Google has removed browser extensions with more than 1.4 million downloads from the Chrome Web Store after third-party researchers reported they were surreptitiously tracking users’ browsing history and inserting tracking code into specific ecommerce sites they visited.
The five extensions flagged by McAfee purport to offer various services, including the ability to stream Netflix videos to groups of people, take screenshots, and automatically find and apply coupon codes. Behind the scenes, company researchers said, the extensions kept a running list of each site a user visited and took additional actions when users landed on specific sites.
The extensions sent the name of each site visited to the developer-designated site d.langhort.com, along with a unique identifier and the country, city, and zip code of the visiting device. If the site visited matched a list of ecommerce sites, the developer domain instructed the extensions to insert JavaScript into the visited page. The code modified the cookies for the site so that the extension authors receive affiliate payment for any items purchased.

Speaking on ITV’s This Morning to presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, the 74-year-old broadcaster launched into a frustrated rant about the government’s Countryside Code. She labelled it as “patronising” and said the government should be spending money more wisely.
She joined the show via video link, and when asked what she thinks of the revised codes, Janet said: “I think it’s totally patronising! I mean we’ve had a whole year of being given advice, slogans – we’ve been told how to conduct every aspect of our lives.
“As a child I grew up in central London, every weekend my mum and dad and I would get in the car and go to the seaside or go to the nearest bit of greenspace, we didn’t need a countryside code – a booklet – telling us how to get out of the car, brew up the stove, have a cup of tea and eat sandwiches out of a tin that my mum made at 5 o’clock in the morning.
“I just think it’s patronising. The other thing that bothers me about the countryside code is it says to plan your route before you go, fair enough.
“But then it says ‘stay safe’ as if the countryside is dangerous. And I, like Julia Bradbury [who was also a guest] – we’ve both been president of the Ramblers’ Association and we’re passionate walkers, we know that the countryside is not dangerous.

Janet continued: “But then it says ‘stay safe’ as if the countryside is dangerous. And I, like Julia Bradbury [who was also a guest] – we’ve both been president of the Ramblers’ Association and we’re passionate walkers, we know that the countryside is not dangerous.
“And sure you see on the news about climbers being rescued off mountains, people who wore the wrong shoes or got trapped in bad weather, but quite honestly that can happen to experienced ramblers and hikers just as much as people who don’t know too much about the countryside.”
Dermot turned the question to Julia, asking: “But Julia you think the code is a good idea?”
“I do think it’s a good idea, the code hasn’t been updated for 70 years,” she noted.
“The problem that we have is that the tone of this new code is meant to be more friendly.
“That’s the message that they’ve been trying to get out there. And I do take on board what Janet said about it being patronising to tell people what to do.
“But then you look at what’s happening in our parks and let’s transfer that to three weeks ago in Cumbria where a group of campers decided to enjoy the beautiful natural space of Cumbria and then they walked away from the campsite and they left everything behind.
“Including the tents, including their rubbish. Now I wouldn’t expect to have to tell people that that is a bad thing and not to do that and that you’re damaging the environment and you’ll be killing wildlife who are attracted to the food and going to the cans.

“So is it patronising to say ‘take your tents away with you and clear up your rubbish?’
“It might be patronising but clearly we’ve reached a point at the moment where we need it.”
Janet still disagreed, arguing: “Pushing a pamphlet won’t make any difference because wild camping has been encouraged by the media and it’s been going on for ages.
“I don’t think that producing a pamphlet is the answer, I think the answer is that in our national parks – we have traffic wardens in towns, we need wardens in national parks and beauty spots issuing on-the-spot fines as people return to their cars.
“And the government needs to invest money in protecting our greatest national asset which is the countryside, and not spending £50,000 promoting a pamphlet.
“They should put real money into protecting the countryside in the form of wardens, not just doing fancy signs or telling us to stay safe and saying smile when someone comes in the opposite direction.
“Because not everyone wants to go for a walk and smile and say hello, they might have perfectly good reason for wanting to go for a walk and have a bit of quiet time and introspective time not being greeted by a load of people in bobble hats going ‘hello’.
Alison joked: “But I’m sure you’re always smiling when you go out aren’t you Janet?”
Laughing, Janet agreed the countryside needs to be protected, but said the responsibility is on the government to do more.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.
One week after detailing its plan for the 2020-21 TV season, NBC has shed light on the status of the assorted pilots that were hoping to be in contention for a spot on the schedule.
Debris — in which Jonathan Tucker’s CIA analyst (Kingdom) and Riann Steele’s (NCIS: New Orleans) MI6 agent investigate the wreckage of an alien spacecraft — actually delivered its pilot ahead of the pandemic and thus is actively under consideration.
NBC meanwhile will shoot pilots later this year — once production can safely begin — for Langdon (starring Succession‘s Ashley Zukerman as the hero of the Dan Brown novels), Ordinary Joe (Zoo’s James Wolk lives three Sliding Doors lives), Night School (starring Shameless‘ Shanola Hampton and based on the 2018 movie), Grand Crew (fka untitled Phil Augusta Jackson/Dan Goor comedy about “black people, dating and wine”) and American Auto (which is set at the headquarters of an automotive company in Detroit).
At That Age (an exploration of an African-American family’s legacy), Echo (investigators solve crimes by traveling into the past in the body of the victim), Crazy for You (Teen Wolf‘s Shelley Hennig re-enters the dating scene), Jefferies (Jim Jefferies plays a fictionalized version of himself) and Someone Out There (led by Veronica Mars‘ Ryan Hansen), meanwhile, are being “rolled over” to the next development cycle.
Additional scripts for all of the above pilots were ordered back in March, as well as for La Brea, which stars Michael Raymond-James (Once Upon a Time) and Natalie Zea (The Detour) and revolves around a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles that rips apart a family and leads to a primeval world.
Check out our NBC Pilot Guide for many more details on all the above.

Get to dreamcasting a younger Tom Hanks, because NBC has given a pilot order to Langdon, which is about the earlier adventures of the code-cracking hero from The Da Vinci Code and Dan Brown’s other bestselling Robert Langdon novels.
Based on Brown’s The Lost Symbol — which technically was the third Robert Langdon book — the prequel series will nonetheless follow the early adventures of the famed Harvard symbologist, who must solve a series of deadly puzzles to save his kidnapped mentor and thwart a chilling global conspiracy.
Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie, co-creators of TV’s Scream, will pen and showrun the series, serving as EPs alongside Brown, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Anna Culp, and Samie Falvey.
Brown’s Robert Langdon novels have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, with Hanks playing Langdon in a trio of feature films: 2006’s The Da Vinci Code, 2009’s Angels & Demons and 2016’s Inferno.
NBC’s previous drama pilot orders this season include (but are not limited to!) At That Age, about how an African American family survives a catastrophic event; Debris, in which two agents investigate the wreckage of an alien spacecraft; and Echo, in which investigators solve high-profile crimes by traveling into the past, inhabiting the victim’s body.

According to the latest online chatter, the PSN is down for some PS3 and PS4 users tonight.
Fans are reporting 8002a537 PlayStation Network error codes popping up when trying to sign in.
Others are also confirming being signed out of their current PSN session on PS4 and PS3 consoles.
“I’m trying to play GTA Online, but it won’t let me get into PSN. Says “You have been signed out… Error 8002A537” one user confirms.
While another writes: “PSN just went down. Everything related to PlayStation is out.”
It appears that PS3 owners have been affected by tonight’s outage, with the 8002a537 error code known as an old issue for the console.
Right now, Sony has not changed the server status of the PSN on their official site.
So it’s hard to say what might be causing tonight’s problems and how long they might last.
Hopefully, this will remain a blip, and PSN users will be able to get back to their gaming activities soon enough.
If these sign-in issues do continue, a new Sony PlayStation update should be shared through officials channels very soon.
From the current outage reports coming in, it appears that PlayStation Network users in the United States are the most affected.

Microsoft’s embrace and adoption of open source software has continued with the surprising decision to publish the code for Windows Calculator and release it on GitHub under the permissive MIT license.
The repository shows Calculator’s surprisingly long history. Although it is in some regards one of the most modern Windows applications—it’s an early adopter of Fluent Design and has been used to showcase a number of design elements—core parts of the codebase date all the way back to 1995.
The actual calculations are performed by this ancient code. Calculator’s mathematics library is built using rational numbers (that is, numbers that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers). Where possible, it preserves the exact values of the numbers it is computing, falling back on Taylor series expansion when an approximation to an irrational number is required. Poking around the change history shows that the very earliest iterations of Windows Calculator, starting in 1989, didn’t use the rational arithmetic library, instead using floating point arithmetic and the much greater loss of precision this implies.

Flights always start with passengers being welcomed on board the plane by at least one member of the cabin crew. As any flier knows, these flight attendants greet the traveller, check their boarding pass and possibly indicate where they’ll find their seat. However, when you board the plane, the cabin crew are also on the lookout for something else. The flight attendants are in fact looking at your physical build – and the reason why is alarming.
A former crew remember revealed there’s one code word, in particular, they’ll use when assessing passengers.
Carrie Bradley, who worked as a flight attendant on an international airline for 12 years, told The Sun they keep an eye out for someone who is an “ABP.”
She said: “When passengers are boarding, you’re assessing them and seeing if they are an ABP.”
The acronym stands for “Able-Bodied Passenger.” In short, well-built passengers could be very useful in an emergency.
Crew will identify these fit and healthy people as they walk in the door and then note where they are sitting in the aircraft.
Janice Bridger, who claimed to have been a flight attendant for 27 years, explained the importance of a powerfully-built person boarding the aircraft.
“If I see someone who is muscular, powerful, strong, physically fit, I memorise his/her face and make a mental note of where they are sitting,” said Bridger on US knowledge-sharing site Quora.
Should an emergency occur, crew may well call on these travellers to help them out.
“I consider this person a resource for me. In the event of an attack on the flight or on me, these are my ‘go-to’ people,” Bridger explained.
“If a situation looks like it could develop, I’ll privately and discreetly ask one of these people if they would be willing to help us if necessary.
“Help might involve subduing or restraining an unruly passenger. We hope it never happens, but we will prepare just in case it does.”
Bradley added that she would speak to these fliers during the flight to see if she can glean any pertinent information.
“During the flight, it is easier to continue assessing through chats during the service,” she told The Sun.
“It may come out they are fireman, in the army, an off duty pilot or cabin crew or a doctor, which is all useful information.”
Cabin crew do still manage to make their own fun while working and do sometimes use a certain code word if they spot someone on board they fancy.
Flight attendant Emily Witkop told the New York Post the term “hot coffee” means cabin crew like the look of you.
“I recall for a few years there was a ‘hot coffee’ code among flight attendants,” she said.
“You would say, ‘I’ve got hot coffee in 3B!’ Which meant there was an extremely attractive passenger in that particular seat who the other flight attendants should check out.”
Cruise ships sail far and wide, from European destinations such as France and Germany to more exotic locations like the Caribbean. Cruises these days offer a host of luxuries, including onboard zip lining and water parks. But no matter how big or how opulent a cruise ship is, things can still go wrong. Brandon Presser served as a cruise director for a week, and during his time he picked a number of key codes crew members use onboard in emergencies, such as a fire.
He told Bloomberg in the event of a fire, the codeword they use is ‘Bravo’.
Other codewords used, using the NATO phonetic alphabet, are ‘Alpha’, used in a medical emergency, and ‘Kilo’, which is a request for all personnel to report to their emergency posts.
Presser said this can occur in the event of an evacuation.
He added: “It’s crucial for the staff to have code words so that passengers don’t get freaked out if something goes wrong.
“A ’30-30′ means the crew is asking maintenance to clean up a mess; three times during my stint I called in a ‘PVI’ (public vomiting incident).”
But the codewords to be most wary of are ’Echo’ and ‘Oscar’.
He said: “Be wary of ‘Echo’, which is called if the ship is starting to drift, or ‘Oscar’, which means someone’s gone overboard. A crew member told me he’s had only four or five ‘Oscars’ in 10 years of cruising.”
Another codeword which could be used by crew members on a ship is ‘Sierra’, which means ‘call for a stretcher’.
If someone dies on a cruise ship the announcement ‘Operation Bright Star’ is made, which alerts the crew to the death of a passenger.
Tina Molson, 52, from Cleethorpes, who worked in an onboard duty-free shop from 2002 to 2010, has explained that deaths aren’t that rare.
“Many of the older passengers go on cruise ships for months because it’s cheaper for them than living at home. Some even go to sea to die,” Tina told The Sun.
“There was often a death on board. On one ship we had a shop store room next to the freezer room where the bodies were stored. We called it the ‘coffin locker.’”
But cruises aren’t all doom and gloom – cruise ships were recently put under the spotlight by consumer watchdog Which? and a new firm has scooped the title ‘best cruise line’.
Viking Ocean Cruises UK was given the top spot with the survey of 20 companies.
The result was based on customer feedback, with a total of 25,000 people answering questions about cabin space, onboard facilities, WiFi service and overall value.
Viking received an average customer satisfaction of 88 per cent.
