‘Black Panther’ Arrives on Digital and Blu-ray in May, With Director’s Commentary and More https://briefnews.eu/black-panther-arrives-on-digital-and-blu-ray-in-may-with-directors-commentary-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/black-panther-arrives-on-digital-and-blu-ray-in-may-with-directors-commentary-and-more/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 17:07:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-panther-arrives-on-digital-and-blu-ray-in-may-with-directors-commentary-and-more/ Black Panther Blu-ray

Black Panther, Marvel’s mega-hit, will be leaping onto Blu-ray and digital a lot sooner than expected – next month. The Black Panther Blu-ray release will come loaded with special features, including deleted scenes and a Ryan Coogler director’s commentary.

Have you heard of this small indie movie Black Panther? It’s coming to Blu-ray, very soon! Marvel’s latest arrives on digital May 8, 2018 and on Blu-ray May 15, 2018. This might seem a bit sooner than expected, especially since the film is still burning up the box office (it just sailed past Titanic to become the third highest-grossing release in domestic box office history) – but no one is going to complain about taking the film home sooner rather than later.

There’s also an exclusive sneak peak at Ant-Man and the Wasp, which I’m sure someone, somewhere, is excited about. Maybe.

Path Out uses real-life commentary to tell a tale of escaping Syria https://briefnews.eu/path-out-uses-real-life-commentary-to-tell-a-tale-of-escaping-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/path-out-uses-real-life-commentary-to-tell-a-tale-of-escaping-syria/#respond Wed, 08 Nov 2017 03:08:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/path-out-uses-real-life-commentary-to-tell-a-tale-of-escaping-syria/

Path Out is an autobiographical role-playing game that goes beyond just telling a story through dialogue and quests. You play as a cartoon version of Abdullah Karam, a Syrian refugee who now resides in Austria. As you help him escape the civil war in his homeland, videos from present-day Karam pop up in the corner, and he talks to you about what was going through his head during certain events. Karam worked with indie studio Causa Creations to develop the title, and it’s available for free on Steam and Itch.io.

Karam is 21 and from Hama, Syria. He says that he’s always loved games, and that it was the perfect medium to tell his story.

“Just like any other person I have dreams and goals and I always dreamt of being involved in the video games industry, which was not an option while I lived in Syria,” said Karam in an email to GamesBeat. “When I came to Austria I met my current mentor Brian Main and Causa Creations’ founder Georg Hobmeier. Georg had experience with these kind of games and so we decided to give it a try and make my journey into an adventure game.”

Hobmeier cofounded Causa in 2014, and since then, it’s made a wide variety of games. In addition to sci-fi choose-your-own-adventure titles like The Station, it’s interested in games that examine political and social justice issues. It’s explored social and environmental topics such as the ramifications of electronic waste in Burn the Boards. It collaborated with studio Gold Extra on titles like Frontiers and From Darkness, which told the stories of folks like urban refugees and NGO workers.

“Causa Creations was always focused on a particular niche of documentary games and interactive applications that address issues that were pretty much ignored by mainstream gaming,” said Hobmeier. He added, “When I met Abdullah, he was very enthusiastic and interested into working with us. By making a project together, I hoped that we could involve him even more and give him the opportunity to tell his story. Also, I thought it would be an interesting angle to approach the refugee crisis with a fresh aesthetic and a playful approach, and let him speak as a gamer to his fellows.”

Causa developed Path Out in collaboration with Karam and Main, who created the art, along with the music and game development studio Wobblersound. It takes place during the Syrian Civil War, which started in 2011. A young Karam is about to turn 18, which means that he’ll be conscripted in the army. His parents decide that the safest course of action is for him to flee the country and join his brother in Turkey. It’s an intensely personal perspective on a crisis that’s left 13.5 million people in need of humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Karam talks about these issues, narrating what it’s like to see your hometown devastated by attacks and fighting. But it’s not all serious. Occasionally, he’ll sarcastically comment on details in the game. When the character exits his home, Karam pops up and says, “Come on, honestly? That’s a very kitschy version of a Syrian courtyard.” He adds, “My home was a little more modern than this. But, sure, enjoy the clichés!”

“I really wanted to walk a fine line between portraying my experience, but being as engaging as normal, well-made games,” said Karam. “The jokes and the humor were important because they reflect the Syrian humor we’ve developed over decades to escape the dire reality of life and cope with the hardships we face.”

The video commentary came from an idea that Hobmeier and Karam were discussing for marketing the game. They originally thought about showing the game to refugees and creating Let’s Play-style videos to show their reactions. But Hobmeier took that a step further and suggested incorporating Karam’s commentary in the game.

Though the feature might sound disruptive to the players’ experience, feedback from playtesters was positive. Karam says that folks told him that it added a “strong dose of reality.” It’s an intimate reminder that, although the aesthetic of the game is cartoonish, it’s based off a real person’s story. Someone really had to flee their home to escape violence and war.

“I hope that people will understand who we Syrians are and why some of us showed up at their doorstep,” said Karam. “We are actually pretty normal. Our sense of interior design might be over the top for some Europeans, but at the end of the day, we are just as ordinary citizens with ordinary dreams, hopes and desires. Same goes for me personally. At the end of the day, I’m just a gamer who’s also into wrestling, just like so many other kids from Denmark, Vietnam, Kazachstan, Illinois or Uruguay.”

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

Blind baseball announcer creates 'a theatre of the mind' with his colour commentary https://briefnews.eu/blind-baseball-announcer-creates-a-theatre-of-the-mind-with-his-colour-commentary/ https://briefnews.eu/blind-baseball-announcer-creates-a-theatre-of-the-mind-with-his-colour-commentary/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 18:42:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blind-baseball-announcer-creates-a-theatre-of-the-mind-with-his-colour-commentary/

Monday May 22, 2017

Bryce Weiler has been the colour commentator for more than 100 baseball, basketball and soccer games on the radio, painting vivid scenes of the play and the crowds, while providing detailed analysis and background on the coaches and athletes.

“I analyze what is happening in the game, since I cannot see the action on the field, so I look up statistics on players and coaches as well as try to speak to a player or a coach for each team as well,” the 26-year-old Chicago resident told As It Happens host Carol Off.

‘It’s as if a book is opening up on the radio in front of you.’– Bryce Weiler

Weiler has been blind his entire life, born with retinopathy of prematurity, which causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retinas of premature babies.

He’s done radio commentary for dozens of college and minor league games, usually working alongside a play-by-play announcer to provide analysis, background and colour commentary.

He weaves in relevant information from his research about the players and coaches, and tries to paint picture of the scene so listeners can immerse themselves in the game. For that, he says, a good crowd mic is key.

“When one listens to a game he or she can get pictures in their mind about what the commentator says about the vendors coming around hawking peanuts and hotdogs or of a foul ball hit into the stands and the mad scramble by small children to go chasing after that baseball,” he said.

“So it’s really a theatre of the mind, and it’s as if a book is opening up on the radio in front of you.”

He’ll also offer a bit of play-by-play, when the time is right.

“I also pay attention by tracking first pitch strikes. That can be very useful, when there is a good crowd microphone, so I can hear the umpire calling a pitch, a ball or a strike so I do not have to let the other commentator say that,” he said.

While he admits people tend to be surprised by what he does for a living, he says he’s just doing his job.

“There’s other commentators who’ve been blind before. I don’t really concern myself with what other people think, I just try to go out and commentate the best that I can every day and analyze what is happening in games,” he said.

A major example is Enrique Oliu, an analyst for the Tampa Bay Rays’ Spanish-language radio broadcasts, who has also been blind since birth.

World Series Phillies Rays Baseball

Despite Weiler’s professionalism and experience, finding employment in his field is no easy task.

“Most of the analyst roles go to former players and coaches, and the play-by-play roles are handled by individuals who can see,” he said. “But I’ll still continue to commentate as many games as I can.”

But his other passion — making the sports experience more accessible to people with disabilities — has led to career opportunities for Weiler.

He’s done some work improving accessibility and fan outreach for theBaltimore Orioles, and next month, he begins work full-time for the Connecticut New Britain Bees minor league baseball team.

“I’m going to commentate for them a little bit, but also work to create programs to help disabled fans have better experiences at their home games, also giving these disabled individuals and groups opportunities to play on the field,” he said.

“That is where I can really help individuals is through using my journey through sports to help them have the same experiences that I’ve been able to have.”

Second Glance: The Potent Political Commentary of (the First Film Version of) ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ https://briefnews.eu/second-glance-the-potent-political-commentary-of-the-first-film-version-of-the-handmaids-tale/ https://briefnews.eu/second-glance-the-potent-political-commentary-of-the-first-film-version-of-the-handmaids-tale/#respond Mon, 17 Apr 2017 13:08:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/second-glance-the-potent-political-commentary-of-the-first-film-version-of-the-handmaids-tale/ Welcome to “Second Glance,” a bi-weekly column that spotlights an older film of note that was not as commercially or critically successful as it should’ve been. This week, we look at the original 1990 film adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

You don’t need an MBA from Harvard to guess why Shout Factory not only selected Volker Schlöndorff’s The Handmaid’s Tale as the latest title in their Shout Selects line, but chose to put it out this week. We are, after all, just days from the debut of new Hulu series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s book, and there is a new audiobook (with expanded material — potentially even teasing a sequel); The Handmaid’s Tale is, for lack of a better word, hot right now. But it’s also remained an unfortunately relevant piece of work – and though the earlier film version has to (understandably) skim some of that subtext, it’s still a reasonably successful piece of work.

And it comes with a good pedigree: director Schlöndorff helmed The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and the 1979 Palme d’or winner The Tin Drum, so he knows a thing or two about political cinema, and the adaptation is credited to the great Harold Pinter. His original script was reportedly reworked greatly (much to his vocal displeasure), but enough of his blunt intelligence, coupled with Atwood’s forceful commentary and allegory, shines through.

Set at unspecified point in the future, in which the United States has become “The Republic of Gilead,” the film begins with Kate (Natasha Richardson) attempting a border crossing to Canada with her husband and daughter. But their immigration is blocked by the brutal border patrol, and they’re tossed into a camp, where health tests identify Kate as fertile; one of only 1% of the population that can conceive a child, a side effect of overwhelming pollution. “You’re the lucky ones!” she and her fellow “handmaids” are told by “Aunt Lydia” (Victoria Tennant), who will prepare them for their new roles. “You’re going to serve God and your country.”

After a period of shaming and indoctrination (they’re forced to pray to God to “make us all fruitful”), our heroine gets her assignment. She is sent to the home of Serena (Faye Dunaway) and her husband, referred to only as “The Commander” (Robert Duvall –“And Robert Duvall as The Commander,” by the way, is an all-time great opening credit, for reasons I can’t even articulate). As their household handmaid, she is to part of a rather unfortunate three-person sex situation (called “The Ceremony”), in which the husband attempts to impregnate the handmaid, while the wife participates as best she can. It seems pretty miserable for all parties.

But there’s an uprising in the offing, and Kate is game – especially since The Commander keeps insisting on unofficial encounters, without his wife there, filled with clumsy passes and forced pleasantries. She becomes involved with his driver, a smoldering, buzz-cut Aidan Quinn (their sex scenes feel very much like the movie trying to have it both ways), and she finds herself with a way out, albeit a risky one.

This Handmaid’s Tale never found an audience, perhaps due to the growing pains of upstart (and short-lived) producers Cinecom Entertainment Group, or the ongoing struggles of can’t-catch-a-break distributors MGM (or perhaps it was the hilariously ill-conceived print campaign that tried to make it look like, not making this up, an erotic thriller); its widest release was on 177 screens, and its domestic gross topped out just shy of $ 5 million. Then again, the early ‘90s were also not exactly a robust period in political cinema, and the influence of the Moral Majority – so clearly felt in Atwood’s text – wasn’t as pronounced in the Bush I White House as it had been in Reagan’s.

But, sadly, it sure is now. With Trump (who in January prohibited funding of international organizations that provide family planning, and just this week proudly signed a bill allowing states to cut funding to Planned Parenthood) in the White House, these are dangerous times for reproductive autonomy. And with an Evangelical nutjob who only sees women as baby ovens in the VP’s office, a line like “We pledge allegiance to the Bible, the Old Testament shall be our sole and only Constitution” doesn’t sound like dystopian science fiction; it sounds like a Heritage Foundation position paper. (Meanwhile, the propagandistic TV news, in which an anchor insists “We are winning God’s fight,” looks like a clip from Thursday night’s Hannity.) “We will not rest until we’ve purified this country in the name of God,” the Commander insists. It probably sounded like hyperbole back in 1990.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is out on Blu-ray tomorrow from Shout Select. It’s also available for download via Amazon.

Sarah Silverman to Host Hulu Political Commentary Series https://briefnews.eu/sarah-silverman-to-host-hulu-political-commentary-series/ https://briefnews.eu/sarah-silverman-to-host-hulu-political-commentary-series/#respond Tue, 28 Mar 2017 00:45:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sarah-silverman-to-host-hulu-political-commentary-series/ It seems that Hulu may have found their John Oliver/Samantha Bee (as in, slightly less genericized, less nightly, political commentating comedian) in Sarah Silverman. (One might throw Bill Maher in that category as well, but let’s not.) The network just announced that they’ve given a “straight to series” 10 episode order to I Love You, America, from Funny or Die. The half hour series was described, in a press release from the network, “a topical show” that “discuss[es] the current political/emotional landscape of the country.”

The series is executive produced by Silverman, Anchorman/The Big Short director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell (who together co-founded Funny or Die), and Amy Zvi. Here’s the official description from Hulu:

Sarah Silverman has created her fair share of online chatter, but with this show she’s looking to connect with people who may not agree with her personal opinions through honesty, humor, genuine interest in others, and not taking herself too seriously. While it’s great to connect with like-minded people, Silverman feels it’s crucial, now more than ever, to connect with un-like-minded people. She is teaming up with producers Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Funny Or Die, in creating a show setting out to expose the fact that we are all the same.  Oh, and it will be funny too.
