Though the Toronto International Film Festival is where the major studios and established players from the independent film world launch Oscar campaigns, the festival can still have a few surprises.
This year those include “Icebox,” one of this year’s TIFF world premieres that could find itself in the running for award season consideration with the big boys by year’s end thanks to a ripped-from-the-headlines story and the backing of one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to new Blu-ray releases and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)
Time for another Blu-ray round-up for all you physical media fiends out there. There’s so much good stuff here, folks. Thor: Ragnarok comes home, loaded with hilarious features; the star-studded Murder on the Orient Express also arrives, bringing with it one hell of a mustache; then you have Coco, the latest from Pixar; Gary Oldman‘s Oscar reel, aka Darkest Hour; the absolutely wonderful The Florida Project; the Stephen King werewolf flick Silver Bullet; and the home invasion horror movie The Strangers.
Here are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week, and beyond.
The Thor franchise has always been at the bottom-of-the-barrel for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the last thing we needed was another Thor sequel, Marvel redeemed the series with a lot of help from Taika Waititi. To be clear: Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok still has a lot of problems that plague the Thor films, but Waititi is so damn funny, and able to get such funny performances from his cast, that it almost doesn’t matter.
It certainly helps that Waititi has assembled one hell of a cast around Thor mainstays Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson and, most of all, Jeff Goldblum, shine as the new additions to the series. Blanchett’s baddie Hela is woefully underused, but she makes the most of her time. Thompson’s hard-drinking, ass-kicking Valkyrie is one of the best new characters in the MCU. And Goldblum’s Grandmaster is a wonderful study in lunacy – it’s clear that Waititi trained his cameras on Goldblum and let him do whatever the heck he wanted to do, resulting in comic gold.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor and Loki are out of their element as their long-lost sister Hela returns to Asgard and begins to destroy everything. Thor and Loki end up trapped on the planet Sakaar, where Thor is reunited with the Hulk, AKA Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). After recruiting the reluctant Valkyrie for back-up, Thor and company race back to Asgard to stop Hela once and for all. Along the way, there are lots of jokes.
I’m not sure there’s much room left for future Thor sequels, but if Ragnarok is to be the end of the line, it’s the perfect film to go out on.
Special Features to Note:
I was one of those weirdos who thought Thor: Ragnarok was good, not great. That said, even if you’re so-so on the film, this Blu-ray is a must-own simply because of the wealth of hilarious special features. Taika Waititi is all over the features here, giving interviews and being his usual irreverent self. Even when featurettes slip into standard making-of mode, with cast and crew giving mostly predictable answers to predictable questions, Waititi will pop-up and save the day.
The best feature here is Waititi’s commentary, which is consistently laugh-out-loud funny. When the filmmaker reveals he did the motion capture for the fire-engulfed god that Thor faces at the start of the film, he adds: “That fire is real; I was on fire when I did the motion capture for this scene.” Some other highlights from the commentary:
– “I did the motion capture for [Chris Hemsworth] as well; anytime you see him on screen, it’s me.”
– “That hammer really weighs five million pounds; that’s how strong Chris Hemsworth is.”
– “Cate Blanchett was one of the first people to sign onto the film; I tricked her into it. She took one look at me and said, ‘Yes, I’ll do it, you’re my hero.’”
– During the scene where Hela destroys Thor’s hammer: “This is a very sad scene for people who love tools.”
In between the jokes, Waititi does take time to talk about the making of the film. For instance: he has a lot to say about how the look of the movie was influenced by the art of Marvel artist Jack Kirby.
The second best feature here is “Team Darryl;”, a hilarious short in which Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster moves in with Thor’s old roommate Darryl. I could’ve honestly watched an entire feature-length film based around this premise.
Special Features Include:
Pixar’s latest Coco may not be one of their best films, but it certainly has a lot of charm and heart. 12-year-old Miguel lives in Mexico and dreams of becoming a famous musician, like his hero, the late Ernesto de la Cruz. Unfortunately for Miguel, he lives with a family that has a very strict “no music” policy.
A series of misadventures lands Miguel in the super-colorful, skeleton-filled Land of the Dead during Día de Muertos. Miguel’s only hope is to track down Ernesto de la Cruz. Along the way, Miguel is aided by Héctor, a dead man in danger of being forgotten forever should no one put his picture up on a ofrenda.
To be honest, Coco’s plot doesn’t make much sense, and it requires more than heavy helping of suspension of disbelief. Once you get beyond that, though, you’re treated to a bright, beautiful, often emotional film that also happens to feature a really adorable dog.
Even if you try to resist Coco’s charms, don’t be surprised if you find yourself weeping as the film comes to a close. Damn you, Pixar. You made me cry again.
Special Features to Note:
The bulk of the special features on the Coco Blu-ray are devoted to the exhausting amount of work that went into creating Pixar’s latest. The filmmakers and creators behind the film pop up in several featurettes to discuss how hard they worked to make Coco’s Mexican settings and traditions as authentic as possible. They tell us the film was “meant to be a love-letter to Mexico,” and that certainly comes through in all their work. The creators of the film went to Mexico for multiple research trips, and nearly everything – from the music to the costumes – is rooted in Mexican tradition,
The features I enjoyed the most was “Paths to Pixar”, in which members of the crew – artists, writers, designers, etc. – talk about how they got into filmmaking, and how they came to work for Pixar. This is a rather touching segment, because it has a theme of realizing your dreams, even if they seem impossible.
Beyond the featurettes, there are also deleted scenes that reveal the film was originally conceived as a full-blown musical, with songs in almost every scene. The filmmakers realized that it was very hard to craft a musical around a family who shuns music, so most of the songs ended up being scrapped.

ON NETFLIX:
Lincoln: With Steven Spielberg’s The Post and the Daniel Day-Lewis-starrer Phantom Thread up for a generous helping of Oscars on Sunday, Netflix couldn’t have picked a better time to re-up their 2012 collaboration, which itself picked up prizes for Best Actor and Best Production Design. Working from a hyper-intelligent screenplay by the great Tony Kushner (based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s essential book Team of Rivals), Spielberg wisely eschews the customary – and presumably hard to resist – cradle-to-grave arc typical of so many blander biopics, instead focusing on a single moment in the president’s political life that extends far beyond it. Day-Lewis is, as usual, sublime in the role; a jaw-dropping cast of ace character actors (including Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, John Hawkes, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Jackie Earl Haley, and Gloria Reuben) shines bright.
ON DVD / VOD
Quest: Director/cinematographer Jonathan Olshefski spent eight years, from 2008 to 2015 (the Obama years, in fact; Obama/Biden signs cover the neighborhood early on, and the elections provide useful guideposts to the chronology) with the Raineys, a fairly typical North Philadelphia family that, in that time and before it, face a number of everyday trials and tribulations. There are money troubles and addiction demons, there are tragedies in their pasts and quite nearly one in their present. But they don’t complain and they don’t despair; they carry on, pausing only to be thankful for what they have, and who they are. Epic in scope yet modest in execution, it’s a film with much to say (without ever explicitly sayingit) about class and race in America, and about family, and its small miracles.
ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD
Coco: Pixar’s latest is one of their best, and a welcome reprieve from a run of duds and sequels. Charming and heartfelt, it concerns a young man’s quest to become a musician – a journey that takes him across nothing less than the divide between the living and the dead (don’t worry, it’s on the Day of the Dead, so it’s less scary than it sounds), and to the truth about a family he’s never really known. The animation is inventive, the songs are lively, the protagonist is adorable, and its closing passages vibrate with earned emotion and honest poignancy. It’s a real treat. (Includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, and featurettes.)
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Nothing’s better than the moment where a good movie becomes a great one, and I can tell you when that moment happens in In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh’s latest with pinpoint precision: it’s when we hear a letter Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) has written to his wife, which begins as a motivation explainer, and then swims gracefully into straight-up poetry. That he can accomplish that transition, and then pivot into horrifying violence not long after, speaks volumes about McDonagh’s mastery of tone, and Three Billboards takes turns that most filmmakers wouldn’t even attempt, much less sustain. But watching McDonagh pull this off is, in its own way, thrilling; it’s one of those movies that makes you marvel at everything one film can be. (Includes featurette and McDonagh’s Oscar-winning 2004 short film Six Shooter.)
Darkest Hour: It’s easy to slag Joe Wright’s Oscar-friendly period drama, which takes a Lincoln-style snapshot of Winston Churchill is his first month or so as Prime Minister of Great Britain – and, to be fair, it seems to exist primarily as a showcase for the gifts of Gary Oldman, who is somewhere under the layers of make-up required to give him the appearance of the legendary leader. But it is one hell of a performance, mannered and studied though it may be, while Wright’s direction is fleet-footed and the supporting characters are given more dimension than you might expect. Is it a great movie? Not quite. But it’s a decent one, and Oldman’s going to win his Best Actor Oscar, so you may as well give it a peek. (Incudes audio commentary and featurettes.)

ON BLU-RAY / FILMSTRUCK
Tom Jones: This rowdy and ribald period comedy from director Tony Richardson, a new addition to the Criterion Collection, is mostly remembered for two things: its funny/sexy dinner scene between Albert Finney and Joyce Redman, and for being one of the “weaker” winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture. It’s not hard to see why; from its silent movie-style opening to its flashes of Benny Hill-style bedroom farce, it’s not the kind of Serious Picture that usually takes that honor, and if the movie is high-spirited, it’s also a tad uneven. But its competition that year included Cleopatra and How the West Was Won, so we’re not exactly talking grave injustices here – it’s an enjoyable bit of fluff, nothing more, nothing less. (Also streaming on FilmStruck.) (Includes theatrical version and director’s cut, featurette, new and archival interviews, and Finney on The Dick Cavett Show.)
ON BLU-RAY
Lady and the Tramp: Disney’s darling 1955 animated adventure has been out of reach for Blu-ray buyers for a while now (thanks, Disney Vault!), but it’s back in circulation as part of the “Disney Signature Collection,” and it’s as enjoyable as ever. The spaghetti-eating scene is the go-to image from this one, of course (and it’s properly placed on the cover), but there’s a lot more going on here: a story of romance from opposite sides of the tracks, tinged with the melancholy of rejection in the home and even a dash of heroism. The Blu-ray restoration (though the same as the “Diamond Edition” six years back) is lovely – the colors pop and the songs hum – and this remains one of Disney’s sweetest animal adventures. (Includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, sing-a-long version, and featurettes.)
The Outlaw: This 1943 Western from producer/director Howard Hughes (and an uncredited Howard Hawks) was notoriously promoted with the ample cleavage of star Jane Russell, so ‘40s horndogs must’ve been more than a little disappointed by the film itself, in which Russell is mere window dressing for yet another telling of the Billy the Kid/Pat Garrett story (and doesn’t even show up until a good two reels in). But she does generate real heat with Jack Beutel’s Billy, particularly in a wild kissing POV and a sequence wherein (if I was following, and I think I was) she basically screws the dying cowboy back to life (off-screen, of course). The rest of the movie hits and misses; the score is horrifying and the pace drags, but Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy from It’s A Wonderful Life) and Walter Huston make a memorable Pat Garrett / Doc Holliday combo, and the film’s homosexual subtext is unexpectedly juicy. More a curiosity than anything, but KL Studo Classic’s Blu-ray transfer is a much-needed upgrade from years of poor public domain releases. (Includes audio commentary and trailers.)
Harper / The Drowning Pool: Paul Newman took on the role of Ross Macdonald’s private eye Lew Archer (here renamed Lew Harper) in two films, separated by nine years; Warner Archive is now releasing both of them on Blu-ray, and they’re a lot of fun. In the first, 1966’s Harper, Newman’s Bogart-esque P.I. dives deep into the hippy-dippy world of mid-60s Los Angeles, and mines the fish-out-of-water scenario for some good lines and laughs; it’s a hyper-cool performance, and director Jack Smight’s lets Newman’s laid-back style steer the picture, for the better. The 1975 follow-up The Drowning Pool puts him into another new environment, the swamps of the Louisiana bayou, and matches the actor up with his real-life love Joanne Woodward, which lends their characters’ flirtation some unexpected gravitas. Melanie Griffith also turns up in a sex-kitten role similar to her turn in another private dick movie that year, Night Moves, a mirroring that underscores the conventionality of these movies, and the latter in particular, in an era that gave us the subversions of The Long Goodbye, Chinatown, and The Late Show. But as conventional gumshoe movies go, you could do a lot worse. (Harper includes audio commentary and trailer; The Drowning Pool includes vintage featurette and trailer.)

Wright and brother Mikey were on track to became the first brother and sister in history to win matching titles at Surfest at Newcastle before Ho decided to spoil the party.
IRON COMEBACK: From surgery to surf
MOTIVATION:What has Steph Gilmore fired up?
While Mikey did his bit by defeating Hawaiian Baron Manila 18.30 to 16.17 in the men’s decider, his sister fell just short in a closely fought women’s finale.
Ho, who competes on the world tour alongside the Australian, just edged Wright 11.50 to 11.34 to win the women’s crown.
She is the first woman to take a heat off Wright since the Australian won her second world title in Maui in December.
READY TO ROCK: Tyler Wright back in the water
NETBALLFUN AND GAMES: Guide: Who’s playing Australia
“She almost got it on that last wave. It was close,” said Mikey, who now heads south to compete at the Sydney Pro at Manly from Monday.
“It would have been pretty nice to do.”
Despite the loss, Wright said she was happy with her only competition outing before the 2018 world tour opener on the Gold Coast in March.
“It’s been a pretty successful competition,” Wright said.
The story is based entirely around the Dia De Los Muertos festival – the day when Mexican families display their ancestors’ photographs with food offerings on an altar.
The pioneering hero is Miguel Riviera (Anthony Gonzalez) a 12-year-old Mexican boy with musical ambitions.
Sadly, music is forbidden in Casa Riviera.
Since Miguel’s great-great-grandmother was abandoned by her musician husband, the family has diverted its energy into their shoe-making business.
It’s cobblers, obviously, so when Miguel’s granny smashes his guitar the defiant youngster heads to the Land Of The Dead to have it out with his ancestors.
This sounds like a grim proposition for a children’s film but even the most sensitive of little souls should be delighted by this brightly-lit underworld.
It’s populated by skeletons but they are far from scary.
Their bones swing around comically while neon spirit animals and cute side characters keep the tone bright and breezy.
There are songs too (one of them is very catchy), some well-staged action scenes and a big emotional finale.
The twist may be easy to guess but it doesn’t stop it packing a punch.
Coco is not quite Pixar at its best but the ending cut me to the bone.
Coco – (PG, 105 mins) Directors: Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina; Stars: Anthony Gonzalez (voice), Gael García Bernal (voice), Benjamin Bratt (voice)
Released this weekend, the latest film from Pixar, finds a young boy in the Land of the Dead on a mission to find the truth behind his family’s history.
But parents shouldn’t worry, not only has Coco had incredible reviews, but despite claims of tears from audiences, director Lee Unkrich is adamant it’s suitable for kids.
Having helmed Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2 and 3, the filmmaker is one of Pixar’s best.
Now in an interview with the Independent, he admits Coco has some emotional moments, just like his past creations.
Unkrich said: “I’ve heard a lot of surprising stories of kids crying in Coco.
“At the end of the day, we don’t make movies for kids, we make them for everybody – for adults and ourselves. We just make sure they’re appropriate for kids.
“The first time I put music up against the end of Toy Story 3 – when Andy is giving his toys to Bonnie – it brought tears to my eyes.
“[The same thing happened when] I put together the scene at the end of Coco in storyboard form – it definitely felt emotional to me even though we weren’t using our real actors yet.
“I have to hold on to that because it’s then going to be years before we actually animated the scene, so I have to remember how it was emotionally affecting and not fall into the trap of wanting to change it.”
The new Pixar movie has so far won 32 awards and is expected to pick up the Best Animated Feature gong at the Oscars.
Coco is out now.

In July, US Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer held a press conference to denounce a chocolate-flavored energy powder meant for snorting, called Coco Loko. He dubbed it “cocaine on training wheels” and called on the Food and Drug Administration to investigate.
The agency did, it turns out. And though regulators didn’t come up with a description quite as catchy as Schumer’s, their assessment of Coco Loko was even more damning.
Regulators determined that the powder was an unapproved new drug and that its maker, Legal Lean, was unlawfully marketing it, according to a Tuesday announcement. Moreover, the agency also looked into another product by the company, Legal Lean Syrup. The agency found that it, too, was an unapproved drug. The syrup contained an undisclosed sedative, doxylamine, which is found in the over-the-counter sleep-aid Unisom.
