Splatoon 2 has been making a mess on Nintendo Switch for the past few weeks now.
The sequel to the underappreciated Wii U shooter is a very Nintendo affair, replacing bullets and grenades with paint guns and ink bombs.
Splatoon returns with new maps and weapons, a brand new wave-based survival mode called Salmon Run and the classic Turf War competition where the aim is to cover arenas with as much paint as possible.
That’s on top of a more in-depth story mode that’s packed with new moves and techniques, bigger bosses and even more objectives.
With a few weeks of game time under our belt, an unsuccesful Splatfest (we like Ketchup best) and a bit of time with the SplatNet2 mobile service, now seems like a good time to bring you our Splatoon 2 review.
So check out the gallery below for what we liked and disliked about Splatoon 2…
There’s certainly lots to like about Splatoon 2, which apart from being more colourful and vibrant than your average shooter, is also much more unique.
The Turf War game mode is still enormously entertaining, and something that can be picked up and played by anybody. You don’t have to worry too much about your aim or kill/death ratio, just shoot paint at anything that isn’t already covered by your team colours.
With tons of unlockables and plenty of customisation options, Splatoon 2 gives fans lots of reasons to keep coming back, which is also true of those regular Splatfest events, where you battle for the honour of cakes, ice cream, cats and dogs.
The new and improved single-player mode is genuinely worth playing this time around – it’s a useful way of learning tricks, for starters – but it’s the surprisingly challenging wave-based survival mode that’s the real star.
Salmon Run is a fiendishly difficult game mode that tasks teams with defeating waves of enemies and collecting Power Eggs. It’s hugely satisfying when you complete your objectives as a team, and the main reason to pick the sequel up if you already owned the original Splatoon.
But Splatoon 2 isn’t without faults, especially when it comes to its online infrastructure.
Only having a couple of maps on rotation at any given times feels stingy, which isn’t helped by the overall sense that Splatoon 2 – like its predecessor – is just a bit light on content.
But the biggest problem is arguably the in-game chat limitations. Players must download a companion app to talk with teammates – and you’re going to need to in Salmon Run – and then use a cumbersome headset and splitter.
Fortunately, Splatoon 2 is simple enough and entertaining enough to survive these problems, although a steady stream of updates will be necessary to keep fans hooked for the long haul.
Splatoon 2 is another entertaining exclusive for a Nintendo Switch console that’s getting more appealing by the month, and absolutely essential if you missed the original.
If you’re particular about your spirits, you should choose an equally high-quality mixer to add to it. As well as classic ginger ale and lemon, these elegant little bottles contain interesting flavoured tonic waters such as floral aromatics and pink peppercorn, which will enhance your chosen spirit without overpowering it.
Make teething time as bearable as possible with this two-in-one bib. The absorbent cotton features a cute cat and dog print by fashion and lifestyle brand Joules, and it has a chewy teether on the bottom for comforting your little ones during this aggravating time.
The cactus trend shows no sign of slowing down, so bring a hint of the desert to your dressing table or handbag with this cute make-up bag. It’s made from jute fabric and embellished with beads and embroidery, and finished with a bright tassel on the zip.
Strawberry fields
Strawberries and cream biscuit card, £9, Biscuiteers (biscuiteers.com)
Know someone excited for the start of Wimbledon, or thinks themselves a bit of a tennis pro? Then send them these iced chocolate biscuits in the post as a lovely little gesture. After all, nothing says Wimbledon – or British summertime – quite like strawberries and cream.
Love is in the air
Iris & Lady Moore scented candle, £46, Jo Malone London (jomalone.co.uk)
Jo Malone’s annual charity candle is one of the prettiest designs we’ve ever seen. This limited-edition fragrance of iris and Lady Moore (a type of geranium) is a fresh, powdery floral scent, and with every purchase, Jo Malone will donate 75 per cent of the cost to their charity partners, helping to fund garden projects around the UK.
Sound and light show
Patio Mate parasol light with wireless speaker, £29.99, Prezzybox (prezzybox.com)
Hot summer nights sat outside call for this peculiar-shaped item this summer. It is in fact an outdoor light and wireless speaker in one – it clips around the top of your outdoor parasol (or can instead be hung up) to light up the table from above, and the Bluetooth speakers can play your favourite tunes from your smart device.
The rechargeable batteries will give over six hours of music – perfect for keeping the party going all night long.
PH
Top of the pops
Pops Frosé rosé & raspberry popsicle, £5.99 for a pack of three, Ocado, Wholefoods and Amazon Fresh
Keep your cool this summer with this adults-only ice-lolly. Made in Britain with raspberries and half a glass of rosé yet containing just 30 calories, it’s the perfect refreshment at a summer garden party. With five other varieties available, including two alcohol-free options, there’s something for everyone.
Going nuts
Pip & Nut flavoured nut butters, from £2.30 each, Sainsbury’s, Whole Foods and Ocado
Move over plain old peanut butter – Pip & Nut have got some new flavours for your kitchen cupboard. As well as crunchy peanut and almond varieties, there’s also a honey almond butter and an incredibly moreish chocolate coconut hazelnut butter. If you can resist spooning them straight form the jar, they’re delicious on toast or in smoothies.
With a flattering colour combination of a tortoiseshell frame and big, blue, reflective lenses, these sunglasses will certainly make your eyes pop. They’re unique and fashionable, and an excellent price.
Game Of Thrones
Royal Bingo game, £19.99, Laurence King (020 7841 6900, laurenceking.com)
Think you know your Princess Margaret from your Queen Margrethe of Denmark? Put your knowledge to the test with this simple game that’s fun for all the family. The drawings of the characters are accurate and detailed, and you never know, you might even learn something from it too.
Grand designs
Dior Catwalk: The Complete Collections, £48, Express Bookshop (see at expressbookshop.co.uk)
With their full skirts, nipped-in waists and feminine shapes, Christian Dior’s designs revolutionised women’s fashion in the 1940s and 50s. This beautifully illustrated book catalogues every one of the fashion house’s haute couture collections up to 2016, including John Galliano’s ready-to-wear lines.
We’re not advocating drinking a shot of this instead of your morning green juice but, 100 per cent organic and using all-natural ingredients, this Swedish spirits brand is about as ‘virtuous’ as vodka gets. Made from Swedish rye, the original spirit tastes clean, smooth and peppery, and it’s also available in ginger and bitter lemon flavours.
It may look like simple from a distance, but up close the intricately detailed engraving on this pendant is incredible. Choose your pendant first from a range of shapes, metals and finishes, then select your own artwork – perhaps an animal like this elephant, an initial or even your family crest. Rebus also does a selection of beautiful signet rings.
Add a touch of old-fashioned glamour to your beach look this summer with this fun floppy sun hat. With a contrasting turquoise trim and a flash of the hot pink slogan on the rim, you’ll be guaranteed to turn heads.
Possibly the most on-trend drink of 2017, turmeric lattes are excellent for gut health and a delicious, caffeine-free alternative to your usual cappuccino, and these instant powders are the easiest way to make them.
Made from turmeric root and blended with coconut milk, spices and flavouring, they’re dairy and gluten-free – simply add hot water to three heaped teaspoons and enjoy the creamy, soothing drink.
Jaw-dropping
Shark laundry basket, from £99, Babatude Boutique (babatude.com)
Make doing laundry more fun with this playful storage basket. Made from polyester felt, it can squeeze into any nook or cranny, and there’s also a smaller size available. We promise it won’t bite…
Easy rider
Pendleton Somerby electric bike, £750, Halfords (0345 504 5353, halfords.com)
If there’s one person who knows a thing or two about bikes, it’s Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton. She’s helped to create a range of bikes for Halfords, including this electric-powered one, which makes pedaling a piece of cake. It features eight speeds, a lightweight aluminium frame and a 5-hour battery life.
Complement your festival, holiday or weekend wardrobe with this delicate beaded bracelet. Turquoise beads are interspersed with little sterling silver ones on elastic, and a tiny silver shell charm hangs from the centre. It’s an elegant yet bohemian addition to add to your wrist.
Good to call

If you’re in the market for a new phone, LG’s new model is a sound choice. Sleek, shiny and easy to navigate, it includes features such as an 18:9 aspect ratio full-vision touch screen, built-in Google Assistant and water-resistance.
Our favourite parts are the home button conveniently situated on the back of the handset and a host of clever camera features.
Flock together
Studio Matryoshka nesting owls, £14, Bobby Rabbit (01143 217000, bobbyrabbit.co.uk)
Kids will love opening up these colourful wooden owls to reveal smaller ones inside. Unlike lots of children’s toys, they’re even stylish enough to be left out on display, lined up in height order or mixed around.
Bring a touch of the tropics in to your home (or even your garden patio) with this simple yet stylish chair. With a wooden frame and a funky palm-leaf print design on the canvas, it’s a bargain buy.
In the mix

This red one has a retro design and is sure to take pride of place on your kitchen counter.

GETTY
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
Back in 1967, California was at the centre of the Summer of Love, spreading peace and positive vibes from San Francisco to the rest of the world. Fast forward to 2017 – 50 years on from the ground-breaking counter-culture movement – and I found the love still alive and well on a tour of this chilled-out and friendly state.
I started my tour in Santa Cruz, where, on a walk downtown, I spotted people in tie-dye tops listening to live music echoing along the streets. I browsed the fresh fruit and veg stalls at the Santa Cruz Farmers’ Market, snacking on the sweetest strawberries I’d ever tasted.
Santa Cruz County has a lot to offer, so if you want to see it all it’s best to get behind the wheel. After a brief lesson in automatic left-hand drive, I cruised away from Beach Boardwalk, a corndog in hand, towards towering trees at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
En route through the Redwood Loop Trail, you can’t miss the giant Fremont Tree – it’s around 1,000 years old and its hollow base makes for great photo opportunities. During my visit, I had a bite to eat at the beautiful Laili restaurant and Capitola’s infamous Shadowbrook, too.
Laili serves delicious Mediterranean and Afghan fare, while Shadowbrook has a plate for every palate (the creamy mac and cheese with steak was amazing).
Another foodie highlight of my trip was the brilliant Solaire Restaurant + Bar at Hotel Paradox, where I was staying.
Luckily, there are plenty of watersports to keep the pounds off in Santa Cruz, and I signed up for a morning of paddleboarding.

My instructor, Trudie Ransom, at the SUP Shack, had me standing tall – albeit with shaking legs – in seconds. Nearby Kayak Connection will also rent you a kayak to paddle into the bay at your own pace, allowing you to spot otters, sea lions and even a whale if you’re lucky.
Afterwards, I put pedal to the metal along West Cliff Drive on my rented bicycle and soaked up the sun while surfers rode the waves in the distance. I was heading to Venus Spirits to try the local spirits, from organic whiskey to gin, aquavit and blue agave. Their resident golden labrador Juniper gives visitors a warm, furry welcome.
I also stopped off at small family winery Sones Cellars. Here, I raised a glass (or four) of wine with Michael Sones, the British founder and connoisseur of the Santa Cruz grape.
The drinks kept flowing that evening at Hotel Paradox, a short stride from the buzz of downtown, and the heated pool and hot tub were the icing on the cake. This luxury Redwood forest-inspired hotel and its guest rooms feature natural forest elements – from wooden stump tables to reclaimed wood panelling.

It was a relaxing haven that I found hard to tear myself away from, but San Francisco was calling and it was time to hit the road again.
We found our first dose of flower power in the Mission District, where its colourful street art paints the picture of a war-torn neighbourhood transformed into the vibrant centre we see today. Mexican restaurants line the streets and bakeries pump out sweet smells of cookies and cakes.
We embarked on the Summer of Love Experience at the de Young Fine Arts Museum in Golden Gate Park, bursting with old photographs, political artwork and fashion trends from the hippie days.
Luckily, we were well placed to explore all of the city’s major sights at the centrally located Taj Hotel, where the five-star treatment began from the moment we arrived. If you want to splash out, reserve a table at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Taj Campton Place.

Enjoy watersports in the beautiful sunshine
On our final day, we rode the magical old school cable car to San Francisco Bay, home to the popular Pier 39 which has more than 100 restaurants, shops and attractions. And thanks to our CityPASS, we also enjoyed a Blue & Gold Fleet cruise to the Golden Gate Bridge, passing the particularly vocal sea lions who sunbathe daily on the dock. A memorable end to our wonderful trip.
