A perfectly intact frozen cave lion cub, recently discovered in Russia’s Siberian Republic of Yakutia, may provide scientists with a chance to bring the prehistoric predator back to life… By cloning it.

The cave lion cub, which froze between 20,000 or 50,000 years ago, was discovered by local subsoil developers in permafrost on the banks of the Tirekhtyakh River of the Abyisky district of Yakutia in early autumn. Thawing permafrost revealed the animal, researchers at the Academy of Science of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) said as they presented the find to the public last week.

The cub was around one and a half to two months old when it died, the biologists said. Its sex and precise age will be established during further research, which may take several years, they added. Two intact cave lion cubs discovered in Yakutia made headlines in 2015, but the newly-found animal is “even better preserved,” Albert Protopopov, who heads the Department of Study of Mammoth Fauna at the Academy, said.

According to Protopopov, the uniquely preserved condition of the cub may even see the cave lion species brought back to life. “Cloning via classical technology when the nucleus of a living cell is implanted in an egg is impossible. But nowadays serious work is being undertaken in terms of reconstructing the DNA and one may try to incorporate the restored DNA of the cave lion into the DNA of the modern lion,” he said.

“Since the cave lions are very close relatives of modern African lions, the possibility of their revival is much higher than that of the mammoth, which has no relatives closer than that of the Indian elephant,” Protopopov added as cited by Tass.

The cave lion lived in the Late Pleistocene era, the same period as the wooly mammoth, and went extinct around 10,000 years ago. The predator was slightly larger than the modern lion, lacking a mane and a tassel at the end of the tail.

Scientists from the Mammoth Museum of the North-Eastern Federal University together with their South Korean colleagues are now working to rebuild the DNA structure from a well-preserved mammoth skin found in Yakutia in 2015 with hopes of cloning the animal in the future.

US District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto ruled on Wednesday that Shkreli’s post on September 4 showed he posed a danger to the public.

In that post, the 34-year-old offered a generous bounty to anyone who could steal a hair from former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton while she was on her book tour.

“The Clinton Foundation is willing to KILL to protect its secrets. So on HRC’s book tour, try to grab a hair from her. I must confirm the sequences I have. Will pay $ 5,000 per hair obtained from Hillary Clinton,” the Facebook post stated.

Although Shkreli’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, argued the post fell under the right to free speech, Judge Matsumoto disagreed.

“This is a solicitation of assault in exchange for money,” the judge said. “That is not protected by the First Amendment.”

Matsumoto was also unsympathetic to a letter written to her by Shkreli on Tuesday, in which the 34-year-old said the Facebook post was meant as satire.

Brafman maintained that line on Wednesday, prompting the judge to pointedly ask: “What’s funny about that?”

Matsumoto noted that one of Shkreli’s 93,000 Facebook followers could have taken the post seriously, setting out on a mission to steal a piece of Clinton’s hair.

The judge also pointed to a July post by Shkreli in which he said he would have sex with journalist Lauren Duca as part of a pattern of threatening behavior. Shkreli was banned from Twitter in January for harassing Duca after she refused his invitation to attend US President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The judge’s ruling ordered that Shkreli’s bail be revoked, resulting in jail time for the former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, who was convicted in August of defrauding investors of two hedge funds he ran, MSMB Capital and MSMB Healthcare.

Brafman unsuccessfully pleaded with Matsumoto following the ruling, asking her to reconsider sending Shkreli to what he said would be a maximum security jail, or at least give him until Monday to prove he was not a threat.

“We are obviously disappointed,” Brafman told reporters outside the Brooklyn, New York, courthouse.

“We believed that the court arrived at the wrong decision. But she’s the judge, and right now we will have to live with this decision.”

Shkreli had been enjoying his freedom since his arrest in December 2015, after paying a bail of $ 5 million.

Matsumoto scheduled Shkreli’s sentencing for the securities fraud conviction for January 16. His charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years, but the 34-year-old is expected to serve much less, partly because none of the investors involved in his schemes lost any money.

Shkreli became a household name in 2015 when he raised the price of the anti-infection drug Daraprim by 5,000 percent, from $ 13.50 to $ 750 a pill.

That move resulted in him being dubbed “Pharma Bro” and “the most hated man in America,” as people with weakened immune systems – including AIDS patients – have come to rely on the pill.

Following a backlash from politicians, patients’ rights groups and Twitter users, Shkreli eventually announced his company had agreed to “lower the price of Daraprim to a point that is more affordable and is able to allow the company to make a profit, but a very small profit,” ABC News reported at the time.

The world was stunned when scientists revealed back in February 1997 that they had successfully cloned a tiny white animal several months earlier. Dolly the sheep — named after country music legend Dolly Parton — was nothing short of an international sensation. Few had dreamed before her arrival that science could produce a cloned mammal. But the success saw science fiction writers delve into the future of cloned societies, and governments drafted legislation to ward off ethically questionable developments. But what has happened since — and are we on the cusp of resuscitating a long-extinct species, Jurassic Park style?

When Dolly developed lung disease and had to be put down at age 6 — around 40 in human years — cloning fever cooled, along with dreams of human replicas. Fears surfaced that clones could not live as long as their originals due to underlying genetic abnormalities. Seventy countries subsequently banned human cloning, citing medical and ethical challenges, not to mention dystopian fears. There also proved to be zero commercial interest in human clones.

Even if it were possible to clone deceased loved ones, why would we?

So will it ever be possible for the uber-rich to clone themselves for spare body parts, like on The Island? Or for parents who lost children in tragic accidents to have replacements? Four years ago, Nobel Prize-winning British developmental biologist Sir John Gurdon said it was conceivable, but I’m not convinced. In the very distant future, where we have solved the ethical challenges (or completely ignored them), even if it were possible to clone deceased loved ones, why would we? After all, it would take the same years for the clones to grow up as for regular human beings. Getting a clone right away who’s the same age as you exists only in science fiction.

Either way, one thing is clear: Dolly’s legacy lives on. Last year, scientists proved that the early concerns about clones’ premature aging were wrong. Researchers reported that 13 cloned sheep, including four genomic copies of Dolly, are still in good shape at between 7 and 9 years old, the equivalent of 60 to 70 in human years. And while the first hype around Dolly led to fears about human reproductive cloning, the mainstream scientific community is currently focused more on cloning for therapeutic purposes.

There is a huge difference between the two. Reproductive cloning involves creating a genetically identical being, like Dolly or, hypothetically, a deceased relative, through somatic cell nuclear transfer. But in the case of therapeutic cloning, doctors would take a cell from a patient, put its nucleus into an enucleated egg and get the cell to begin dividing and multiplying in a lab dish, eventually producing specialized cells like neurons and pancreatic beta cells. This would enable researchers to study how these cells behave. But creating human cells through this method is incredibly difficult.

Three years ago, Dieter Egli and his research group at the New York Stem Cell Foundation used a variation on the Dolly recipe to create the first disease-specific cell lines from a patient suffering from Type 1 diabetes. The donor’s DNA plus a DNA-free egg produced a line of cells Egli is using to grow insulin-producing beta cells that match the donor precisely, minimizing chances of rejection. And this is where Dolly deserves the most credit: Thanks to her, scientists have been able to start focusing on reprogramming adult cells and trying to turn them into functioning cells, like diabetes-curing beta cells. They’re not quite there yet, but promising progress is being made.

I believe this is one of the most probable future medical uses of cloning. People with heart disease, Alzheimer’s and diabetes can soon expect a medical breakthrough involving cloned stem cells, from which new and healthy tissues could be grown. Nevertheless, cloning will also be used as a molecular biology method more and more in biotechnology and for developing new pharmaceuticals. As an example, it is possible to grow cells from a cow that produces large amounts of milk and insert a gene into the DNA of these cells that codes for a drug or even a vaccine. Transferring the nucleus from one of these cells to a cow egg could result in a cow that produces the drug in its milk.

Also, hope remains when it comes to animal cloning. Dolly not only had a significant impact on medicine, but she provided hope for endangered species, too. In 2001, scientists cloned a gaur, aka Indian bison, and in 2003, a clone species of wild ox was born. Although both died within days, efforts for successfully cloning threatened species, like giant pandas, are still under way.

While I do not believe that long-extinct species will see revivals, or that clones will (or should) walk among us, I do believe that cloning — much like the revolutionary gene-editing method called CRISPR — has the potential to positively affect the future of humanity.
