Level 99 Axe Rage is a mixture of B-Movies and classic sidescrollers, aiming to have players fight against zombie, alien, and machine threats using an axe, an acrobatic protagonist, and his dog pal.

Players will work through stage after stage of various threats, running the gamut of sci-fi invaders with just the axe in their hand and a bottomless anger. The game’s hero can really put that axe to work, too, offering several different kinds of combos that will send enemies flying, ready to get juggled even further by a skilled player. The enemies are equally skilled at times, though, so players will need to slide, wall jump, and keep themselves moving forward if they want to life to meet the next thing they want to chop up. Luckily, your dog pal might hop in to help from time to time.

Players will get a little tougher over the course of their journey, finding handy items buried in out-of-the-way cubbyholes that will increase their powers, giving them an extra edge against whatever monster happens to be fighting them this time. Overall, though, players can expect a constant barrage of over-the-top, kind silly moments from Level 99 Axe Rage, promising a fun journey for lovers of classic, challenging sidescrollers.

Level 99 Axe Rage is available for $ 24.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Master Uomu, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Of all the ways players taunt each other in fighting games, there’s no taunt as stylish as the trumpet solos that players can pull off in Skullgirls.

Players can perform as police-officer-turned-brass-instrument “Big Band” and have used him to play an impressive array of songs, from James Bond’s theme to “Song of Storms” from The Legend of Zelda, in between beating up their opponents.

A taunt is any move that doesn’t necessarily deal physical damage to your opponent, but instead serves as a performative show of power and finesse. Taunts are usually low-effort moves. In many games, they require just one button-press to perform. These moves are controversial since they seem to only exist to make other players feel demoralized. Shouldn’t fighting games encourage honor between players as opposed to mockery?

Big Band’s trumpet taunts serve as an exception, since they require a level of musical finesse that even the sorest loser should appreciate. Players have been doing impressive things with them since the character got added to Skullgirls in 2014. Unlike most one-button taunts, Big Band’s multi-note trumpet solos demand as much advanced practice to pull off as any other fighting game combo. Plus, the trumpet solo encourages player creativity and improvisation, since players can compose their own musical beatdowns ahead of time or freestyle on the spot.

All of Big Band’s attacks in Skullgirls involve music, and most of them play super-powered notes from his various instrumental appendages. His standing medium punch pulls out a trumpet to play one note. Pressing other buttons allows Big Band’s trumpet to play a full chromatic scale. Pressing up and down as you play notes will allow for octave-switching, as well.

That’s how you wind up with a player dropping a rendition of the Super Mario Bros. “Game Over” theme near the very end of a match, like so:

According to Big Band trumpet tutorials, like this one written by a bassoonist, the light, medium, and heavy button inputs line up similarly to the orientation of the three valves on the trumpet.

Here’s a notation chart, for those hoping to compose Big Band songs:

C – Heavy punch

C#/Db – Light punch + medium punch + heavy punch

D – Light punch + Heavy punch

D#/Eb – Medium punch + Heavy punch

E – Light punch + Medium punch

F – Light punch

F#/Gb – Medium punch

G – Heavy kick

G#/Ab – Medium Kick + Heavy Kick

A – Light kick + Medium kick

A#/Bb – Light kick

B – Medium kick

When’s the best time to bust out into sweet song? Start up Big Band’s Satchmo Solo move with a fully-charged Dramatic Tension bar (the super move meter in Skullgirls). Partway through, you’ll get a seven-second opportunity to play a musical solo of your choice. The game subtly encourages players to learn the Skullgirls theme, because Big Band always plays the first four notes of this theme when this combo starts. However, players have chosen to learn tons of other songs to play during the middle of the combo instead:

Big Band can fire up his trumpet at any time during the game, not just in the middle of the Satchmo Solo, but the Satchmo Solo safely allows for a lengthy musical solo in the middle, plus safe ways to combo out of the move. If players want to play another full song during a match, they usually fire off a quick solo at the very end of a battle, while standing over their knocked-out opponent.

There’s no in-game benefit to doing any of this, since these trumpet solos deal negligible damage. It’s just a flashy way to show off while playing as Big Band.

Over the past couple of years, Skullgirls players have been learning increasingly impressive songs to play on the trumpet in the game. It’s a big challenge to play a song during the seven-second time limit in the Satchmo Solo, but players also enjoy refining Big Band’s trumpet skills while in training mode with infinite time to jam:

Few fighting games have attempted anything as creative as Skullgirls’ trumpet solo opportunities for Big Band. R. Mika’s monologuing and mic drop taunt in Street Fighter V feels similar, since it has the same sense of performative fun, but there’s no room for improvisation (if only!).

Street Fighter V Fans Are Proving Akuma Sucks By Obliterating Him In Two Combos https://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-v-fans-are-proving-akuma-sucks-by-obliterating-him-in-two-combos/ https://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-v-fans-are-proving-akuma-sucks-by-obliterating-him-in-two-combos/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 16:41:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-v-fans-are-proving-akuma-sucks-by-obliterating-him-in-two-combos/

The latest goal for the fighting game community is simple: kill Akuma in Street Fighter V using just two combos.

The challenge began last Friday when a player named Javits Arias posted a Tweet, asking his fellow competitors to deplete Akuma’s health

Arias wanted players to start the first combo with a jump-in attack and the second with a light punch or kick. Arias’ public challenge came on the heels of achieving the kill himself with Chun-Li, a difficult sequence that, he says, took three hours of practice to squeeze out the last of Akuma’s 875 hit points.

There’s nothing the fighting game community loves more than challenges, whether it’s a post-tournament call-out or maybe a call for players with performing a unique combo or dealing a certain amount of damage to celebrate a couple’s wedding. In finding ways to quickly defeat Akuma and show them off to the world, players would be able to cleverly highlight the flaws of a character that’s failed to make a serious mark on competition.

The fighting game community quickly answered Arias’ challenge, inundating social media with dozens of videos showcasing their findings. The folks at Frame Data V, for instance, found that newcomer Necalli only needs half a bar of super meter to mete out justice against Akuma.

David Le showed how Ken’s uppercut-heavy offense can drain Akuma’s life in the blink of an eye.

By using the time Akuma is stunned to build additional meter, BlaQNYC was able to gain access to Karin’s devastating Critical Art, leaving the heiress laughing haughtily as the demonic fighter crumpled behind her.

Ibuki has been making a splash on the competitive scene, and MattTrixism shows how the teenage ninja can use her ample kunai supply to put Akuma down.

Olaf Redland took up the challenge with Street Fighter V’s latest character, Kolin, demonstrating the usefulness of her freezing mechanic in the process.

Even F.A.N.G, the oddball cast member who isn’t typically seen as a powerhouse, is able to pull of this feat, as Steven Shao shared in the tweet below.

While none of these situations are 100% guaranteed to succeed in high-level spaces, they shine a light on an issue quietly bubbling up in competitive Street Fighter V play.

Ever since his 1994 debut as a hidden boss in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Akuma has been the perfect fighting game equivalent of the “glass cannon” archetype, capable of outputting tremendous offense but easily shattered in terms of health. This quality followed Akuma into Street Fighter V, a detail that’s accentuated by the fact many of the game’s characters can inflict significant pain.

In their next update, slated for the end of April, Capcom is planning to address this problem by increasing Akuma’s health by 25, but some players believe that’s insufficient. During a recent livestream, high-level Japanese competitor Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi expressed his concerns after a particularly brutal online thrashing at the hands of Balrog, one of the hardest-hitting characters in the Street Fighter V roster. He said that he likely would have died even with the life boost.

This puts the developers in something of a pickle. Do they continue to increase Akuma’s health, abandoning the character’s glass cannon legacy? Or do they make wider changes to the amount of damage the rest of the cast is capable of producing?

Street Fighter V has proven to be an ever-evolving game, even with the competitive season already in full swing, and Capcom’s decisions after the upcoming April patch will no doubt have implications for the rest of the year. Until then, the community will keep coming up with ways to kill Akuma and, hopefully, find ways for the evil brawler to avoid a quick end.

Street Fighter II Wizard Discovers New Combos 26 Years After Release https://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-ii-wizard-discovers-new-combos-26-years-after-release/ https://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-ii-wizard-discovers-new-combos-26-years-after-release/#respond Fri, 24 Mar 2017 15:20:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/street-fighter-ii-wizard-discovers-new-combos-26-years-after-release/

Players have had 26 years to break down Street Fighter II to its most base components, but it turns out there’s still more to discover in the legendary video game. Using a glitch that affects how the character Vega recovers from a fall, a YouTuber has figured out how to pull off some new combos in this classic game.

The combos appear in a new video posted by Desk, a prolific YouTuber responsible for some of the fighting game community’s craziest combo videos. These exhibitions typically highlight the potential of various gameplay systems and are a way for people to show off their skills and things they’ve found in a game.

In Street Fighter II, a character who is knocked down temporarily becomes invincible as they rise to their feet. This isn’t the case for Vega (who is known as Balrog in Japan) in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, the game’s original arcade release. Due to a bug discovered back in the ‘90s, Vega’s hitbox returns during this animation, allowing players to hit him off the ground (or OTG) while he is still laying down and deal further damage that wouldn’t be possible on other characters

In the new video, Desk exploits that bug to pull off some incredible combos. His findings include infinites (meaning they could theoretically go on forever with perfect execution) based solely around each character’s sweep attack. He also found combos that give him enough time to jump in-between attacks, many of which haven’t been explored this extensively in the past.

There’s a reason it took so long for anyone to find these combos and put them in a video despite the glitch being common knowledge for so long. Pulling off these new combos isn’t as easy as it looks, because Street Fighter II is a surprisingly unpredictable game. Due to modifiers like damage ranges, frame-specific player inputs, and even the game clock, it can be pretty damn random for a highly-regarded competitive fighting game. The presence of variable damage and dizzy requirements make recreating combo scenarios a nightmare. Desk also had to deal with the fact that Vega wasn’t playable until 1992’s Champion Edition update, forcing him to face the boss character in World Warriors as a computer-controlled opponent and manipulate the artificial intelligence into beneficial situations. He even employed a somewhat controversial technique to ensure the Zangief combo worked, noting:

The post-stun teabagging is actually luck manipulation. I completed that combo exactly as you see it in the video somewhere in the region of 40-50 times. However, the final version is only the second that caused stun on the crouching heavy kick (vital for the SPD to connect). I tried whiffing a bunch of stuff and mixing up the strengths of some of the attacks to reproduce it, but nothing worked except for the repeated crouching motion done while Vega was stunned.

While the combos are new, the glitch in Desk’s video has been showcased before. According to Maj, owner of technical fighting game sites Sonic Hurricane and ComboVid, its earliest appearance was in a VHS tape released sometime in the 1990s by old-school Street Fighter scientist TZW that’s since been lost to the sands of time. In fact, Maj himself utilized the bug in numerous compilations, including the one seen below.

The appearance of new combos for a game that launched before many top Street Fighter V players were born (hell, I was only two years old myself) is a big deal, especially for a group that values discovery and innovation as much as the fighting game community. World Warrior was quickly eclipsed by the various iterations that followed and now sits way behind tournament standard Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but the work Desk put into making this footage a reality is impressive and perfectly encapsulates the unique passion of the combo video community.
