The Kepler Space Telescope has officially gone to sleep for good. On November 15th, the death anniversary of its namesake German astronomer Johannes Kepler, its ground team sent it a series of “goodnight” commands. They were meant to disable the telescope’s safety modes that could switch it back on and to shut down its transmitters to completely cut off communications. Since the observatory is spinning, the team had to time their beams — a task they successfully accomplished, because according to Kepler’s Twitter account, it indeed received the final set of commands.
Farewell, planet hunter. Last night, the @NASAKepler space telescope received its final set of commands to disconnect communications with Earth. The “goodnight” commands were sent on the anniversary of the death of the mission’s namesake, Johannes Kepler: https://t.co/dhUCmKmvqW pic.twitter.com/TKkSk0EQ7C
— NASA Kepler and K2 (@NASAKepler) November 16, 2018
Kepler headed to space in 2009 to find Earth-size planets in habitable zones. It found over 2,000 exoplanets during its run — with thousands more still waiting for confirmation — until it ran out of fuel. NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will take over its planet-hunting tasks going forward. TESS left Earth earlier this year and captured its first light image in September.

The success of Internet of Things devices such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home have created an opportunity for developers to build voice-activated applications that connect ever deeper—into customers’ homes and personal lives. And—according to research by a team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)—the potential to exploit some of the idiosyncrasies of voice-recognition machine-learning systems for malicious purposes has grown as well.
Called “skill squatting,” the attack method (described in a paper presented at USENIX Security Symposium in Baltimore this month) is currently limited to the Amazon Alexa platform—but it reveals a weakness that other voice platforms will have to resolve as they widen support for third-party applications. Ars met with the UIUC team (which is comprised of Deepak Kumar, Riccardo Paccagnella, Paul Murley, Eric Hennenfent, Joshua Mason, Assistant Professor Adam Bates, and Professor Michael Bailey) at USENIX Security. We talked about their research and the potential for other threats posed by voice-based input to information systems.
There have been a number of recent demonstrations of attacks that leverage voice interfaces. In March, researchers showed that, even when Windows 10 is locked, the Cortana “assistant” responds to voice commands—including opening websites. And voice-recognition-enabled IoT devices have been demonstrated to be vulnerable to commands from radio or television ads, YouTube videos, and small children.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium, 45, was joined by her husband King Philippe, 58, and their four children Elisabeth, 16, Gabriel, 15, Emmanuel,12, and Eleonore, 10.
Belgian National Day celebrates the separation of the country from the Netherlands.
Mathilde chose a red lace dress with a nude underlay for the event. The dress featured three quarter length sleeves, and came to her knee.
She paired this with an extravagant wide brimmed hat, also red, worn to the side.
Matching her bag to her outfit, the Queen carried a small red clutch bag with a gold clasp.
A pair of red suede court shoes with clear detailing on the sides provided the final red touch.
As befitting her royal status, Mathilde wore a pair of cream gloves.
She added gold touches to the outfit to accessories, wearing a pair of brushed gold earrings and a gold bangle.
Her hair was swept up in to a chic updo, with a side parting hidden underneath her hat.
Mathilde added a pop of colour to her otherwise simple makeup look with a cherry red lipstick.
The Belgian Queen is a fan of vibrant colours, stepping out in a bright yellow dress earlier this month.
She wore the dress while visiting an Art Deco exhibition at the Villa Empain.
She wore a bright yellow dress which had a cut out pattern. A yellow lining could be seen underneath.
To offset the dress, Mathilde chose rose gold accessories – a slim belt and stiletto court shoes.
Despite the warm temperatures, she wore a pair of nude tights.
The Queen matched her outfit with her accessories, wearing a pair of bright yellow hoops and a chunky gold watch.
Villa Empain was a private house built between 1930-1934 by Swiss architect Michel Polak for Baron Louis Empain.
It is now the home of the Boghossian Foundation and is a centre of art and culture, hosting regular exhibitions.
Queen Mathilde is the wife of King Philipe, who become King after his father abdicated in 2013.
Mathilde is the first Belgian-born Queen of Belgium. Born to Jonkheer Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz, who was of Belgian noble ancestry, and his wife, Countess Anna Maria Komorowska, she grew up on her family’s estate Castle Losange in Villers-la-Bonne-Eau in the Bastogne municipality of Belgium, near the Luxembourgish border.

It’s easy enough to summon Alexa on one of Amazon’s speakers, but when you’ve got a million things to ask the voice assistant, it can be a pain having to say “Hey, Alexa” over and over again. Now, Amazon has rolled out a new feature, which gives its Echo speakers the ability to listen to back-to-back commands for the assistant. When you switch on Alexa’s Follow-up Mode, your Echo speaker will continue listening for a second command for a few seconds after you issue the first one — no need to wake it up again by saying “Hey, Alexa.” You’ll know for sure if the device is listening if its blue indicator is on.
Take note, though, that your speaker won’t wait for a follow-up if it’s in the middle of playing music or audiobooks. Also, Alexa won’t respond until it’s “confident you’re speaking to” it. You’d have to talk clearly and audibly, otherwise it won’t be able to separate what you’re saying from background noise. You can also ensure that Alexa won’t think that you’re issuing follow-up commands when you’re talking to someone else by ending the conversation: simply say “stop,” “thank you,” “cancel” or “go to sleep.”
If this sounds useful, because you pepper Alexa with questions and tasks, just fire up the voice assistant’s app and head to Settings. Select the device you want, scroll down, toggle on the mode and you’re good to go.

While voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant are taking over the home, there are still some users who don’t want to talk to their devices. The French company Netatmo, maker of a number of smart home products, wants users to text—not speak—to control their devices no matter where they are. At CES, Netatmo debuted its Smart Home Bot, a digital assistant of sorts that lives within Facebook Messenger that users can text commands to, thereby controlling their smart home devices.
The foundation for the Smart Home Bot comes from Netatmo’s new “with Netatmo” program. Currently, Netatmo devices are compatible with various virtual assistants including Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. But Netatmo’s new program will encourage other companies to partner with Netatmo to make devices that work with the company’s software as well as the Smart Home Bot. At CES, Netatmo is showing off a few of the newest “with Netatmo” devices, including smart lights, blinds, and radiators that will debut in 2018.
Any of the “with Netatmo” devices, as well as Netatmo’s own products, can be controlled through the Smart Home Bot via Facebook Messenger. Essentially, it’s a contact that uses artificial intelligence algorithms and natural language processing to decipher text commands you send it to control different smart home devices. You could text the bot, “Who is at home?” when you’re out, and it’ll reply with photos of the individuals that the Netatmo Welcome recognized in your home. You could also text a command to set your home’s temperature to 70 degrees and a “with Netatmo” smart thermostat would be set to your liking shortly thereafter.
]]>The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act bars companies from collecting audio recordings from kids under 13 without their parents’ permission. However, that raises concerns about voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri or Google Assistant: is it legal for under-13s to use voice commands, given that there’s rarely (if ever) a permanent recording to put them at risk? According to the Federal Trade Commision, the answer is yes… within limits. The agency has stated that it won’t pursue enforcement action against companies simply because they let kids issue voice commands. So long as the firms only hold on to recordings for a brief moment and use them solely for voice commands, they’ll usually be in the clear.
The restrictions pop up when companies start asking for sensitive info or otherwise venture outside of those above-mentioned boundaries. COPPA still applies when companies ask for names and other personal data, and they have to outline how they collect, use and delete audio in their privacy policies. And as you might expect, companies can only use recordings for personal info if they want to avoid running afoul of regulations.
The change prevents companies from treating children exactly the same as they would adults, but it’s still a big deal for anyone making voice assistants and the smart speakers that use them. They don’t have to require parents’ permission before pre-teens are allowed to use these assistants, or prevent that younger audience from using the voice helpers altogether. The FTC’s main challenge is ensuring that companies don’t try to misuse this newfound freedom and collect more data than they should.

One month before Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues the story of the Skywalker saga, the canon of the Star Wars universe will expand with a new story that fills in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Star Wars Battlefront II will include a new campaign mode that tells a canon story in the Star Wars universe from the perspetive of Iden Versio, the leader of a band of Imperial troops known as Inferno Squadron tasked with carrying out the last orders of Emperor Palpatine, left behind in the event of his death. A new cinematic scene from Star Wars Battlefront II shows how Iden Versio receives her orders from the deceased Emperor in the wake of the destruction of the second Death Star.
Watch the Star Wars Battlefront 2 cinematic scene released on the PlayStation YouTube channel:
The clip comes from the aforementioned single player campaign where Iden Versio is at the center of the 30-year quest to avenge the death of the Emperor, continuing to wage war against the New Republic, even in the wake of a crucial loss for the Empire. As you can see, despite the fact that Emperor Palpatine is dead, he has a surrogate hologram (of which there are probably several dispatched) delivering his final orders for the Empire, under the name Operation Cinder.
If that name sounds familiar, that’s because it was a major part of the story in the Marvel Comics series Journey to the Force Awakens: Shattered Empire. The operation calls upon Imperial troops to create chaos on planets across the galaxy by striking them with artificially created environmental disasters in the wake of Emperor Palpatine’s death.
During this scene, we learn that Iden Versio’s father is an Imperial officer, one who has been entrusted with information that the Inferno Squad leader is not yet privy to. In fact, when Versio asks about her next target, the surrogate hologram gets a little aggressive and refuses to indulge information to her. Perhaps this lack of transparency from a hologram of a dead man will create some dissension among the Imperial forces. Maybe even Versio herself will end up turning against the Empire, refusing to take any more orders not give to her by a living commander, turning her from a villain into a hero.
We’ll find out when Star Wars: Battlefront II arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 17, 2017.

Researchers at Zhejiang University published a white paper last Thursday detailing how they were able to attack devices like phones, tablets, and even in-car interfaces using a completely inaudible frequency.
The DolphinAttack uses ultrasonic frequencies to access speech recognition systems such as Siri, Cortana or Alexa. Voice controllable systems (VCS) allow users to control a device with simple voice commands, such as “hey Siri. Open Google.com” with Apple devices or “Alexa, what’s the weather like today?” with Amazon Echo.
Most devices have a Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) microphone, which contains a membrane, or a movable plate that vibrates in response to air pressure changes caused by sound waves. The device records those vibrations and converts them into an electrical signal that can be turned back into sound waves on the receiving end.
The tiny microphones in phones and other devices are able to detect frequencies above 20,000Hz, which cannot be detected by the human ear. Using harmonics, or resonant frequencies that are higher and lower than the fundamental frequency, they were able to translate voice commands into ultrasonic frequencies, which were recognized by the device’s speech recognition system.
“DolphinAttack voice commands, though totally inaudible and therefore imperceptible to [a] human, can be received by the audio hardware of devices, and correctly understood by speech recognition systems,” the team wrote in their paper.
The DolphinAttack was used to execute a number of commands, from “activating Siri to initiate a FaceTime call on an iPhone, activating Google Now to switch the phone to the airplane mode, and even manipulating the navigation system in an Audi automobile.”
Researchers speculated that the attack could also be used to command a device to visit a malicious website that would download a virus, initiate a phone call in order to listen in on the user or instruct the device to send messages or publish materials online under the user’s name.
PayPal even allows users to send money with their smartphone using voice commands, which could potentially be controlled through a DolphinAttack.
Researchers claim they successfully tested the attack in five languages across 16 voice controllable systems including Apple iPhone, Google Nexus, Amazon Echo, and several in-car interfaces.
A separate team in the US also demonstrated that they could use inaudible voice commands to gain access to the Amazon Echo.
The team of researchers at Zhejiang University theorized how hackers could even breach a device that was trained to respond to only one person’s voice. They devised a way that hackers could use voice recordings of the device’s owner to synthesize the opening voice command using pieces of other words. Hackers could use a phrase such as “he carries cake to the city,” and slice up the phonemes to create the phrase “hey, Siri.”
They were even able to create a working portable transmitter using inexpensive parts that could be found in any electronics shop. The hacker could then perform a walk-by attack, gaining control of a device without physically touching it, altering the device settings, or installing any malware. However, the transmitter did not work from more than five feet away.
The team did provide ways the Dolphin attack could be prevented. Users can turn off the waking phrases function to stop hackers from being able to access the voice controllable systems. However, that would mean users would have to manually open the voice recognition interface every time they wanted to use it.
The researchers also suggested device manufacturers design microphones that do not act on ultrasonic frequencies or implement software that ignores commands at a certain frequency.

Speaking in an interview with Glixel, Marks talked about what he thinks will be the next big step for PSVR. Surprisingly, it’s not new tracking systems or peripherals, but what we do with our voices and how virtual worlds react to them.
Marks explained that he was interested in the voice control automation systems that were currently populating homes, like Amazon’s Echo platform. The concept, however, is limited in the real world, according to Marks.
“But if you took that same voice interface and connected it to VR, it could change anything in your world that you want it to,” Marks said. “There’s no limit to the things that we can do with software, right? So my whole world can just be remanufactured by the system at will, by a simple voice command, like, “Let’s go to a castle.” Boom! I can be in a castle. And I can be like, “Oh, no, a castle that has a drawbridge,” and it’ll just happen.
He said that having an entire world to control like this was “a pretty cool thing” that “doesn’t seem very far away.”
Actually developing this kind of technology would probably take “multiple groups and multiple companies,” Marks explained, but it’s still what he suspects will happen to VR in the future.
“That’s why I see it as the holodeck,” he said. “I just put it on and I can make my world anything I want right now. I can say, “Oh yeah, let’s go to a place where…” and if the characters are kind of smart and kind of believable then, yeah, it can all be generated in a pretty rich way. And you’ll have stuff that’s really well authored by game developers, and that’ll be the places you’ll go the most. But you could change almost anything – and everything could potentially be procedurally generated.”
Back at GDC in March Sony showcased its work creating more believable characters in VR, presenting AI that had an understanding of the environments they were in and could react to it. That tech combined with voice control could create some incredibly powerful VR experiences going forward.
