If plié and arabesque seem too boring, try to blend in some twerk and fitness. Colombian twin dancers have turned a fusion of classical moves, workout and some sexy moves into a viral hit, with the speed of a Macarena.
For those tired of exhausting gym sessions, professional ballet dancers Alejandra and Andrea Salamanca, from Colombia, have come up with a more fun way to get fitter.
The twins’ routine became viral after Puerto Rican reggaeton star Daddy Yankee shared their video on his Instagram page. The video of the sisters dancing to the singer’s hit ‘Dura,’ in tutus, has garnered over 6.2 million views.
After dancing with troupes in Canada and in the US, Alejandra and Andrea returned to their native Colombia to open their own dance studio ‘Upstage.’ In order to attract more clients, the twins invented a ‘ballet fitness’ method.
“It is a discipline, which mixes classical technique, some movements of classical technique, but there is also a fusion with fitness movements,” Alejandra explains.
The two post their ballet practices to Latino music on their Instagram accounts, with thousands of followers.

Decades have passed since the bulk of marijuana cultivation in the Americas shifted from Colombia up to Mexico. But the tides are turning again. This time, suited businesspeople, not drug cartels, are betting on a lucrative Colombian weed crop, bound for markets around the world. The investors? Many are coming from Canada.
Legislation passed in 2017 provided a framework for commercial medical cannabis cultivation, and at least six companies surpassed the licensing processing by late in the year and planted their first seedlings in December. They formed the Colombian Association of Cannabis Industries in late 2017. Of these six, three companies are headquartered in Toronto — though they were born in Colombia — underscoring the promising partnership shaping up between growers in Colombia, a nation of vintage renown for quality weed, and investors in Canada, the world’s top source of venture capital for cannabis companies. Tens of millions of dollars of Canadian capital have flowed into Colombian companies, allowing them to build robust operations ahead of any revenue.
It’s like the starting gun is just going off now.
Mark Monaghan, Canadian financier
There’s a lot in this for Colombia too. On the same mountains where the high-grade pot of Pablo Escobar’s early empire once grew, a corporate crop is sprouting that could mean big money for the South American country. Growers plan to exploit the country’s equatorial sun, tropical rain, robust cut-flower industry and indigenous marijuana strains to conquer a budding global market, as nations across the Western Hemisphere begin to open to medical marijuana products. This time around, Colombia will produce pharmaceutical-grade oils and extracts for prescription use — not dried herbs.
“It’s like the starting gun is just going off now,” says Mark Monaghan, a Canadian financier and director of Khiron Life Sciences Corp., a Colombian cannabis company headquartered in Toronto.
Khiron launched in Colombia on December 7 at Bogota’s Marriott Hotel to an audience of sharply dressed Colombian medical professionals, invited guests and Canadian investors. CEO and founder Alvaro Torres declared the company’s goals to provide medical cannabis extracts of the highest pharmaceutical standards, help doctors understand the legitimacy of cannabis products, open a series of branded pain clinics to prescribe and dispense cannabis in Colombia, then branch out to other emerging marijuana markets in Latin America. Torres, a former infrastructure engineer, says in an interview that he hopes to buck the trend of Latin American countries selling cheap raw materials for refinement in wealthier nations, and to instead sell finished products straight to consumers. Khiron was born, he says, from a chance meeting on a Panamanian beach with Monaghan, who described the eagerness of Canadian investors to put money into cannabis ventures abroad.
The flow of capital from Canada to Colombia for the cannabis industry isn’t really surpising. Alan Brochstein, founder of cannabis industry business news services 420investor.com and NewCannabisVentures.com, describes Canada as the world’s only advanced capital market for financing cannabis ventures, a place where stigma has faded and effective business models have been developed.
And Colombia is responding to that interest. More businesses have recently applied for licenses to join the six firms already in the Colombian industry. “We’ve been impressed that the country is totally open for business,” says Christian Scovenna, investor and director of Canadian venture capital firm High Hampton Holdings, who flew to Bogota for the Khiron launch. “They’re paving the way for other countries in South America.”
The coming year will be a “period of consolidation” for Colombian cannabis companies, says Rodrigo Gomez, president of the cannabis industry association. Growers and refiners, he adds, will begin testing products and honing in on a marketable portfolio. “Investment is coming to Colombia because of the quality of the terrain,” says Gomez, a former director of Colombia’s Pharmaceutical Industry Chamber.
Growers in Colombia can cultivate cannabis year-round for a fraction of the cost paid by growers in Canada, or Washington State or Colorado, where they use warehouses, high-powered sun lamps, and climate control. “You could grow bananas in New York,” explains Patricio Stocker, CEO of PharmaCielo, another Toronto-based Colombian cannabis company. “But you need to generate a tropical climate.”
Brochstein, of 420investor, agrees with Colombia’s potential, but worries that the country’s prospects could be dampened by lack of demand in Latin America, coupled with new supply from other freshly deregulating Latin American markets. “If it turns out Colombia has better genetics, then it will be interesting,” he says.
PharmaCielo, which was founded on a gamble in 2014 before Colombia legalized cannabis production, has spent two years collecting cannabis breeds from rural farmers, breeds that once went to drug cartels and made Colombia’s reputation for high-grade illicit weed. “You have this country where you can find unique strains, historically used for medicinal and religious purposes by indigenous communities,” says Stocker, who was previously CEO of DaimlerChrysler Colombia. PharmaCielo began to register collected strains with Colombia’s Ministry of Health in December. The company board includes executives from Philip Morris, a former World Medical Association chairman, two Colombian flower growers and a Canadian retailer. It aims to export cannabis products, first to Canada and, later, elsewhere abroad.
The company has planted its first crop throughout 30 acres of open-air greenhouses in Rionegro, a city in the hinterlands of Medellin. Nearby, PharmaCielo’s laboratory is geared up to produce the first medical extracts from its cannabis crop. Elsewhere in the country, the company has partnered with rural communities for cannabis cultivation and dreams of expanding its own operations to thousands of acres soon.
It expects its first commercial sales and exports in 2018.
“We want to become one of the world’s largest suppliers,” Stocker said. “This may become a very, very huge model.”

A political party consisting of former members of the guerrilla group FARC will make its electoral debut in Colombia’s upcoming legislative and presidential elections, as part of a historic peace agreement with the government.
Rebranded as the Revolutionary Alternative Common Force (formerly Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) in order to preserve its iconic acronym, the FARC party on Saturday launched its campaign for this year’s elections, vowing to represent the “millions and millions of poor who have never counted” in Colombia.
Rodrigo Londono Echeverri, the former rebel leader long known by his nom de guerre “Timochenko,” announced his candidacy for the presidency with a promise to “create the conditions for the birth of a new Colombia.”
FARC’s political platform focuses on combatting poverty and corruption. The militants who laid down their arms under a 2016 peace agreement have already turned to communal farming and other “collective” projects as they seek to integrate into society.
In a video released by Ruptly Federico Montes, a FARC leader in Caqueta, said that the group will promote change in Colombia through education and new models of agricultural and economic cooperation.
“The idea is that we have here an experience that we want to make public, for people to realise how more than 200 people live together, working and producing within a space of only 18 hectares. This invites us to rethink models such as extensive livestock farming, models such as agro-industry, monocultures that do not allow opportunities to be generated for large sections of society,” said Montes. “Everything we do here, we would want to replicate on a bigger scale with different sections of society, until this idea, maybe, serves as a development model for every country,” he added.

The newly-formed party hopes to receive 500,000 votes in March’s elections, giving FARC three or four seats in the Senate. However, the latest polls suggest little support for the party. In November, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Londono signed a historic peace deal, disbanding the rebel group and integrating it into Colombia’s political system. As part of the peace deal, FARC admitted that it had committed serious crimes – while also insisting that government forces had participated in equally heinous acts of violence.

At least five police officers have been killed and dozens injured in a bomb attack as they gathered for their morning briefing in Colombia’s coastal city of Barranquilla. Authorities suspect the “act of barbarity” was perpetrated by one of the country’s numerous criminal gangs as a retaliation against a recent police crackdown, Reuters reports. One suspect has already been arrested, but authorities believe more people could be involved and have offered a reward of 50 million pesos (some $ 18,000) for any useful information about the perpetrators.

For the past six weeks, a tangled case of complex fraud leveled against two prominent tech entrepreneurs unfolded in federal court. On December 26, the trial’s defendants, Omar Amanat and Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, were found guilty on numerous accounts of fraudulent charges, as originally reported by Bloomberg.
For both Amanat and Tuzman, the conviction is a striking fall from power: The two defendants have made millions of dollars and led successful entrepreneurial careers that have all but unraveled over the course of the past year.
The court case revealed a series of convoluted legal infractions performed by Amanat and Tuzman in their work with the presently insolvent video-technology company, KIT Digital, a former multi-million dollar leader in the cloud-based video management industry.
According to Bloomberg, Tuzman, who served as the company’s CEO, and Amanat, who dealt in a series of company investments, covered up losses, inflated the value of shares, and defrauded investors.
The pair are expected to serve a minimum of a decade in jail and their sentencing will be delivered in April 2018.
Here’s a breakdown of Amanat and Tuzman’s descent:
By the time he was 30 years old, Omar Amanat had sold off his brokerage firm, Tradespace, for $ 100 million. Amanat was already flush in wealth and had turned his interests towards philanthropy and film production, flaunting connections with A-list celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. He was known for his lavish lifestyle, an tendency for quoting the Persian poet Rumi, and appearing in designer garb alongside his wife, supermodel Helena Houdova, at high-profile events.

But despite Amanat’s effortless exterior, a series of sensational controversies had begun to dog his career.
In 2014, a multi-million-dollar real estate deal in Thailand collapsed amid a lurid lawsuit with Amanat and his business partner, the Russian oligarch Vladislav Doronin.
Two years later, Amanat’s name was once more featured prominently in the papers. He had leased his lavish Hampton home to a hedge-fund trader, Brett Barna, who allegedly trashed the $ 20 million estate in a widely publicized madcap party.
The New York Times reported that Amanat had threatened to sue Barna for $ 1 million and was hounding him for thousands of dollars in damages.
But Amanat’s threats were short-lived. Days after he had threatened to sue, Amanat received a visit in his New Jersey home from the FBI, which charged Amanat with multiple counts of fraud.
Right now, Amanat awaits his sentencing in jail.
On his personal website, he describes the trial’s outcome as an “injustice in America.”
“The facts of this case will all be made plain to see shortly,” Amanat wrote. “You’ve only seen snippets. You’ve only seen what they want you to see.”
Kaleil Isaza Tuzman is considered one of the preeminent figures of the dot-com boom.
A Harvard graduate, Tuzman worked as an analyst for five years on Wall Street, before launching his own company, govWorks.com, which is featured in the documentary ‘Startup.com.’
YouTube
Tuzman, who is considered an expert in the field of digital media, went on to join KIT Digital as the company’s chief executive.
Tuzman was charged with fraud for his involvement with KIT Digital in 2015. He was reportedly apprehended on a business trip in Bogotá, Colombia by Colombian officials, which had been sent to arrest Tuzman at the behest of the US government. Tuzman spent 10 months in “La Picota,” a notorious local prison.
Tuzman described his prison time to the New York Times as a harrowing ordeal: The former CEO claims he was abused, raped, and threatened at knifepoint by Colombian authorities. Multiple attempts on Tuzman’s behalf by his attorneys to the US Embassy were met to no avail.
He was later extradited to the US where he faced trial alongside Amanat.

Gov. García Girón called it justice, insisting that Benkos posed a threat to his mineral-rich, New World province. But to Benkos’ followers, the execution of their leader on March 3, 1621, remains to this day one of the greatest betrayals in Colombia’s history. Someyears before Girón was appointed, his predecessor, Géronimo de Suazo, had signed a peace deal with Benkos that gave the African prince–turned–slave his freedom — at least until Girón ignored the agreement and executed his rival.
Episodes like the betrayal of Benkos Biohó are part of what’s shaped a history of distrust in Colombia’s government.
“The government put the personality of its leader above the ethical principles of the accord. … That’s why they didn’t respect it,” says Bernardino Perez, a local historian in San Basilio de Palenque, the town Benkos founded in the Maria Mountains south of Cartagena. “Our town suffers every day because they didn’t respect those accords.”

Benkos Biohó was born into a royal family that ruled islands off the coast of what is now Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. He was a prince destined to become king until Portuguese slave traders pillaged the archipelago, enslaved him and his people and shipped them to the Spanish province of Cartagena in South America. He was around 25 years old at the time of his capture. As a slave in Cartagena, the young prince inspired a rebellion among other Africans by communicating through songs as well as maps braided into women’s hair. The rebellion was a success: Benkos and about 100 othersfled to the mountains, claimed territory and began an unflinching guerrilla campaign against the Spanish.
Benkos staved off Spanish attacks for years, absorbing more runaways and eventually founding San Basilio de Palenque. Its residents preserve theirtraditional African heritage andspeak Palenquero, a Spanish-based Creole. They claim that their community was the first free town in Latin America. Finally, around 1603, de Suazo extended an olive branch, made a peace agreement and ended the fighting.
So what did Benkos in?In Antonio Prada Fortul’s historical novel Benkos Biohó, Cartagena’s new leadership under Girón set a trap, luring Benkos into the walled Spanish city where a guard told the rebel leader that they had arrested some of his men on charges that would result in their execution. Benkos offered to surrender himself and serve some jail time in exchange for his men’s freedom. Deal. But when Benkos went to turn himself in, he heard gunfire and learned that his men had been shot. Hours later, he was in custody and sentenced to death by dismemberment.
Latin America has a history of weak institutions and caudillos — strongmen — who rule above the law. According to Perez, episodes like the betrayal of Benkos Biohó are part of what’s shaped a history of distrust in Colombia’s government.
Some see echoes of the Benkos betrayal in recent events. In the mid-1980s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a Marxist-communist guerrilla movement, formed a political party under the banner Patriotic Union as an early step in a peace process with the Colombian government. But right-wing militias hired assassins to exterminate party leaders, as well as hundreds of rank-and-file members. FARC headed back into the jungle to continue an armed struggle that lasted another 30 years.
In June, FARC laid down its weapons and renounced armed rebellion against the state following a peace treaty known as the Havana Accords, signed in November 2016 with the government of President Juan Manuel Santos. Now, as FARC once again tries to transition into a peaceful, nonarmed political party, the question remains: Will the government continue to honor the treaty? Or will a change of power in next year’s 2018 presidential elections pave the way for a reversal of the deal? Presidential hopefuls like Senator Iván Duque already are talking about how they want to alter the terms of the Havana Accords.
“I see a lot of parallels with the present and what happened with the Spanish,” Perez tells OZY. “You see the government trying to preserve the [peace] accords so that no one gets betrayed, and that what happened with the FARC in the 1980s doesn’t happen again.”
These days, Colombia seems like a schizophrenic man trying to decide what it means to be fair to a group of weary old Marxists responsible for a fifth of the country’s massacres and the lion’s share of kidnappings and land mine killings. If FARC leaders — the Benkos Biohós of today — get their peace deal pulled out from beneath their political platform — to get their political limbs scattered about the square, so to speak — some Colombians would see a terrible and earth-shattering betrayal. Others would probably see justice as usual.

Video footage has emerged of Peru and Colombia players apparently conspiring to fix their FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia qualifier to end in a draw – a result which benefitted both sides.
The teams played out a 1-1 draw in the Estadio Nacional de Lima in the Peruvian capital on Wednesday. James Rodriguez put Colombia 1-0 up on 56 minutes before Peru leveled 20 minutes later through Paolo Guerrero.

That result saw Colombia finish fourth in the South America qualifying group, gaining an automatic place for Russia 2018, with fifth-place Peru gaining a play-off match against New Zealand.
Both teams advanced at the expense of rivals Chile, who lost 3-0 to Brazil in Sao Paulo on the same night in a match that kicked off at the same time, and finished sixth on goal difference.
Footage has surfaced that suggests Colombia captain Radamel Falcao knew of the fact Chile were losing in Brazil and clandestinely told Peru players, with his hand covering his mouth, to make sure the result stayed level.
Although a win for Peru would have given them automatic qualification, had they conceded one more goal they would have been out altogether. Commentators have since referred to the incident as the “Pact of Lima.”
After the match, Falcao revealed to reporters that he did in fact make the Chile result known to Peru players, but remained adamant that both sides fought for the win over 90 minutes.
“We knew what was happening in the other matches, we were playing with [the knowledge of] the other results and in that moment [I tried] to transmit that [to Peru]. Nothing more,” the former Manchester United striker told reporters, the Independent reported.
“I think Peru has been a worthy rival, they fought for 90 minutes just like us. The match was very tight. We suffered a lot but in the end we did it.”

Peru midfielder Renato Tapia attested that Colombian players approached his team about the draw, telling Panamericana TV: “In the last five minutes, the Colombians approached us. They knew what the situation was in the other games.”
“So we managed the game as we needed to… I spoke with Radamel, who told me we were both qualified [as things stood].”

The UN Security Council is preparing to establish a new mission in Colombia to help former FARC rebels become part of mainstream society after they laid down their weapons under a historic peace deal, diplomats said Friday.
Britain has circulated a draft resolution that would set up the new political mission and the council is scheduled to vote on the measure on July 10.
The council last year set up a first mission to oversee disarmament of the leftist rebels. On Tuesday, that was completed when the last of some 7,000 weapons were handed over.
With that phase of the accord completed, UN envoy Jean Arnault told the council that the “first and most urgent challenge” was now the reintegration of 10,000 combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) into society.
Among the rebels, “a deep sense of uncertainty prevails as to their physical security following disarmament and their socioeconomic future,” said Arnault.
Both the Colombian government and the FARC rebels have asked the Security Council to authorize the new mission, Arnault said.
The British-drafted resolution would establish the new UN presence “to verify the FARC’s political, social and economic reintegration, and also implementation of their security guarantees,” said a Security Council diplomat who asked not to be named.
It would ask UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to provide a report to the council in August with detailed recommendations on how the mission should work.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for reaching the historic deal with the FARC, ending decades of conflict that have left 260,000 dead.
