Petrol bombs have been hurled at police in Northern Ireland ahead of an unauthorised nationalist parade commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising.

Seven petrol bombs were thrown at police vehicles on Monday by youths in the Creggan area of Derry ahead of a dissident republican march from the Creggan estate to the Derry city cemetery.

Footage and images posted by journalists based in Northern Ireland show disorderly scenes. In one clip, a youth throws a petrol bomb at a police van, causing the vehicle to go up in flames.

As the driver leaves the scene, more masked youths surround the van, hurling Molotov cocktails at the police vehicle.

Stones, bottles and planks of wood were also thrown at police during the attack. Although there was damage caused to vehicles, there were no injuries reported, according to The Journal.

Republicans mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising every year. Police said attempts were made to facilitate the 1916 commemoration “within the law,” but these calls were ignored.

In a statement issued by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), authorities said they will review all video footage collected and will “robustly pursue all possible enquiries to identify those involved and bring them before the courts.”

Chief Inspector Ivor Morton said that police attempted to engage with the organisers of the parade prior to the event but they declined to take part in discussions. Morton also said statements from the organisers, claiming they were informed by police if the parade would be stopped, were “patently untrue and can only be viewed as an attempt by those behind the parade as a bid to raise tensions in the area.”

“It is therefore regrettable that in raising those tensions a small number of people saw fit to attack police officers with petrol bombs in what was clearly a premeditated attack.”

The violence has been condemned by members of both the Democratic Unionist Party and nationalist party Sinn Féin. Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill condemned the violence as “very disturbing.”

Gary Middleton, a Democratic Unionist Party politician in Northern Ireland, called for an investigation into the violence. “This was an unregistered parade and today the scenes coming from the Creggan area have been totally disgraceful. People in paramilitary style uniform is wrong and the continued glorification of terrorism is abhorrent,” he said.

A number of arrests were also made after an unauthorised parade, led by men dressed in paramilitary-style uniforms, took place in Lurgan, Armagh, on Saturday.

WHEN I decided to cut down on booze four years ago there was no epiphany. I didn’t wake up to find a mystery man in my bedroom or parts of my anatomy printed by the work photocopier.

From floral touches to smoke and fog, there seems to always be a new trend in the world of booze — but some cocktails simply stand the test of time.

Drinks International has released its list of the best-selling cocktails around the world in 2018, and it proves that most of today’s popular drinks are new takes on the classics.

The website compiled the list by asking 106 of the best bars in the world — using the results of the World’s 50 Best Bars list — to rank their 10 best-selling cocktails.

From Sidecars to Sazeracs, scroll down to see the 30 best-selling cocktails in the world, ranked in ascending order.

30. Gimlet. Down 14 places since last year, this drink is essentially gin and juice — a 75/25 gin-to-lime-cordial ratio is what’s most common.

29. Champagne Cocktail. There are variations of this drink, but they all aim to make fizz even more fancy. To make it, cover a sugar cube with bitters then pour Champagne over that.

28. French 75. Up two places since last year, this cocktail — made popular in Paris in the 20s — is made with London dry gin, lemon juice, sugar, and Champagne.

In August of 2016, doctors in Washoe County, Nevada, found that one of their patients couldn’t shake a bad bacterial infection. The infection had likely taken hold years before while the local woman was on an extended visit to India. There, she had undergone multiple hospitalizations and surgery for a leg injury and developed a bone infection. By the time she got back to Nevada, the infection had spread.

The US doctors isolated her in a hospital room and threw all the antibiotics they could at the infection. It resisted all of them—26 in total, tests confirmed. In early September, the woman developed septic shock and died.

Though rare, the case highlights two important points: that drug-resistant bacteria don’t stop at borders and that India is of particular concern in the fight against antibiotic-resistant infections. While cases of drug-resistant bacterial infections are rising globally, recent data shows that India has among the highest rates of such infections in the world. The country is also the largest consumer of antibiotics per capita.

Masked attackers firebomb Swedish synagogue with Molotov cocktails https://briefnews.eu/masked-attackers-firebomb-swedish-synagogue-with-molotov-cocktails/ https://briefnews.eu/masked-attackers-firebomb-swedish-synagogue-with-molotov-cocktails/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 02:58:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/masked-attackers-firebomb-swedish-synagogue-with-molotov-cocktails/

A group of masked youths have attacked a synagogue in Gothenburg, Sweden, with Molotov cocktails, amid a global backlash against the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. No one was hurt in the incident, local media report.

“A burning object has been thrown” just outside the synagogue building, Lars Tunefjord, commanding officer at the police regional management center told Sveriges Radio. The officer added that police are currently at the scene conducting a “technical investigation and searching for the perpetrators.”

According to witness accounts, a fire started in the yard of the synagogue shortly after 10:00pm local time, after pro-Palestinian protesters, demonstrating against President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, pelted the building with burning projectiles. One of the firebombs landed just outside the synagogue compound where local Jewish students were holding an event.

The President of the Jewish Assembly in Sweden, Allan Stutzinsky, who was at the site of the attack, claimed about a dozen of pro-Palestinian protesters were involved in the attack.

“About ten youngsters outside the gates of the synagogue ignited objects, burning objects that were later thrown over the gates into the synagogue,” Stutzinsky told Sveriges Radio.

Other local media reported that up to 20 masked youths took part in the attack.

“It happened at 10:18pm Sweden time. There was a youth party inside at the time,” Dvir Maoz, a representative of the World Bnei Akiva movement in Gothenburg, was quoted as saying by Israel National News. “I saw fire, so I told the security guards that a firebomb had been thrown at the building. They called the police. The youths were scared. This was the first time they had experienced any form of terrorism so close to them.”

“We arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. There was a fire of lesser extent between the cars in the parking lot. There was some kind of flammable liquid,” emergency services leader, Kristoffer Wahter, was quoted as saying by the local media.

Police quickly blocked the site and closed traffic in the neighborhood around the synagogue. Officers then began searching for the attackers with sniffer dogs. “We do not know much more than there are several Molotov cocktails that have been thrown at the synagogue,” police said at the scene.

Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated in the Swedish city of Malmo, shouting anti-Jewish and anti-American slogans. “Just last night, protesters shouted ‘we’re going to shoot the Jews’ in Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city… I cannot imagine what it feels like to be a Swedish Jew today,” tweeted Jewish Agency for Israel spokesperson Avi Mayer.

Arabs and Muslims across the world are rallying angrily against Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, announced by the US president Wednesday. Austria and France also witnessed rallies Saturday. The Occupied Palestinian Territories are engulfed in violence with ongoing clashes between protesters and Israeli security forces, which have been firing live ammunition to suppress the demonstrations. On Saturday alone, over 230 Palestinians were injured, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said, with 171 wounded on the West Bank and Jerusalem, and another 60 in the Gaza Strip.

16 cocktails you’ve probably never heard of but are perfect for this holiday season https://briefnews.eu/16-cocktails-youve-probably-never-heard-of-but-are-perfect-for-this-holiday-season/ https://briefnews.eu/16-cocktails-youve-probably-never-heard-of-but-are-perfect-for-this-holiday-season/#respond Sun, 26 Nov 2017 07:49:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/16-cocktails-youve-probably-never-heard-of-but-are-perfect-for-this-holiday-season/ best cocktails

  • There are tons of amazing and unusual cocktails that most people don’t know.
  • Instead of once again going for the eggnog this holiday season, try one of the fun, relatively unknown mixed drinks we selected.

It’s the holiday season. You’re at a party. And you go for the eggnog. Again.

A classic is always a solid choice, but variety is the spice of life. Sometimes, it’s fun to go for a bolder, lesser-known drink, if for no other reason than to impress your dates or friends with your cocktail know-how.

Business Insider put together a list of outstanding but relatively unknown mixed drinks that you should try this holiday season.

We pulled most of the recipes from Liquor.com and Serious Eats. The cocktails using Cointreau were created by the Cointreau team.

Apple Rickey

Cointreau

To make this cocktail, muddle the apple and rosemary in a Highball glass. Then add the Cointreau and lime juice with ice, and top it off with club soda. Stir briefly and add the rosemary sprig and apple slices as garnishes.

Ingredients:

– 2 oz. Cointreau
– 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
– 3 slices of a tart apple
– 7 leaves of fresh rosemary
– 4 oz. club soda or seltzer

Vieux Carré

Flickr/Chodhound

The Vieux Carré comes from 1930s New Orleans. There’s a lot going on, but it’s an incredible cocktail when mixed by a pro.

To make the drink, put all the ingredients into a rocks glass, add ice, and stir.

Ingredients:

– 3/4 oz. whiskey
– 3/4 oz. cognac
– 3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
– 1 tsp Bénédictine
– 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
– 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Hanky Panky

Flickr/sackton

The Hanky Panky originated at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London. The vermouth and gin play off the Fernet Branca’s blend of botanicals.

To make the drink, put all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice. Stir, and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Finally, add the garnish.

Ingredients:

– 1 1/2 oz. gin
– 1 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
– 2 dashes Fernet-Branca
– 1 orange twist garnish

Molotov cocktails & iron bars: G20 protests rage on in Hamburg, 200+ police injured (PHOTOS, VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/molotov-cocktails-iron-bars-g20-protests-rage-on-in-hamburg-200-police-injured-photos-video/ https://briefnews.eu/molotov-cocktails-iron-bars-g20-protests-rage-on-in-hamburg-200-police-injured-photos-video/#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2017 10:40:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/molotov-cocktails-iron-bars-g20-protests-rage-on-in-hamburg-200-police-injured-photos-video/

Violent protests against the G20 summit in Hamburg continued for the second night with rioters attacking police, erecting barricades and trashing shops and vehicles. At least 143 people have been detained and over 200 police officers injured so far.

“We have never experienced this level of hate and violence,” Hamburg police spokesman Timo Zill told the Bild tabloid.

Demonstrators were armed with Molotov cocktails and iron bars, police said in a press statement.

“At the interception Schanzenviertel district [in central Hamburg], the forces were permanently subjected to violent attacks,” the statement added.

The protesters damaged shops and vehicles, police said, adding that some 500 people looted a supermarket on Friday night during ongoing protests.

About 250 protesters erected barricades in the Schlump / Schäferkampsallee area in the center of the city, using trash cans, bicycles and road signs. Several vehicles were set on fire.

One of protesters, however, told DW that police are fueling the anger at the rallies.

“The police are provoking people by running into the protests, crowding people together so that they start to panic. They know people will get injured,” he said.

A Ruptly video shows the scale of damage in the Neuer Pferdemarkt district of Hamburg following the night of clashes, including badly damaged stores and burnt-out barricades in the G20 host city.

At least 213 police officers have been injured in the protests, police said on Saturday morning, as cited by German media.

“I am shaken over the violence that many had to endure, with their vehicles or property destroyed, or witnessing this brutality against police officers,” Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz said.

German Justice Minister Heiko Maas slammed the protests on Twitter.

“Criminals belong before courts, not on the street,” he tweeted.

In the meantime, German police are bracing for a huge new wave of protests planned on Saturday.

A demonstration under the slogan “G20 – not welcome!” saw 12,000 people gather in the Deichtorplatz area of the city center on Saturday morning, police tweeted. A separate demonstration, “Hamburg shows attitude!”, drew some 1,000 participants, police said, adding that both marches have been peaceful so far.

Elsewhere, Greenpeace activists scaled the iconic 50-meter-high Köhlbrand bridge and held a banner reading, “G-20: End Coal”.

The anti-globalist demonstrations in Hamburg were organized under the slogan “Welcome to Hell.” The protests turned violent on Thursday night, erupting in confrontations with police. Clashes began in the evening, with police using pepper-spray and water cannons against the rioters.

Speaking to the German broadcaster NDR, a spokesman for the “Welcome to Hell” demo, Andreas Blechschmidt, distanced himself from “senseless violence” and heavy rioting.

On Friday evening, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that such violent clashes are unacceptable.

“I have every understanding for peaceful demonstrations, but violent demonstrations endanger human lives, they endanger people themselves, they put police officers and security forces in danger, put residents in danger, and so that is unacceptable,” she said.

How the 'Liquid Chef' Mixes LA's Best Cocktails https://briefnews.eu/how-the-liquid-chef-mixes-las-best-cocktails/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-liquid-chef-mixes-las-best-cocktails/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2017 15:18:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-liquid-chef-mixes-las-best-cocktails/ In this occasional series, OZY takes to streets and neighborhoods across the globe to ask a simple question: “How was your day?”

Matt Seigel
Los Angeles

I like to be one of the first people in the building when I’m running a bar. Part of that is my work ethic and part is I just like the time to be alone with my own thoughts. Even if all I’m doing is restocking bottles and glassware, it’s about getting the place spotless and perfect by the time the first guests arrive.

I think I’m one of only three people in the world to work at both Eleven Madison Park and NoMad. Eleven Madison Park won the award for best restaurant in the world in a 2017 poll and that doesn’t come without a cost. One of the three best bars in the world? It’s incredibly intense and was the professional equivalent of getting my teeth kicked in, nightly. But I wanted to study with the best in the world, so you go to where they are. I’m 36 now; four years in, I’m still pretty new to the game.

One of the reasons I sort of don’t like the title “mixologist” or even “beverage consultant” is that it’s nowhere near descriptive enough to describe what we’re doing, which is really a lot closer to being like a Liquid Chef than anything else. But I didn’t like being called a disc jockey either when I was DJ’ing — I mean, I wasn’t jockeying discs, so it seemed kind of small and almost thoughtless.

It’s incredibly intense and was the professional equivalent of getting my teeth kicked in, nightly.

Dining and drinking at places that put a premium on the experience, though, means in real, practical terms you know more about the guests than you would in other places. Part of doing this well starts with keeping a notebook, since you might be seeing guests two or three times a year, and you have to remember what they want and how to make it. You can figure out how to make a lot of drinks by looking things up on the internet, but this might just mean you weren’t prepared, and you don’t work in places like Eleven or NoMad if you’re not prepared.

Look, I’ve always been a cocktail nerd. Loved the culture, spirits, where they come from, all of that. Doing music like I used to was sort of perfect for that, and DJ’ing is a lot like bartending. The not-so-nice parts of the job are pretty much the same: people asking you to play songs they hum for you at the DJ table, people trying to get you to create a drink they sort of remember from the last time they went drinking with a friend.

The difference is, as a DJ, I shake my head and wave them away from the booth. At the bar? No. But, yeah, the bad parts can be the same. People who have had too much. So, an occupational hazard.

I just got back from vacation in Mexico. When I’m in bars, even a cantina in San Miguel, I try to unplug. I like to drink wine, or rum on the rocks. Nothing fancy. I started thinking, though, that I wanted to make a drink for you all. So I picked something for each letter in OZY. It’s totally new.

For the letter O, I picked oloroso. It’s a sherry, fortified and sort of hot. For Z, I used Zucca, an Italian bitters made from rhubarb, which gives it its bitter notes. And for Y, I picked yellow Chartreuse, a French liqueur first made in 1737, by Carthusian monks. The color chartreuse was named after the spirit. When I have some time, I’ll make one for you. It’s sort of like a Manhattan.

Right now, though? After starting the cocktail program for Delilah in Los Angeles and doing the bar menu for Melody, where I’m a partner — it’s a restaurant and wine bar concept opening in July — I’m doing the drink menu for Poppy, in Hollywood. So I’m a little busy.

Want to see Matt in action and try the OZY cocktail? He’ll be at OZY Fest 2017 in New York City’s Central Park on July 22. Get tickets.

Tear gas, Molotov cocktails break out at May Day demonstrations in Paris ahead of election https://briefnews.eu/tear-gas-molotov-cocktails-break-out-at-may-day-demonstrations-in-paris-ahead-of-election/ https://briefnews.eu/tear-gas-molotov-cocktails-break-out-at-may-day-demonstrations-in-paris-ahead-of-election/#respond Mon, 01 May 2017 15:23:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tear-gas-molotov-cocktails-break-out-at-may-day-demonstrations-in-paris-ahead-of-election/ tear gas may dayREUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes

One French police officer was seriously burnt and two others injured in clashes at a May Day demonstration in Paris on Monday in which protesters threw Molotov cocktails and other missiles, the police said.

Television pictures showed policemen trying to shake flames from their riot gear, and of tear gas enveloping the streets around Paris’ Bastille monument.

This year’s May Day came less than a week ahead of the final round of a presidential election where voters must choose between the far-right National Front’s Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Some trade unionists and left-wing activists sought to make the day one of national solidarity against the National Front, mirroring protests in 2002 when Le Pen’s father, party founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, was a candidate.

Marine Le Pen tweeted her support for the injured policemen and said the incident was the type of unacceptable behavior that she no longer wanted to see on French streets.
