The post If Tesla’s Stock Was a Roller Coaster… appeared first on The Truth About Cars. Countryfile delivered its five-day forecast earlier this evening as Darren Bett returned to screens to predict the coming week’s weather. It seems the week will be a mixed bag, as temperatures continue to soar and fall each day. Darren explained how the turbulent weather comes as a result of various fronts making their way across to the UK from the Atlantic. He started by discussing last week’s forecast, telling viewers: “What we’ve got here is the last seven days on the satellite picture and everything has been coming in – it’s been a roller coaster ride. “This cloud here was the remnants of tropical Storm Ernesto that’s moved away. The important thing is everything will continue to come in from the Atlantic over the week ahead.” Tomorrow will see a similar day to today, with a mixed bag of small patches of drizzle matched with sunny openings. The south east will see a high of 25, but the likes of Scotland and the north east may get the odd shower. Tuesday sees “warm and humid” air making its move, according to Darren. He explained: “Here we’ve got some really warm and humid air and that’s really trapped to the south of this weather front which is quite slow moving but that will steam towards the UK which will eventually buckle. “So eventually on Tuesday, we’ll see some rain coming into the far north west. “Elsewhere it will be a dry day and Tuesday will be a warm day.” Wednesday is set for highs of 27, perhaps 28, as the warm weather front brings along humid air, but with that comes the chance of rain in some areas. Darren went on to say how the mid-week high will be the “last” of the warm weather for the time being, as a northern weather front comes in. He continued: “That’s probably the last of the warm air for a while as we get this north west air flow. “That will tend to push down cooler and fresher air from the north west too. A few showers focussed on Scotland, but the temperatures will be a little bit lower across the board. “Top temperature this time of 23,” he told BBC viewers. Darren concluded his Countryfile forecast explaining how “fun and games” will take place over the next five days as the UK battles various weather forecasts. He said: “We’ve got that cooler and fresher air but it does allow some weather fronts to topple in from the Atlantic and these are moving pretty quickly actually. They’re bringing rain to the northern part of the UK. “As you head further south, it will be dry and sunny but temperatures won’t be as high as previously. “It’s going to be a week of fun and games as we’re going to have those Atlantic winds coming.” Countryfile continues next Sunday on BBC One at 7pm.

“Originally, some of the producers shared with me that an international LGBTQI storyline was coming down the pipeline, and they expressed interest in my being a part of that conversation,” says Sara Ramirez, who identifies as queer and bisexual and who has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ issues, as well as for marginalized communities. Series star Téa Leoni “was really supportive around me participating, as well, which I really appreciate,” she adds.

After watching the riveting and entertaining nearly two-hour film documentary Effortless French, about the rise and fall of Mt. Gox, the infamous bitcoin exchange, there are two questions (one big, one small) that are never fully answered. (Full disclosure: I was interviewed for this film and appear in multiple scenes, but I did not see any rough cut or portion of the film until I was recently sent a screener.)
First, we still don’t have a complete understanding of exactly what happened at Mt. Gox. We probably never will. It’s clear that the exchange’s Tokyo-based now-ex-CEO Mark Karpelès doesn’t really seem to know what happened either. Nor, for that matter, does he seem to be emotionally affected by it in any way that was captured on film.
Launched as a bitcoin exchange in 2010, Mt. Gox quickly became the world’s most popular place to trade. But by February 2014, the site pulled the plug and filed for bankruptcy. Mt. Gox blamed its huge losses on hackers who had pilfered 850,000 bitcoins (now worth over $ 8 billion), taking advantage of a major security flaw. At the time, Karpelès became the most hated person in the bitcoin world for letting it happen right under his nose.

Understandably, many of you might primarily know of The Wicker Man thanks to Neil LaBute’s 2006 remake starring Nicolas Cage, in which Cage’s character punches a woman in the face while dressed like a bear, and spends the movie furiously screaming things like “How’d it get burned?!” and “Not the bees!” But while it’s admittedly not nearly as meme-worthy, director Robin Hardy‘s 1973 original is a far superior and even more disturbing piece of filmmaking.
So naturally, it’s a perfect fit for a theme park ride! Wait…what?
It’s true. The theme park Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England, has constructed a The Wicker Man roller coaster…because millennials love ’70s horror movies, I guess? Stoke Sentinel reports that the wooden ride, which was previously code-named “Secret Weapon 8,” will be “the world’s first roller coaster to feature wood and fire in the same attraction.” The ride’s track is 2,028 feet long, and riders will witness a full-size wicker man statue – the most iconic image from the film – that stands nearly 60 feet tall in the middle of the attraction. According to the site, people will “pass through it three times during the ride, as it appears to burst into flames.” (So it sounds like there will be both simulated flames and real fire involved in some capacity.)
I first saw The Wicker Man in a college film class, and I remember feeling deeply unsettled for a few days afterward. The story follows a Christian police sergeant who visits a society on an isolated island on a search for a missing girl, and is horrified to discover that the populace there worships pagan gods and performs ritual sacrifices in order to ensure a bountiful harvest for the year. I won’t spoil anything else for you, but if you haven’t seen either version of The Wicker Man, I implore you to seek out the original before you watch the 2006 version.
Alton Towers seems to be asking for trouble by brazenly combining wood and fire in an attraction like this, but putting that and the question of relevance aside for a second, I’m not entirely sure why they would want a Wicker Man roller coaster. The same park already has Thirteen, a creepy horror coaster that’s been operational since 2010 in which riders “ride the Demon of the Dark Forest.” But more power to ’em, I guess.
In any case, the Wicker Man ride will be opening in Spring 2018.

(We’re going to kickstart our weekly discussion of USA’s Mr. Robot season 3 by answering one simple question: who had the biggest mental breakdown in this week’s episode?)
Long after the final credits rolled for “Shutdown,” the lyrics of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang” echoed in my head. “Bang bang/ He shot me down / bang bang / I hit the ground / Bang bang /that awful sound /bang bang / my baby shot me down.” I say Nancy Sinatra (sorry, Cher fans) even though the version of “Bang Bang” that was played in this episode was the Chinese version of the song, because it perfectly captures the haunting, quietly tragic mood of “Shutdown.”
The gripping third season ended not with a bang, but not quite a whimper either. That’s not to say “Shutdown” was a bad episode — far from it. It was a deftly paced and surprisingly subdued season finale for Mr. Robot, a show that writer/creator Sam Esmail has built up to regularly shock and upend audience expectations. But there were few complex machinations in the season 3 finale. “Shutdown” hinged on vulnerable character confessions and moments of clarity, as well as a few shocks of visceral brutality that Mr. Robot has become known for. Instead of an explosive follow-up to an adrenaline-packed and plot-heavy season, Esmail went for a different surprise: that of humble introspection.. And damn it, Esmail did it again.
“Music played and people sang /Just for me the church bells rang…”
Dom was introduced as a slightly pitiful character — and now her arc gets an equally pitiful and bitter ending. Grace Gummer has had a relatively thankless role up until now, playing the stoic ace FBI agent always kept on the outskirts of the action, so it was long time coming that she had her due. And she plays Dom’s raw, aching vulnerability so well. There was a glimpse of that lonely-heart vulnerability in last week’s penultimate episode, but I couldn’t tell whether she was trying to play Darlene too. But here it’s out in the open, and it’s heart-wrenching.
Dom gets the biggest revelation of her life when she discovers that her superior, Santiago, is the Dark Army mole. The unflagging FBI agent that she is, she barely lets it rankle her — it’s only when she’s being led to an execution block by Santiago and Irving outside of Tyrell’s old farmhouse that we finally see her cold countenance be shattered. Irving (Bobby Cannavale, once again stealing the show with his casual menace) calmly reassures Dom as she breaks down crying, resolute in her principles but horrified at facing her imminent death. “Look at the sky,” he says soothingly. “Try to enjoy the fresh air.” And in a classic Mr. Robot moment of shocking violence, we cut from a blue, nearly cloudless sky to Irving hurling an axe at Santiago’s chest, the blood splattering on Dom’s face. It’s a ghastly moment, made even more so because this is where Dom and Irving both crack. Irving screams, for the first time since we’ve met this odd and apathetic salesman, and Dom weeps as she agrees to be the new FBI mole.
I wonder if this will be the last we see of Dom — a compromised agent, spitting venomously at Darlene. The Dark Army is ostensibly no longer a major player in Elliot’s life anymore, having achieved what they wanted. Perhaps Dom will fade into memory as the ghostly apparition she has always appeared to be — on the fringes, on the edge of Darlene’s mind as another life she has ruined.
“Seasons came and changed the time / When I grew up, I called him mine…”
Christian Slater may have received his third Golden Globe nod this year, but it’s Rami Malek who proves time and again why he is the star of this show. The Globes has long overlooked Rami Malek’s frantic, unhinged performance, and it was in full, desperate display in this episode. Elliot is in flight-or-fight mode for the entirety of the episode, frightened that his actions have put Darlene right in the crosshairs of the Dark Army. He panics, trashing fsociety’s arcade, in hopes that it would draw out Mr. Robot. But his pleas for help fall on deaf ears, and the flurry of emotions that flash across Malek’s face as he goes from panicked, despondent, to guilty, is a sight to behold. “This is on me,” he repeats to himself, slumping to the floor.
But this all leads up to the first scene shared between Malek and Slater all season. While keeping the two actors separately hasn’t hurt the series — it’s only served the heighten the isolation and narrow POVs that season 3 has been going for — it is comforting to bask in Malek and Slater’s crackling chemistry again. Though Mr. Robot frequently plays with Elliot’s dissociative identity disorder as a plot device, with Mr. Robot himself never developing beyond the disaffected, wrathful maverick, the compromise between them is real climax of this episode. The scene between them on the ferris wheel is one of many shots that echo the first season — the subway where they first met, the station where they frequently met — which feed into Esmail’s frequent hints of a return to the beginning, a restart. They may not be able to return to the wary friendship they first had, but Elliot can finally accept that Mr. Robot is a pivotal part of himself, and vice versa. It’s a moment of self-acceptance that happens quietly, but it speaks volumes.
“He didn’t even say goodbye / He didn’t take the time to lie…”
Detained by Irving, Elliot and Mr. Robot are brought to Tyrell’s barn (Tyrell noticeably absent from this episode) to join the captive Darlena and Dom, watched by Santiago and Leon. It’s a mundane, naturalistic place to hold the climax of the episode, but it works to amplify the extreme emotions and actions of each character. If you were to block out what happened in this episode — apart from Irving’s attack against Santiago — nothing much really happens. People yell at each other, have tense conversations, Whiterose takes a bath. But it just works.
The episode hinged on character-driven betrayals and compromises. Elliot and Mr. Robot. Dom and Darlene. Irving and Grant. Angela and Philip Price. Whiterose and Grant.
It all plays out in one tense scene, the episode skillfully cutting between the barn and Philip Price’s mansion, where Angela is being held. Tensions rise to a boiling point in the barn as Leon’s gun settles against Darlene’s head, Elliot desperately yelling that he can cut a deal with the Dark Army, finally promising to send their assets to the Congo — a plan Whiterose had been working on for months. Meanwhile, Angela coldly addresses Philip outside his mansion, refusing to listen to his explanations until he drops the bomb: he’s her father. The back-and-forth is one of Mr. Robot‘s most understated scenes, but the swelling electronic synths compounded by eerie strings make it another brilliant moment for the books. It ends in sudden silence, when Leon everyone in the barn except Darlene, Dom, Elliot, and Grant, and Angela staring in disbelief at Philip. As the strings slowly swell again, Grant receives a call from Whiterose bidding him a tearful goodbye as Angela finally breaks down crying, horrified at the lives she helped take.
“He wore black and I wore white / He would always win the fight…”
The only winners here are the Dark Army, who promise to leave Elliot and co. alone now that they’ve received what they wanted all along. Elliot and Darlene are left with their empty promises of undoing the hack. But Esmail’s hints of a better parallel world were all for naught. They can never bring things back to how they were before. The only action that can be taken for everyone is what Philip Price tells Angela when she foolishly asks for retribution: “Live with what you did.” Those hints that Esmail kept planting of a better world were little more than clues at Elliot’s own self-determination — not some fantastical twist of parallel dimensions. Those Back to the Future hints were no more than a clue at Elliot and his father’s increasingly murky relationship. It’s a damning revelation, one that indicts the viewers who hope that we live in “the darkest timeline” and that things can snap back to better times.
But Elliot is determined, and maybe in denial. He may have made peace with himself, but he will be at peace with the world — resolving to go after the top 1% of the top 1% that had been revealed to Mr. Robot to control everything.
While Elliot plots, Darlene is faced with reality, in the form of a college-educated prostitute who tells her that the only way to fix the “crony capitalism” of the world is an act of God. That’s when Darlene is suddenly faced with a familiar character now calling himself “a brave traveler who has finally come home.” It’s the drug kingpin who Elliot helped imprison and bust out of prison — only to find that he had killed Shayla. He’s back, and more threatening than ever — offering an enticing hint at where the upcoming season 4 will go.

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:
Get ready to saddle up for a lightcycle power run at Walt Disney World. The resort has filed permits for its Tron coaster with the state of Florida. At Shanghai Disneyland, this attraction has already made great waves (or light trails, as the case may be), and now it is expected to open next to Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom in time for the park’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
If you’re ready to fly solo through space, Inside the Magic reports that the Space Mountain at California’s Disneyland has recently been testing out a Single Rider line. Possibly as a further measure of regulating crowds, the park has suspended sales of its Southern California Passport to new customers, though this is not the first time they have done that and the popular annual pass may be available again at some indeterminate future date.

In other news, Marvel’s Black Panther is coming to Disney California Adventure in 2018. The character is expected to take the place of Thor and Loki, whose new meet-and-greet we reported on a couple weeks back. If you see a pattern developing here, these limited-time meet-and-greets are clearly aimed at promoting new Marvel Studios films and/or taking advantage of the surge of interest those films bring to their characters.
Marvel itself has also now given a first look at the Marvel Day at Sea on the Disney Magic cruise ship, where you can meet many more Marvel characters. Doctor Strange will be hosting his own brand-new interactive show, “Journey Into the Mystic Arts,” and Iron Man will be leading a stage show whose “epic finale culminates in the largest collection of Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains ever assembled on a cruise ship.”
If you do not know the name Harper Goff, by now you are surely familiar with seeing some of his imaginative concepts brought to life at Disney parks. As The Walt Disney Museum explains, Goff was an artist who has been termed “The Second Imagineer” (with Walt Disney himself being the first). Among other things, he helped design the original Main Street, U.S.A. and Jungle Cruise at Disneyland.
Goff’s influence can also be felt at Tokyo DisneySea, where early concepts for a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Vulcania attraction and an unbuilt land called Discovery Bay would eventually find their way into the creation of Mysterious Island and Port Discovery, two of the sea-themed park’s “ports of call.” For reference, here is a look at the original concept for Vulcania, versus the current map segment and real-life steampunk cove of Mysterious Island at DisneySea.
Goff’s Vulcania design and others fetched high prices in a New York auction this week.
Last week, I solicited comments from any and all Avatar fans as part of a general discussion of the obscure subculture of people who speak Na’vi (the fictional language of James Cameron’s blue aliens species of the same name). Big surprise: no one commented. Yet as if to prove the continued cultural relevance of Avatar, at least as a theme park property, the Flight of Passage ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom posted a staggering wait time of 305 minutes this week. Well-played, Avatar. “I see you,” indeed.
Who wants more Tim Tracker? The ornately mustachioed YouTuber is back on the theme park frontline this season with a look at some of the Christmas goings-on at Disney World and Universal Orlando. If you could not make it to the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Expo 2017, you can vicariously experience the theme park and roller coaster tech there through his videos.
Not to be outdone, “Jolly Junior Reporter” Lindalee Rose has her own look at the Top 10 things to see and do at Disneyland Resort for the holiday this year.
Similar to how it becomes “Knott’s Scary Farm” for Halloween, Christmas is the time when Knott’s Berry Farm becomes “Knott’s Merry Farm.” Since this park is the province of Peanuts characters like Snoopy and Charlie Brown, guests can expect to experience plenty of holiday fun with those characters. Inside the Magic has more details on the event, as well as a nice stream of photos showing the fun in action.
A few last bits, related to Universal…
The Universal Orlando blog has revealed new panels and other experiences for the Celebration of Harry Potter event in January, including an appearance by Bonnie Wright, the actress who played Ginny Weasley in the film series. If you collect the wizard cards that come with Chocolate Frogs on sale at the Wizarding World, a new card will soon be entering the mix for completists to snatch up.
Finally, Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing back its New Year’s Eve fireworks. The last time these fireworks lit up the night sky was back in 2014.
