England paceman Overton’s treble came just a day after Somerset captain Tom Abell had achieved the same feat and was remarkable in that all three of his dismissals were achieved via catches from Marcus Trescothick.
In the process veteran former England batsman Trescothick became the first outfielder since GJ Thompson of Northamptonshire in 1914 to be involved in three consecutive dismissals off as many balls.
Nottinghamshire started the third day on 3-115 but within 10 minutes the hosts had been reduced to 6-119 as Somerset, the First Division runners-up behind champions Surrey, surged to an innings and 146-run win.
Left-hander Ben Slater fell for 49 when he edged the ninth ball of the day to Trescothick at second slip.
Amazing!
Craig Overton has a hat-trick with all three wickets caught by Marcus Trescothick!
It’s Somerset’s second hat-trick in two days!
— Wisden (@WisdenCricket) September 26, 2018
The next two balls produced near identical dismissals, with right-handers Samit Patel and Riki Wessels nicking into the safe hands of Trescothick, who at the age of 42 has signed a new contract that will extend his career with south-west county Somerset into a 27th year in 2019.
This was Overton’s second first class hat-trick, after he took one for MCC against the-then champion county Middlesex in Abu Dhabi last year.

In the match before Nishikori's, Naomi Osaka moved into her first Grand Slam semifinal by routing Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday in the U.S. Open quarter-finals.
Only once in the professional era that began in 1968 had Japan had a men's and women's player in the quarter-finals at the same tournament. That was at Wimbledon in 1995, and both Shuzo Matsuoka and Kimiko Date lost in that round.
The seventh-seeded Cilic won the 2014 final in straight sets for his only career major title. Nishikori said this week that he was nervous once that match began, but this one was nothing like that day.
Instead, it resembled their 2010 second-round match in Flushing Meadows, when Nishikori rallied to win in five sets in 4:59, the fifth-longest men's singles match by time in U.S. Open history.
The No. 21 seed continued his strong season after returning from a wrist injury that forced him to miss the U.S. Open last year and will play either No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic or unseeded John Millman on Friday.
"I wish I don't go to five sets every time," Nishikori said.
Osaka had it much easier, continuing what's been a largely dominant run through the draw by winning in just 57 minutes, the third time in her five matches she didn't even have to play an hour.
The No. 20 seed moved from Japan to New York at age 3, and her deepest major run is coming at the same tournament she first visited as a child.

"Well, it definitely means a lot for me, and I always thought if I were to win a Grand Slam, the first one I'd want to win is the US Open, because I have grown up here and, like, then my grandparents can come and watch," she said. "I think it would be really cool."
She raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and then 4-0 in the second against the shaky Tsurenko, who finished with more unforced errors than points in her first major quarter-final.
Osaka will face either 14th-seeded Madison Keys or No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro in the first major semifinal appearance for a Japanese woman since Date reached the final four at Wimbledon in 1996.
The 20-year-old said she was nervous, claiming to be "freaking out inside" — though it certainly never showed.
"Just like my entire body was shaking, so I'm really glad I was able to play well today," she said.
She won 59 points to just 28 for the unseeded Ukrainian, who knocked off No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
Osaka had consecutive 50-minute matches earlier in the tournament, including a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the third round.
It was another hot afternoon Wednesday, with temperatures in the high-80s (30s Celsius) but feeling some 10 degrees hotter with the humidity.

It was the perfect way to say goodbye.
Daniel Sedin scored on a power play 2:33 into overtime with his brother Henrik Sedin earning an assist as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 Thursday night. It was the final game at home for the Sedins who were mobbed by their teammates after the goal.
Fans were on their feet the minute the Sedins went over the boards after Arizona’s Richard Panik was called for hooking. The goal came when Henrik passed back to Daniel, who blasted a shot from the blue line.
After the game the two brothers slowly skated around the ice at Rogers Arena, waving at the fans.
The brothers had combined for a goal earlier in the game, with Daniel scoring and Henrik assisting again.
That play began with Henrik making a move along the boards, then dishing the puck to defenceman Alex Edler, who was streaking toward the goal. He passed to Daniel, who shot into an open net to tie the game 1-1.
The Canucks winning the game was just the icing on the cake. Watching the Sedins produce their magic one last time at home was what the fans really wanted to see.
The 37-year-old twins from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, announced Monday they are retiring after playing 17 seasons with the Canucks. Drafted second and third overall in 1997, their final game will be Saturday in Edmonton against the Oilers.
There were loud cheers each time the Sedins stepped on the ice, anticipation whenever they touched the puck.
The fans almost got their wish 18 seconds into the game when Henrik hit the post.
Christian Fischer, Derek Stepan and Dylan Strome scored for Arizona (29-40-12). Jake Virtanen and Brendan Leipsic got the other goals for the Canucks (31-40-10). Both teams will miss the playoffs.
With Vancouver struggling in the standings Rogers Arena has often been a quite building with plenty of empty seats this season. The energy and enthusiasm returned Thursday as a large, noisy crowd jammed into the building to watch the Sedins one last time.
The first standing ovation came when the Sedins stepped on the ice prior to the national anthems. Henrik reminded the minor hockey player joining them to remove her helmet before the anthems. She hugged each brother after.
The fans were on their feet again with 11:50 gone in the first period. Daniel gave a wave.
The third period began with a thunderous roar as the twins stepped on the ice for the opening faceoff. A Daniel shot on net got the fans up again, prompting chants of “go Sedins go” and “hall of fame.”
The standing ovations continued after most whistles. Daniel and Henrik acknowledged with waves. There even was a Viking clap.
The brothers were the first players on the ice during the pre-game warmups. Fans lined the boards waving signs and snapping pictures on cell phones. Some bright yellow Swedish national team sweaters stood out among the seas of blue Canuck jerseys. There were Viking helmets and baseball caps.
One woman held up a sign which lit up with the words “congrats Henrik and Daniel.”
Prior to the game there was a video tribute. Past Canuck players and coaches talked about the Sedins’ history, their contributions on the ice and their work in the community. A tribute mural wall was installed outside the arena for fans to write messages. The lights outside Rogers Arena and in many city buildings glowed Swedish blue and yellow in tribute.

If it seems ridiculous that virtually every major car manufacturer has its own suite of transportation services, you’re not alone. BMW and Daimler have announced a plan to combine their mobility services in a 50/50 joint venture. Car2Go and DriveNow/ReachNow will unite their car sharing efforts, for example, while ChargeNow and Digital Charging Solutions would team up on EV power. Ride hailing, parking are also part of the proposed union.
The two are hoping regulators will clear the services merger sometime in 2018. They’re clearly aware of the potential qualms over anti-competitive behavior, as they stress that they’ll remain competitors in car manufacturing.
The aim, as you might suspect, is to gain a controlling stake in a future where car ownership declines and electric cars take over. Ford, GM and other big brands have all launched or experimented with their own services — there’s a chance that BMW and Daimler could be overwhelmed if they kept up the status quo. We wouldn’t be surprised to see more alliances like this as mobility services mature and it becomes clearer which companies are leading the pack.

America’s greatest enemies have been lined up for the latest add-on to Grand Theft Auto Online – perpetuating the old trope of an imminent global threat that only the US can meet.
Within seconds of the opening of the trailer for the popular game’s ‘Doomsday Heist’ add-on, all the usual suspects are named as possible culprits behind a bid to start a war against the US. “It has to be the Russians… or the North Koreans… or the Chinese… or the Iranians,” a billionaire tech mogul tells his crew of true US patriots assembled to save the fictional city of San Andreas from total annihilation.
While the tone of the trailer may be somewhat tongue in cheek, it continues a global trend of presenting whoever happens to be the bogeymen of US foreign policy as the perennial bad guys. And in the eyes of the western entertainment industry, the new axis of evil of Russia, North Korea and Iran, is ripe for picking.
Some of the most successful US TV series’ of recent years were plotted on the concept of the foreign enemy. In the Netflix series ‘House of Cards,’ fictional Russian president Viktor Petrov shares striking similarities to the western media’s characterization of Vladimir Putin.
Similarly, ‘Homeland’ has plots that often run parallel to political goings on while also pushing Islamophobic stereotypes. Meanwhile, ‘The Americans’ bolsters Russian paranoia by reminding the audience that even your next door neighbour could be a KGB officer.

Dr Matthew Alford, a Teaching Fellow in Politics at the University of Bath, whose research focus is on the relationship between screen entertainment and political power in Western democracies, told RT.com that “popular culture provides mood music for political culture.”
“Collectively our mainstream entertainment provides considerable support for the national security state,” he added.
Earlier this year, Alford co-authored the book ‘National Security Cinema,’ an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the US government and Hollywood. Based on thousands of pages of US military and intelligence documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act, the book reveals the power of the Pentagon to stop a film from being made by refusing or withdrawing support.

One such film is ‘The Recruit’, the 2003 film starring Colin Farrell as a CIA agent in the making. Documents reveal the movie, which also featured Al Pacino as Farrell’s mentor, was heavily influenced by the CIA’s long-serving entertainment liaison officer, Chase Brandon.
The blockbuster includes lines about the new threats of the post-Soviet world along with rebuttals of the idea that the CIA failed to prevent 9/11.
“The level of military manipulation on film scripts has been fairly comparable since the early years of Hollywood. Over the last twenty years though, there has been a real spike in the military’s involvement in TV and the CIA has gotten much more pro-active,” Alford said.
The cliché of the Russian baddy has been around so long that it’s perhaps no surprise that recent political allegations against the nation have been so easy to swallow. Is there really a need for concrete evidence of Russian interference in US elections when audiences have been digesting negative propaganda about the country and its people since the height of the Cold War.
However, it’s not just the Russians that get the stereotypical arch-villain treatment. Any one’s game as long as it doesn’t affect box office dollars. The 2012 remake of Red Dawn (originally about a Soviet invasion of the US) intended to pit the Americans against an invading Chinese army, but later the antagonists were changed to North Koreans in order to maintain access to China’s profitable box office.
“The potential influence on the public of military-backed record-breaking blockbusters like Avatar should ring alarm bells in a democracy. This story of censorship has been routinely suppressed and soft-pedaled for decades,” Alford said.
