But it has also been busy studying Jupiter’s moons, including capturing images of Io and Europa and capturing not only the sights but also the sounds of the moon Ganymede. Now Juno will get to see Europa in even more detail as it is set to perform a close flyby of the icy moon this week.

On Thursday, September 29, Juno will pass within 222 miles (358 kilometers) of Europa and should be able to capture some of the highest-ever resolution images of its surface, as well as gather data on its interior and the edge of its atmosphere. Europa is a particularly exciting place to study because it is thought to be one of the best places in the solar system for life to have evolved apart from Earth. It is getting its own mission called Europa Clipper to be launched in 2024.

Jupiter’s moon Europa.
This image of Jupiter’s moon Europa was taken by the JunoCam imager aboard NASA’s Juno spacecraft on Oct. 16, 2021, from a distance of about 51,000 miles (82,000 kilometers). Image data: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS. Image processing: Andrea Luck CC BY

“Europa is such an intriguing Jovian moon, it is the focus of its own future NASA mission,” said Juno Principal Investigator Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute, in a statement. “We’re happy to provide data that may help the Europa Clipper team with mission planning, as well as provide new scientific insights into this icy world.”

Getting the spacecraft to pass so close to the moon while keeping it safe requires tremendous coordination. The maneuvers required to get close to Europa will change Juno’s orbit around Jupiter from a period of 43 days to 38 days. And the relative speeds are extremely fast, so the team will begin data collection one hour before the spacecraft’s closest approach to the moon.

“The relative velocity between spacecraft and moon will be 14.7 miles per second (23.6 kilometers per second), so we are screaming by pretty fast,” said John Bordi, Juno deputy mission manager at JPL. “All steps have to go like clockwork to successfully acquire our planned data, because soon after the flyby is complete, the spacecraft needs to be reoriented for our upcoming close approach of Jupiter, which happens only 7 ½ hours later.”

As it is so far from the sun, the surface of Europa is very cold and is covered in a thick layer of ice. But researchers believe there is a saltwater ocean beneath this crust, which could potentially support life. They know this because previous research has observed plumes of water being thrown up into the moon’s atmosphere. If we are very, very lucky, there is even a chance that Juno could catch such a plume to observe it in more detail.

“We have the right equipment to do the job, but to capture a plume will require a lot of luck,” said Bolton. “We have to be at the right place at just the right time, but if we are so fortunate, it’s a home run for sure.”

Scotland’s busiest airport will temporarily close its airspace and cancel flights when the Queen’s coffin is moved to London https://briefnews.eu/scotlands-busiest-airport-will-temporarily-close-its-airspace-and-cancel-flights-when-the-queens-coffin-is-moved-to-london/ https://briefnews.eu/scotlands-busiest-airport-will-temporarily-close-its-airspace-and-cancel-flights-when-the-queens-coffin-is-moved-to-london/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 11:11:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/scotlands-busiest-airport-will-temporarily-close-its-airspace-and-cancel-flights-when-the-queens-coffin-is-moved-to-london/ The coffin carrying the body of Queen Elizabeth II began its journey to London.
The coffin carrying the body of Queen Elizabeth II began its journey to London from Balmoral.

  • Edinburgh airport will temporarily close its airspace when the Queen's coffin is flown to London.
  • Some flights due to leave on Tuesday afternoon will be grounded, delayed, or canceled.
  • The Queen's coffin is currently traveling across the UK before her funeral on September 19.

Scotland's busiest airport plans to temporarily close its airspace on Tuesday to ensure Queen Elizabeth II's coffin is transported to London safely.

Although the airport will remain open to passengers during this time, the airspace closure will mean some flights are grounded, delayed, or canceled on Tuesday afternoon, the airport confirmed to local media outlet Edinburgh Live.

Representatives for Edinburgh airport did not immediately respond to Insider's request for confirmation.

Scottish regional airport, Loganair, warned travelers that some flights had been rescheduled.

The company said via a Facebook post: "If you're traveling with us to or from Edinburgh on Tuesday 13 September, some Loganair flights have been re-timed or combined due to closure of the airport during the late afternoon to enable HM The Queen's final journey from Scotland to take place."

The airline also warned passengers traveling to the airport that there will be "several road closures and likely more traffic and congestion than normal."

The late Queen's coffin is currently traveling across the UK before her funeral in London on Monday 19 September.

On Sunday, the Queen's coffin traveled by road to Edinburgh's Palace of Holyrood from Balmoral Castle where she died on Thursday. It was laid to rest overnight in the Palace and will be moved on Monday to lie in St Giles' Cathedral until Tuesday afternoon when it is flown to London, the Mirror reported.

The coffin is due to land at a Royal Air Force base in London at 6:00 p.m. It will then travel by hearse to Westminster Hall, where it will lie in state until the funeral, with the public able to visit the coffin and pay their respects.

American Idol Recap: Jewel and More Stars Close Out Top 24 Duets — Watch and Vote For Your Favorites https://briefnews.eu/american-idol-recap-jewel-and-more-stars-close-out-top-24-duets-watch-and-vote-for-your-favorites/ https://briefnews.eu/american-idol-recap-jewel-and-more-stars-close-out-top-24-duets-watch-and-vote-for-your-favorites/#respond Tue, 06 Apr 2021 06:30:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/american-idol-recap-jewel-and-more-stars-close-out-top-24-duets-watch-and-vote-for-your-favorites/

The second half of American Idol‘s Top 24 sang for viewers’ votes on Monday, taking the stage opposite some true music icons, from Jewel and Josh Groban to Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd. (Guys, remember Incubus?!)

Read on for our breakdown of the night’s performances, with video for each:

JASON WARRIOR, 25 | The first solo performance of the night, The Weeknd’s “Call Out My Name,” may have started out smooth and chill, but things took a very sudden, very emotional turn. By the end of Warrior’s performance, he was on his knees, seemingly in tears. When he met with duet partner PJ Morton, he asked how he can take his music outside the walls of the church. The solution, apparently, was to bring the church to Idol, resulting in a truly unexpected take on the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love.” There’s no denying Warrior’s natural talent (Lionel Richie even said, “It does not get any better than that”), but sometimes I wonder if Warrior needs to lay it on so thick with every performance. A little variation never hurt anybody. Click here to watch.

MADISON WATKINS, 26 | First of all, Watkins managed to change my (previously negative) opinion about Justin Bieber’s “Holy,” which is a feat in and of itself. It was a good choice for her solo, as it felt current and showed off quite a bit of her range. Tori Kelly was also an inspired choice as Watkins’ duet partner for Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” even if she suffers from Ryan Tedder syndrome. (We already know Kelly can sing. She didn’t need to totally outshine her partner with those runs.) Luke Bryan called her a “natural entertainer,” while Richie commended her for reacting to what Kelly was doing, instead of focusing on her own prepared part. Click here to watch.

BEANE, 23 | I feel like we’re really witnessing an artistic evolution with Beane, even if his borderline cheesy performance of Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” reminded me that, oh yeah, he’s definitely a wedding singer. Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” which he then sang alongside Groban, was a much better fit. He opened his mouth and loveliness poured out, complementing Groban’s voice perfectly. (I was not expecting him to be able to hold his own opposite Groban, but he totally did.) Extra points to Beane for swapping “she” with “he” as an act of “defiance.” Watch:

HANNAH EVERHART, 17 | I genuinely enjoy this young star on the rise, so it pains me to say that her solo performance of Chris Stapleton’s “I Was Wrong” was… not her best. She was then introduced to Jason Aldean, with whom she shared some ribs before sharing the stage. The judges enjoyed what she put forward, for the most part, but they urged her to believe in herself more. Frankly, I’m just disappointed that we never found out about the chicken she was supposed to send Claudia Conway via FedEx “dead or alive.” Which one was it, Everhart?! Click here to watch.

MARY JO YOUNG, 19 | Real talk: I’m so sick of hearing Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill,” so I appreciated that Young at least switched things up a bit in order to show off her range. And don’t even get me started on her duet with Jewel. I was already excited for “Foolish Games,” and that was before my ears were blessed enough to hear their voices on it together. The tight harmonies, the growling, the hat — all of it! I’m pretty sure I blacked out during this performance, and when I came to, I saw that I had just written “Yes! Yes! YES!” over and over. It was that good. Watch:

CHAYCE BECKHAM, 24 | Oh, another Sheeran song? You. Don’t. Say. Beckham picked “Afterglow” for his solo performance this week, and while it wasn’t incredible, it was definitely solid. As Bryan noted, it kind of felt like Bruce Springsteen’s take on the song. I’m not sure I would have paired him with Boyd for his duet, as their polar-opposite voices struggled in the blending department, but it was still a good performance. And I’ll take any excuse to revisit “Drive.” Click here to watch.

COLIN JAMIESON, 22 | It’s easy to forget how high most Bruno Mars songs are, since he makes them sound so effortless, but those notes aren’t easy. Yet Jamieson managed to absolutely slay “Locked Out of Heaven” without breaking a sweat. (That said, I kind of wish he hadn’t bothered to pick up the guitar midway through, as it only took away from his incredible vocals.) Then came his duet with Kelly, who apparently only teams up with other heads of luscious hair. And while their collective hair game was definitely strong, their vocals on “Hollow” were even stronger. This was one of the best duets of the night for me. Watch:

LIAHONA OLAYAN, 17 | I’ve felt that this firecracker has been radio-ready and highly marketable from Day 1, and her solo performance of Audrey Mixa’s “Just Friends” only served to reinforce that belief. Joining Morton for a dramatic duet of “Say So” was a risky move for Olayan, who admitted to having a fear of showing her vulnerability, but it was definitely worth it. She held her own on stage with Morton, and the judges were right to celebrate how far she’s come. Click here to watch.

AVA AUGUST, 15 | The irony of August performing Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” as her solo, when she herself isn’t even old enough to operate a car on her own, is not lost on me. And neither is August’s incredible voice, which holds a beautiful quality well beyond her years. Come on, if you can give Groban chills, you know you’ve got it. Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” was an inspired choice for a duet, and the end result was absolutely stunning, like it was meant for her to sing. The judges likened her to Judy Garland, which I hadn’t considered. I have, however, considered how stupid I was for not including August in our (extremely) early Top 10 predictions list. I’m really kicking myself for that one. Watch:

CALEB KENNEDY, 16 | Remember how tough Bryan was on Alex Miller earlier this season, constantly trying to steer him away from old-school country in the hopes of discovering a fresher sound? That’s kind of how I feel about Kennedy, who delivered a good — but not terribly exciting — cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider.” His duet, “Fly Over States” opposite Jason Aldean, was also kind of a snooze-fest. The judges clearly disagree with me, as they praised Kennedy for being “possessed by a very old, seasoned countryman.” Is that really a good thing for this competition? Click here to watch.

HUNTER METTS, 22 | When I first saw that Metts was taking on Sia’s “Chandelier,” my head cocked to the side like a tiny dog trying to understand human-speak. But once he began his stripped-down take on the ubiquitous jam, I started to get into it. I did find it a bit sleepy, though, and I noticed that not a single judge stood up for it. Metts got a second shot, duetting with Jewel (who immediately drew the Ryan Phillippe comparison) on the singer’s timeless classic “Foolish Games.” She challenged hm to deliver a big vocal moment, but it never quite manifested, resulting in a performance that really only showcased Jewel’s voice — which sounds better than ever, by the way. I actually thought the judges were too nice about this one. Where’s Simon Cowell when you need him? Click here to watch.

CASEY BISHOP, 15 | Best solo of the night? Best solo of both nights? Either way, Bishop sang the hell out of Paramore’s “Decode,” and the producers knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to end the night with her. I wish she had been paired with Jewel for her duet, but Boyd wasn’t a bad choice — nor was “Wish You Were Here,” a song I haven’t thought about in at least a decade. This girl is Top 5 material, no question. Watch:

BBC News has Simon McCoy close to tears with farewell tribute ‘Getting chocked up’ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-has-simon-mccoy-close-to-tears-with-farewell-tribute-getting-chocked-up/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-has-simon-mccoy-close-to-tears-with-farewell-tribute-getting-chocked-up/#respond Thu, 25 Mar 2021 18:46:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-has-simon-mccoy-close-to-tears-with-farewell-tribute-getting-chocked-up/

The newsreader is leaving BBC News after a career spanning almost 18 years. Simon McCoy has since announced plans to join up with veteran BBC interviewer Andrew Neil at GB News. Marking his final appearance on BBC News on Thursday, the presenter was clearly moved by the occasion. He admitted to “getting chocked up” after watching a highlight reel paying tribute to some of his most memorable interviews and clips.

Speaking following the tribute, Simon said: “Just watching that, yes, we cover the serious stuff but perhaps the most remarkable thing I have ever done is the annual D-Day commemorations at Arromanches and talking to veterans.

“Do you know we have a fantastic job, we meet some amazing people.”

Fighting back tears, he added: “Sorry, I’m getting choked up.

“Just watching that interview, you meet fabulous people.”

The popular newsreader built up a strong fanbase of BBC viewers as a result of his dry-humour, hilarious on-screen gaffs and famous sarcastic responses to royal baby news.

The news Simon was leaving BBC news broke on Twitter earlier this morning when he began retweeting messages from colleagues who had been paying tribute to the much-loved presenter.

He first reposted a tweet from his Floor Manager, Niall Jackson, who posted a series of photographs of them together with the caption: “If you think he’s a handful on-screen, imagine what he’s like off it? Only got to floor manage 4 years of his 17+ at @BBCNews so was nice to do his final week.

“Made the dreariest of heavy news days instantly more manageable. May the road rise up to meet you @BBCSimonMcCoy Sláinte.”

Meanwhile, GB News founder Andrew Neil announced the BBC host has joined his new venture.

Mr Neil wrote on Twitter: “Oh yes. Simon McCoy is joining GB News… another great hire!”

Director of News and Programmes, John McAndrew, said: “Simon’s journalistic integrity, warmth and personality is a perfect fit for what we’re doing at GB News.

“He’s a brilliant journalist with an exceptional ability to relate to people in an upbeat way so we’re keen to get him out from behind a desk and talking to people from all parts of the United Kingdom.”

He continued: “We dress up, we’ve got all these frocks on and it’s glamorous and there’s the music playing,

“But, at the end of the day, it’s also dangerous,” Christopher pointed out.

The Dancing On Ice favourite then explained exactly what happened between Rebekah and her partner Andy which led to him needing medical attention.

Christopher clarified: “One of the lifts that she was doing, she was coming out of a somersault and the heel of her blade went into Andy, her partner’s, cheek.”

Big Sky Recap: Close, But No Legarski https://briefnews.eu/big-sky-recap-close-but-no-legarski/ https://briefnews.eu/big-sky-recap-close-but-no-legarski/#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2020 13:22:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/big-sky-recap-close-but-no-legarski/

RELATED STORIES

Welp, looks like we’ve found the thing that pushes Big Sky‘s Rick Legarski — misogynist, human trafficker and murderer — over the edge.

And that thing? A little social dancing.

Granted, the hot tepid two-step action involves Legarski’s neglected wife Merilee and Ronald, of all people. (Not that Rick knows that last part, at least not yet.) But the mere idea of Merilee going out for a social evening and interacting with men who are not Rick seems to throw the already strung-out state trooper into a tizzy. By the end of the episode, he’s poised to do something maybe quite terrible with a hammer.

In other news: Jenny hatches a really bad plan, and Cassie gets thisclose to the missing women. Read on for the highlights of “Unfinished Business.”

big-sky-recap-season-1-episode-4-SPILLED MILK  | The news has finally caught wind of the Sullivan sisters’ disappearance (and Jerrie’s, though she’s not referenced by name). Ronald watches the report over breakfast, and Helen — who can tell something is up with her son — stares at him. “I don’t like to be looked at or talked to while I’m having my cereal,” he complains, and for a startling moment, Ronald and I find some common ground. “Young pretty girls… coincides with your urges. Do you have something to tell me, Ronald?” she asks. By way of an answer, he pours his full cereal bowl over her head.

I cannot tell you how much I love the way Valerie Mahaffey elegantly plucks a tissue from a box and delicately dabs at the sopping mess of Froot Loops or whatever that is now dripping from her head. It is poetry. She lets him know that she still believes there’s more good in him than bad — but the moment the scales tip the other way, she’ll do the right thing. And then Ronald, who’s just gotten a call from Rick that they’re going to hand off the captives to a different trafficking syndicate that evening, tells Helen that he will do “what is necessary.”

big-sky-recap-season-1-episode-4-THERE’S NO ‘MOM’ IN TEAM | Later, at the All In, Legarski is on edge because Jenny has gotten her old boss, Sheriff Walter, to call Legarski to to Helena for a meeting. And when Ronald casually mentions that Helen is suspicious of him, the highway patrolman goes off. “I’m beginning to think you’re a loose end, Ronald,” raising his voice and insinuating that he’s ready to tie that loose end into a bloody knot. But the trucker isn’t worried, because he has what he calls an “insurance policy”: If anything happens to him, “the trail leads right to you.”

So Legarski goes to see Walt and MAGAs all over his office, triggered by the fact that Cassie (a 1) Black 2) woman) has filed a complaint against him. He’s all “Blue lives matter” this and “cancel culture” that until he leaves and runs into Jenny and Cassie in the driveway. What he doesn’t know: Cassie has planted a tracker on his SUV.

big-sky-recap-season-1-episode-4-ALL SEWN UP | Meanwhile — and I do believe this may have something to do with the aforementioned insurance policy — Ronald visits the quilt shop belonging to Merilee Legarski, Rick’s wife. The trucker is full of compliments in a way that unnerves her yet ultimately charms her. (I’m going to overlook the fact that she gives him the “COVID discount” yet they are standing fewer than 6 ft. apart and no one wears, holds nor mentions a mask and GOOD GOD I LOOK FORWARD TO A FUTURE WHERE I DON’T HAVE TO BE BOTHERED BY SOMETHING LIKE THIS.) Anyway, he mentions that he’s a taxi dancer and that she should come by the weekly social dance event sometime, buys a quilt and leaves.

So she puts on a pretty dress and does. Eventually, they dance. He tells her that they’re both lonely, but he’s not looking for anything, because he’s been hurt before.

FESTERING SITUATION | In their prison, Danielle and Jerrie are very worried about Grace, whose wound is infected. She has a high fever and has come up with a plan that they’ll have to take some of the maggots from a can of SPAM HAMM and plant them in the wound in order to clean up some of the diseased tissue. Which is very smart and all, but Outlander has taught us that maggots are good for cleaning up dead tissue… not for quelling raging infections. So she gets worse, and after she pukes on Ronald during a visit, he has Legarski come by with some heavy-duty antibiotics. He jabs them into Grace’s leg, then leaves.

big-sky-recap-season-1-episode-4-UNDERCOVER MOTHER | Working off the surveillance tapes from the night Jerrie went missing, Cassie and Jenny narrow the field of truckers that might’ve kidnapped the women. But then Jenny gets a hunch about the very first shady guy they happen across, so she immediately decides to pose as a prostitute in order to gain access to his cab and see what DNA evidence she can collect. (That sounds like a dumb double entendre, but it’s really exactly what she wants to do.)

But Jenny needs backup, so Cassie watches from a distance and swoops in when the trucker turns out to be a germaphobe who isn’t buying Jenny’s story that she’s actually a cop. He pulls a knife. She takes him down in the parking lot. He pulls a gun. Cassie swoops in. Both women are fine, and the guy gets arrested, but they’ve now essentially made a huge spectacle of themselves in front of a lot of drivers, right? What are the chances Ronald will hear about it soon?

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR | When Merilee comes home, Ronald angrily demands to know where she’s been. So she tells him. “I’m not having an affair. No such luck. Just dancing, which I’ll settle for,” she says before she goes up to bed. Later, we see Rick walk upstairs menacingly, with a hammer in his hand. Guys, I don’t think he’s going to hang a picture frame with that thing.

Meanwhile, Denise lets Cassie and Jenny know that the tracker placed Rick at a spot in the middle of nowhere earlier that evening. So they go there, and wind up at the barn-looking thing where he and Ronald are keeping Jerrie, Grace and Danielle. Cassie and Jenny get inside and are literally standing directly above where the trio is locked up, but they can’t hear them screaming for help. So the two women leave without realizing how close they came to finding the very people they’re looking for.

“They’ve done video calls, FaceTime, and all of the rest of it. We haven’t seen a great deal of them out if public.

“You will recall that picture that they took on Remembrance Sunday when they went to the Los Angeles cemetery. Some people criticised them for that but we haven’t seen them much in public.

“Therefore, I suppose that is a lot easier to keep something like this private.

“Much easier perhaps than it would have been if for example, they had still been in the royal family.

“It is quite unusual for someone to talk about miscarriage in such an open and personal way.”

Rachel Maddow to Miss Election Coverage, Will Quarantine After Close Contact Tests Positive for COVID-19 https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/ https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/#respond Sat, 07 Nov 2020 00:51:09 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/

One of MSNBC’s biggest stars is being forced to sit out the cable news network’s continuing election coverage.

Rachel Maddow will be off the air indefinitely and in quarantine at home after a close contact tested positive for the coronavirus, the host announced on Friday. “I’ve tested negative thus far, but will be at home quarantining ’til it’s safe for me to be back at work without putting anyone at risk,” Maddow said in a tweet. She will miss at least Friday’s edition of her primetime MSNBC show, which airs weekdays at 9/8c and is among the top-rated news programs on cable. It’s not yet known when she might return to on-air duty.

This has happened, of course, at an inconvenient time, as the 2020 presidential election is still undecided after three days of vote counting. Cable news ratings have soared as viewers tune in to see the latest vote counts from still-undecided states like Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada. (Democratic challenger Joe Biden leads at press time with 253 electoral votes, to President Donald Trump’s 214.)

MSNBC anchors Nicolle Wallace, Joy Reid and Brian Williams, along with breakout analyst Steve Kornacki, will pick up the slack in Maddow’s absence. “Wishing everyone patience and calm; may these remarkable times bring out the best in us,” Maddow concluded, before adding: “See you soon!”

“Right then Holly, it’s just you left in,” he noted.

Alas, despite getting the third question right, Holly’s poor decision making culminated in choosing the wrong drop zone, which added zero pounds to her kitty.

With his head in his hands, Ben bid farewell to the young contestant: “No Holly, no! So close.”

He added: “I’m sorry Holly, that means we’re going to lose you at the end of the round.”

Fans watching from home were in utter awe at her errors, wondering if she has mistaken the rules of how to play the game.

“Turn off #tippingpoint it’s goodbye Holly, don’t think she understood the game to be honest #pass,” one said.
