An attempt by Nigeria’s president to reassure his countrymen that he is alive, and wasn’t replaced by an impostor during a long medical leave, failed to convince everyone because that’s exactly what a clone would say, isn’t it?

Rumors of a double or a clone ruling the country instead of President Muhammadu Buhari have plagued the minds of Nigerians for roughly a year ever since the 75-year-old returned from his medical treatments in the UK, looking all reborn.

When publicly confronted and asked if he was an impostor by a member of the Nigerian community in Poland, Buhari finally addressed the rumors, slamming them as irresponsible, but reassuring the audience he was the real deal.

It’s the real me, l assure you.

Yet such a direct but seemingly prepared answer managed to convince just a few of his Twitter followers, who noted that only a genuine impostor would answer that question this way.

Conspiracy theories about the president sprouted like mushrooms after Buhari took a number of trips to the UK last year to seek medical treatment for an undisclosed malady. While the presidency repeatedly rejected rumors that the head of state was terminally ill or dead, failure to disclose his illness prompted rumors that the president could have been cloned. Another rumor suggests that the top seat is currently occupied by an impostor, namely an imaginative Jibril Aminu of Sudan.

For this iPhone clone maker, it’s all about survival https://briefnews.eu/for-this-iphone-clone-maker-its-all-about-survival/ https://briefnews.eu/for-this-iphone-clone-maker-its-all-about-survival/#respond Sat, 03 Mar 2018 19:10:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/for-this-iphone-clone-maker-its-all-about-survival/

A Chinese company called Leagoo made headlines at MWC for showing off its S9, a cheap Android phone that looks like an iPhone X and swiped Samsung’s flagship name. These kinds of clones have been a part of the industry forever, clogging up eBay and disappointing whoever buys them. The S9 is indeed the latest in a long line of clones, but as I discovered, the forces that brought it to market are more interesting than the facsimile itself.

After all, it seems odd that a company with the resources to build a portfolio of products and lock down a sponsorship deal with Tottenham Hotspur FC would resort to blatant copying. And these copies aren’t much to write home about either. The S9s at Leagoo’s booth ran a very buggy version of Android, and the hardware felt chintzy and insubstantial. Those software issues should get worked out before launch, but honestly, this is exactly the kind of cut-rate experience you’d expect from a $ 150 iPhone clone. That said, the bits of the iPhone X Leagoo attempted to copy at least look correct.

The notch is roughly the right size, and the 13+2MP dual camera around back looks more or less spot-on, even if it doesn’t take particularly great pictures. The Leagoo S9 I played with seemed far from finished, but even at its best, it seems unlikely to thrill.

Chris Velazco/Engadget

And the iPhone isn’t the only flagship Leagoo has attempted to ape, either. Off to the side of Leagoo’s booth at MWC was a plasticky phone with a dual camera and stripes etched horizontally high on its back. That was the company aiming at a domestic rival: Huawei’s high-powered Mate 10 Pro. In fairness, Leagoo designs and produces original smartphones as well — quite a few, in fact.

After a conversation with Leagoo Senior Vice President Zhijie Xie, things became more clear. For Leagoo, cranking out the occasional clone phone isn’t just a way for the company to capitalize on new trends in the industry. It’s about survival.

“For right now, the situation for the mobile phone business,” Xie said, his voice trailing off a little. “Especially [when you’re] like us — you just have to stay alive.”

The S9 then is pure marketing given physical form, a device meant to drive buzz in hopes of boosting the business as a whole. If this sounds familiar, well, it should: that’s the idea being the new Nokia’s string of retro phone releases.

“This one just makes some noise,” conceded Xie while gesturing to the S9.

The weariness in his voice was apparent, and he’s earned it. Leagoo is still a small company, with only a few hundred employees and two factories: one in Shenzhen and one in Sichuan province. And given the sort of global competition small companies like Leagoo face, carving out a space in the market is no easy feat. On a large scale, Apple and Samsung tend to dominate both smartphone conversations and market share to the point where even highly capable competitors are struggling to make an impact.

“Even for LG and Sony sales are going down every year,” Xie said. “We just [have to] stay alive and try to find some core-selling products.” Leagoo’s search for those core products has been a tricky one so far. Xie pointed out that the company’s M-series smartphones were doing well, but a recent release fizzled out because of performance issues related to its Spreadtrum chipset. These kinds of issues seem even more painful when you consider Leagoo’s limited reach. Despite its firmly Chinese origins, Leagoo doesn’t sell phones there at all. All of the companies efforts are concentrated in southeast Asia and eastern Europe, partially because standing up to China’s internal competition can be nearly impossible for upstarts.

“We never did China,” Xie added. “The competition is too strong. Huawei, Xiaomi, Meizu, they’re all there.” And beyond just being there, those companies have much more experience cutting deals with Chinese carriers and retailers, leading to a situation where smaller can be boxed out of their own home.

“At the beginning, we created this company and decided to only focus on overseas markets,” said Xie. “In China, you sometimes need relationships; we do not have the background, and so we chose fair markets. If you work hard, if your products are good, you can sell.”

I’ll admit to being surprised after playing with a few other Leagoo smartphones at the booth. They were perfectly passable devices. The low price tags involved meant they couldn’t stack up to many of the devices I regularly test, but the phones themselves seem sound. When it isn’t churning out clones, Leagoo seems to do decent work. Whether that’s enough to help Leagoo find its place in the world is a different story.

Scientists clone monkeys for the first time https://briefnews.eu/scientists-clone-monkeys-for-the-first-time/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-clone-monkeys-for-the-first-time/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 22:00:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-clone-monkeys-for-the-first-time/

Ever since cloning produced Dolly the sheep, scientists have copied a slew of mammals ranging from dogs to ponies. Primates, however, have been elusive — until now. Chinese researchers have successfully cloned a macaque monkey fetus twice, producing sister monkeys Hua Hua and Zhong Zhong using the same basic method used to create Dolly. The team removed the nucleus from monkey eggs and replaced it with DNA from the fetus, implanting the resulting eggs in female monkeys for them to give birth.

The process wasn’t easy. It took 127 eggs and 79 embryos to get these results, and it still required a fetus to work (Dolly was cloned from an adult). Still, it reflects progress in cloning science. The team managed the feat by injecting both a form of mRNA and an inhibitor, the combination of which improved the development of blastocysts (the structures that form the embryo) and the pregnancy rate for transplanted embryos.

Both baby macaques are healthy, the researchers said, and genetic tests confirm they really are duplicates. There could be success with cloning based on adults, too, as the team is still waiting on results from multiple pregnancies.

In theory, this makes human cloning more realistic given the genetic similarities between monkeys and our own species. However, that’s unlikely to happen any time soon, if at all. There are numerous ethical objections, and not just because it would involve creating exact copies of people. Whether or not you mind cloning based on fetuses, the process currently requires many failures to get to the intended results. There’s also the question of what happens with those clones that do survive into adulthood — they may face pressure to live up to the original.

As such, monkey cloning may be limited to medical research, where having more than one monkey with the same genes could help scientists compare the results of treatments or test under specific conditions. That still won’t please everyone, but it’ll at least represent an ethical line in the sand that science is unwilling to cross.

Clive Owen Joins Will Smith in Ang Lee’s Clone Thriller ‘Gemini Man’ https://briefnews.eu/clive-owen-joins-will-smith-in-ang-lees-clone-thriller-gemini-man/ https://briefnews.eu/clive-owen-joins-will-smith-in-ang-lees-clone-thriller-gemini-man/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 15:56:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/clive-owen-joins-will-smith-in-ang-lees-clone-thriller-gemini-man/ gemini man casting

Clive Owen will be facing off against Will Smith in the new Ang Lee sci-fi thriller, Gemini Man. The sci-fi thriller follows an older assassin (Smith) who becomes marked for death by another mysterious killer, who he discovers is a cloned version of his younger self.

Owen is in talks to play the head of the cloning program, according to The Hollywood Reporter, presumably one of the antagonists that Smith’s character will have to defeat in the fight for his life.

The Ang Lee movie follows Smith in dual roles, as Henry, an aging assassin trying to get out of the business, and as his clone, who is 25 years younger. Tatiana Maslany, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Elizabeth Debicki are all circling the role of the female lead, an operative named Danny who is given the task of surveilling Henry, only to team up with him against the company they both work for.

It’ll be another sci-fi collaboration for Owen, who is perhaps best known for his role in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi masterpiece Children of Men, though his casting as a corporate villain probably won’t give the British actor much to do beyond ham it up a little (fingers crossed this is not the case).

The story is not unfamiliar — Rian Johnson directed the narratively similar Looper in 2012 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt famously caking on facial prosthetics to play a younger Bruce Willis. But with de-aging technology becoming more prevalent, being utilized in everything from superhero movies to upcoming Martin Scorsese mob films, Gemini Man actually sounds possible in its intended form. It might make it easier to stomach yet another decades-younger female lead (Maslany, Winstead and Debicki are in their early 30s or late 20s) being paired with the 49-year-old Smith. We all know what a young, charismatic Will Smith looks like and it would sure be welcome to see him again, even as a villain.

Gemini Man has long been in development, first pitched to Walt Disney Pictures in 1997 by Darren Lemki, but it was put on the backburner when the VFX needed for the movie weren’t up to par. The script has gone through several writers, including Brian Helgeland and Andrew Niccol, and Top Gun director Tony Scott was attached to helm the movie at one point. Now, the movie is finally making its way to the big screen, with Ang Lee directing a script by Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff. Paramount is eyeing a February production start with locations ranging from Savannah, Georgia to Budapest, Hungary.

Gemini Man is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4, 2019.

A hedge fund started by a pioneering female investor has lost more than half its assets in two years – CLONE https://briefnews.eu/a-hedge-fund-started-by-a-pioneering-female-investor-has-lost-more-than-half-its-assets-in-two-years-clone/ https://briefnews.eu/a-hedge-fund-started-by-a-pioneering-female-investor-has-lost-more-than-half-its-assets-in-two-years-clone/#respond Sun, 15 Oct 2017 03:11:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-hedge-fund-started-by-a-pioneering-female-investor-has-lost-more-than-half-its-assets-in-two-years-clone/ New YorkTTstudio/Shutterstock

  • Jamie Zimmerman is one of the few, and first, female investors to run a hedge fund. She started Litespeed Partners in 2000.
  • The fund has had a tough run of late, and now manages less than half of what it did two years ago.
  • Hedge funds running similar investment strategies have also struggled. Some have shut.

NEW YORK – A hedge fund started by a pioneering female investor has posted slight gains this year after suffering a steep drop in assets.

Jamie Zimmerman’s Litespeed Partners now manages about $ 725 million, less than half of what the fund managed in October 2015 when it had around $ 1.9 billion, according to a person familiar with the figures who requested anonymity because the information is private. The fund managed about $ 3.24 billion at the start of 2015, according to a Reuters report from the time.

Litespeed, which makes bets on distressed companies and company events such as mergers and acquisitions, is not alone. Last year, investors pulled $ 38 billion from event-driven funds – those that bet on company activity – and investors have yet to re-up, according to data from Hedge Fund Research.

Bigger hedge funds have also recently shut, notably Perry Capital and Eton Park, as have smaller peers, such as Chesapeake Partners.

Litespeed’s performance has been in line with competitors this year, meanwhile. The fund gained about 5.9% after fees through September this year, according to the person familiar. So-called event-driven funds also gained 5.9% over the same period, per data tracker HFR.

Litespeed gained +1.9% last year, and dropped –11.5% in 2015 and -5.31% in 2014, according to people familiar with the numbers. That’s compared to event-driven peers, which posted +10.5% last year, -3.5% in 2015 and +1.08% in 2014, per HFR.

Zimmerman, who opened Litespeed in 2000 with $ 4 million, is one of the few women to run a hedge fund business. Meanwhile, across the industry, only 3% of senior investment roles were held by women in 2012, according to trade publication CIO.

Zimmerman graduated from Amherst College in 1981 and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Michigan. She started her career as an attorney focusing on bankruptcy, where she learned to analyze to dissect the US bankruptcy code and creditors before switching into finance, according to a 2005 profile in the Wall Street Journal.

She told the paper that her gender had not hampered her career.

“It’s irrelevant,” she said at the time. “It just wasn’t a factor in anything I did in my life.”

By and large, few women hedge fund managers exist. Reasons include a lack of recruitment efforts from disproportionately male execs to broken pipelines and networking opportunities.

Blatant clone or marketing hoax? The curious case of Tokyo 41 and Tokyo 42 https://briefnews.eu/blatant-clone-or-marketing-hoax-the-curious-case-of-tokyo-41-and-tokyo-42/ https://briefnews.eu/blatant-clone-or-marketing-hoax-the-curious-case-of-tokyo-41-and-tokyo-42/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 07:00:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blatant-clone-or-marketing-hoax-the-curious-case-of-tokyo-41-and-tokyo-42/

Alleged footage from an emulated version of Tokyo 41.

The game industry isn’t a stranger to accusations that a new game is just a lightly reskinned clone of another title. But there’s that, and then there’s the “cloning” debate surrounding Tokyo 42 and its alleged inspiration, a 30-year-old ZX Spectrum and PC game called Tokyo 41.

As manufactured controversies go, this one leaves a lot to be skeptical of. As clever marketing plans go, though, it’s an interesting public performance that touches on some real issues in modern gaming.

The first mention of a game called Tokyo 41 anywhere on the Internet seems to have come from a Twitter account belonging to alleged developer Mark Followill. On the same day the account was created, Followill replied to Tokyo 42 publisher Mode 7 Games with a couple of CGA-style screenshots of Tokyo 41. Those shots heavily resemble Tokyo 42‘s isometric shooter gameplay despite Tokyo 41 allegedly being originally published in 1987. “It is clear that this game is strongly similar to my game Tokyo 41 which you are clearly aware of,” Followill tweeted.

Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany Looks Back at Her Clone Journey, Talks Bloody Goodbye and 'Really Different' Finale https://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 16:56:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/ Orphan Black‘s chameleon-like star Tatiana Maslany had such a difficult time parting with the many clones she has played on the BBC America series that she, literally, got a nosebleed while saying goodbye to one of them.

The bloody moment, which came during her final scene as suburban mom Alison, “was so telling in terms of how little I wanted to let go of that character,” Maslany tells TVLine in the following Q&A. (We’ll miss Alison a lot, too.)

Below, Maslany reflects on her 230+ clone appearances over the past five seasons, and previews the “very different” series finale (airing this Saturday at 10/9c), which takes the show “back to a human level.”

TVLINE | There’s a chart on the show’s Wikipedia page that tallies the number of appearances for each actor per season. And thanks to your many characters, your total is 231 appearances over five seasons. Just to put that into perspective, Ari Millen comes in second at 50 appearances.
Oh my God. That’s awesome.

Orphan Black Wiki

Source: Wikipedia

TVLINE | What goes through your head when you hear that number?
I mean, it doesn’t feel unreasonable. [Laughs] ‘Cause I definitely was on set every, kind of, second of the day. So that feels about right. I think I did ten thousand lines of ADR… Nobody should be talking that much. [Laughs]

TVLINE |The very first interview you and I did was before the show premiered, but I think you had filmed all of Season 1. You talked about what a joy it was to play all these characters, but also how exhausting it was. Did it get any easier for you over the years?
Not entirely. I think I was just sort of in shock that first season. I’d never led a TV series, let alone played this many characters, so it was a new thing for me. I think I got used to the amount of work it was, but it’s only now that I’ve got some time off [from] it that I’m like, “Oh, right, this is what sleep feels like. And this is what not, like, constantly having 90 voices in your head feels like.” It’s been a bizarre process of letting go of that amount of work a little bit.

Orphan Black RachelTVLINE | I remember you saying that Rachel was a particularly scary clone for you because you’d never really done that type of character or accent before. By the end, did you feel comfortable in her skin?
I always felt a little bit uncomfortable in Rachel’s skin, but I also just loved her to bits because of that. She definitely wasn’t a natural choice for me, or kind of conventional casting. She really gave me this chance to stretch as an actor and try something different. So I loved Rachel, and I’m so glad we got to keep exploring her.

TVLINE | Looking back at the five seasons, is there a scene that stands out for you as being particularly difficult or rewarding?
There’s some stuff that happens at the end of Season 5. But there have been so many. I mean, I can’t even remember half the things we’ve done on the show. The last episode of Season 5 is full of scenes that were technically complex, emotionally complex. That was a really memorable episode for me.

TVLINE | Speaking of the last episode, how would you sum up the series finale for those who haven’t seen it yet?
I’m interested to see what people think about it. We really wanted to finish it in Orphan Black style, and also kind of surprise the audience. So hopefully, they get some of that. We’ve had some major things happen this season that have broken the hearts of the clones and altered them forever. So we see some of the consequences of that. It’s a really different episode for us, as well.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | There were some individual clone-centric installments this season, and the finale’s a big one for Sarah. How would you describe her mindset in the episode?
Helena’s in labor, and it’s Sarah in action: Sarah flying forward, trying her best, the way that Sarah always has, just with her own resourceful mind and with this team of people that she has around her, trying to fight for freedom. So that is certainly where we start that episode. But it’s this kind of blind crashing into whatever’s coming at them.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | The last episode ended with Helena going into labor. What can you say about her journey in this final hour?
I loved the episode [last week] that was Helena-centric, in terms of seeing a little bit of her backstory that we sort of knew, but also fleshing out this self-hatred she has with herself in the present day, in terms of what she did to her sisters and all of that. At the beginning of this episode, obviously, she’s in labor and in distress. But she’s also firmly holding onto her sister, [whom] she fought so hard to be with over these last few seasons. They’ve had a very difficult relationship in that they’ve both tried to kill each other. [Laughs] But their love is so strong.

TVLINE | You’re so close to these characters, and you’re a producer on the show. How much influence did you have on where their journeys ended? Were there certain things you wanted to see for the seestras?
There are certain things that I wanted, and other things that I wasn’t expecting and loved the surprise of them. I think for all of us, it was about coming back to the microcosm of this family, this chosen family that they’ve all created, and these links that they have, that sense of community. So that was really what our focus was: taking it out of this large-scale corruption of these larger corporations, and bringing it back to a human level.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | I have a very difficult question for you: Which clone will you miss playing the most?
I think I’ll miss Helena the most, but then Alison as well. Like, my body had a really visceral reaction to saying goodbye to Alison. I was doing a scene that happens in Episode 9, where I’m Skyping with Cosima, talking about Siobhan’s funeral and her death. It was the last scene that I shot as Alison. So I was already so upset, doing this scene, and then also just saying goodbye, and my nose just started bleeding profusely. It was a mess, a disaster. So I was just, like, covered in blood, and that was my last moment as Alison. [Laughs] Which was so telling in terms of how little I wanted to let go of that character.

Orphan Black Dinner SceneTVLINE | Getting to portray so many distinctive women in one project is such a rare gift. What are you going to take away from this experience going forward?
I guess just a sense of play. There was so much creativity in this project for me and for, I think, all of us. And just continuing to explore that way and be open to the infinite possibilities of what any person could be or what any actor can play. I just feel very open and excited to tackle something new. Not sure what that’s going to be.

TVLINE | After taking on such a monumental task, could you see yourself signing up to do another TV series and committing to another five or six seasons of something?
Yeah, I think so. Maybe not like immediately, but definitely down the line at some point. But I also want to do theater and go back to the rehearsal hall a little bit.

“A big priority in approaching the [series] finale was just to [shoot] as many clone scenes as possible,” executive producer John Fawcett tells TVLine.

But will the sestras’ shared screentime include any new doppelgänger additions? “We really wanted to focus on [the clones] we had, but I wouldn’t close the window on that,” EP Graeme Manson hedges. However, in putting the spotlight on Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Helena & Co., the producers were able to achieve something they’ve haven’t done before on the show.

“Part of what we did this year is some Leda sister-focused, individual character episodes, and within those episodes, we’re doing some flashbacks,” Manson shares, adding that the storytelling device allows for some familiar players to make a return. “We’re opening up things you don’t know about the characters.”

For even more scoop, read on as the Orphan Black cast previews Felix’s journey, Cosima’s tortured romance with Delphine and other Season 5 arcs.

THE BROTHER SESTRA |Jordan Gavaris describes the show’s swan song as full of “panic,” “pandemonium” and “crisis” — and Felix is there for all of it. Unlike last year, when the character was somewhat separated from Sarah by the discovery of his biological sis Adele, “he’s with the sisters this season,” Gavaris reassures TVLine. “He’s not about to run off and have his own adventure. He’s with the sisters because this is it. This is their chance.”

Orphan Black SpoilersTHE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY TRIO |“Donnie has some skeletons in the closet, and he’s going to have to deal with them,” Kristian Bruun teases. But first, the premiere finds the Hendrixes and Helena in the woods, where “things will go down… a lot quicker than people expect,” Bruun previews. “We are hot property. People want us. So they track us down pretty quickly, and then everything goes nuts from there.”

THE MAMA BEAR | “One of the biggest things” happening for Mrs. S during the final run is “a deepening of her relationship with Sarah,” Maria Doyle Kennedy shares. And having lost her mother last season, S is embracing an added sense of responsibility. “You truly have to take on the mantel of an elder in that situation,” the actress explains. “The buck stops with you. You really have to just own it… Mrs. S has to step up to that. It’s very powerful stuff.”

Orphan Black SpoilersTHE LOVE BIRDS | Despite being reunited, Cosima and Delphine’s romance will not get any easier. “The love element has always been there, but there’s so many forces against them,” Evelyne Brochu notes. “There are trust issues. There’s a beautiful line that I tell Cosima: ‘This is our relationship. We can either end it or accept it as it is.’ So we’ll see what Cosima answers.”

New images from the set of the untitled Han Solo movie continue to rock the heck out of a ’70s aesthetic that should make original trilogy fans excited. The blue speeder he is seen sitting in thanks to these Daily Mail pictures (via StarWarsNewsNet) better be fast, because he’s driving it on an Imperial base, with Imperial speeders, and what looks like some kind of new hovertank chasing after him.

StarWarsNewsNet also had a fan who was visiting Fuerteventura, where they’re shooting the film, write in with a description of what he witnessed in the Canary Islands. The set featured what looked like a palace, similar to Jabba’s in the original trilogy, a couple run down tanks, and a large shield generator.

While Finn might not have been the “big deal” in the Resistance that he claimed during Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he actually will be in The Last Jedi. John Boyega told EW that he’s a big deal now, but mostly for being the guy who got struck down by Kylo Ren (and surviving). He’ll be wandering the Resistance halls saying things like:

“Yeah, I was there. Then the Falcon picked me up… Oh yeah, I knew Han Solo by the way. We were pretty close.”

Since Rey’s got the lightsaber, Finn needed a new weapon, and John Boyega showed it off on instagram in a boomerang, complete with some nice pew-pew visuals!

Having seen John Williams conduct live at Star Wars Celebration, I get it – you want that experience as often as humanly possible, even if you’re a couple of the stars of the movie he’s currently scoring. Indeed, Mark Hamill, our Luke Skywalker, joined director Rian Johnson and newcomer Laura Dern for a scoring session, and now I’m jealous of them both.

Ang Lee May Direct Long-Awaited Clone Thriller ‘Gemini Man’ https://briefnews.eu/ang-lee-may-direct-long-awaited-clone-thriller-gemini-man/ https://briefnews.eu/ang-lee-may-direct-long-awaited-clone-thriller-gemini-man/#respond Mon, 24 Apr 2017 18:48:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ang-lee-may-direct-long-awaited-clone-thriller-gemini-man/ ang lee gemini man

Ang Lee has become quite fixated on technology advances in film, with his latest films like Life of Pi and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk experimenting with everything from 3D filming to high frame rates.

Despite the meager reception to the experimental Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, it looks like Lee won’t be shying away from boundary-pushing high-tech storytelling, as he’s reportedly eyeing the director’s chair for Gemini Man, a spy thriller about an aging assassin who is hunted by a younger clone of himself. Gemini Man has been gestating in development hell for nearly 20 years — until now. Could that have something to do with the de-aging tech we’ve seen blossom over the past few years?

Lee may direct Gemini Man for Skydance Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The original script, by Goosebumps writer Darren Lemke was intriguing — an aging assassin tries to retire, only to be hunted by a younger, more physically fit clone of himself — and attracted the attention of Hollywood bigwigs like Mel Gibson, directors like Tony Scott, Curtis Hanson and Joe Carnahan, and A-list writers like Andrew Niccol and Game Of Thrones showrunner David Benioff.

Carnahan, under producer Jerry Bruckheimer, even cut together a sizzle reel for his pitch a couple years ago, with the hopes that Clint Eastwood would play the lead role.

However, nerves over the required technology put a stop to conversations about the film. Rian Johnson’s Looper, which boasted a similar premise but cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a younger version of Bruce Willis transformed via facial prosthetics, may have also hindered the development of Gemini Man.

De-aging technology has started to be used more often in blockbusters like Marvel’s Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, where Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr. were digitally transformed into their younger selves. It was used to recreate Carrie Fisher’s early cameo appearance in Rogue One and, most notably, was the centerpiece of David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

So the technology is there, and Ang Lee may be spearheading the most prominent use of it yet with Gemini Man. While Gemini Man would be more mainstream than much of his recent work, its potential for technological tinkering is surely what caught Lee’s eye.

There’s no firm timeline on the project as of yet, but with Lee turning down the Mulan remake, and struggling to get financing on his Ali/Frazier movie, this could well be his next project.

As for the star of the movie,  there has been an increasing fascination with de-aging and bringing back established action stars — just look at Harrison Ford’s return to his multiple famous franchises. Who do you think could be a contender?
