Hillary Clinton delivered the commencement address at Wellesley College on Friday. Her speech marked the third time she’s spoken at her alma mater’s commencement and came 48 years after she did so for the first time at her own graduation. The former first lady, U.S. senator, and Democratic presidential nominee never mentioned Donald Trump by name, but the president’s unspoken presence was impossible to miss in remarks that were funny, impassioned, and—fitting the occasion—exceedingly optimistic.

Clinton drew the loudest cheers from the assembled students when she delivered a history lesson on where things stood in the United States back when she addressed her own class at its graduation in 1969, the same year Richard Nixon was sworn in as president. The similarities to the present did not go unnoticed by the crowd:

I stayed up all night with my friends … writing and editing the speech. By the time we gathered in the academic quad, I was exhausted. My hair was a wreck. The mortarboard made it even worse. But I was pretty oblivious to all of that, because what my friends had asked me to do was to talk about our worries, and about our ability and responsibility to do something about them. We didn’t trust government, authority figures—or really anyone over 30. In large part, thanks to years of heavy casualties, and dishonest statements about Vietnam, and deep differences over civil rights and poverty here at home, we were asking urgent questions about whether women, people of color, religious minorities, immigrants would ever be treated with dignity and respect. And by the way, we were furious about the past presidential election of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice. After firing the person running the investigation into him at the department of justice.

You can watch the full address above (Clinton’s speech starts at around the 51-minute mark), but a few other highlights:

“Chardonnay helped”

I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be this year than right here. You may have heard that things didn’t exactly go the way I planned. But you know what? I’m doing OK. I’ve gotten to spend time with my family, especially my amazing grandchildren. I was going to give the entire commencement speech about them but was talked out of it. Long walks in the woods. Organizing my closets, right? I won’t lie: Chardonnay helped a little too.

“A full-fledged assault on truth”

You are graduating at a time when there is a full-fledged assault on truth and reason. Just log on to social media for ten seconds. It will hit you right in the face. People denying science, concocting elaborate, hurtful conspiracies theories about child abuse rings operating out of pizza parlors. Drumming up rampant fear about undocumented immigrants, Muslims, minorities, the poor. Turning neighbor against neighbor and sowing division at a time when we desperately need unity. Some are even denying things we see with our own eyes. Like the size of crowds. And then defending themselves by talking about, quote-unquote, alternative facts.

“An attack of unimaginable cruelty”

Look at the budget that was just proposed in Washington. It is an attack of unimaginable cruelty on the most vulnerable among us, the youngest, the oldest, the poorest, and hard working people who need a little help to gain or hang on to a decent middle class life. It grossly underfunds public education, mental health, and efforts even to combat the opioid epidemic. And in reversing our commitment to fight climate change, it puts the future of our nation and our world at risk. And to top it off, it was shrouded in a trillion-dollar mathematical lie. Let’s call it what it is. It’s a con. They don’t even try to hide it. Why does all this matter? It matters because if our leaders lie about the problems we face, we’ll never solve them. It matters because it undermines confidence in government as a whole, which in turn breeds more cynicism and anger. But it also matters because our country, like this college, was founded on the principles of the enlightenment. In particular, the belief that people, you and I, possess the capacity for reason and critical thinking. And that free and open debate is the lifeblood of a democracy.

“Don’t let anyone tell you …”

Don’t let anyone tell you your voice doesn’t matter. In the years to come, there will be trolls galore online and in person, eager to tell you that you don’t have anything worthwhile to say or anything meaningful to contribute. They may even call you a nasty woman. Some may take a slightly more sophisticated approach and say your elite education means you are out of teach with real people. In other words, sit down and shut up. Now, in my experience, that’s the last thing you should ever tell a Wellesley graduate.

This isn’t the first time Clinton has taken a post-election swing at Trump. It’s a safe bet it won’t be the last.

12 years after he famously dropped out of Harvard to run Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg finally returned on Thursday to receive his degree.

Zuckerberg will give the commencement address for his alma mater’s class of 2017, making the 33-year-old CEO the youngest commencement speaker in Harvard’s history.

You can watch Zuckerberg’s speech live at 3 pm EST on his Facebook page, where it should also be available to view afterwards. The speech will also be streamed on Harvard’s website.

Zuckerberg has been teasing his triumphant return to Harvard in a series of Facebook posts over the past week, including an old video shot by his dad that shows the moment he found out he had been accepted. On Wednesday, he and his wife Priscilla Chan visited his old college dorm room to reminisce about Facebook’s early days and hot pockets.

“At tomorrow’s commencement, I’ll share what I’ve learned about our generation and the world we’re all building together,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “This is personally important to me and I’ve been writing it for a while.”

‘Buy Rosetta Stone & learn Russian’: John Kerry bashes Trump at Harvard commencement https://briefnews.eu/buy-rosetta-stone-learn-russian-john-kerry-bashes-trump-at-harvard-commencement/ https://briefnews.eu/buy-rosetta-stone-learn-russian-john-kerry-bashes-trump-at-harvard-commencement/#respond Thu, 25 May 2017 00:20:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/buy-rosetta-stone-learn-russian-john-kerry-bashes-trump-at-harvard-commencement/ Former Secretary of State John Kerry took some light-hearted and more serious jabs at President Donald Trump during a commencement address at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, including allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Kerry returned to Massachusetts, the state he represented in the US Senate for 28 years, to address graduates of the prestigious Cambridge school. As with most commencement speeches, he offered the new alumni some advice.

“I’m often asked what the secret is to have a real impact on government,” he said. “Well, it’s recently changed.”

“I used to say, either run for office or get a degree from Harvard Kennedy School. With this White House I’d say, buy Rosetta Stone and learn Russian,” he joked. The audience cheered.

Kerry, a graduate of Yale, Harvard’s rival in the Ivy League, made reference to one of Trump’s seemingly favorite phrases in another joke: “Let me be honest about it. When it was first reported that a Yale grad was going to be speaking at Harvard’s Kennedy School, the initial reaction was: Fake news!”

Despite jokes about Trump ‒ and maybe being called upon to make peace between White House press secretary Sean Spicer and the press ‒ Kerry buckled down to more serious attacks on the president.

“I did not come here to be partisan. Or political. Or pessimistic. But I need to tell the truth,” Kerry said. “And I refuse to self-consciously twist myself into a pretzel and put on a contrived mantle of bipartisanship that alleges both parties are to blame for what’s happening – or not happening.”

“And anyway, you wouldn’t buy it since so many of you have marched and protested to take a public stand on your own,” he added.

Going back to his earlier comments about fake news, Kerry noted that a democracy doesn’t just rely on free speech, “but it relies even more on the speech being truthful. It is the truth after all that sets us free. And the truth is – no, this is not a normal time.”

Kerry then listed Trump’s actions that the former secretary of state deemed “not normal,” such as attacking judges, threatening journalists and firing the director of the FBI. “And it’s not normal that when you close your eyes and listen to the news, too often the political back and forth in America sounds too much like it does in the kinds of countries that the State Department warns Americans not to travel to.”

Yet Kerry also expressed optimism that Trump would not be allowed to destroy the US.

“I’m old enough to have seen a movie like this, maybe a time or two, and that’s why, about this part of the story at least, I’m actually more of an optimist,” he said, noting that Senator Joseph McCarthy and President Richard Nixon were both brought down through “the inherent strength of our Constitution and the courage of individual Senators, regardless of party,” who “empowered America to find its way out of what President [Gerald] Ford called a ‘national nightmare.’”

The only true crisis that could not be solved in a way the founding fathers envisioned in the Constitution was the Civil War, he said, citing President Abraham Lincoln’s quote that slavery would only be resolved by the sword.

“You know what, I don’t think even [President] Andrew Jackson could’ve stopped that one,” Kerry joked, referring to Trump’s “bizarre” assertion that the seventh president would have prevented the Civil War, which began 16 years after his death.

Kerry also focused a significant amount of his speech on the effect of technology on jobs, noting that “technology ‒ not trade” is the reason the US “hemorrhaged” manufacturing jobs in the first decade of the 21st Century.

“The worst thing I could do is insult your intelligence by pretending that it’s smooth sailing for America and the world,” he said, later adding, “I’m not surprised that a lot of folks want to stop the world and get off.”

Knowing that people are losing jobs due to technology isn’t enough, and the fact that “the same technology that eliminated your job also gave you a smartphone that lets you binge-watch a future that’s out of reach for you and everyone you grew up with” is “zero comfort” for those people, Kerry said.

He glossed over the fact that, during the 2016 presidential election, Trump was able to reach those voters in states that had previously voted Democratic, a major reason the Republican was able to flip states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Instead, Kerry noted that the coming technological changes will make the unsolved jobs crisis in the Rust Belt states of West Virginia and Ohio “look like child’s play.”

“And what concerns me is that if our institutions can’t build consensus and respond to the demand of Americans for jobs today – how are we ever going to do it in a time when artificial intelligence and robotics kick in and five times that number of jobs disappear twice as fast?” he said.

Kerry did offer some praise for Trump however, complimenting the president’s speech in Saudi Arabia on Sunday that called on Muslim nations to “drive out” Islamic extremists, though he argued that education and jobs are the answer to combating terrorism.

At the end of his speech, the former secretary of state urged the graduates to fight for democracy in America and abroad.

Kerry was not the only former Obama administration official to address Harvard grads this commencement season. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, who was fired by Trump, also spoke at Harvard campus events last week.

Education Secretary DeVos booed at historic black college during commencement speech https://briefnews.eu/education-secretary-devos-booed-at-historic-black-college-during-commencement-speech/ https://briefnews.eu/education-secretary-devos-booed-at-historic-black-college-during-commencement-speech/#respond Wed, 10 May 2017 22:07:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/education-secretary-devos-booed-at-historic-black-college-during-commencement-speech/ Shouts and boos disrupted Education Secretary Betsy DeVos during her first official commencement speech, with one student escorted out of the ceremony by security. Many at the historically black Bethune-Cookman University simply turned their backs on her.

DeVos and hundreds of graduates arriving at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Wednesday were met by dozens of protesters outside and the demonstrations resonated inside as well.

Despite some applause from student leaders and faculty in the front rows, the hecklers overwhelmed parts of DeVos’ address, forcing her to raise her voice in order to be heard.

The Trump administration has been reaching out to historically black colleges as it attempts to build support for a major school choice reform push, but many at B-CU saw DeVos as taking no interest in their school, and rather taking advantage of a photo opportunity.

Anger towards DeVos is about more than her being an extension of President Donald Trump, however. In February, she called historically black colleges and universities “pioneers” of “school choice,” and while she also talked about historical systemic racism denying blacks education, her widely quoted remarks were taken by some as ignorant or racist.

“She made racist comments about HBCUs, she doesn’t know anything about us, and she has the nerve to come down here and speak to us,” graduate Donjele Simpson told the Washington Post.

Bethune-Cookman University had been on edge for days, with multiple petitions opposing DeVos’ visit garnering thousands of signatures.

Not only did some faculty and alumni demand her address be canceled, but so did a national teachers’ union. The Florida NAACP even called for university President Edison Jackson to resign.

Students began booing even before DeVos took the stage, as B-CU President Jackson welcomed longtime Trump advisor Omarosa Manigault. Jackson stopped his introduction and told those booing, “You don’t know her. You don’t know her story,” the Washington Post reported.

When it came time for DeVos to speak, about half of the 380 graduates stood and turned their backs on her, according to the Post.

DeVos cited the university founder Mary McLeod Bethune and the school motto, “Enter to learn, depart to serve,” but interruptions from the crowd did not cease.

“If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you,” Jackson threatened the students.

Not all resented DeVos for showing up, however. Jacari Harris, a junior and former student body president, told the Washington Post that the education secretary was “awesome.”

“I’m so glad she’s here,” Harris said. “She’s very transparent, she has a listening ear. We told her about some of the issues we are facing, about students who are single parents, or come from single-parent families, even students who are homeless, and she agreed that we need to find a way to address all of this. She knows the need. It was a great dialogue.”
