Russia is commemorating the victims of political persecution in the former Soviet Union, particularly, the Stalinist repressions. Unveiling a new memorial on its national Day of Mourning, President Vladimir Putin said nothing can justify such actions of a government.
The 30-meter-long “Wall of Grief” memorial was presented in Moscow’s center Monday. Stone fragments collected throughout Russia, at sites where prison camps of the infamous GULAG system operated under Joseph Stalin, form part of the sculpture’s design.
President Putin recalled that under the system of state terror during Stalin’s rule, “any person could face made-up and absolutely absurd charges.”
“Millions of people were branded as enemies of the people, were executed or crippled, underwent torture in prisons and forced deportations,” he said. “This terrible past cannot be erased from the national memory. And certainly cannot be justified by whatever imaginary greater good of the people.”
Putin was clear that unlike some other episodes in Russia’s past, which are subject to controversy and heated public discourse, Stalin’s terror is not something that’s up for debate.
“It was about death and suffering of millions. One should only visit… mass graves of the victims, which are many in Russia, to realize that there is no justification for those crimes,” he said.
“The persecution campaign was a tragedy for our people, our society, a ruthless blow to our culture, roots and identity. We can feel the consequences now and our duty is not to allow it to be forgotten.”
The memorial was co-funded by the government and donations from the public. The GULAG museum announced a tender for the project last year, with sculptor Georgy Frangulyan’s creation picked from more than 330 designs.
The persecution of people under Stalin continued throughout his rule, peaking in the so-called Great Purge of 1936-1938. Estimates of how many people were affected vary due to inconsistencies in historic documents and depend on who is considered a victim by a particular researcher.
The prominent Memorial NGO, dedicated to researching dark pages of the Soviet history, believes up to 39 million people may have suffered from the repression throughout the decades. These include those sent to jail under false or political charges; many being forcibly displaced; others arbitrary stripped of their citizen rights; and scores killed by mass famine in the early 1930s.

People marched towards Bosporus Bridge where a tense standoff between rogue military personnel and supporters of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan occurred a year ago. The bridge has been officially renamed the July 15 Martyr’s Bridge following the dramatic events on that date.
Thousands of people were seen waving Turkey’s national flag as well as holding photos of coup victims. Some could be heard chanting, “We are soldiers of Tayyip [Erdogan].”
The march concluded with a massive rally in the vicinity of the bridge. The gathering was attended by Erdogan himself. The president had earlier arrived from the capital, Ankara, aboard the presidential plane escorted by an F-16 fighter jet.
“My dear citizens, I want to salute you with honor, love and heartfelt feelings,” Erdogan told the crowd. “Like the day of the coup, our nation stood up with their faith against violence.”
The Turkish president praised the unarmed citizens who stood up against the rogue military and their tanks. “Did our citizens have guns in their hands? Just like today, they only had flags in their hands. But they had an even stronger weapon. Their faith,” Erdogan said.
Earlier Saturday, Turkey’s PM Binali Yildirim called the night of July 15 a “second War of Independence” equating the historic importance of the coup defeat to the emergence of the modern Turkish state from the ruins of Ottoman Empire in the early 1920s. “It’s one year since the darkest night was turned into an epic,” Yildirim told a special session of parliament, launching the massive celebrations across the country.
The commemorations, demonstrating Turkish “national unity,” were somewhat soured with a new announcement of the sacking of some 7,400 civil servants for their alleged links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen and terrorist groups in accordance with a government decree issued late Friday.
Turkish authorities pinned the blame for the coup attempt on Gulen almost immediately after last year’s dramatic events. No hard evidence of his involvement has been presented, however, while Gulen himself has repeatedly denied the accusations.
Ankara launched a massive crackdown on alleged coup supporters as well as opposition figures and journalists in the aftermath of the attempted coup. Over 50,000 people have been arrested and more than 150,000 civil servants, police officers and soldiers have been dismissed.
A conspiracy theory claiming that the coup attempt was “controlled” by Ankara in a bid to set a pretext for Erdogan to get rid of his opponents took hold after the failed coup, but this assertion has been vehemently denied and rejected. “That was not a controlled coup attempt, but it was coup attempt which was averted by the Turkish people,” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus told reporters Friday as quoted by Sputnik.
He added, “our aim is to find those who have links with this [Fethullah Gulen] organization and is supporting this organization. We are trying to purge those. We do not want to make any unfair treatment.”
In the aftermath of the coup, Erdogan criticized the somewhat muted reaction of his Western allies.
NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg used the coup’s anniversary as an opportunity to remind Ankara that he had promptly condemned the coup and expressed solidarity with Turkey.
“Democracy and rule of law are shared values of NATO Allies. On the first anniversary of the coup attempt in Turkey I reiterate my strong message that any attempt to undermine democracy in any of our Allied countries is unacceptable,” Stoltenberg said in a statement.
More than 240 people were killed and over 2,000 injured in the failed coup attempt according to official data.

Barbara Buttrick on the first official Women’s World Boxing Champion title in 1957
As Brit Anthony Joshua is crowned the new world heavyweight champion, another remarkable UK world champion boxer is being commemorated.
When the curtain goes up on the new play Mighty Atoms at Hull Truck Theatre as part of Hull’s City of Culture programme on June 8 – election night – all attention will be focused on one of the city’s more remarkable daughters.
For the drama, about a group of women taking part in a boxercise lesson above a pub, has been inspired by the life of the diminutive Barbara Buttrick, the Mighty Atom herself, and a pioneering figure in women’s boxing.
Barbara, now aged 87 and living in Florida, won the first official Women’s World Boxing Champion title in 1957.

She only ever lost one fight but she encountered appalling prejudice along the way.
“What a monstrous, degrading, disgusting idea,” one paper said of a woman’s desire to fight, just one of many examples of the venom aimed at her.
She had to move countries to realise her full potential but always kept ties with her home town.

Barbara only ever lost one fight but she encountered appalling prejudice along the way
Barbara was born in Cottingham, outside Hull, in 1930, the only child of a clerk who worked for the bus service. Her interest in boxing was sparked when she was 15.
“I used to play soccer in the street with the boys and I was trying to put a team together,” she recalls.
“The mother of a friend put some newspaper on the floor to clean our shoes on and I saw a piece about Polly the Champ [Polly Burns, an Irish featherweight in the 1920s and another female pioneer] and I realised I wanted to do that.
I was already interested in boxing and had pictures of boxers on my walls so I got a punch bag and some equipment and started out.”
At just 4ft 11in, she soon earned herself the nickname Mighty Atom.
Barbara’s parents were not thrilled by their daughter’s new interest but put up with it. And it soon became clear that she’d have to put up with much more abuse elsewhere.
Boxing News ran a piece about “the weaker sex”, saying they were welcome at boxing matches… as spectators.
Barbara penned an angry letter back and this eventually came to the attention of one Leonard Smith in London.
He worked in a gym that had a section for “tough girls” but was himself initially against women boxing, as was another leading trainer, Wally May, who dubbed them “lady leather-pushers”.
However Leonard was encouraged to get Barbara to come to the capital.
“I was coming anyway to stay with evacuees who had previously stayed with families in the countryside,” she explains.
“They were inviting us all up to London and it was my turn.” Barbara soon decided to stay. Despite his previous misgivings Leonard began to coach her at the Mayfair Gym, which also played host to film stars including Richard Attenborough.
Barbara would work as a typist during the day to support herself and then spend three hours in the gym at night.
She was just seven stone and was fed a diet of meat and beer to help her “beef up”. Gradually romance blossomed between Barbara and Leonard, despite the fact that she once broke his nose.

After embarking on her professional career in 1948, Barbara continued to encounter a great deal of hostility.
“The moral majority thought she was unacceptable,” says Amanda Whittington, the play’s author.
“People on councils said they wouldn’t have such a spectacle in their town. She was treated as a novelty act, forced to perform in carnivals and freak shows. But she was utterly single-minded and wanted to be taken seriously, which is why she went to the US.”
Barbara herself commented that the insults went over her head and she never looked for approval. But she has spoken more recently of the sexism she faced and noted that “around the time I was fighting, they started opening strip clubs in Britain.
“They were quite happy to have women take their clothes off in front of them but didn’t want to see them fight.”
She also realised at the time that she would have to make her career elsewhere. In May 1952 Barbara and Leonard got married and in November they emigrated.
“The opportunities were so much bigger over there,” she says. The opportunities lived up to their billing. Barbara fought in Canada – where one of her matches became the first women’s fight to be broadcast on the radio – Chicago and southern Florida.
She based herself at Miami’s famous 5th Street Gym where another regular was Muhammad Ali, then still plain Cassius Clay.

Barbara Buttrick retired in 1960 and founded the Women’s International Boxing Federation
He would not, however, have noticed Barbara, despite her gender. “He was all about himself, even then,” Barbara comments wryly.
She won the Women’s World Boxing Champion title aged just 26 in 1957 when she fought American Phyllis Kugler and, after retiring in 1960, she founded the Women’s International Boxing Federation and became its president. In 2014 Barbara was inaugurated into the Women’s International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Female boxers are no longer a novelty. Indeed, it is now an Olympic sport. Barbara was there when Team GB’s Nicola Adams won gold at the London Olympics and was delighted when she won in Rio four years later.
They train in the same gym. “We met and she knew who I was,” Barbara says.
“I am thrilled that women like Nicola have the choice to do whatever they want. The sportswomen I meet tell me what I did encouraged them.”
Barbara and Leonard, who died earlier this year, had two daughters, Michele and Beverly. Barbara now has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Were her daughters ever tempted to follow their mother into the ring? “No,” says Barbara firmly. The family would return to the UK during the summer, where Barbara would catch up with the boys, now men, with whom she used to play football. Her parents did come round to what their daughter did.
“After my father passed away I took my mother to the US on holiday,” she says. “I took her to boxing shows and introduced her to my friends. I think she enjoyed it.”
Amanda Whittington came across Barbara’s story when she was researching her history. “I thought, why didn’t more people know about her?” she says.
“I was delighted to tell her story on stage. Barbara was a pioneer because in the 1940s and 1950s the whole idea of women boxing was itself an aberration.
“She was breaking down barriers not just in sport but in society. The play is inspired by her spirit and asking who is the Barbara Buttrick of today.”
Back to Barbara. How does it feel to have a play inspired by her life? “I’m very happy things are like they are now,” she says.
“When I started there was a lot of criticism. Girls are more accepted now.”
Thousands of people have rallied in Donetsk to remind the world about the second anniversary of the Minsk II Protocols, urging Kiev to deliver on its long-overdue obligations and put an end to the bloodshed in the east of Ukraine.
The rally took place at the central square of Donetsk on Saturday to commemorate the second anniversary of the Minsk agreements and to protest Ukrainian aggression. Despite the wintery weather, thousands of people, including representatives of the self-proclaimed republic’s authorities, took part in the anti-war march and demonstration, according to local media.
The protest started with a moment of silence for all the civilians who had been killed during the conflict.
“During the Minsk talks the world has heard us, and they know the truth. They talk more and more that it’s Ukraine who’s guilty in deaths of innocent people there,” deputy chairwoman of the Donetsk People’s Republic Council, Olga Makeeva, told the rally.
The protesters carried flags of the unrecognized Donetsk Republic and placards, which read “Ukraine, stop ignoring the ‘Minsk’ terms,” “Poroshenko, you’ve signed ‘Minsk,’ now implement it,” “Ukraine, implement the agreement” and others.
The Minsk Protocol is a roadmap to a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukrainian authorities and rebellious regions. Minsk II was endorsed on February 11, 2015, by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany and further backed by a unanimous UNSC resolution on February 17. The document is aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine and providing constitutional reforms to grant Donetsk and Lugansk special status and autonomy.
However, Kiev has thus far failed to grasp the political changes, instead opting to blame Moscow for the unresolved conflict. Russia utterly fails to understand the tendency in the West to lay responsibility for the settlement of the Ukraine crisis exclusively on Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Munich.

On Saturday, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that “temporarily” recognizes documents issued by authorities in the troubled Donbass region as legal in Russia “based on the norms of international humanitarian law.”
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry responded that Kiev “vigorously condemns” and does not recognize the Russian decree. Having accused Russia of “violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” the ministry claimed the proclamation on the documents was a “de facto recognition of illegal authorities in Donbass.”
Nevertheless, the decree provides relief to the population of the crisis-stricken regions from bureaucratic acrimony, and will be in place until the Minsk agreements aimed at settling the conflict is implemented in Ukraine, the Russian FM stated.
Donald Trump had this mixed comments about the LGBTQ community. However, even if majority of his sentiments are against this minority, it seems that he still got his own set of supporters.
Photograper Lucian Wintrich initiated this #TwinksForTrump rally by creating a photo series of him and other gay men advocating for the republican.
Last week, they held their own convention to show the support of their community to Donald Trump. The big question is, were they able to open the republican conservatives to welcome them in the party or were they just exposed to more online harassment?
According to The Gateway Pundit, it was the other way around. #TwinksForTrump showed great promise. Even Dutch politician Geert Wilders attended the event together with anti-Islamist leader Pamela Geller and Brit icon Milo Yiannopoulos. The event has been successful.

The event space was beautifully concocted with #TwinksForTrumps portraits captured by Wintrich, according to Village Voice. The invites were also fabulous and the party did not disappoint. Though everyone had a wonderful time, the leaders at the event took the opportunity to discuss more serious matters.
Jim Hoft spoke about how Donald Trump is a better choice than Hillary Clinton since he is “a better friend to the LGBT community than Hillary Clinton could ever be.”
Geert Wilders, on the other hand, spoke about the massive surge of Islam in the west. Speaking about the numerous attacks that happened in the U.S. and in Europe, Wilders told the audience to get rid of their political correctness and face reality,
Anywhere in the west, if you allow Islam to be planted on your soil, don’t be surprised that you will harvest Sharia law. Because Islam and Sharia law is exactly the same…. Sharia law means terror.
Pamela Geller was a shining face in the event as well. She called out on the Democrats’ limited action for the LGBT community.
“That’s not gay rights in the 21st century. Gay rights in the 21st century is the persecution, oppression, execution of gays living in Muslim countries under the Sharia.” The gay rights movement and the fight against the Muslim threat are one and the same,” she said. “What greater threat is there to the gay community than Islamic law?”

Milo supported Geller’s claims but he also talked about the massive “fakeness” of Hollywood celebrities he claim to be “brain-dead.” Here, he spoke about the big issue on gun rights policy,
“I still don’t see the reason why the left-wing press mollycoddles and panders to an ideology that wants me dead. I don’t understand why brain-dead celebrities tweet out messages of hope and love…. That’s not going to save you when someone has an AK-47 pointed at you. What’s going to save you is having your own.

Though the leaders and the audiences had great points that could bring light to the acceptance of the LGBTQ community, they still received negative feedback.
The very first question about their support for Donald Trump is the hidden motive.
According to Romper, there are more than ten times Donald Trump publicly dismissed the gay community. Speaking with Fox News, Trump said that he would “strongly consider” appointing a Supreme Court justice that could overturn the same-sex marriage ruling.
He even told Bloomberg that he has been “against (gay marriage) from the standpoint of the Bible” since the very beginning
