Supporters say the $ 100 million construction, which will require the demolition of a number of recent government buildings, will be an important statement of national ambition. The west African country’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, who gifted the land for the project, insists that Ghanaian Christians, who make up roughly 70 percent of the population, need a symbol.
But in a country with high debt and an annual per capita income below $ 2,000, the plans have revived memories of the “Basilica in the Bush,” the largest church in the world, built in the 1980s by the then lifelong leader of Ivory Coast, Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
At a time when taxes are going up, banks have collapsed and you can’t pay for social programs, is it really the thing to do to build a cathedral?
Yaw Nsarkoh, vice president, Unilever
Critics have taken to social media to complain that, when schools lack roofs and farmers proper roads, building a cathedral might be frivolous. The project has also unsettled the country’s religious minorities, who worry about a possible blurring of church and state.
“At a time when taxes are going up, banks have collapsed and you can’t pay for social programs, is it really the thing to do to build a cathedral?” Yaw Nsarkoh, executive vice president of consumer group Unilever for Ghana and Nigeria, reflects.
Akufo-Addo was elected nearly two years ago by making big spending promises — which he has since had to cut back because of lack of funds. Yet the Ghanaian leader has brushed off criticism that the construction is a waste of money. “You’ll never have enough money to do everything at the same time,” he told the Financial Times Africa Summit in London last month. “People say: Is this a priority? It is a priority among other priorities.”
Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s finance minister, has insisted that the cathedral would largely be financed by private donors, though sceptics have said the government will end up underwriting it.
Other members of the establishment, while having mixed feelings about the construction, reject the argument that Ghana should postpone all prestige projects until it had tackled more pressing issues. “You can’t say: ‘Until we are wealthy, we cannot afford national pride,’ ” Edward Effah, chairman of Fidelity Bank, Ghana’s biggest, says.
Akufo-Addo has encapsulated his vision of a nation that can stand on its own feet in the slogan “Ghana Beyond Aid.”
Sir David, who also designed the acclaimed Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., has called the proposed structure a place where “religion, democracy and local tradition are seamlessly and symbolically intertwined.”
Yet critics say that the cathedral’s extravagance is driven less by concerns of national prestige and more by an emerging struggle over the role of Christianity in Ghana’s identity. Under former president John Mahama, who comes from the predominantly Muslim north, a Turkish foundation paid for the completion of a huge mosque in Accra.
“The Christians are feeling a bit upstaged by what they consider a minority religion,” says Kwasi Prempeh, executive director of Ghana’s Center for Democratic Development. “The Christians are saying, ‘We have to flex our political muscles.’ ”
Ofori-Atta, who, like the current president, is a devout Christian, has insisted that the state paid for Muslims to attend the Haj, and that it should not be taboo for it to back a Christian project. But so much has religion seeped into government that Ofori-Atta has led prayers this year for the successful completion of a eurobond issue — to the discomfort of some staff.
The government also views the cathedral as a way of clawing back ground from a plethora of evangelists and “charismatic preachers” who have drawn millions of people, and tens of millions of dollars, into their congregations.
“There are so many one-man-style churches, and these guys are making fortunes,” says Daniel Domelevo, Ghana’s auditor-general.
The government is considering taxing private churches on the grounds that they are more moneymaking enterprises than places of worship.
Crosby Aboagye, a taxi driver passing the looming Turkish mosque, says he supported the idea of the new cathedral. “There are only a few Muslims. We are a Christian country,” he says. “If you go to Ivory Coast, they have a national cathedral. Why not Ghana?”

At my most reductive, I’d call Extinction one long string of escort missions. The game struggles and claws to add more variety, in small ways, but it never shakes up or fleshes out its core rhythm enough to justify a full game. Instead, it feels like a frustrating proof of concept, unworthy of its evocative title.
Backing up a bit, Extinction is an action-platformer clearly influenced by Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, and especially the anime Attack on Titan. A medieval-fantasy world—of which we only catch shallow glimpses—is under siege by towering, teleporting ogres called “Ravenii” who can topple whole cities with ease. You play as a bland meatbrain who, as we learn through a handful of barely animated 2D cutscenes, is also a magical warrior called a Sentinel. The title grants him enough parkour powers to run up the speechless invaders and lop their heads off.
And lop heads he does. Constantly. Head lopping is pretty much Extinction’s only neat trick, though even that novelty crumbles faster than the settlements you’re meant to protect. It doesn’t take long at all to figure out how sloppy the process really is.
You can’t just kill one of the Ravenii, for instance. First, you need to charge up a decapitating strike. That means bounding around the city, killing largely meaningless lesser monsters by mashing the square button, or standing next to large crystals long enough to teleport handfuls of civilians to safety. This is where the “escort” elements kick in. Besides needing to complete a given objective before the ogres destroy too much of each city, you want to protect civilians from the man-sized goblins. That way you can bank them for killing blows later on.
]]>The bill, proposing a record increase in military funding, has been sent to President Donald Trump for enactment into law. The House approved the budget earlier on Thursday morning and passed it on to the Senate for approval.
Got $ 1.6 Billion to start Wall on Southern Border, rest will be forthcoming. Most importantly, got $ 700 Billion to rebuild our Military, $ 716 Billion next year…most ever. Had to waste money on Dem giveaways in order to take care of military pay increase and new equipment.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 22, 2018
Trump is widely anticipated to approve the bill, to avoid a government shutdown, after the Senate voted 65-32 to pass the budget. Earlier Trump welcomed the passing of the bill by the House 256-167, tweeting “got $ 700 billion to rebuild our Military, $ 716 billion next year…most ever.”
House Majority Speaker Paul Ryan expressed his satisfaction with the deal. “This bill starts construction on the wall. It turns the Gateway decision over to the Trump administration. It funds our war on opioids. It invests in infrastructure. It funds school safety and mental health,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.
The $ 1.3 trillion spending package adopted by US lawmakers will significantly increase funding for the military, and keep the government funded through September. But the bill will leave a bitter taste for fiscal conservatives, with a projected budget deficit of more than $ 800 billion for 2018.
“This omnibus doesn’t just forget the promises we made to voters, it flatly rejects them,” Representative Mark Meadows, head of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said, after the House vote on Thursday. “This is wrong. This is not the limited government conservatism our voters demand.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Tuesday called President Trump’s five-nation Asia trip a “colossal flop” and hit the president for having a “love for dictators” that he exhibited during the trip.
“I have never been so ashamed of a foreign trip in my years. It’s just inside-out,” Schumer said while speaking on the Senate floor, pointing to Trump’s refusal to call the Chinese out for their unfair trade practices like he did on the campaign trail.
He also hit Trump for his notable comments on Twitter about North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, where he called him “short and fat.” Schumer called that a “sophomoric exchange,” when Trump should have been talking to regional powers about containing the North Korean regime.
“He settled for a sophomoric exchange of insults on Twitter, far below the dignity of the office,” Schumer said.
“Every American should be embarrassed,” Schumer continued. “Adding insult to injury, he seems to have a love for dictators.”
Schumer was referring to Trump’s decision not to admonish Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte during his trip to the country over human rights abuses.
“All in all, President Trump’s trip to Asia was a colossal flop. An embarrassment,” Schumer said. “He seemed far more interested in pomp and circumstance, red carpets, fancy meals, flattery of foreign leaders than advancing vital American interests in a region that’s increasingly looking to China for leadership.”
Trump returned to Washington late Tuesday night.

An extraordinary engineering operation is underway to erect the 5,500-ton roadway arch that will connect the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea and the Taman Peninsula of mainland Russia via the Crimea Bridge.
The highly complicated mission began in the early hours of Wednesday morning after the roadway arch docked at its final destination Tuesday.
Russian authorities temporarily restricted maritime movements across the strait prior to the start of the 72-hour installation process that will see the 227-meter segment lifted to be joined to the road portion of the 19-kilometer-long bridge. Engineers will draw on previous experience gained while installing a similar railroad arch in late August.
Once the 45-meter tall arch is raised to a height of 35 meters above water, experts will proceed to fix the structure to the bridge. Around 30 engineers, slingers, welders, surveyors, and quality control specialists will be deployed constantly throughout the entire process while switching shifts.
Twelve heavy duty jacks, each with a capacity of lifting 650 tons, are being used to raise the colossal arch from the delivery barges. Engineers have secured lifting cables and will gradually transfer the weight load onto the jacks to ensure the arch does not snap. The structure will be lifted at an average rate of 5 meters per hour to the required height of 35 meters above water.

Once completed, the 19 kilometers (12 miles) Crimean Bridge will be one of Russia’s and Europe’s largest. The bridge will have a four-lane highway as well as a two-lane railroad and will be capable of providing access for up to 40,000 vehicles and dozens of trains a day linking the two peninsulas over the Kerch Strait. It is scheduled to be opened by late 2018 and to become fully operational by 2019.

ON NETFLIX
The Incredible Jessica James: There’s nothing quite like a comic vehicle that loves its star, knows we do too, and knows why. Jim Strouse’s comedy/drama has plenty of flaws – it’s underwritten, its subplots are underdeveloped, it’s stylistically basic at best – but it’s got Jessica Williams in a leading role, being everything that’s great about Jessica Williams, and that’s far more than most movies can offer. She plays a New York City playwright and full-time force of nature, doing her best to bounce back from a bad breakup and figure out if the life she wants is in her grasp. For all its problems, this is a film that knows about coping with artistic failure (at one point, she thrills at getting a “personalized rejection letter” rather than the usual form ones) and about being a non-native New Yorker, particularly the feeling of going home and remembering all the reasons it’s not really home anymore. Some day, hopefully soon, Williams will star in a movie as great as she is. This will do until then.
ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD
Colossal: Things aren’t going so well for Gloria (Anne Hathaway): she’s been unemployed for a year, her days and nights are a blur of drinking and blackouts, she’s just been dumped and kicked out by her boyfriend (Dan Stevens), and she goes back to her hometown feeling that specific kind of failure that going back to your hometown conveys. And then, across the globe, a monster appears. More than that I won’t say; I’ll merely note that writer/director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) has a great, novel idea for a movie, but also gives it a smart script that works out all the variations and complications, and goes in genuinely unexpected directions. Not all of his risks work – but when they do, it’s doubly satisfying. (Includes deleted scene.)
The Lovers: Writer/director Azazel Jacobs (Terri) drops into this story of a disintegrated married couple, and the affairs that are about to finally end their union, at the point when most other films would end. That’s part of its genius; it’s the old saw about how every unhappy family is different, and there are telling contrasts between not only the marriage and the affairs, but between the affairs themselves. And then Jacobs flips the entire script, throwing their countdown to separation into an upheaval with the marvelous premise of a couple accidentally rediscovering their passion, and cheating on their lovers with their spouse. Yet even this isn’t played as the dopey comedy it could’ve been; Jacobs and his enviable cast (which includes Debra Winger, Tracy Letts, Melora Walters, and Aiden Gillen) play the humanity of the situation, its tenderness and its sadness, with an evenness and purpose that’s sort of astonishing. It’s a quiet little movie, but it lingers. (Includes audio commentary and featurettes.)
Sleight: A year ago, Bo (Jacob Latimore) was a scholarship student and amateur magician with a bright future. But after a family tragedy, he’s doing what it takes: working for a cheerful yet ruthless drug dealer (Dule Hull, very good), a side hustle that quickly gets out of his control. J.D. Dillard’s smooth-as-silk crime drama is an efficient piece of work; even if you can sense the dominoes lining up in its first half a bit too neatly, you can’t help but feel for this good guy who’s doing some unquestionably bad things. Latimore puts across the depths of his desperation, and while his romance with Seychelle Gabriel’s Holly is a bit of a drag on the picture’s pace, they’re sweet and likable together. And the climax is a sure-fire crowd pleaser. (No bonus features.)
Obit: “Oh, you’re an obit writer,” they are asked. “Isn’t it depressing?” But that’s what’s wild about working the obit desk at the New York Times, according to Vanessa Gould’s wonderful new documentary – “It’s almost never depressing.” You see, obituaries are less stories of death than a celebration of life, and Gould’s thoughtful film is equally interested in the people who write them and the logistics of their process: the formula (including the fascinating story of why they always have a second-graf confirmation), the reporting, the fact-checking, the questions of representation, length, layout, placement. Obit is loosely structured but well organized; it frankly doesn’t seem like there’s a full movie’s worth of story to tell, but Gould keeps finding angles, subjects, and compelling anecdotes. And ultimately, it’s a thought-provoking commentary on what it means to lose a public figure – and to acknowledge their mortality and humanness. (Includes trailer.)

McIlroy, and sporting a gleaming gold ring on his finger, has not competed since sharing seventh place behind Sergio Garcia at the Masters.
However, McIlroy left Augusta very disappointed with the golf ball he had been using and has corrected that signing a 10-year full 14-club deal that also includes specifically using a TaylorMade ball and bag.
This deal comes after McIlroy resigned what was believed a $ US 200m new deal with Nike clothing just prior to the Masters.
McIlroy’s long-time manager, Sean O’Flaherty said the TaylorMade deal was “Mongo” and it is bigger than any other TaylorMade deal including World No. this week’s Players Championship at Ponte Vedre in Florida.
“I left Augusta very unhappy having tried many combinations this year that just were not working and it was the ball that led me to this point of signing on with TaylorMade”, said McIlroy.
“I got back from our honeymoon on Thursday and I have been testing the new clubs since then at the Bears Club.
“I am using the M2 driver I used at the Masters and the same fairway woods while they very kindly made me a prototype set of blades that I’ve put in the bag which are beautiful.
“So, it seems like with everything that has gone on the last few weeks with getting married and teaming with TaylorMade and everything, it seems like everything is very settled.
“There is not that many question marks going on in my life now and I feel everything’s exactly where it is meant to be, and if you feel like that off the golf course, then I can only imagine that it will help going forward”.
And while life is very rosy for McIlroy he provided evidence that all is well between Garcia and Padraig Harrington as McIlroy revealed an image on his mobile he had taken at his own wedding of Garcia tucking his head into below Harrington’s neck and further evidence, if you needed it, the duo has made up.
“Now this is not for anyone to take a photo but this should answer any issues that Padraig and Sergio may have”, said McIlroy smiling.
“I said to Sergio can I tweet that and he said maybe not, so that is how close they got.
“I had seen them chatting and I jokingly said to Padraig he is a sore loser and they both started to laugh, so it is all good between them.
“Things get blown out of proportion some time but then they have played so many Ryder Cup’s together and while they have had their battles over the years they just seemed to get on so well at the wedding.”
The PGA Tour was also celebrating but not McIlroy’s wedding but the announcement that FedEx have agreed to extend their involvement in the FedEx Cup Series a further 1o years.
And McIlroy, as the reigning FedEx Cup champion was presented with his own bobble head with the FedEx Cup trophy.
The US Navy launched its second America class amphibious assault ship, the ‘USS Tripoli’, from its shipyard in Mississippi this week, months ahead of schedule.
Timelapse video from the shipbuilding facility shows the vessel being transported to the dry dock at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) shipyard before launch.
Designed to carry the F-35B fighter jet, the warship was launched some 13 weeks ahead of the original construction schedule, according to the military shipbuilding company.
The ‘USS Tripoli’ – officially designated Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA) 7 – was transferred from land to the company’s floating dry dock in Pascagoula, Mississippi on April 8.
Some 247 jacking and pallet cars were used to support the displacement of the 45,693 metric ton ship during the 19-hour operation, according to the US Navy, who described the moving process as one of the most “well-executed” they’ve seen on a larger ship.
The ship was successfully launched on May 1 after the dry-dock was flooded to submerge the ship, floating it for the first time. Delivery is expected at the end of 2018.

The ‘USS Tripoli’ is capable of accommodating up to nine F-35Bs, can execute vertical or short takeoffs and vertical landings without requiring a catapult launcher. It will also be able to carry some 1,800 US Marines and amphibious warfare equipment.
Tripoli offers an enlarged hangar deck, enhanced maintenance facilities, increased fuel capacity and additional storerooms to provide the fleet with a platform “optimized for aviation capabilities,” according to the US Navy.
The lead ship in this class, the ‘USS America’ (LHA-6), was commissioned into the US Navy in October 2014 and is lined up for its maiden deployment later this year.
Meanwhile, construction on the next ship in the planned fleet of 11, ‘Bougainville’ (LHA 8), is scheduled to begin in late 2018.

The premise of Colossal is so wacky and refreshing that every minute of it surprises you. A woman moves back to her hometown after breaking up with her boyfriend, and finds that she is somehow psychically linked to a giant monster wreaking havoc in Seoul. How it would follow up on such a unique premise? I admit I wondered that going into the film, but it delivered. And it worked so wonderfully because I had virtually no knowledge of the film going in — the marketing up until then had been ingeniously discrete and mysterious.
That may change for those who haven’t seen Colossal yet, with the newest trailer released for the Anne Hathaway film. Don’t read further if you don’t want spoilers.
Up through the first third of the film, we’re pretty familiar with the premise. Hathaway is an unemployed alcoholic whose boyfriend (Dan Stevens) breaks up with her and kicks her out of his apartment, forcing her to move back to her hometown. Soon after she moves home, a giant monster starts terrorizing Seoul, South Korea. Shockingly, she sees the monster imitate one of her own ticks — scratching the top of her head — and she realizes that she’s psychically linked to the monster, able to control it when it appears in Seoul. She reveals it to her friends (Jason Sudeikis, Austin Stowell, Tim Blake Nelson), and chaos and comedy — presumably ensues.
That’s all that has been revealed in previous trailers, and though it seems like a lengthy premise, it does not nearly foreshadow the surprisingly dark twists and turns that Colossal takes you through. But this newest trailer, seen below, kind of does.
Again, spoilers for Colossal in the trailer.
Admittedly, some eagle-eyed movie fans may have noticed this giant robot in a new spoiler-y poster that released this week.
Thankfully the trailer doesn’t reveal much beyond “there’s a giant robot too! Ahhh!” but it’s still a major plot point that acted as a great twist in the film.
So, why is Anne Hathaway’s monster slapping the robot? And why are people saying it’s a good monster? I cannot emphasize enough that you should see this whimsical treat of a movie. If not to find out why there’s a giant robot, at least do it to tide yourself over until Pacific Rim: Uprising comes out and you can see some big-budget robots versus monsters.
Colossal is directed by Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo, and is currently playing in theaters.
