Ex-England and Liverpool forward Stan Collymore continued his Russia 2018 coverage as he met up with former Aston Villa teammate Mark Bosnich in Moscow to talk all things World Cup.

Bosnich, who also played for Manchester United and at international level for Australia, met with Stan to talk Spain’s chances at the World Cup. 

Spain had appeared as one of the pre-tournament favorites until manager Julen Lopetegui was relieved of his duties just two days before the team’s opening World Cup game against Portugal.

However, Bosnish, who won the Premier League title with United, thinks the decision can work in Spain’s favor. 

“It’s not a good thing to lose your manager on the eve of the World Cup, but when you’ve got such a good team, it can galvanize you,” Bosnich told Stan on a walk around Moscow’s Manezhnaya Ploshchad. 

“Because people are saying there’s no way you’re going to do well now, and that takes away a little bit of the pressure, because you’ve got that ready made excuse,” he added.

Coutinho, 25, is desperate to complete a move to Barcelona this month with claims in Spain suggesting he’s gone on strike.

That comes after he was left out the squad to face Burnley on new Year’s Day.

Hazard, meanwhile, is being lined up by Real Madrid with his dad claiming Eden has rejected a contract in case the Bernabeu giants came calling.

But ex-Liverpool striker Collymore has no doubt on who would be the biggest loser if both deals went through.

He told the Mirror: “Will Real Madrid make their move for Eden Hazard this month? That is the big question for Chelsea fans.

“If the Spanish giants do come for the Blues playmaker then Roman Abramovich needs to reject their bid out of hand.

“Chelsea don’t have the embarrassment of riches Manchester City can call on in those floating forward positions and losing the Belgian would be more damaging for them than losing Philippe Coutinho would be for Liverpool.

“Even if Hazard does want to go they must keep him at all costs, at least until the end of the season.”

There was no sign of Coutinho as Liverpool nicked a 2-1 win at Burnley with the official word being that he has a groin problem.

Asked about the Brazilian’s absence, boss Jurgen Klopp said: “Him and Mo Salah are injured.

“They are a doubt for Everton.”

Collymore, who played for the Villans between 1997 and 2000, says he would streak around the home ground of bitter rivals Birmingham City for a Championship play-off spot. 

Saturday’s goalless draw at home to leaves Villa sitting fifth in the table.

When asked by a fan whether manager Steve Bruce would lead the club to promotion, Collymore replied: “I’ll run naked around St Andrew’s for top six.”

Villa were lucky to draw against Millwall and had keeper Sam Johnstone to thank for saving a point.

The Lions managed eight shots on target and Bruce admitted his side struggled to match their opponents. 

He said: “Sometimes, you have to say ‘well done’ to the opposition.

“We found it difficult against a big, tough, physical Millwall team. 

“We found it difficult in the first phases of winning the challenges. 

“But we must not forget – and I don’t want to make excuses – but we are without our big headers of the ball in Terry, Jedinak and Kodjia and we found it tough and we then ended up getting sucked into the way they played and didn’t play enough when we had it.

“It’s one of the frustrating days where you take a point, move on and get back on the training ground on Monday morning.”

There promises to be a lot of drama at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the 2010 World Cup winners Spain have been placed in the same group as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who teamed up with RT for the 2018 World Cup Draw coverage, said that Group B is going to be a “kicker” at the event in Russia. The legendary Dane had to overcome a heavy blizzard to deliver his analysis of the Friday draw as he was broadcasting live from the rooftop of a Moscow hotel overlooking the Kremlin.

“We’ve got Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Iran. Iran has done really well in their qualifications. Morocco is a great team as well. But this Portugal v. Spain game, that’s one of the games really to look forward to,” Schmeichel said. Spain is among the favorites of any tournament they appear in, but Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo, “a player who can do anything even if the team isn’t playing well,” he added.

Another member of the RT crew with a rich footballing background, ex-Liverpool star Stan Collymore, focused on the World Cup’s opening match, in which hosts Russia will take on Saudi Arabia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. The encounter is a “fascinating one on so many levels – not just the footballing level, but political level. Of course, there’s loads of stuff going on in the Middle East at the moment,” he said.

With the two teams being the lowest ranked among the 32 participants, “from Russia’s perspective it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the Russian public behind you; to get some confidence for the team; to win the game and start the tournament on the front foot,” Collymore said.

England vs Belgium ‘will capture everybody’s imagination’ – Southgate

Another quartet that stands out after the draw is Group G, with Belgium, Panama, Tunisia and England.

“There’s lot that we need to find out about,” England manager Gareth Southgate told RT after learning the names of his opponents. “We’ve never played Panama before in our history. That’s an exciting game. And, obviously, Tunisia have come up through African qualifying, which is very, very tough. But we have to say we haven’t seen as much of those teams as we have Belgium,” he said. Southgate described Belgium as “hugely impressive team,” saying that the match against them “will capture everybody’s imagination at home. But the other two games are the one that we’ve got to get right to have a chance of getting through.”

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez told RT that it was “difficult to find some words” after the World Cup draw. “I’ve spent 21 years in England; in the British game. I’ve worked with some of the players that they have in the England camp,” he said. With most of the Belgian roster also playing for English clubs, “it’s going to be a lot of chemistry; a lot of banter in the Premier League dressing rooms between Belgian players and English players,” he said.

According to Martinez, Belgium’s game against England would be “a really good opportunity to see two generations with a lot of quality and a lot technical ability; to see how we adapt at the World Cup and what level we can give.”

‘Hands shaking, its terrifying’: Schmeichel on his draw experience

Even seemingly simple things come with hazards. Schmeichel described what can go wrong and turn into an international scandal at the draw, even despite the ceremony looking to be quite easy. “I was hosting the Champions League draw. And we had a rehearsal. One of the balls popped up and went inside the table.”

“You can’t redo the draw,” Schmeichel said, talking about the draw ceremony. “You know you’re live on TV.”

Stan Collymore, a football star and a popular sports blogger, has joined RT as a special host for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Liverpool’s former centre-forward will travel to the host cities and meet with players and fans.

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup will be held in Russia from June 17 to July 2 of this year. The matches will be played in four different cities: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi.

Collymore, who was also a centre-forward for Aston Villa and Leicester City, is planning to visit all four cities and meet with football fans and players.

He shared his feelings about Russia with RT: “The stadia look great, the cities look great, the people are like you and me.”

“So I’m here, hosting RT coverage around the Confed Cup, visiting stadia, meeting people and going off piste to report my findings, so that like in Ukraine 2012, and the two World Cups I’ve reported on, fans can take what I say and bank on it. Reliable, honest information,” he added.

On Sunday Collymore traveled to St. Petersburg to watch a shootout between a Ronaldinho-led squad of FIFA legends and a team of Russian football stars, in which the latter won.
