Video
Our team was once star-studded. Ian Thorpe, Cathy Freeman, Geoff Huegill, Grant Hackett, Jana Pittman. Some moved on to have successful post-sport careers while others suffered dark setbacks that continue to provide fun narratives for New Idea.
But I don’t want to read about any of our current athletes in New Idea. And now that Pearson has piked, I don’t even know any of their names. It’s like this current bunch aren’t even trying to bring something to the table. No one’s got a famous spouse sitting in the crowd. There hasn’t even been a questionable slur made on social media that can be spun out of context and used to create an interesting media storm.
How swim star’s dad stole our hearts
This lack of recognisable names and drama leaves the sporting world difficult to navigate for the everyday person.
As what can only be described as workplace bullying, my editor assigned me reporting duties for day one of the Commonwealth Games.
“But I’m gay,” I replied, clutching my chest. The assignment was frightening but I like both a challenge and men in Lycra so I didn’t argue. I promptly picked up my belongings and sauntered down to the other sport reporters who promptly sent me back to my own desk far away from them.
After recapping Wednesday night’s opening ceremony, I was informed the observations made about both Camilla’s clear boredom and her decision to read a magazine were not appreciated by event organisers.
I completely understand where they’re coming from. Gross speculation and gossip does not fit in with the tone they’ve worked tirelessly to create for these fabulous games and I totally respect that. So I’ll focus entirely on the sport.
Here’s a bunch of hot guys I watched at the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics:
The male gymnastics is transfixing. Lean, tanned men with ropy arms from around the world wear cute shorts with tucked-in singlets as they somersault around a mat and swing from various bars. And sometimes they all hug. It’s during this broadcast I pledge to convert to Buddhism so I can be reincarnated as a gymnast beam in my next life.
Over at the swimming, the atmosphere is electric but apparently you had to be there. Seven thousand spectators piled into the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre to see Australia try and win our first golds for the year in the pool. I can’t confirm if any of these seven thousand people present could match names to faces of local competitors.
Seven commentator Basil Zempilas pumped up the men’s 400m freestyle and tried to get us interested.
“He was stung by a bee in the pre-training camp and fortunately the swelling went down fast,” Basil informed us of Australian star swimmer Jack McLoughlin. “His hand actually swelled up quite significantly. He was pretty happy that it came down just as quickly.”
I don’t doubt he was thrilled. But part of me secretly wishes Jack’s significantly swollen hand hadn’t shrunk back down. What a great Commonwealth Games moment we could’ve had if one of our star swimmers walked out to the blocks with a hand the size of an inflatable pool toy. He would’ve stared ahead, embarrassed, hoping no one noticed. But to his surprise, the Australian merchandise department had the foresight to produce big swollen inflatable hands and the arena is full of spectators wearing them in support. It would’ve been heartwarming.
But then disaster would’ve struck when, after diving in, his one freakishly large hand propelled him through the water lopsided which resulted in him just swimming around in really fast circles before getting tangled in the lane ropes.
But even with an unusually large hand, Jack wouldn’t have been the talk of the night. He would’ve been overtaken by proud dad Steve Titmus, whose heartwarming manic cheering for daughter Ariarne in the 200m freestyle quickly turned into heartache when he realised she didn’t actually win.
There’s something about proud dads that is both sweet and mortifying. Basically their loud, unselfconscious screams of encouragement are totally sweet until you realise it’s not someone else’s dad but in fact your dad and he’s in public and there’s a camera crew and oh my god he’s wearing his jandles.
I imagine this was the case for 17-year-old Ariarne when — after scoring silver in Thursday night’s race — she realised the loud ringing in her ears wasn’t caused by an infection from the Gold Coast pool but actually the deafening cries of her father Steve in the stands.
Anticipating the viral moment, producers on the Channel Seven broadcast pounced early and capitalised on dad’s excitement — mic’ing him up just to make sure his screams were captured clearly for easy repetitive playback. Excited dads are easy targets and agree to most things.
Steve delivered from the moment his daughter dived into the chlorinated waters. He got louder with each splash and kick. And by the final 50 metres, he was having a conniption.
“Titnus lifting! Titnus goes hard! HITS THE WALL!” the commentator called.
It was all the confirmation Steve needed. His daughter had won. With his hands thrown into the air, he roared.
But there was a pause from the commentator. And, ever so casually, he added, “ … Jusssst misses” — confirming 17-year-old Canadian Taylor Ruck had touched the wall just nanoseconds before Ariarne. It was the gold medal equivalent of yelling, “Psych!”
Steve couldn’t believe it. His hands fell from the air onto his head in disappointment.
“Oh no,” he gasped.
His wife held him by the belt loop, stopping her husband from marching over to the clumsy commentator and picking a fight. Proud dads are unpredictable when they’re disappointed.
Steve looked at the ground. And then he looked to the pool to see his daughter who just scored silver.
If Ariarne was allowed out of the Athletes Village and able to eat junk food, he’d so take her to Maccas.

Sally Pearson’s bombshell withdrawal made news around the world while Mack Horton’s performance in the pool and Jake Birtwhistle flying home to get silver in the men’s triathlon dominated headlines.
But if you think the action ended there…think again.
From small crowds to a bowls boilover for the ages and an awkward press conference exchange, catch up on drama filled moments from day one on the Gold Coast.
CARNAGE AT THE BOWLS
We haven’t seen drama like this on the lawn bowls greens since the final scene of Mick Molloy’s movie masterpiece Crackerjack.
In one of the greatest upsets in Commonwealth Games (bowls) history, the highly fancied Aussie men’s triples team was beaten by the not-so highly fancied outfit from Jersey.
To give a little bit of perspective on how the two nations have previously fared at the Games, in 15 appearances, Jersey has secured one gold medal while Australia is just ahead with 852.
While it may have been only Round 1 and there is still plenty to play out in the tournament, there is no doubt there would have been a few supporters of Jersey dreaming of doubling that gold medal tally sooner rather than later.
IS ANYONE COMING?
It was the vision that would have had Games organisers very, very nervous.
With Channel 7 showcasing some of the early morning weightlifting, the camera panned to a shot of the stadium. And boy, was it empty.
There was barely an occupied seat in the house for the start of the opening session.
Luckily, things perked up for the afternoon proceedings, with a strong and very vocal crowd getting right behind local hope Alyce Stephenson in the women’s 48kg event.
For a brief moment during the second round, Stephenson held the lead and it felt like the roof might burst off the Carrara Leisure Centre. However, the challengers rallied and Stephenson ended up missing a medal.
NOT HAPPY SALLY
It was by far and away the biggest talking point of day one. Competing at her home Games, Sally Pearson was forced to pull out because of an Achilles injury.
Only hours earlier at the opening ceremony, Pearson completed the baton relay, sporting a massive smile on her face as she waved to the crowd.
But not everyone was impressed with the way the Olympic champion handled things.
At the injury press conference, a journalist from the BBC asked if Pearson felt she had been ‘disingenuous’ by taking part in the opening night celebrations.
It would be fair to say it was an awkward vibe in the room after that.
CONTROVERSY AT THE POOL
It was the moment that left everyone poolside speechless and brought the Commonwealth Games its first sporting controversy.
Everything was going perfectly for reigning world and Commonwealth champion Ben Proud, who flew through the water in the 50m butterfly heats.
However, when he turned around to check his time, there was a big “DQ” slated next to his name.
After breaking at the start, the British star was disqualified by swimming officials.
Not only was everyone poolside stunned, even Aussie swimming great Ian Thorpe, who was in commentary, struggled to put into words what had happened.
Thorpe could only muster cries of “no” and a “woah” from the booth.
The moment may have brought back some bad memories for Thorpie, who almost missed his pet event at the 2004 Olympics after false starting at the Australian qualifiers.
Luckily, Craig Stevens stepped aside and allowed Thorpe to walk away with Athens gold.
BEWARE OF THE SHARKS
After listening to Tonga’s Finau Ohuafi, no swimmer should ever complain about training conditions again.
Ohuafi placed fourth in his 50m butterfly heat before giving an insight into his training conditions back home.
“I’m not used to swimming in pools,” he told reporters.
“We don’t have pools in Tonga. There is a 25m pool at a hotel where we go to train, but we swim in the sea. It’s difficult because you don’t have starting blocks.
“For me it’s nice to swim in the sea but one time me and my cousin were training we saw a shark.”
That’s right, Ohuafi trains with sharks! No wonder the 17-year-old had no fear of any of his rival swimmers.
THE COOLEST MAN ON THE COAST
You might struggle to find a more relaxed athlete at these Commonwealth Games than Uganda’s Julius Ssekitoleko.
Competing in the weightlifting and having twice failed to pick up the 67kg bar, Ssekitoleko strode out for his third attempt as if he was going for a Sunday stroll.
With the time limit ticking down to just single figures, it promoted a contender for commentary call of the day.
“Dude, on the bar. Come on, let’s go,” said the channel 7 presenter. Outstanding!
But, like a university student who claims they do their best work under the pressure of a tight deadline, Ssekitoleko delivered the goods. Pressure…what pressure?!
He lifted the weight and, as cool as he arrived, walked back to the change room.
Its capital is not London but Banjul, according to the glossy 130-page program which contains an official welcome from the Queen.
The nation that gave us the entire Commonwealth, not to mention the Games, is also listed as having over two million citizens — a far cry from its actual population of more than 66.5 million people.
And the program says England’s first Commonwealth Games were in 1970, when in fact it was 1930.
The glaring errors have been revealed in the $ 10 program which includes welcome messages from dignitaries including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and Commonwealth Games Federation president Louise Martin.
The program includes profiles on the 71 Commonwealth Games nations.
Publishers the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) appear to have mixed up England’s profile with that of Gambia, a tiny African nation which only rejoined the Commonwealth a few weeks before the Coast Games.
Its capital is Banjul and it has a population of 2,051,363 people.
“It’s a pretty embarrassing clanger,” a Games volunteer who discovered the gaffe told News Corp.
“This is the official program that thousands of people will buy as a keepsake and the details on the country that created the Commonwealth are wrong.
“If GOLDOC knew about the mistake, it must have been too late or too expensive to reprint the magazine.”
Comment was being sought from GOLDOC.
Our swimmers are always among the most high-profile athletes going in to major competitions, but have failed to live up to the hype at the last two Olympics and face a tough challenge from England and Canada to top the medal count at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre next week.
Rice, who was on the Gold Coast on Wednesday to help launch The Courier-Mail’s Gold Coast 2018 Exclusive Borobi Pin Collection, said it was hard to predict if Australia would come out on top in the pool, given the rising level of our major rivals.
“There’s a lot of countries going well, I think Canada is doing really well, England are doing amazing,” she said.
“There’s obviously expectations from the media and then there’s your own expectations of yourself.
“Competing in front of a home crowd, you’re probably putting more expectations on yourself because you want to perform well.”
However, she said Australia’s swimmers – in particular the girls, were ready to shine.
“I think our girls are in a great position to step up on a global scale,” said Rice.
“There’s so many great girls coming through and there’s a lot of depth.
“I believe the women are doing more strongly than the men.”
She said The Courier-Mail’s pins collection, which feature Games mascot Borobi getting in to the swing of athletics, swimming, cycling and gymnastics, were a fantastic way for the community to get in to the Games spirit.
“It’s a great way to get behind the athletes,” she said.
“Kids can get right in to it, wear them on their backpack and really show some pride.”
Kids from Somerset College at Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast, members of the Optus Junior Dolphins, a program that encourages young kids to swim, also got in to the spirit with an early glimpse of the pins, which will be available for $ 2 each with a special token from April 4.
Get into the Commonwealth Games spirit with the limited edition Gold Coast 2018 Official Borobi Pin Collection, available via tokens inside The Courier-Mail from Wednesday, April 4. Pin your hopes on the Aussie team and collect all five! Find your stockist at borobipincollection.com.au
The 19-year-old Sydneysider has never competed at such a big event in Australia and the diver admitted she is fluctuating between being daunted and excited.
“I think there will be more pressure. I just have to try and channel that into good energy and not freak out,’’ O’Brien said.
Helping her deal with the additional strain of an expectant home crowd on the Gold Coast next month is Melissa Wu, who was just 13 when she appeared at her first Games in 2006.
Her fellow Australian will also be one of O’Brien’s major medal rivals.
“Obviously there is a rivalry but we also want each other to do really well,” she said.

MORE: Aussie divers cautious competing under lights
Another first for O’Brien at the Commonwealth Games will be competing at an international event at night under lights, which she admits has her “pretty scared’’.
“I’m glad we get the opportunity to practise because some of the other competitors from other countries might not and that will give us a bit of an advantage as well,’’ said O’Brien, who is heading to a camp next month to help acclimatise to the night-time diving
Hubbard finished runner-up in the snatch category in the women’s 90kg-plus division at the event in California, with her best successful lift coming at 124kg.
She finished second to American Olympic bronze medallist Sarah Robles, who lifted 126kg.
Hubbard had a shot at gold when attempting 127kg but she failed to lift the bar completely above her head.
Last month, Hubbard became the first New Zealand transgender athlete to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.
The 39-year-old has a shot at further medals on Wednesday, when the same 10 lifters will contest the clean and jerk category.
Another medal can be claimed from combining the best lifts from both the snatch and clean and jerk.
A former top male lifter, Hubbard has attracted international headlines since making the decision to compete as a woman, something she is entitled to do under International Weightlifting Federation and International Olympic Committee rules.
Her rivals have expressed unease at a perceived advantage, an argument echoed by the Australian Weightlifting Federation after the Commonwealth Games selection was confirmed.
AWF chief executive Michael Keelan said Hubbard’s inclusion in the women’s open class would create an “uneven playing field” on the Gold Coast. “We’re in a power sport which is normally related to masculine tendencies … where you’ve got that aggression, you’ve got the right hormones, then you can lift bigger weights,” he said.
“If you’ve been a male and you’ve lifted certain weights, then you suddenly transition to a female, psychologically you know you’ve lifted those weights before.” Hubbard had to demonstrate her testosterone levels were below a certain threshold for 12 months before representing New Zealand.

DIAMONDS vice-captain Gabi Simpson says the Quad Series that gets under way in Brisbane on Saturday is a significant step towards gold at next year’s Commonwealth Games.
Australia will take on England at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre followed by the clash between New Zealand and South Africa in a Boondall double-header featuring four of the best five netball nations in the world.
The Diamonds have been in camp on the Sunshine Coast all week and the newly appointed vice-captain said the opportunity to go head-to-head with their chief rivals for gold on the Gold Coast was priceless.

“We get to play against and learn all the different styles of netball that are so varied across the different countries.
“More importantly, the Quad Series is a chance for us to start establishing combinations.
“Individually, we have phenomenal players but it’s how we can bring all those strengths together for the best possible team performance.
“We’ve really utilised this camp to get through a lot of work and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Netball: Caitlin Bassett has been named the 24th captain of the Australian Diamonds netball team.
“We have a new defensive end that hasn’t played together so the match play has been vital in putting everything into practice so we can judge where we are at.’’
Simpson said England was strong at both ends of the court and was more than capable of punishing any Australian mistakes.

Thomas Fraser-Holmes ruled out of the Commonwealth Games for missing drug tests. Pics Adam Head
OLYMPIAN Thomas Fraser-Holmes has been handed a 12 month ban by FINA for missing three doping tests and will miss next year’s Commonwealth Games.
Sports lawyer Tim Fuller, who is acting for Fraser-Holmes, will appeal against the world swimming body’s ban immediately to the Court Arbitration for Sport.
Mr Fuller says Fraser-Holmes, a former world No.1 200m freestyler and two-time Olympian, has a ‘clean’ record despite missing three doping tests in 12 months.
Over a three-month period athletes must nominate an hour-long time-slot when they can be tested by FINA and ASADA drugs testers unannounced. Missing a test counts as a ‘strike’ and three strikes within 12 months can lead to a two-year ban from sport.
Swimming Australia’s image has taken a hit in the last month with Fraser-Holmes one of three top Australian swimmers banned or facing bans for missing drug tests.
Rio Olympic silver medallist Madeleine Groves could also face a ban after FINA claims she has missed three doping tests.
Open water swimmer and Rio Olympian Jarrod Poort has three strikes against his name for missing tests is also facing two years out of the pool. Poort could not be reached for comment.
Fraser-Holmes, who is in Monaco set to compete in an international swimming series, is said to be hopeful of defeating his 12-month ban.
“Let us be very clear as to what has eventuated here. Tom Fraser Holmes has not partaken in the ingesting of any prohibited substances. The decision handed down is for a breach of Whereabouts policy,” said Fraser-Holmes’ lawyer Fuller.
“On the matter, it was acknowledged by a number of authorities that the data recording system that Tom was required to use on a daily basis to log his whereabouts was faulty. A technical fault in the system prevented Tom from updating his whereabouts information. Yet, the FINA panel found that he had been ‘negligent’ in this particular area.
“The fact of the matter is that Tom is a swimmer who has reached the highest levels of his sport and has competed clean all of his career. He is an outstanding young man and is of exemplary character and is now facing the prospect of missing a Commonwealth Games in his hometown next year due to this decision.
“In the world of sport, there are countries and numerous athletes that compete dirty and cheat. Tom Fraser-Holmes is not such an athlete and never has been”.
“For the reasons addressed above and others, we will be appealing to the CAS and ultimately asking the Court to set aside the FINA Doping Panel decision and reinstate Tom Fraser-Holmes status as a competitive swimmer”.
Groves’ matter is ongoing and is yet to be heard by FINA. Groves missed her third test in San Diego in California when a FINA drug tester could not locate her on a Sunday afternoon at her accommodation.
