EPIX is adapting the popular novels The Warlord Chronicles and A Column of Fire in the coming year, the cable network announced Saturday, in addition to plans for a docuseries about a late-’70s Massachusetts cult.

The Winter King will take on the the mythic saga of King Arthur. Led by the producing team behind The Night Of and His Dark Materials, the scripted drama will adapt Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy of Arthurian novels, The Warlord Chronicles. In the first book, Derfel Cadarn, a former warrior sworn to Arthur and now an elderly monk, tells the story of how Arthur became warlord of Dark Age Britain despite illegitimacy to the throne.

A Column of Fire is based on author Ken Follett’s Elizabethan-era dramatic novel of the same name. Written by former British actress Lizzie Mickery, the series will follow the 1558 romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald, continuing on through half a century of political intrigue and turmoil.

Gibson Station, a dramedy set in 1984, centers on three 20-somethings and best friends who set out to pursue their dreams and leave their stamp in Ronald Reagan’s America. The series is helmed by producer/writer/director Edward Burns.

Also on deck is Fall River, a documentary series about a group of brutal murders in 1979 Fall River, Mass. The series chronicles a satanic cult that police alleged was practicing human sacrifice. Cult leader Carl Drew was captured and sent to prison for life without parole, but 20 years later, inconsistent evidence continued haunting the lead investigator, throwing the entire case into question. With new witnesses and evidence on hand, the shocking story of a town caught in the frenzy of “Satanic Panic” will unfold. James Buddy Day (The Lover’s Lane Murders) serves as executive producer and director.

The active volcano Popocatepetl, located in Central Mexico, has exploded Saturday evening, sending ash two kilometers into the air with the cloud of smoke moving in a northeast direction.

Videos from the eruption show a powerful explosion and traces of magma flowing out of the crater. Possible ash fall is expected in areas surrounding the summit. At the moment the volcanic warning issued by the Federal Civil Protection remains at ‘Phase 2’.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay clear of the region, and those already in the area to take precaution against a potential ash fall. Pyroclastic flows are also possible following the eruption.

Premier League in danger as foreign owners keep sacking managers – COLIN MAFHAM COLUMN https://briefnews.eu/premier-league-in-danger-as-foreign-owners-keep-sacking-managers-colin-mafham-column/ https://briefnews.eu/premier-league-in-danger-as-foreign-owners-keep-sacking-managers-colin-mafham-column/#respond Wed, 07 Mar 2018 14:55:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/premier-league-in-danger-as-foreign-owners-keep-sacking-managers-colin-mafham-column/

WHOEVER first said “football is a funny old game” definitely didn’t have a sense of humour. Just ask Alan Pardew – and half a dozen other Premier League managers as well for that matter.

Pards goes into Saturday’s game against Leicester well aware that another defeat will probably see him sacked. And he’s only he had the job four months or so.

Even after being fired by three other clubs before this one Pardew at his most cynical could reasonably expected to have been given a bit longer to turn things around at West Brom.

But what is even more distasteful about this is that if he does get the bullet it will be fired from 5,000 miles away in China where the club’s owners do business.

The Baggies chief executive has been summoned there to meet paymasters he has never actually met before – and who have already fired one West Brom manager, a chairman, and a chief executive since last November – to discuss Pardew’s future.

It’s a crazy situation for him and the players and will almost certainly end in Albion’s relegation at the end of this season, with or without the present manager.

I’m not saying it was a league of gentlemen before, but the arrival of several foreign owners has brought a rather more ruthless culture to the Premier League. If such a thing is possible.

Pardew isn’t the only one. Remember what happened to several other managers at Birmingham City, and what most observers reckon is very likely to be the fate of Mauricio Pellegrino at Southampton.

Mr Pardew was, of course, manager of the Saints before they were taken over by a Chinese gentleman last year, and when they were run by a Swiss/German family.

But despite his own perilous predicament Pards will have sympathy with the latest potential managerial casualty at St Mary’s where the Argentinian has struggled to make an impact during his brief time in charge and may well pay the price in what looks like being a brutal summer of discontent in the Premier League.

Antonio Conte looks certain to go through the Stamford Bridge exit door at the end of the season after his Russian boss, Roman Abramovich, appears to have come to a bizarre conclusion that failing to win the league title for a second consecutive year is a failure.

Then, of course, you have the ongoing saga of Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal, where his American boss, Stan Kroenke, has sent his son, Josh, over from the States to try to sort out the Gunners demise.

To be fair the American has stood by Wenger rather more than other football club owners from other parts of the world.

And just in case you think I’m a ranting old racist – which I vehemently deny, by the way – I refer you to two other managers facing the chop sooner rather than later, who are run by Englishmen!

Rafa Benitez may choose to jump before he’s pushed at Newcastle, where Mike Ashley has, in his defence, poured million into the Geordies. But now he is now dithering to such an extent that the Premier League future of the club he has generously funded is now threatened.

Peter Coates has been similarly supportive at Stoke, but I can’t see Paul Lambert surviving there beyond the end of May if the Potters are relegated, can you?

Same story at West Ham where the Davids Sullivan and Gold somewhat surprisingly gave David Moyes the job until the end of the season, but if past dealings are anything to go by won’t hesitate to send him on his way if expectations are not realised.

You couldn’t make it up, could you? Even good old John McEnroe (and Alan Pardew, of course) might say of our Premier League sack race: You can not be serious!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A STRANGE request, I know, but is there anyone out there prepared to loan me £140million. Interest free?

I would ‘buy’ Sunderland Football Club with the money, and although none of the present squad is worth a brass farthing the Stadium Of Light would fetch bit if the worst happened, wouldn’t it?

I haven’t actually spoken to owner Ellis Short since he offered to give the club away for free to anyone prepared to take on its £140million debts, but I’m sure we could come to some sort of arrangement if he would like to get in touch.

Unlike his present managerial team I would hand P45s to every single one of the players who have virtually guaranteed Sunderland’s relegation to League One – and fight them in court if need be.

What’s happened to the club I’ve supported all my life is a disgrace by players who ought to be ashamed of themselves. So if anyone does have £140million to spare, I’m ready, willing, and able to spend it wisely!

Aston Martin recalling all DB11s over Daimler steering column https://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-recalling-all-db11s-over-daimler-steering-column/ https://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-recalling-all-db11s-over-daimler-steering-column/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 09:07:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aston-martin-recalling-all-db11s-over-daimler-steering-column/

Aston Martin has become the latest carmaker to be caught up in a major recall of faulty Daimler steering-column components that can cause unintended airbag deployments.

The British sports car maker is recalling all 3,873 DB11 coupes built since late 2015, when production of the flagship model began, Aston Martin spokesman Kevin Watters confirmed. He said repairs would be carried out to “address an issue with the DB11 steering column upper.”

Daimler last year recalled more than 1 million Mercedes-Benz cars fitted with steering-column parts also supplied to Aston and Nissan. The Japanese carmaker’s Infiniti brand recalled 17,500 affected vehicles.

The issue is unrelated to a global recall of faulty Takata airbag inflators that have been blamed for 20 deaths.

Inadequate grounding in the Daimler units leaves their circuitry vulnerable to electrostatic charges that can trigger unintended airbag deployments, according to earlier warnings.

Mercedes reported “a handful of instances where drivers suffered minor abrasions or bruises” as a result of the problem. No Aston Martin customers have reported any such incidents to date, the company said, adding the necessary repair work would be carried out free of charge in less than two hours.

Erupting Bali volcano spews huge column of ash, forcing airlines to re-route flights (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/erupting-bali-volcano-spews-huge-column-of-ash-forcing-airlines-to-re-route-flights-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/erupting-bali-volcano-spews-huge-column-of-ash-forcing-airlines-to-re-route-flights-videos/#respond Sat, 25 Nov 2017 22:47:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/erupting-bali-volcano-spews-huge-column-of-ash-forcing-airlines-to-re-route-flights-videos/

The Mount Agung volcano, on the Indonesian island of Bali, has erupted for a second time in less than a week, firing a column of ash 1,500 meters into the air.

The eruption emitted a bigger ash cloud than Tuesday’s blast. It caused several airlines – including, KLM, Qantas, AirAsia, and Virgin – to cancel or rearrange flights in the region.

“Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung,” Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement.

“There has not been an increase in seismic and volcanic activity after the (Tuesday) eruption until this afternoon,” the statement read.

BNBP spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho shared an image showing a burning red glow at the top of the volcano, as the agency also urged the people in the vicinity of the mountain not to panic.

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes in recent months over fears of potential destruction an eruption could bring. More than 1,000 people were killed when the mountain last erupted in 1963.

Despite the cancellations JA Barata, a spokesman for Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, said flights in and out of Bali remained “normal.”

“Tactical guidance for departure and arrival aircraft has been applied. This hasn’t endangered any flights,” he said, according to Reuters.

The volcano on the island, which is a hugely popular tourist destination, became active in August. Authorities raised the alert to the highest level and ordered the evacuation of people living within a 12-kilometer radius around Mount Agung, forcing some 130,000 residents to leave their homes in September and October. But in recent weeks, volcanic activity on Agung had been slowing, with authorities lowering the alert status to the third highest classification and the number of evacuees living in shelters decreasing to roughly 30,000 people.

Nick Compton, ex-England cricketer, will write for the Express throughout the AshesGETTY

Nick Compton will write for the Express in association with Ladbrokes throughout the Ashes

Seventeen England cricketers have the opportunity to become heroes during the next seven weeks of the Ashes series.

If individuals can embrace the toughest challenge in world cricket and inspire the team to become winners, their names will be indelibly-linked to the cricketing heroes of yesteryear who succeeded Down Under: Jardine, Hutton, Illingworth, Gatting and Strauss are all men whose careers have been remembered for all the right reasons. Joe Root will be hoping he becomes known as more than a top-class batsman. The next five Tests could see him crowned as a champion cricketer. But it’s going to be a tough gig.

It’s very hard to gauge where England stand going into the first Test in Brisbane.

The standard of the opposition has hardly been testing up to now, which can often give us all a false sense of security.

I remember my first tour to India in 2012. We played a couple of warm-up matches in India before the first Test in Ahmedabad and the opposition on each occasion were nothing better than a Saturday afternoon club side. As the first day of my first Test dawned, I was unsure as to whether I was truly prepared or not.

I had made a few runs before the Test but the prospect of facing R. Ashwin, Zaheer Khan and Ravi Jadeja a week later in front of 50,000 screaming fans was another matter all together.

The most important question a player asks themselves when they arrive in a foreign land is: ‘Can I find form and can I find it early?’.

A few nets and gym sessions in a freezing indoor school back home in October is better than nothing, but it barely skims the surface regarding where you need to be – the skin you need to slip into.

At the outset, everyone is queuing up to contribute and make that starting line up if at all possible. In a side with great team spirit this can be enervating – a real positive. I think this squad has that overriding quality of selflessness about it.

Mark StonemanGETTY

Mark Stoneman made England’s first hundred of the tour in the final warm-up game

Mark Stoneman needs to be a trump card in England’s batting line-up

The general consensus is that apart from Root and Alastair Cook, there are a lot of question marks regarding the top order. Even Cook needs a big series in my opinion but there is even more focus on his opening partner, as well as the gaping holes at No 3 and No 5.

Put simply and spun positively, there’s a great opportunity for the new crop of batters to step up and grasp on to. The reality is that these opportunities don’t come round every day for batsmen. I’ve known very fine players wait in vain for years to get in the Test side whilst Alec Stewart, Mike Atherton, Graham Thorpe or Nasser Hussain were effectively permanent fixtures in the team due to their excellence in performance terms.

Of course you need to add into the mix too that this is the Ashes. Expectations are higher than for any other series – and the Australian support in a home series is a major factor too.

The coaching staff will want the starting line-up to perform from the off. This was clearly what they and the selectors had in mind when choosing the squad.

James VinceGETTY

James Vince struggled during his first spell in the England team

I think in Mark Stoneman, England are hoping to find the more aggressive partner they have been searching for to be the foil to Alastair Cook. I like him as both a player and a person. I love his no-nonsense attacking nature and single-minded determination to not give up on his England dream after many years being disregarded by the selectors. He has earned his opportunity through stealth. The Surrey opening batsman has already made an impact on the tour and scored a fine century yesterday against a Cricket Australia XI. I think he could become a key player for England because the conditions will bring the best out of him. We may get off to the odd flier with his style of play!

But at first wicket down, there’s doubt surrounding the quality of James Vince, much like Tom Westley before him. Until a batsman scores runs consistently at test level, the question marks will remain. Vince’s selection to bat at three was a decision based around his ability to play the short-of-a-length ball. And, if one remembers Michael Vaughan’s remarkable series in Australia in 2002/03 where he dealt with the miserly McGrath imperiously off both front and back foot, I really hope the Hampshire batsman can find his best game at No 3 because England will need a Vaughan-type series if England are to retain the Ashes.

There seems to be a conviction among the selectors and team management he will flourish on the true, generally flatter wickets of Australia against a ball that rarely deviates. While there’s no doubt he possesses a very good pull shot and one of the best cover drives in the game, it looks like a gamble to expect him to dig in, if required.

Like so many in this England side, Vince is a stroke-player who I suspect will look to fight fire with fire. It should make for exciting watching but in all honesty, I wouldn’t have selected him to tour Australia. I think my Middlesex colleague Sam Robson is a more solid batsman and at No 3, I would prefer to see another opener rather than a shot player in the England team for this series. You need to ‘blunt’ the new ball if England’s powerful middle order is to have its best chance of excelling on a regular basis.

England’s inexperienced Test players have never played against the kind of bowling on the pitches they will be batting on over the coming seven weeks – that’s a massive thing for three or four of these guys. And when you consider how many of Australia’s batters average over 50 in their own country, it is hard to see how, on paper, Australia cannot be anything other than strong favourites going in to the series. However, we all know the game isn’t played on paper!

The key for England is going to be the need to play well in Brisbane and achieve a Test victory. At worst, England will need to leave Queensland with a drawn match against their name and go to Adelaide with the confidence that the two teams are relatively equal once the hype dies down and the real cricket has begun.

Dawid Malan looks likely to bat at five. A long-time team-mate, he has become a fine player and capable of adapting his game to conditions and the situation, but I suspect he is having to work hard on improving his skills against pace and bounce.

I love that he has thus far given himself the best chance of succeeding at the highest level by curtailing his natural game and adapting to spend long periods in the middle, building an innings in the tried and tested way.

He has been seen as a bit of a ‘dasher’ – especially when he burst onto the international stage by thumping an audacious 70 in a T20 against South Africa.

When picked for the Test side, people were expecting more of the same, but Malan showed his adaptability at Headingley against West Indies with a committed, determined and defensive innings which suggested he had both the game, and the mind for Test cricket. The key for Dawid will be how well he deals with a higher quality pace attack.

Mitchell StarcGETTY

Mitchell Starc is expected to be the pick of Australia’s bowlers – if he can stay fit

Australia’s bowlers could find fitness is the winning strategy

So much has been said in the build-up about the Australian fast bowling quartet of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Jackson Bird.

Forget the hype. I think this series is not only going to be decided on the fitness levels of the teams’ respective opening bowlers. Broad and Anderson are superb. But, they are in the latter phase of their career as a pair of bowlers and the back-up men have been injured already. The challenge for Broad and Anderson (should they get injured) is how quickly their bodies can recover.

Bowling in the intense heat of Australia, on flat pitches, is a total different challenge from bowling in England, on every level: technical, mental, emotional and physical. If they struggle for form or fitness, the options are limited, whereas Australia have a collection of opening bowlers in domestic cricket, fit and most likely in some good form over the coming weeks. Home advantage is massive from this perspective.

In recent years, Australia have developed some quick bowlers of note, and if they stay fit, England’s batsmen may be in for a torrid time. But one by one, Australia’s emerging pacemen have been troubled by a variety of ailments, from stress fractures of the lower back to hamstring problems and in the case of Mitchell Johnson, old father time catching up with him and forcing his retirement from Test cricket.

Australia will have a great starting line-up in Brisbane, but will ‘the fearsome foursome’ last all five Tests? I somehow doubt it.

If they do stay fit, then the key for England will be in the quality of their defensive skills against the hard, new ball when the pitch is at its freshest.

Anyone who knows me and my philosophy will understand that I am tied to one very strong principle. You have to have batters at the top of an order that can blunt an opposing attack. Many people came up to me after the recent South African series and said the duel I had with Dale Steyn in the first Test in Durban and his resulting injury had a major impact on the final result.

Whether England get starts and get through those initial 20 to 30 overs is at the heart of it all for me. I would rather see us 100/0 off 50 overs at Brisbane than 200/4. To me Test cricket is and will always be about playing the long game. The bullying can be done by England’s awesome middle-order when the platform is truly set.

The importance of Cook and captain Root’s contributions is loud and clear. This is a massive series for my one-time England opening partner. He knows it and will do everything in his power to make a massive impact on the series by just focusing on what he does best – score runs at his own pace in his own inimitable way. No fuss, no sweat, just good clips off his hip, rasping square cuts, strong pull shots and powerful checked drives through extra cover and back past the bowler.

Craig OvertonGETTY

Craig Overton impressed on Championship debut five years ago, having just turned 18

For England to succeed, the middle order has to maintain its recent brilliance, but to do so, they will need to be coming in at 200/3, and not having to counter-attack their way out of trouble from 95/4. Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes will be licking their lips down the order if Stoneman, Vince and Malan do the business up front.

And if Broad and Anderson can find top form and stay fit, England have a real chance in the first two matches of establishing a strong foothold in the series to take to Perth. Get ahead in any sporting contest, and you never know how your opponent will deal with adversity. They may lose form, confidence, and could start to turn on each other, which will help England find a place of relative dominance going to the WACA in the all-important third Test match.

Every England cricketer is faced with a career-defining chance to come home from Australia as cricketing hero. Let’s hope they do…

In the past, we’ve witnessed Fox News take an editorial position against basic facts, but has it really influenced anyone’s vote? (credit: Aurich Lawson / Thinkstock)

While it has presented itself as “balanced” over the years, there’s little doubt that Fox News has consistently supported Republican candidates and positions even when that required taking an editorial position against basic facts. On some level, this has worked, as surveys have indicated Fox viewers are more likely to get those same facts wrong. But is it working in terms of the larger goal of supporting Republican causes?

According to a new study, the answer is yes. Two researchers, Gregory Martin and Ali Yurukoglu, have taken advantage of huge amounts of public data, some inadvertent experiments, and a lot of previous research to look into the influence of Fox News on people’s votes. They conclude that, in recent elections, the mere availability of Fox could shift nationwide votes by over a percentage point.

The paper itself is rather complicated and tackles a lot of related issues regarding the influence of news media on voting. Martin and Yurukoglu are quite fond of mathematical analysis; it’s rare for them to go more than a paragraph without regressing something (often several somethings). As a result, a lot of the paper reads like the following: “If voters treat signals from slanted outlets as true draws on the state of the world, and further, if they do not account for the correlation between repeated signals from the same source as in the model of DeMarzo, Vayanos, and Zwiebel, then equation 8 arises as the inverse-variance-weighted average of signals observed by viewer i in period t.”

Piers Morgan, 52, and Susanna Reid, 46, were joined by Afua and Trisha Goddard, 59, on Good Morning Britain and it wasn’t long before they were involved in yet another on-air clash as Piers accused the writer and broadcaster of wanting to tear down Admiral Lord Nelson’s statue because he’s white.

Asking why she didn’t think Nelson Mandela’s figure should be taken down, Piers screamed: “Why would you support that but not for Lord Nelson? One rule [for one] because of his skin colour?

“So, you don’t see the battle against Napoleon as a battle worth fighting, do you or don’t you?

“You’re a black woman saying a white war hero that saved the country should not have a statue. There’s a race element [here] that you cannot deny!”

Eager to have her say, Trisha then jumped in by saying: “Can I jump in here, you’re making this about black and white!” but Piers wasn’t having any of it and continued to yell: “My point to you is that you can construct a negative argument about almost every hero. Let me finish the question!”

Susanna then interrupted: “We need Trisha to come in here!” as Piers shouted: “Wait a minute! Let’s take down Winston Churchill’s statue!”

Piers eventually told Afua, who insisted that she wasn’t “ready to take a bulldozer to Trafalgar Square” despite her recent column: “They saved this nation! [It’s] deeply offensive to most people in this country,” as Susanna sighed: “We can’t be accused of not having a debate on this programme.”

As per usual GMB viewers were quick to take to Twitter to discuss the major talking point, with one Piers fan posting: “So many people offended by the slightest of things, can’t go tearing down historical statues #GMB #piersmorganisright.”

However, another pointed out: “The @piersmorgan strategy for winning an argument: stop the other person making their point by continually cutting them off. Bravo #GMB.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Everton FC Have Banned The Sun Newspaper Over A Column That Compared A Player To A Gorilla https://briefnews.eu/everton-fc-have-banned-the-sun-newspaper-over-a-column-that-compared-a-player-to-a-gorilla/ https://briefnews.eu/everton-fc-have-banned-the-sun-newspaper-over-a-column-that-compared-a-player-to-a-gorilla/#respond Sat, 15 Apr 2017 12:24:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/everton-fc-have-banned-the-sun-newspaper-over-a-column-that-compared-a-player-to-a-gorilla/

Everton Football Club have banned journalists from the Sun newspaper after it published a column from a former editor that compared one of its players to a gorilla.

A statement from the Premier League club said the Sun was banned from “all areas of its operation” following the “appalling and indefensible” allegations made against Ross Barkley, who has a grandfather who was born in Nigeria, and people from Liverpool.

“Yesterday Everton Football Club informed the Sun newspaper it was banned from Goodison Park, the USM Finch Farm training ground and all areas of the club’s operation,” the statement said.

“Whilst we will not dignify any journalist with a response to appalling and indefensible allegations, this newspaper has to know that any attack on this city, either against a much respected community or individual, is not acceptable.”

Kelvin MacKenzie’s column appeared in the Sun on Friday, but he was suspended and the article removed from the newspaper’s website after it was reported to police by the city’s major Joe Anderson.

In his column, MacKenzie, who was editor of the Sun when it published its infamous “The Truth” headline in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, wrote about Barkley being punched twice in a nightclub last week in an unprovoked attack.

“There is something about the lack of reflection in his eyes which makes me certain not only are the lights not on, there is definitely nobody at home,” he wrote, next to a close-up picture of the eyes of Barkley, and a gorilla under the sub-headline “Here’s why they go ape at Ross”.

MacKenzie continued: “The reality is that at £60,000 a week and being both thick and single, he is an attractive catch in the Liverpool area, where the only men with similar pay packets are drug dealers and therefore not at nightclubs, as they are often guests of Her Majesty.”

The Sun apologised for any offence and, along with MacKenzie, said it was unaware England midfielder Barkley, 23, was part-Nigerian.

MacKenzie added it was “beyond parody” to say the column was racist.

Earlier this year Liverpool Football Club banned the Sun from its stadium and training ground over its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

Saturday 15 April, the day of Everton’s decision to ban the Sun, marked the 28th anniversary of the disaster.
