  • Netflix has given a big boost to some of the world’s highest-paid comedians.
  • The majority of the comedians on Forbes’ annual list have worked with Netflix this year or last, from Jerry Seinfeld to Chris Rock. 

 

Netflix has focused on stand-up comedy the last few years, and will even debut 47 new stand-up specials on New Year’s Day.

Many comedians have seen big paydays thanks to Netflix, and that’s evident in Forbes’ list of the year’s highest-paid comedians in the world, which was released this week. 

The majority of the comedians on the list have starred in Netflix specials this year or last, such as Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle.

Gabriel Iglesias released a Netflix special in 2016 called “I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry,” and will star in another sometime in 2019 called “One Show Fits All.” Sebastian Maniscalco will also star in a special on Netflix that premieres January 15, called “Stay Hungry.”

Forbes made the list based on estimated, pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018. Below are the top 10, with those who starred in Netflix specials this year or last in bold:

Netflix released Gaffigan’s fifth special last year, called “Cinco.” This year, he passed on Netflix to release a new special, “Noble Ape,” to a variety of on-demand services because it would be  “available to everyone at the same time,” he told Business Insider in August. “You didn’t just have to have Netflix.”

Ricky Gervais — $ 25 million

Netflix

This year, Netflix released Gervais’ first special in seven years, called “Humanity.” Forbes estimates that he made $ 15 million for “Humanity.”

Next month will mark two years since we lost comedian Garry Shandling all too soon at the age of 66. But rather than stewing about it this whole time, director Judd Apatow decided to pay tribute to the comedian who brought us fantastic stand-up comedy, The Larry Sanders Show, and a memorable senator turned Hydra agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And he did it with a film.

The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling is a new documentary coming to HBO from director Judd Apatow. And since Apatow has a long history with some of the greatest names in comedy, the line-up of talking heads you’ll see in this Garry Shandling documentary trailer is impressive as hell. Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien are just some of the talents who turned up to remember Shandling’s life and comedic legacy.

This new documentary is also filled with archival footage from Shandling’s various television appearances over his 40-year career. Apatow had access to plenty of the comedian’s personal journals, private letters, home videos and much more. Some of the other famous faces making appearances include James L. Brooks, Sacha Baron Cohen, David Coulier, Jon Favreau, Kevin Nealon, Bob Saget, Sarah Silverman and more.

This is especially personal because Shandling was a mentor to Apatow long before he became a successful filmmaker. Apatow was learning from Shandling back while he was still doing stand-up and hanging around with a young Adam Sandler. This is exactly the kind of documentary that a comedy nerd like me never gets tired of seeing. It’s bittersweet since Shandling is no longer with us, but it’s such a loving, intimate, eye-opening look into his mind and heart, the good and the bad.

Facebook has turned its politically correct ire on dozens of female comedians who, sardonically or otherwise, referred to men as either “trash” or “scum” – an act which the tech giant now considers a form of hate speech.

The comments were not directed or targeted toward any specific men but were instead responses to alleged harassment they had received online. Whether these were genuinely held beliefs, simple hyperbole or knee-jerk reactions to genuine harassment has yet to be determined. Facebook’s policy simply bans offending users for a period of up to 30 days for a first-time “hate speech” offense.

“I personally posted men are scum in November and I received a seven-day ban. It’s still ongoing. Two days and 23 hours left,” said comedian Alison Klemp, as cited by The Daily Beast. Men are now considered a protected class on the social media platform, according to a report by ProRepublica.

Following discussion of the issue of “Facebook jailing” in a private group of roughly 500 female comedians on the platform, the women staged a mass protest on November 24 by posting some iteration of “men are scum” to their Facebook timelines. Almost all were subsequently banned.

Comedian Marcia Belsky has previously, and publicly, declared a ‘war on men,’ but this appears to fall under the realm of satire or comedy as far as Facebook is concerned. Belsky is one of the most vocal critics of Facebook’s haphazard approach to censoring alleged, but ill-defined, hate speech.

Despite her pugnacious rhetoric, she does not, it would appear, think all men are scum.

Her comedic contemporary Kayla Avery holds far stronger views on the hate speech crackdown, however. Avery has set up both a website and a Twitter handle for women to share the Facebook jailings online. “Facebook is scum and bans women & people of color to protect men,” reads the Twitter bio. Avery also alleges that Facebook is a white supremacist institution.

Facebook, and other social media giants, have long-grappled with the concept of free speech versus the right to refuse service to any and all users they deem disruptive.

Now, so-called ‘alt-right’ trolls such as Milo Yiannopoulos, feminist activists and comedians and even the President of United States Donald Trump are subject to the whims of Zuckerberg’s and Dorsey’s army of anti-hate speech police, however low-level they may be within the respective companies.

For context, Facebook alone has hired 7,000 content moderators to surveil its estimated 2 billion users. The company is deliberately obtuse when describing, but never defining, its rules and guidelines surrounding hate speech infractions.

“We remove content, disable accounts and work with law enforcement when we believe that there is a genuine risk of physical harm or direct threats to public safety. Learn more about how Facebook handles abusive content,” the company wrote on its community standards page.

At present, in the US at least, there is no overarching definition of hate speech, making it purely subjective, observational and subject to change depending on which way the cultural wind is blowing.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry optimistically discussed expanding American coal exports to Ukraine and other energy matters during a lengthy phone call this month with a Russian prankster who Perry thought was Ukraine’s prime minister.

Perry actually was talking with comedians known in Russia for targeting celebrities and politicians with audacious stunts, Energy Department spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes said in a written statement.

Pranksters Vladimir Krasnov and Alexei Stolyarov are sometimes called the “Jerky Boys of Russia,” after an American duo who put out recordings of their prank phone calls in the 1990s.

They have made faux calls to British singer Elton John, who thought he was speaking to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and others.

“These individuals are known for pranking high-level officials and celebrities, particularly those who are supportive of an agenda that is not in line with their governments. In this case, the energy security of Ukraine,” Hynes said.

During the 22-minute call on July 19, Perry, whose department oversees the U.S. nuclear weapons program, discussed a range of topics in a business-like tone, including sanctions against Russia and helping Ukraine develop oil and gas.

Perry said the Trump administration opposes Nord Stream 2, a Russian project to bring natural gas to Europe across the Baltic and that U.S. technology could help Ukraine develop gas.

“Giving Ukraine more options with some of our technology is, I think, in everyone’s best interest with the exception of the Russians, but that’s OK,” he said. Perry also discussed the Paris climate accord and coal exports on the call.

The call, first reported by E&E news, was recorded and posted online.

It happened about a month after Perry met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and his delegation at the Energy Department.

President Donald Trump said last month that Washington plans to offer Ukraine more coal exports from the United States because the eastern European nation’s industrial sector has difficulty securing coal from separatist-held regions.

It is unclear how the United States would bring more coal to Ukraine but Perry hinted on the call that the Commerce Department was working on it.

“The coal conversation at this particular point in time is with (Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross) and I full well suspect it will go forward,” he said on the call.

News of the call came the same day the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impose new sanctions on Russia.

One was made by Spike Lee; another, by John Ridley. One of those films was not, however, by Donald Trump’s advisor in all things white nationalist, Steve Bannon. In fact, the last person whose opinion about the L.A. riots that anyone who remotely cares about social justice — or film, for that matter — would want hear is probably Steve fucking Bannon.

But, as Daniel Pollack-Pelzner divulged last December in the New York Times, Bannon actually did have something to say about this violently tense moment in Los Angeles history — and he said it in the form of a screenplay for a hip-hop musical based on Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. That film — shocker — never got made. However, NowThis recently got ahold of the screenplay, The Thing I Am, in its entirety, and put on a reading of it, which was then published by the Washington Post. It is — another shocker — utterly weird, particularly in its pairing of Bannon’s approximations of florid Shakespearean language and gangsta speech — replete with n-bombs, f-bombs, and “bitch, please”s.

When I was in elementary school, I participated in a kid-friendly adaptation of West Side Story, in which I had to sing a Barbara Streisand song to two groups of tensely competitive surfers. Bannon’s script, I’d say, is slightly less good than that.

Interestingly, Bannon and his co-author, Julia Jones, had attempted to sell the story as an exploration of “how the culture of greed, elitism, discrimination and inhumanity repeats itself today in a self-defeating replay of atrocities.” (It was Jones who provided a copy of the script to NowThis.) Like many who seek to stretch Shakespeare to fit specific, contemporary political climates, Bannon applied the plot of the rarely performed Coriolanus — about the clash between the Romans and Vorsicans — to early ’90s L.A., seen as a war zone between the Bloods and the Cripps. Some examples of the dialogue:

“You call him noble that was once your enemy, then dis your king.”

“They hang out shooting pool and think they know what’s going down. Who’s out, who bounds, and if there’s crack enough.”

“Abandon hope all ye who fuck with her.”

The script is also filled with ridiculous descriptions meant to sound edgy in their anachronism, like, “Agrippa rides up to the entrance. Two Cripp guards stand watch.”

The Post writes, “Coriolanus’ rise and downfall in The Thing I Am present him as someone who could stop the violence in his own community but is temperamentally incapable of making the compromises and taking the strong stands necessary to do so.” The paper equates these strong stands with threats like Trump’s own warnings to black communities with high crime rates — his Tweeted threats to send the National Guard into Chicago, for instance.

Williams, one of a few select actors interviewed for the Post article, said of Bannon’s take on early ’90s L.A., “I think Steve Bannon thought he had figured out black people, much in the way of Trump: ‘Carnage! Chicago is carnage! … American carnage! That I have the answer. That if you could listen to me, this can fix that.’”

If you have 20 minutes, it’s certainly worth a watch — beyond its relevance to Bannon’s current political life, this is also simply the unearthing of an embarrassingly bad piece of writing. Since it’s being read by a group of actors who mostly work in comedy, it also happens to be very funny. NowThis recruited a huge cast: Gary Anthony Williams (who plays Coriolanus), Reno 911!’s Cedric Yarborough, Whose Line…? recurring cast-member Nyima Funk, Jordan Black, MadTV‘s Daniele Gaither, John Henson, Danny Zuker, Ishmel Sahid, Tawny Newsome, AJ Crew, Ellie Rose Boswell, Ify Nwadiwe, Kate Berlant (who spoke with Flavorwire about politicized comedy not too long ago), Parvesh Cheena, Morgan Evans, Charlie Carver, Lucas Neff, and former Daily Show correspondent Robert William Corddry.
