Several of the parties running in the Quebec election say getting everyone a family doctor isn’t a realistic goal. If that’s the case, what is the alternative? We asked doctors to weigh in.

Affirm’s pay-over-time option comes to Canada through Amazon https://briefnews.eu/affirms-pay-over-time-option-comes-to-canada-through-amazon/ https://briefnews.eu/affirms-pay-over-time-option-comes-to-canada-through-amazon/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 14:53:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/affirms-pay-over-time-option-comes-to-canada-through-amazon/ You no longer need to live in the US to use Affirm's buy-now-pay-later services for much of your online shopping. Affirm is expanding to Canada through a partnership with Amazon. Spend $ 50 or more at Amazon.ca and you can choose Affirm's pay-over-time option at checkout to split the bill into monthly payments. As in the States, there aren't any late fees or surprise charges.

The payment option will be available within a month. The Canadian rollout comes roughly two years after Affirm bought local equivalent PayBright — this is effectively a rebranding. Affirm serves Australia as well, but only for people buying Peloton exercise equipment.

This won't help if you prefer to shop beyond Amazon, and might prove expensive if your purchase amount and pay schedule involve significant interest rates (they range from zero to 30 percent, Affirm says). As with a car or house, you're paying more overall to make the price easier to swallow. Still, this could be useful if you can't afford to buy a computer or TV outright and need to spread the costs.

This month, get a great view of Jupiter as it comes its closest in 70 years https://briefnews.eu/this-month-get-a-great-view-of-jupiter-as-it-comes-its-closest-in-70-years/ https://briefnews.eu/this-month-get-a-great-view-of-jupiter-as-it-comes-its-closest-in-70-years/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 20:21:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-month-get-a-great-view-of-jupiter-as-it-comes-its-closest-in-70-years/ Widely considered our solar system’s most beautiful planet, Jupiter will reach opposition this month. That means Jupiter will be at its closest point to Earth, offering excellent views of this natural wonder. Jupiter’s opposition happens every 13 months, but this opposition is a special one as the planet will make its closest approach to Earth in 70 years.

When looking from Earth at a planet like Jupiter, the distance between the two planets will be shortest when the planets are in opposition. This means that Earth is directly between the sun and Jupiter, so as the sun sets in the west, Jupiter rises in the east. That’s the 13-month cycle of a typical opposition, but this opposition is unusual.

This photo of Jupiter, taken from the Hubble Space Telescope on June 27, 2019, features the Giant Red Spot, a storm the size of Earth that has been raging for hundreds of years.
This photo of Jupiter, taken from the Hubble Space Telescope on June 27, 2019, features the Giant Red Spot, a storm the size of Earth that has been raging for hundreds of years. NASA, ESA, A. Simon (Goddard Space Flight Center), and M.H. Wong (University of California, Berkeley)

That’s because all of the planets in the solar system orbit around the sun, but although these orbits are roughly circular they are not perfectly so. That means there are some times when they are closer to the sun (the closest point is called the perihelion), and some times when they are further away (with the further point called the aphelion). From our point of view, there are times when the orbit of Jupiter comes closer to Earth and times when it is more distant.

This month will see the opposition event coincide with Jupiter’s closest approach, with Jupiter coming within 365 million miles of Earth — as opposed to the 600 million miles of distance at its farthest point. That makes the next few weeks a great time for stargazers to look to Jupiter.

The closest approach will be throughout the night of Monday, September 26, but according to NASA astrophysicist Adam Kobelski, there will be great views before and after this date. “The views should be great for a few days before and after Sept. 26,” Kobelski said. “So, take advantage of good weather on either side of this date to take in the sight. Outside of the Moon, it should be one of the (if not the) brightest objects in the night sky.”

Those who have access to a telescope or binoculars should be able to get a great view of not only Jupiter but also its moons, according to astronomy site EarthSky.

“With good binoculars, the banding (at least the central band) and three or four of the Galilean satellites (moons) should be visible,” Kobelski advised. “It’s important to remember that Galileo observed these moons with 17th-century optics. One of the key needs will be a stable mount for whatever system you use.”

William Gibson’s novel comes to vivid life in first teaser for The Peripheral https://briefnews.eu/william-gibsons-novel-comes-to-vivid-life-in-first-teaser-for-the-peripheral/ https://briefnews.eu/william-gibsons-novel-comes-to-vivid-life-in-first-teaser-for-the-peripheral/#respond Thu, 08 Sep 2022 16:54:50 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/william-gibsons-novel-comes-to-vivid-life-in-first-teaser-for-the-peripheral/

Prime Video’s new sci-fi series The Peripheral is based on William Gibson’s novel.

A young woman struggling to hold it together in small-town America finds herself witness to what may or may not be a murder in the first teaser for The Peripheral, a new Prime Video series based on William Gibson’s 2014 novel of the same name.

(Spoilers for the novel below.)

The novel is in many ways vintage Gibson: a bleak, dystopian future world chock-full of big thematic ideas, visionary technology, and its own slang terminology. The reader is plunged into this setting and must acclimate accordingly; Gibson isn’t interested in presenting everything to us on a silver platter. But that initial effort pays off as the novel evolves into an action-packed cyberpunk thriller.

Legacies EP on What Rafael’s Premiere Discovery Really Means: ‘He’s Always Wondered Where He Comes From’ https://briefnews.eu/legacies-ep-on-what-rafaels-premiere-discovery-really-means-hes-always-wondered-where-he-comes-from/ https://briefnews.eu/legacies-ep-on-what-rafaels-premiere-discovery-really-means-hes-always-wondered-where-he-comes-from/#respond Fri, 22 Jan 2021 05:07:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/legacies-ep-on-what-rafaels-premiere-discovery-really-means-hes-always-wondered-where-he-comes-from/

RELATED STORIES

For the second time in a row, Legacies kicked off a new season with Hope out of commission, leaving her classmates to scramble like headless chickens — angsty, magical headless chickens.

With the threat of Wednesday Addams Dark Josie finally behind them, the students of the Salvatore School attempted to piece together their fractured community on Thursday with some good ol’ fashioned physical fitness. (Seriously, why did Alaric think that a field day would solve anything? These kids were better off when fake Professor Vardemus was in charge.)

As predicted, the field day was a complete disaster — like, almost apocalyptically bad — though not for the reasons we all assumed. You see, Chad accidentally summoned a new Malivore monster named Nimue (aka the Lady of the Lake), followed by a skull-crushing baddie called the “Green Knight,” both of whom sought the fabled sword Excalibur. Nimue explained that only a “worthy” warrior could wield the blade against the Green Knight, but she conveniently forgot to clarify that “worthy” meant being born of a royal blood line.

After multiple failed attempts to remove the sword from the stone — including a cathartic two-person effort, courtesy of the Saltzman twins — Rafael showed up, yanked the legendary metal from its stone sheath, and plunged Excalibur into the Green Knight’s gross head. Apocalypse averted!

Meanwhile, the Necromancer spent the hour attempting to force Landon’s soul back into his physical body, which was the only way he could receive all the tasty black magic he so desperately craves. (Question for the group: If you didn’t rewatch the Season 2 finale, were you struggling to follow some of these rules?) Landon eventually did reclaim his body, but only to wake Hope up with a kiss; she surmised that her body must have sensed Landon was “dead,” so it just let her keep sleeping. (While we’re glad to see Hope conscious again, that resolution felt a little… convenient. Like when Bonnie suddenly broke Elena’s sleeping curse in the Vampire Diaries series finale without breaking a sweat, making us wonder why she didn’t just do it sooner.)

Then… one last twist! Chad and Alyssa, who formally joined “Team Monster” after Lizzie publicly shamed her for murdering her own parents (rude!), were taking a stroll in the woods, when Chad suddenly vomited black goo and died. Desperate to avoid meeting that same fate, Alyssa pledged her allegiance to the Necromancer, formally becoming his “eternal acolyte.”

Below, executive producer Brett Matthews answers a few of TVLine’s burning questions about the Season 3 premiere, including whether we might finally see Caroline back at the Salvatore School:

TVLINE | Rafael being of royal descent was a twist I didn’t see coming. Is this the beginning of a new journey for him?
This episode was really about the Super Squad banding together in Hope’s absence, so that moment for Raf was obviously a very big one. Raf’s journey through the first couple of seasons has always been about family. As a foster child, he’s always wondered where he comes from, and finding out that he’s connected to a royal blood line is an unexpected answer to that question. So he’s finally beginning to discover all of the things he’s always wanted to know about himself, including his family origins. He really felt like the perfect person to come in and save the day.

TVLINE | This is the second season that started with Hope out of commission and everyone having to pick up the slack. Was that intentional?
[Laughs] Well, the first couple episodes of this season were meant to go at the end of Season 2, so there was going to be a recurring theme there. You can kind of see where we intended to end the second season. We’ve gone back in and reworked some of those episodes a little bit. It was a unique experience that we all hope we never have to do again. I was just finishing the script for Episode 20 when we pulled the plug. You’ll definitely see the bones of where Season 2 would have ended; we think of the first four episodes as the “first chapter” of Season 3.

TVLINE | Josie wants to spend some time with Caroline, I have to ask the question I ask every season: Any chance we’ll see Candice King?
Our answer is still the same, and you’re probably sick of hearing it, but the door is always open to Candice. We love her and think so highly of her, and we love Caroline Forbes so much. We would be thrilled [to have her back], but it’s really up to her. We’d love to have the challenge of figuring out how Caroline fits into Legacies, be that for an episode or an arc or whatever. But it obviously depends on her schedule and the opportunities she’s pursuing in her career. While Legacies is very much a show that’s doing its own thing, it’s built upon the legacies of the other shows — hence the title being what it is — so we’d love that.

TVLINE | Now for the question on everyone’s mind: Is Chad really gone? Death tends to be pretty fluid in this universe.
Death is pretty fluid, but at the same time, it did feel like a tragic end to Chad. He’s a small character, but he definitely grew on us. I don’t know if we’ll ever see Chad again, but he’s pretty definitely dead at the end of this episode. His impact on the Necromancer will be felt moving forward. He will live on in other ways.

BBC reporter comes under fire from The One Show fans over face mask: ‘Not a chin warmer!’ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-reporter-comes-under-fire-from-the-one-show-fans-over-face-mask-not-a-chin-warmer/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-reporter-comes-under-fire-from-the-one-show-fans-over-face-mask-not-a-chin-warmer/#respond Tue, 12 Jan 2021 20:18:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-reporter-comes-under-fire-from-the-one-show-fans-over-face-mask-not-a-chin-warmer/

The One Show returned to BBC One this evening with Alex Jones and Amol Rajan at the helm. The two were joined by celebrity guests Julia Bradbury and Rhod Gilbert, but it was a segment from BBC reporter Owain Wyn Evans which had a number of viewers talking. As the reporter headed to Wrexham, Wales to discuss the latest lockdown and coronavirus guidelines with members of the public, several viewers were left fuming when the presenter appeared to move the face mask to below his chin, prompting one viewer to fume: “It is NOT a chin warmer!”

The moment in question came when reporter Owain spoke to a member of the public: “Do you find that other people are sticking to the rules in the same way as you are?”

“Generally speaking yes, yes they are,” the man replied, prompting The One Show presenter to continue: “And how are you finding sticking to those rules?”

“It is difficult,” the member of the public replied. “There are things that you can do, coming into town and having a quick coffee.”

“Well, I won’t let your coffee get cold, enjoy it,” Owain signed off – but it wasn’t the chat itself which caught the eye of BBC viewers.

One fan expressed their dismay on Twitter, saying: “Can not believe you sent that reporter to Wrexham which has the highest rate in North Wales, he then did what really grates on me and had his mask on his chin! It is NOT a chin warmer!!! #TheOneShow.”

A second agreed: “@theoneshow your reporter shouldn’t have been wearing his mask under his chin!”

“#theoneshow Your reporter should not wear his mask as a chin sling. Pulling a mask up and down is bad mask etiquette and can cause infection,” added a third.

While a fourth also weighed in: “Your reporter shouldn’t have had his mask underneath his chin! That’s a big no-no! #TheOneShow.”

Moments after introducing comedian Rhod Gilbert, Amol enquired about how he’s been adapting to the new way of life.

“Have you done your daily exercise today, mate?” Amol asked, prompting Rhod to reply: “Err, walking counts right?”

The One Show hosts agreed as Rhod joked he was nearing 10,000 steps before Amol asked whether the comedian had spotted any rule-breakers.

“When you went on your within-the-rules walk, did you notice people sticking to the rules broadly speaking?

“Did you see people out and about breaking the rules or are people doing what they’re meant to be doing, do you think?”

Rhod hastily shut down The One Show host as he sarcastically replied back: “You asking me to dob people in live, are you?”

Amol let out a laugh before Rhod clarified he felt people were behaving “sensibly” amid rumours restrictions are going to be tightened.

The One Show continues weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.

The Bachelor Season 25 Premiere Recap: Love Comes in All Flavors https://briefnews.eu/the-bachelor-season-25-premiere-recap-love-comes-in-all-flavors/ https://briefnews.eu/the-bachelor-season-25-premiere-recap-love-comes-in-all-flavors/#respond Tue, 05 Jan 2021 05:54:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-bachelor-season-25-premiere-recap-love-comes-in-all-flavors/

RELATED STORIES

After 25 seasons and nearly 19 years on the air, The Bachelor kicked off its latest season Monday night with the first eligible Black man to ever look for love on the beloved ABC series.

Matt James, a commercial real estate broker, says that after spending too many hours alone quarantined during the pandemic, he realized it was time to share his life with someone.

To help him find the right stay-at-home soulmate, producers wrangled up 32 Black, white, brown and Asian women from all walks of life. Despite the inclusiveness of the contestants, Matt, 28, says he feels a lot of pressure to pick the right woman for cultural reasons.

“People want you to end up with a certain type of person. I get that,” Matt tells host Chris Harrison at the start of the show, before the ladies arrive. “My mom is white and my dad is Black, and I experienced what it was like to be a product of an interracial marriage.”

Matt says more than anything he doesn’t want to disappoint viewers, even though he likely will no matter what. “It’s tough because you’ve got people who have certain views, old school views, on what a relationship and love look like,” he adds. “You’ve got people who are cheering for you to find love and you’ve got people who are cheering for you to end up with a specific person of a specific race.”

“That’s something that kept me up at night,” Matt continues. “I don’t want to piss off Black people. I don’t want to piss off white people. But I’m both of those. How do I please everybody?”

Khaylah arrived with a serious “pick-up” line

Unfortunately for Matt and the nearly three dozen women on this incarnation of The Bachelor – and for that matter, in every season – disappointment and rejection are a given. Dude can’t choose them all. He did however seem to have a connection with some contestants more than others. Early frontrunners include Khaylah, a 28-year-old healthcare advocate who, like Matt, hails from North Carolina. Khaylah grabbed Matt’s attention by pulling up in a pickup truck and later having a picnic for two in the cargo bed.

Meanwhile, Kaili, 26, a hostess from Chicago, caught Matt’s eye by showing up in lingerie and asking the former college basketball star to pick one of two dresses she had hanging on a rack.

The gaggle also included a woman in goat slippers (Saneh, 25, an IT consultant from Denver) and another delivering a pizza (MJ, 23, a hairstylist from Ohio).

Bachelor Recap Matt James

Katie’s pet Rabbit got blurred out on TV

Of course there always is a villain, and this season it’s Victoria, 27, a self-described “Queen” from Los Angeles. Katie, 29, a banker from Washington state, also rubbed some of the other women the wrong way by waving around the, um, vibrator that kept her company in quarantine. She even tapped Mari, 24, on the shoulder with the contraption — much to the former Puerto Rican beauty contestant’s chagrin.

But in the end, the First Impression Rose went to Abigail, 25, a delightful and dimpled Oregon native who was born deaf and works in finance. After a deep conversation about being vulnerable, the two kissed and Matt gave her the coveted flower. And there were more roses to be delved out as Matt chose 23 more contenders including Victoria (Seriously? Can you say “the producers’ choice”!) and Bri, a communications manager from San Francisco who is also biracial.

What’s your early take on Matt, who was of course a contender on the most recent season of The Bachelorette, and his early picks?

During the series’ earlier instalments, Lucifer was desperate to make a connection with his estranged father, the Creator of the Universe himself, God.

After years of refusing to answer his son’s prayers, God will finally make his physical debut on the show played by 24’s original President Dennis Haysbert.

Dennis will reunite with his former 24 co-star D. B. Woodside, who portrays God’s oldest angelic son, Amenadiel, after playing President David Palmer’s brother and Chief of Staff Wayne Palmer for the popular thriller.

During an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lucifer series regular Lesley-Ann Brandt gushed about working with the presidential star for season five.

Manifest Wedding Photo Album: Here Comes the Bride…. Right?? https://briefnews.eu/manifest-wedding-photo-album-here-comes-the-bride-right/ https://briefnews.eu/manifest-wedding-photo-album-here-comes-the-bride-right/#respond Wed, 25 Mar 2020 14:55:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/manifest-wedding-photo-album-here-comes-the-bride-right/ After so much Sturm und Drang, NBC’s Manifest is poised to host a joyous celebration, as glimpsed in these first photos from Season 2’s penultimate hour.

Manifest 2x12 WeddingWhen last we tuned into the supernatural-tinged family drama, Zeke — on the heels of a most unexpected yet closure-delivering reunion with his estranged father — reasserted to Michaela that he has no intention of resuming treatment by Saanvi, to maybe stave off his Death Date. “Pretty much my entire life has been about regret and sadness. But I don’t want to end it like that,” he said. “I want to go out on my terms, with the love of my life, making one more memory I can take with me.” And on that note, he whipped out a shiny ring. “Will you marry me, Michaela?” he asked. After a moment of shock, Mick replied, “Yes! Yes, I will.”

In the next episode, titled “Call Sign” and airing Monday, March 30 at 10/9c, Ben & Co. transform the Stone household into an ersatz wedding venue. Among the exclusive photos obtained by TVLine, we see Michaela take in her brother’s handiwork, alongside a beaming Grace. Below, we spy a moment between Zeke and Jared — will Mick’s previous fiance offer his blessing? And in the photo above right, the groom awaits his bride.

But will the wedding go off without a hitch?

After all, elsewhere in the episode, Jared and Drea will attempt to extract a confession from Jace, Pete and Kory, the trio of meth dealers we just met who would do anything to exact revenge on Michaela. Also, Saanvi will enlist help in protecting herself from the until-recently dormant Major.

Looking ahead to Manifest‘s second season finale (airing April 6), showrunner Jeff Rake told TVLine, “The strength of Ben and Grace’s marriage and partnership will be tested … more than it has been since we first met them. As will the friendship between brother and sister Ben and Michaela. The s–t is going to hit the fan.”

Nia Nal has something to tell the world on Sunday’s Supergirl (The CW, 8/7c) — and the world is listening. The episode, appropriately titled “American Dreamer,” finds Nia stepping up as National City’s No. 1 protector while Kara works to clear the Girl of Steel’s good name. And as you’ll see in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek, part of being the face of heroism means having to face the press.

“My parents believed that humans and aliens could co-exist, and I’m living proof of that,” Dreamer says in an on-camera interview with Kara. “But growing up wasn’t easy. I’m also a trans woman. I’m different, Ms. Danvers, but so is everybody. And I don’t know when that became such a bad thing. The greatest gift we can give each other is our authentic selves, and sharing that — sharing our truth — is what will make us strong.”

Elsewhere in the episode, which marks David Harewood’s directorial debut: Dreamer has a “showdown” with Ben Lockwood, and “James takes drastic measures to relieve his PTSD.”
