Emily Bishop (played by Eileen Derbyshire) was last seen on the cobbles of Coronation Street in January 2016, leaving Weatherfield to join her nephew Spider Nugent (Martin Hancock) in Peru.

The ITV soap stalwart has been back in Britain for some time however, returning to the UK last year to look after niece, Freda Burgess (Ali Briggs) in Scotland.

Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) went to visit Emily in Scotland after she arrived back and has since got engaged to Freda, with the pair announcing the news when they made their own return to the cobbles easier this year.

After Norris left once again after a brief stint back in Weatherfield, Emily will be making her own appearance on the cobbles later this year.

Emily won’t be returning in the traditional format however, as her cameo stint will be via a video link to celebrate a landmark occasion.

In October, Ken Barlow (William Roache) will be celebrating his eightieth birthday, with his loved ones marking the occasion in spectacular fashion.

One such surprise for Ken will be to see Emily sending him a birthday message, as the official Twitter account for the ITV soap showed a picture of the soap stalwart’s face on an iPad.

Although Emily’s appearance will be fleeting, executive producer told press, including Express.co.uk, the door has been left open for a permanent comeback for the beloved character.

“We’re in talks fairly regularly with Eileen,” Iain explained.

“At the moment there’s no plans for her to return, but… the door’s certainly not closed there,” the executive producer said, but could Emily make another return for the soap’s sixtieth anniversary?

Last month, David Platt star Jack P Shepherd, 31, teased what could be in store for fans as the soap gears towards its sixtieth year on the tele in December.

Fans will remember for the show’s fiftieth anniversary back in 2009, a tram plugged into the street, killing off Mollie Dobbs (Vicky Binns).

The fan favourites death happened during a live episode of the soap and Jack has hinted another could be in the pipeline.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Jack said: “A live, we’re doing a live!”

However, fans shouldn’t jump to any conclusions, as the actor added: “No, I just made that up! I assume it will be that! I love ’em.”

The last live episode was broadcast in September 2015 when Kylie Platt (Paula Lane) killed villain Callum Logan (Sean Ward).

Will fans be seeing more live episodes in the future and if so, will there be both deaths and returns the show’s most loved characters?

Elsewhere on the cobbles, Gary Windass’ (Mikey North) latest scheme has been revealed, after killing both Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia) and Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) earlier this year.

With the Underworld factory in dire straights following the roof collapse in March, Gary became the investor willing to help with the rebuild, but had one of his associates in the loan shark business pose as his front man.

Will Gary’s next move in his villainous plan for Weatherfield be exposed?

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.

Coronation Street spoilers: Could THIS villain make a shock return to the cobbles? https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-could-this-villain-make-a-shock-return-to-the-cobbles/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-could-this-villain-make-a-shock-return-to-the-cobbles/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 20:13:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-could-this-villain-make-a-shock-return-to-the-cobbles/

The news comes as Coronation Street boss Kate Oates teased the return of an old face to the ITV soap last month.

It was thought the mysterious character could be none other than jailbird Jim McDonald (played by Charles Lawson), and the actor who plays him has finally spoken out.

A fan asked the actor on Twitter: “@charlie_lawson1 is big jim coming back?!?!?! #corrie.”

To which Charles responded: “No idea!!!!!”

However, as nothing has been confirmed yet, Jim’s return can’t be ruled out.

Kate told The Daily Star Sunday: “We are having a discussion about bringing someone back. It’s a very well-established character…a long-standing name.

“It wouldn’t be for a long period. It would be a short stint.

“I can’t say more than that at this stage. But fans should watch this space.”

It seems as though plenty of viewers would love to see the hard man return, with some even suggesting he could deal with Phelan (Connor McIntyre).

One wrote: “I would love @charlie_lawson1 to return to @itvcorrie again for another stint, 2018 is the year Jim is suppose to be getting released from prison. @Beverleycallard @simongregson123 #Corrie.”

“Think corrie needs Jim McDonald back to sort out Pat Phelan. What about u Pat, ha ha?” another suggested.

A third added.“I think liz will contact Jim McDonald he will come back with a few heavies to deal with #phelan #Corrie #CoronationStreet @itvcorrie.”

However, his ex-wife Liz McDonald (Beverly Callard) and son Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) probably aren’t as keen.

Although, it would be a timely arrival as Jim is set to be released from prison later this year.

He’s currently serving time for armed robbery, but he could be heading back to his old haunt.

The conman was last featured back in 2014 where he was seen on the inside, running an illegal booze scheme where he had earned himself the nickname “The Landlord”.

He ended up blackmailing Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) by handing out booze to the alcoholic.

His behaviour and the fallout from Steve and Liz finding out what he’d been up to lead to him getting an extended sentence.

But could he back to make amends?

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.

Coronation Street spoilers: Cobbles to be hit by two MAJOR exits and surprise pregnancy? https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-cobbles-to-be-hit-by-two-major-exits-and-surprise-pregnancy/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-cobbles-to-be-hit-by-two-major-exits-and-surprise-pregnancy/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 11:37:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-cobbles-to-be-hit-by-two-major-exits-and-surprise-pregnancy/

Following on from Bethany Platt’s (played by Lucy Fallon) horrific grooming ordeal, Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) losing their baby son, Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) fall and Carla Connor’s (Alison King) shock return, the new year looks to be full of even more twists and turns.

Here are our predictions for 2018…

Pat Phelan to finally be exposed

Pat Phelan (Conor McIntyre) should tread carefully in 2018 as many residents of Coronation Street grow closer to learning the truth about his villainous ways including wife Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and daughter Nicola Rubenstein (Nicola Thorp).

Having got away with holding Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth) hostage for best part of the year before killing him and then framing Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) for Seb Franklin’s (Harry Visinoni) fall, it surely won’t be long before he is caught out.

Speaking of his eventual comeuppance, soap star Nicola previously teased: “The net’s closing in.”

David Platt to be victim of horrific sexual assault

As if the Platt family haven’t had enough to deal with over the past year, David (Jack P Shepherd) is set to be sexually assaulted as the soap tackles a male rape storyline.

It is believed he will be drugged and assaulted by personal trainer and mechanic Josh, who will arrive on the cobbles very soon, and be left feeling ashamed and guilty over the attack.

Roy Cropper to die in kidney transplant with Carla Connor

Fans were shocked when it was revealed that Carla has kidney failure after acting strangely when she returned to Weatherfield at Christmas.

Her close friend Roy (David Neilson) was later seen researching how a kidney transplant works suggesting he could be about to donate one of his own.

But nothing ever goes to plan in soap world, so could viewers see the cafe owner left fighting for his life if the operation goes wrong.

Aidan Connor and Eva Price to be killed off in dramatic storyline

Aidan Connor and Eva Price are set for a dramatic departure from the show later this year after it was revealed that soap star’s Shayne Ward and Catherine Tyldesley will be bowing out.

While details of their exit are being kept tightly under wraps following on from their explosive wedding earlier this year, it wouldn’t be surprising if their departure was just as shocking – could the pair be killed off?

Tracy Barlow for unexpected pregnancy after Steve fling

They already have daughter Amy (Elle Mulvaney) together but could Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) and Steve McDonald have another child this year in a surprise pregnancy twist?

The pair have been busy enjoying a steamy fling over Christmas but could they be in for a shock with Tracy learning that she is expecting her second child?

While an unexpected pregnancy is unlikely, there’s no doubt there will be consequences for their recent behaviour.

airs tonight on at 7.30pm

LEGEND OF THE COBBLES: the legacy of Coronation Street's Liz Dawn https://briefnews.eu/legend-of-the-cobbles-the-legacy-of-coronation-streets-liz-dawn/ https://briefnews.eu/legend-of-the-cobbles-the-legacy-of-coronation-streets-liz-dawn/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 07:51:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legend-of-the-cobbles-the-legacy-of-coronation-streets-liz-dawn/

For 34 years she was a staple of British life. Loud, forthright, argumentative…but also warm, loving, maternal.

As Coronation Street’s Vera Duckworth, actress Liz Dawn created one of the nation’s best-loved characters, and her turbulent relationship with husband Jack provided some of TV’s most dramatic moments.

On Monday she died, aged 77. Corrie’s executive producer Kieran Roberts said: “Liz Dawn was a true Coronation Street legend, a brilliant actor and a wonderful person. Everyone lucky enough to have worked with Liz will remember her with huge affection.”

Born Sylvia Butterfield in Leeds, she did not initially pursue a career in acting. After leaving school she drifted around a series of jobs, including selling lightbulbs in Woolworths and working in a factory and as a cinema usherette.

Aged just 18 she had married Walter Bradley. Although that union was to produce a son, Graham, she and Bradley split two years later.

In 1965, however, she married again, to electrician Donald Ibbertson. They were to remain together until her death and had three daughters.

Donald also provided the impetus for the moment that would change her life for ever.

As Bill Tarmey, who played onscreen husband Jack in Coronation Street for three decades, later remembered in his autobiography: “She had just had her second child, Dawn Elizabeth Ibbertson, when Don put her name forward as a singer in a talent competition. Don decided that Sylvia Ibbertson was too much of a mouthful so he reversed their baby daughter’s names and called her Elizabeth Dawn. This was later shortened to Liz Dawn.”

Liz won the competition and began singing in clubs around West Yorkshire, as well as auditioning for roles in TV and adverts, landing minor parts in shows including Open All Hours, Z Cars and All Creatures Great And Small.

Liz Dawn began her working life selling lightbulbs in Woolworths before pursuing acting

Her performance in a Cadbury’s ad, in which she played a mum trying to console her son after a disappointing football match (“Come on Tim,” she says, “I’m sure all goalies let in 10 goals at some time in their career”) caught the attention of Chariots Of Fire writer Colin Well and and he cast her in his 1974 BBC play Leeds United.

That led to the role of factory worker Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street. She soon impressed and five years later producers took the decision to expand Vera’s character by bringing in husband Jack.

“By the time I was introduced to the show, Liz was a familiar face,” recalled Tarmey.

“She told me later that she was a bundle of nerves when she started out in Corrie, mingling with the stars she’d watched on TV.

“She had endless patience. When I screwed up she never got angry. She used to laugh and say, ‘We don’t want any acting in this next scene.’”

It was this natural chemistry that made Vera and Jack so popular. Their relationship – forever arguing but nevertheless loving each other – struck a chord among viewers.

In particular Liz’s portrayal of Vera managed to convey the vulnerability at the heart of the brassy northern battleaxe and despite showdowns with just about every other resident of the Street over her 34 years in the show, she remained one of the soap’s most popular characters.

She and Tarmey continued to be friends until his death in 2012. When she left, she said the hardest thing was not getting to work with her best friend every day. They were also a natural comedy double-act.

Moments such as the time Vera discovers Jack had joined a dating agency under the name “Vincent St Claire”, the episode in which he stages a rooftop protest and she shows her support by going to bingo “and maybe a few drinks after” or the memorable scene in which she tries to entice him into the bedroom (“Well, you go home and get yourself ready,” he sighs. “And I’ll follow you after I’ve supped this pint”) remain laugh-out-loud funny today.

Even their bust-ups had moments of hilarity. In the 2004 Christmas Day episode a flaming row over him giving her the same card as the previous year sees Jack thrown out into the street.

“And don’t think you’re getting any Christmas dinner this year,” she snarls, “cos I’ll feed it to the dog.” “Well, you’ll have the RSPCA on you!” he shouts, before running to the sanctuary of the Rovers.

In 2004, however, Liz was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – the legacy of an adulthood of heavy smoking, but also from her early career singing in the smoky pubs of Leeds.

As her health deteriorated she made the decision to leave the soap and in 2008 12 million of us tuned in to watch Vera slip peacefully away in her armchair.

That year she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards.

It was not quite her last appearance, however. Two years later, she returned as a ghost for the episode in which Jack also died, sitting in the same armchair, dreaming of his wife.

Their final dance together is typical of their on-screen relationship: unashamedly sentimental and shot through with humour.

As well as her acting career, Liz was a prominent and dedicated charity campaigner. In 2000 she raised more than £500,000 for a breast cancer appeal in her name and in the same year she was awarded an MBE for her charity work in hospitals in Manchester and Leeds.

In 2005 she met the Queen at a reception to mark ITV’s 50th anniversary where Her Majesty declared herself a fan.

After quitting Coronation Street, she took on a role as the public face of a campaign to raise awareness of chronic lung disease for the British Lung Foundation, speaking out against the smoking culture she saw during her early days singing.

“What people forget is that in my day people were encouraged to smoke,” she said. “It was very different then and it affects your mentality.”

In 2013 she suffered a heart attack while in Spain but despite failing health came out of retirement for one last soap appearance, in the 2015 Christmas Day episode of Emmerdale as a demanding B&B guest.

It was a typical Liz Dawn performance, all at once caustic, funny and oddly touching.

Yesterday tributes poured in. “When I think about Liz, I always have a smile on my face,” said Kevin Kennedy, who played the Duckworths’ former lodger Curly Watts for 20 years.

“That’s what we’ve got to be thinking about today – her wonderfulness and a very funny actress. I can only smile when I think of Liz. I can’t think of a better epitaph.”

Coronation Street spoilers: Aidan CONFESSES all in the most dramatic cobbles wedding EVER https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-aidan-confesses-all-in-the-most-dramatic-cobbles-wedding-ever/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-aidan-confesses-all-in-the-most-dramatic-cobbles-wedding-ever/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2017 22:20:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-aidan-confesses-all-in-the-most-dramatic-cobbles-wedding-ever/

Eva (played by Catherine Tyldsley) found out about her fiancé’s cheating months ago, and set about exacting revenge.

Going on a spending spree, the self-confessed diva maxed out Aidan’s (Shayne Ward) credit card and has been planning to shun her best friend, Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) in a cruel hen-do twist.

However, the wedding will be the main event as Aidan chooses to confess his sins to Eva, only to find out that she already knew.

Speaking at a recent press event, actress Catherine explained that the big reveal will be filled with stunts, saying: “I was very high up at one point – and I’m terrified of heights, so that was a real challenge for me.

“It’s very action-packed,” the 33-year-old teased.

The blonde beauty also hinted at the “game-changer” of a ceremony for the love triangle, adding: “Even when she found out about the affair she still really loved him which made her hate him even more.

“She can see the absolute sincerity in his eyes, and she can see how genuine he is and that he really does love her and the whole [affair] to him has been a massive mistake.

“It’s a huge game-changer for her. She had the whole day completely planned out to a T – she has this revenge plot firmly in her mind and all of a sudden she’s like, ‘He’s offering me everything I’ve ever wanted and he’s come clean,’ and things do start to change for her in her mind after that moment.”

Will Eva go ahead with her act of revenge or will she succumb to Aidan’s charms?

The ITV soap are said to be planning to run a brain tumour storyline with Rita Tanner (played by Barbara Knox) at the centre.

According to The Sun on Sunday, the Kabin owner will reject surgery to remove the growth, fearing she will lose her memory.

The diagnosis, which will be revealed in October, could reportedly end in tragedy for Rita, who has been experiencing forgetfulness in recent episodes.

One source told the newspaper: “It has been suggested she might have dementia, but she does not.

“In fact, she will be diagnosed with a tumour and her doctors will say there is a serious risk she will die if they don’t remove it.”

They added: “But Rita is terrified that she could not know who she is, or recognise her friends. All the indications are that this will end tragically.”

Actress Barbara, 83, first appeared in Corrie back in December 1964 before being made a regular character eight years later.

During her time, her alter ego has been married there times, while her abusive partner Alan Bradley was knocked down by a Blackpool tram.

Barbara won the Lifetime Achievement Award for her services to Coronation Street at the British Soap Awards in 2004.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.

Theresa May faces grilling by her own party as she cobbles together minority govt https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-faces-grilling-by-her-own-party-as-she-cobbles-together-minority-govt/ https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-faces-grilling-by-her-own-party-as-she-cobbles-together-minority-govt/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2017 10:59:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-faces-grilling-by-her-own-party-as-she-cobbles-together-minority-govt/ UK Prime Minister Theresa May is set to be questioned on Monday evening by a powerful committee of Conservative backbenchers after leading a disastrous election campaign, which cost the party its majority.

The prime minister will hold talks with the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers, who are expected to raise questions over her leadership and the terms of deal she is seeking with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

The Tory leader announced on Friday she intends to strike a “confidence and supply” deal with the Northern Irish party, which will give her the numbers she needs to get her legislative program through the House of Commons on June 19.

Cabinet ministers have warned May she must adopt a more “inclusive” approach that would see Conservative MPs becoming more involved in the business of government and policy-making.

Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, who retained his position after a cabinet reshuffle over the weekend, said: “Clearly a minority government requires a different approach. You’ve already seen some changes in personnel in No10 Downing Street. I welcome that, of course.

“It’s going to require a different approach, we’re going to see I hope more collective decision making in the Cabinet, I and other senior colleagues have made that clear to her,” he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

The chair of the 1922 Committee, Graham Brady, echoed this view and said that a more inclusive approach is a “necessity.

“There’s no doubt that we need to see a much more open and inclusive approach within government and within parliament as well. That’s not just a desirable outcome, it’s an absolute necessity in these circumstances,” he told the BBC’s Sunday Politics program on Sunday.

“Trying to make a hung parliament and a minority government work requires a much more inclusive approach and bringing people into the decision-making process.”

The backbench grilling comes as May seeks to overhaul some of her manifesto pledges, which contributed to the party’s poor election showing.

Rethinking the triple lock, which secures pensions to all, and proposals to means test winter fuel payments are thought to be among the manifesto pledges being shelved in a Tory bid to win confidence votes in the Commons.

Social care plans, which include the much criticized “dementia tax,” would also be overhauled. But the scope for the Great Repeal Bill, which will transfer thousands of EU laws into British ones, is bound to remain in the Queen’s Speech next week.

There has also been speculation that May intends to soften her stance on Brexit following the appointment of staunch EU supporter Damian Green as first secretary, essentially a second in command.

Green’s promotion from the work and pensions secretary brief comes as what was supposed to be a major victory reshuffle for May turned out to be a mere tweaking of her top team. It was feared that major changes to the cabinet could cause further uncertainty and instability for the Conservative Party.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd also held on to their positions. The most surprising addition to the Cabinet was former leadership challenger Michael Gove, who has returned as environment secretary.

But fellow Tory MPs have backed her leadership, including Johnson, who denied he is seeking to topple May.

“I think they have had enough of this stuff, I think what they want is for the politicians to get on, deliver Brexit and deliver on their priorities, and Theresa May is by far the best person, she is the best-placed person, to deliver that,” the Daily Mail reported him as saying.

May, however, has failed to confirm she will lead for a full term, saying she is only “getting on with the immediate job” for the time being.

Coronation Street spoiler: Phelan's daughter to stir up Cobbles with EXPLOSIVE entrance https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoiler-phelans-daughter-to-stir-up-cobbles-with-explosive-entrance/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoiler-phelans-daughter-to-stir-up-cobbles-with-explosive-entrance/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2017 10:36:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoiler-phelans-daughter-to-stir-up-cobbles-with-explosive-entrance/

The “feisty” newcomer (played by Nicola Thorpe) teased her upcoming debut, telling press including Express.co.uk that her stint on the show will bring out a new side to Phelan (Connor McIntyre).

Nicola explained: “When she arrives she obviously has no idea that this man could be her daughter – her parents are both dead as far as she is aware.

“She is Seb’s [Franklin] coworker and encourages him to have an apprenticeship at the Builders’ Yard and they form a relationship.

“She hasn’t really got anything to resent other than she’s lived a lie but ultimately that’s not Phelan’s fault but that lies with her parents not being honest.

“With both of her parents being dead I think she would be stupid not to let him in her life.

“It’s lovely as a fan of the show to see this side of him, and I get so excited to see this new side,” the 28-year-old added.

On top of this, Nicola teased that Phelan’s daughter is “warm, very caring, but fierce” and will be sticking around on the Cobbles for a while.

The actress, who appeared in Doctor Who opposite Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, added that Nicola did pick up some of her dad’s personality.

“There are a few moments where that [behaviour] comes out and that worries her…but I haven’t hit anyone on the head with a laptop yet!” she joked.

Coronation Street continues tomorrow on ITV at 7.30pm.
