deliver select experiments to the Moon.

The space agency made the lunar announcement with considerable fanfare, devoting an hour-long ceremony to questions from children, an astronaut in Houston bouncing on a wire to simulate lunar gravity, and other activities.

Beneath the pomp and circumstance, however, two factors stood out. One is that the science arm of NASA, the Science Mission Directorate, is getting more involved in funding lunar science experiments through this program. “The Moon is full of secrets that we don’t know yet,” Thomas Zurbuchen, who oversees scientific activities for NASA, said Thursday. And secondly, the government is taking a concrete step toward funding commercial activities on the Moon.

Up in the remote northeast of Scotland, residents of the Orkney Islands use small island-hopping aircraft to commute around the archipelago. The longest flight in the area is 15 minutes, traveling 33 miles from the city of Kirkwall to the island of North Ronaldsay. The shortest flight takes an average of 80 seconds to travel 1.7 miles between the islands of Westray and Papa Westray. That flight holds the Guinness World Record as the shortest commercial flight route in the world.

Now, Scottish airline Loganair and aircraft modifier Cranfield Aerospace Solutions are working together in the hopes of turning the Orkney Islands’ 10 inter-island routes all-electric, perhaps even establishing the world’s first all-electric commercial flight routes.

Electric planes are still something of a pipe-dream for environmentalists and technologists. Jet fuel is extremely energy-dense compared to batteries, and flight requires a lot of energy at little additional weight. Electric flight startups are either developing hybrid battery/jet-fuel planes or banking on the continuous improvement of batteries to make their visions viable years down the road. While the most optimistic see the advent of lithium-air batteries and engine efficiency improvement as a path to commercial electric flight, others have focused on decarbonizing jet-fuel synthesis.

Virgin Atlantic is about conduct a real-world test of its greener jet fuel. The airline plans to use LanzaTech’s sustainable fuel for the first time in a commercial flight this October, with a Boeing 747 relying on the low-carbon liquid for a trip from Orlando to London’s Gatwick airport. The journey will both “raise awareness” for the more environmentally friendly technology and show that it’s viable for more than just experimental flights.

As before, LanzaTech’s particular approach to jet fuel helps the planet both through its composition and how it’s obtained. The company captures waste gas from steel mills and converts it into an ethanol that puts up to 65 percent less carbon into the atmosphere. It’s not only reducing the immediate impact of the fuel, it’s cutting pollution at the mills.

You’ll have to be patient if you want to see airlines adopting this on a wide basis. While the fuel should be “competitive” with conventional options, there’s still some work to be done before it’s useful for airlines around the globe — and even then, it’s only estimated to produce “nearly one fifth” of aviation fuel used in a given year. Nonetheless, it could be important for reducing the impact of airliners until electric aircraft are good enough to start replacing existing fleets.
