Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft has successfully touched down on the surface of asteroid Ryugu to accomplish one of its ultimate goals: collect samples for scientists back on Earth. The probe has briefly landed on the asteroid to fire a bullet into its surface and kick up dust, rocks and any other debris that it can collect. Hayabusa2 has been hovering around Ryugu since mid-2018 and even dropped two landers on the floating rock to study its surface and take photos.

It started its descent on February 21st, 6AM Japan time, taking photos of what it saw as it approached the asteroid. This photo was one of the last it captured before it fired the bullet:

Since it lost contact with its ground team when it touched down, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency had to wait for it take flight again and restore communications. It only took the spacecraft a second to fire that bullet and take off again, though, so we’re now just waiting to hear if it has successfully collected samples.

This operation was supposed to happen back in October, but the ground team discovered from Ryugu’s surface has much bigger gravel than they thought. They had to perform experiments in the lab before they give the operation a go. Now that this attempt proved successful, they’re expected to fire an explosive into the asteroid later this year to create a crater and collect additional fragments.

Hayabusa2 is scheduled to leave Ryugu in December 2019 and to be back home a year later. The samples it brings back could shed light on what the early solar system was like and could give us more information on the possibility that asteroids seeded Earth with organic matter that led to life on our planet.

  • The United Explorer Card offers up to 65,000 miles for new applicants: 40,000 United miles after spending $ 2,000 in the first three months, and another 25,000 miles after spending a total of $ 10,000 in the first six months.
  • Usually, the card only offers 40,000 miles unless you’re specially targeted for something higher.
  • The bonus is enough for a round-trip flight to Europe, or even a ticket in United’s new Polaris business class.
  • The offer is only good until January 8; after that, it drops to a lower amount. If you have a use for United miles, now is the time to apply.

The best way to get a ton of frequent flyer miles quickly — aside from booking an incredibly expensive and long flight — is signing up for a new credit card and earning its sign-up bonus. This style of “travel hacking” is basically a way get flights or hotel fees for free; you can get a massive haul of points just for opening a new card and spending money that you were going to spend anyway.

Pokemon Go news: Vatican launches new Pokemon – How to collect ALL the Catholic saints? https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-vatican-launches-new-pokemon-how-to-collect-all-the-catholic-saints/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-vatican-launches-new-pokemon-how-to-collect-all-the-catholic-saints/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 05:38:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-vatican-launches-new-pokemon-how-to-collect-all-the-catholic-saints/

Pokemon Go has been downloaded 800 million times and raised approximately 1.5 billion in revenue since its 2016 launch.

Many have naturally attempted to imitate the innovative explore and collect gameplay.

Follow JC Go is arguably unique among the versions.

For instead of catching monsters, the Christian religion-based game sees players begin a spiritual journey centred on Catholicism.

Like Pokemon Go, a player’s smartphone camera records the environment, then inserts augmented digital characters.

Users progress through the game by correctly answering religious questions when they meet a religious character.

Saints and other biblical characters are collected as you go about your business in your neighbourhood.

Designed by The Vatican, the game users you with collecting famous religious figures to join your “evangelisation team”.

Players also collect virtual water, food and spirituality to boost their in-game health.

Follow JC Go encourages players to worship by prompting them to pause and pray when they pass a church.

And if they are near a hospital users could be asked to pray for the sick.

And another innovative feature allows users to donate to charity via the app.

The Spanish language game launched on October 19, and Italian, English and Portuguese versions are expected soon.

Its creators’ the goal is to teach players of all ages about the Catholic faith.

And the Pope is reportedly said to have given his blessing to the project.

“You know, Francis is not a very technological person, but he was in awe, he understood the idea, what we were trying to do: combine technology with evangelisation,” Ricardo Grzona, executive director of Fundacion Ramon Pane, told Catholic news site Crux Now.

43 designers, theologians, Bible experts, and Church historians are thought to have invested 32,000 hours of work into the app since August 2016.

The game reportedly received $ 500,000 (£39,064) in sponsorship and private donations.

Android users have however given the app a mediocre 3.2/5 rating.

Reviewer JR SV, wrote: “The best app I have on the phone, I feel happy to follow the path of the Lord from my smartphone.”

Will another gave it one star, writing: “I wanted to burn heretics, but it wasn’t possible.”

Less controversial iterations of Pokemon Go have included The Walking Dead: Our World, Ghostbusters World and Jurassic World Alive.

Apple is using backpacks to collect map data in San Francisco https://briefnews.eu/apple-is-using-backpacks-to-collect-map-data-in-san-francisco/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-is-using-backpacks-to-collect-map-data-in-san-francisco/#respond Sun, 14 Oct 2018 03:47:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-is-using-backpacks-to-collect-map-data-in-san-francisco/

Apple’s quest to improve Maps’ accuracy appears to include some on-foot action. Former Engadget writer Dante Cesa has posted photos of an Apple Maps worker carrying a backpack loaded with cameras, LiDAR sensors and other equipment as he walked through San Francisco. It’s not certain what the exact goal was, but MacRumors speculated that he was collecting details for pedestrian directions.

There’s certainly precedent for it. Google has spent years using Street View Trekkers and similar gear to collect imagery and data for areas where cars either provide incomplete information or simply aren’t an option. This could ensure that Maps points you to pedestrian-only paths more often, or that it knows just which crosswalks to take.

Apple started offering enhanced map detail with iOS 12, but you may not see the on-foot info for a while. The company’s overall map upgrade is only poised to cover northern California by the fall, and it’s not certain that this will include backpack data. Nonetheless, it won’t be surprising if Maps is soon more trustworthy when you’re content to walk where you’re going.

Fortnite Fate skin live on Mobile, PS4, Switch, Xbox One – here’s how to collect https://briefnews.eu/fortnite-fate-skin-live-on-mobile-ps4-switch-xbox-one-heres-how-to-collect/ https://briefnews.eu/fortnite-fate-skin-live-on-mobile-ps4-switch-xbox-one-heres-how-to-collect/#respond Sun, 24 Jun 2018 02:13:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fortnite-fate-skin-live-on-mobile-ps4-switch-xbox-one-heres-how-to-collect/

Some of the best cosmetic items are released by Epic Games on the weekend.

And tonight has seen the latest Battle Royale design make its debut – that of the Fortnite  Fate skin.

The new outfit is available now in the in-game item shop and match along nicely with last week’s choice.

The Fortnite Omen skin was launched earlier in June, with the two designs paired together in the game’s current season 4 narrative.

The new Legendary outfit is now live to download on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Mobile platforms, although it will cost you extra.

The Fortnite Fate skin is not part of the Fortnite Battle Pass, and can’t be earned by completing the weekly challenges.

The Fate comes with its own unique Assassin look, as well as a hefty price tag.

Like all Legendary skins, the Fate costs 2,000 V-Bucks, with an accompanying axe also available to purchase.

The Fated Frame Axe Harvesting Tool completes the mystical looks but will cost fans 800 V-Bucks to add to their collection.

There’s also the new Split Wing glider to consider adding to your Fortnite Battle Royale lineup, costing another 800 V-Bucks.

While the whole collection starts to add, luckily for players it doesn’t come with any game-winning bonuses.

Epic Games make it clear that everything in their store is cosmetic only and will not provide you with a stats boost of any kind.

Dataminers actually found the Fate and Omen skins before their release, hiding in one of the game’s most recent updates.

This new item is currently listed in the Fortnite Item Shop, and will only be available for a limited amount of time.

The new Fate outfit will be available for the next two days, after which it will be switched out for another cosmetic.

The new item shop updates comes as fans prepare for the release of Fortnite Battle Royale’s fifth season.

As the Fortnite season 5 release date has been drawing nearer a mysterious countdown timer has appeared in the game.

The countdown has started appearing on TVs dotted around the Battle Royale map.

It’s led fans to thinking this could be a countdown to when the missile is finally launched by The Visitor, sparking the start of Fortnite season 5.

Epic Games have form with this.

The development team have already confirmed that more maps will be added to Fortnite in a post answering frequently asked questions.

Maybe the rumoured missile strike will be what sparks huge changes to the Battle Royale map?

Adding further weight to the missile theory is a massive underground bunker that has been discovered in the Fortnite Battle Royale map.

This area could be used to protect players from a blast.

Other Fortnite season 5 clues could include a mysterious hatch that appeared in Wailing Woods at the start of season 4 which is completely unbreakable.

Is it possible that the hatch leads to another missile shelter?

Epic Games like to share new cosmetic items on the weekend, some of which also turn out to be the most wanted among fans.

And tonight appears to have seen the latest big update to the item shop, this time adding the Fortnite Omen skin.

The new Legendary outfit is now live on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Mobile platforms, providing an intriguing new look.

The Omen comes with its own unique Cape Back Bling, as well as a hefty price tag.

Like all Legendary skins, the Omen costs 2,000 V-Bucks, which also has an additional item that can make the complete set.

The Oracle Axe Harvesting Tool completes the mystical looks but will cost fans 1,200 V-Bucks to add to their collection.

These new items are available now but comes with a countdown timer on all platforms.

To add the new pieces to your collection, fans will need to head over to the Fortnite shop within the next 48hrs.

After that, the new items will be swapped out by other skins and cosmetics, with no confirmed date for their return.

Most skins do eventually cycle back in via Epic Games’ popular online shop, but it could be away for a while.

It should be noted that while the Omen skin may catch the eye of players for its unique look, it won’t add much else.

The Legendary outfit does not harbour any special abilities, with Epic Games make it clear that everything in their store is cosmetic only.

Dataminers actually found the Omen skin before its release, hiding in one of the game’s most recent updates.

Fans also found another skin called Fate, which looks set to be released later this month.

It follows news that Fortnite developer Epic Games has dropped a huge hint about Battle Royale season 5.

Eagle-eyed Nintendo Switch players have spotted a brand new countdown clock on television sets within the game.

Currently only appearing on Nintendo Switch (via FortniteInsider), it’s believed the clocks are linked to the mysterious Visitor character.

The latest hidden loading screen featured an image of the Visitor preparing to launch a rocket.

A rocket hologram can also be spotted in the super villain lair within the Battle Royale map.

It’s possible Epic Games will release a brand new post-apocalyptic map for the next season/

The countdown timer comes to an end on Tuesday, so expect to find out more after the release of the next update.

Something similar happened during the transition between Season 3 and Season 4.

More teasers are expected to be shared by Epic Games in the coming weeks.

Phone maker BLU is settling charges that it allowed a China-based partner to collect a mountain of customers’ personal data—including full content of text messages, real-time locations, telephone numbers, contacts, and installed apps—despite promises it would keep such details private.

Under a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission announced Monday, BLU agreed to implement a “comprehensive data-security program” to prevent similar privacy leaks in the future. Both the company as a whole and co-owner and president Samuel Ohev-Zion are barred from misrepresenting the extent to which they protect the privacy and security of personal information. The company further will be subject to third-party assessments of its security program every two years for 20 years and must comply with record-keeping and compliance-monitoring requirements.

The settlement stems from research published in November 2016 by security firm Kryptowire. It found that BLU phones were transmitting a massive amount of private customer data to AdUps Technologies, a Shanghai-based provider of firmware that ran on the affected devices. Kryptowire said AdUps appeared to gather the data to help phone manufacturers and carriers track the behavior of their customers for advertising purposes.
