There will soon be a big blockbuster battle for Christmas audiences. Mary Poppins Returns will get a bit of a head start on December 19, but two days later, Bumblebee and Aquaman will go head-to-head, hoping to pull in all the families home for the holidays.

In an effort to convince audiences to head to theaters on December 21, new Aquaman and Bumblebee clips have surfaced online. The Aquaman clip features Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) battling monsters from the Mariana Trench while the Bumblebee clip has Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) and her friend Memo (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.) inadvertently running from the police as their Autobot buddy decides to make a run for it with the two of them inside.

Aquaman Clip

The Aquaman clip is pretty gnarly, and it has director James Wan’s horror sensibilities all around it. The monsters look like a gangly version of Venom, but with a bunch of sharp spikes and fins attached to their limbs and back. There’s not much battling to be done here except Arthur knocking one of these creatures into the ocean, and it seems like there are just too many of them to be dealt with. Why these creatures didn’t show up in James Cameron’s documentary about the Mariana Trench is beyond me.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

Aquaman has early screenings this weekend for Amazon Prime members, but otherwise arrives on December 21.

Bumblebee Clip

Next up, a Bumblebee clip shows off some cool Transformers action as the titular Autobot tries to evade a pursuing police officer through a tunnel (the same tunnel from movies like Back to the Future Part II and Who Framed Roger Rabbit). We get to see Bumblebee do some clever maneuvering and shapeshifting in the chase, including hopping around the tunnel itself, all while keeping Charlie and Memo safe and concealed. Though it’s not quite as cool as this Bumblebee transformation.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen.

Bumblebee opens on December 21, 2018.

Until now, Google’s Clips camera has only been usable by one person. That’s something of a problem for families — what if your partner wants the AI-guided cam to capture a special moment when you’re away? Google is about to fix that. It’s rolling out an update this week that introduces family pairing, letting you pass the cam to another member of the household to view and share your creations.

Google is also improving the AI itself — you know, the reason you bought Clips in the first place. It’s now better at detecting dancing, hugs, jumps and kisses, so you’ll have a better chance of capturing a priceless occasion without having to manually record it. The company accomplished the feat by giving the AI “bonuses” to its training quality score for recognizing these scenes. This might not convince you to buy a Clips cam if you didn’t already have one, but it could easily help justify your purchase.

These ‘A Quiet Place’ Clips and TV Spots Will Give You the Creeps https://briefnews.eu/these-a-quiet-place-clips-and-tv-spots-will-give-you-the-creeps/ https://briefnews.eu/these-a-quiet-place-clips-and-tv-spots-will-give-you-the-creeps/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 14:54:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/these-a-quiet-place-clips-and-tv-spots-will-give-you-the-creeps/ A Quiet Place clips

A whole slew of A Quiet Place clips and TV spots have arrived to give you the creeps. John Krasinski‘s horror film has already earned rave reviews out of SXSW, and from the intensity on display in these clips, it’s easy to see why. Watch the Quiet Place clips below.

I never thought I’d be excited to see a horror movie directed by Jim from The Office, and yet here we are. Life is strange! In A Quiet Place, “a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.” The clips below are loaded with tension, and thankfully don’t give too much away.

A Quiet Place Clip: Bathtub

In this clip, Emily Blunt enjoys a relaxing bath with a nice glass of wine. She lets the bubbles wash away the day, and unwinds while listening to some smooth jazz. Just kidding. She’s actually hiding in the tub while some unseen monster lurks just out of frame, all while Marco Beltrami’s score pounds away.

A Quiet Place Clip: Bridge

In this clip, Krasinski and Blunt are carrying their children across a bridge. Everything looks nice and tranquil – until one of the kids sets off a very loud toy. Needless to say, having a noisy toy in a world of monsters attracted to sound is a bad idea. Much running follows.

A Quiet Place Clip: Silo

This super-quick clip features Millicent Simmonds coming face-to-face with…something. Beware of jump scares.

A Quiet Place TV Spot

Now that the clips are out of the way, here’s a Quiet Place TV spot, featuring Scary Trailer Voice Guy and lots of pull-quotes, including one from /Film.

A Quiet Place TV Spot 2

Here’s one more TV spot. In this one, Scary Trailer Voice Guy says, “On April 6, stop talking.” Good advice!

Reviewing the film at SXSW for /Film, Meredith Borders wrote that A Quiet Place is a “majorly effective monster movie,” and added:

A Quiet Place is, above all else, really scary. Krasinki plays with tension in relentless waves, these cycles of fear and release, fear and release. So many of these recent contained horror films are all build-up and no pay-off, and A Quiet Place pays off again and again, with remarkable set pieces and long, unflinching looks at these arachnid beasts, their leathery, complicated physiques, endless caverns of teeth and giant, ghastly ears. The score is plaintive and mostly sparing, until the moments that our heroes are face to face with these horrifying creatures, and then it’s almost louder than we can stand.

A Quiet Place opens on April 6, 2018.

‘Tomb Raider’ Clips: Lara Croft Has Meetings, Solves Puzzles, Fights Walton Goggins, Raids Zero Tombs https://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-clips-lara-croft-has-meetings-solves-puzzles-fights-walton-goggins-raids-zero-tombs/ https://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-clips-lara-croft-has-meetings-solves-puzzles-fights-walton-goggins-raids-zero-tombs/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 10:35:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-clips-lara-croft-has-meetings-solves-puzzles-fights-walton-goggins-raids-zero-tombs/ Tomb Raider Clips

Hey, a new Tomb Raider movie is a thing that’s happening this week. Alicia Vikander (Jason Bourne, Ex Machina) stars as Lara Croft, the main character from the long-running video game franchise that follows an explorer who always seems to get caught up in danger and intrigue among historical artifacts and ruins.

Four new Tomb Raider clips have surfaced online in a last ditch effort to get audiences interested in seeing the movie, which hits theaters this weekend. Unfortunately, they’re all incredibly boring and don’t do anything to pique interest in this latest video game adaptation at all. But maybe that’s just me. See for yourself below.

Watch the Tomb Raider Clips

Here’s a tender moment between Lara Croft and her mother, played by Kristin Scott Thomas. It seems Lara Croft holds a grudge against her father, though it’s not clear for what. Her anger and bitterness is keeping her from signing the papers for what appears to be her inheritance. But if she doesn’t accept what she’s been given, then it will be destroyed, including her childhood home. Bummer.

Apparently having a change of heart, Lara Croft is signing the papers that will give her exactly what her father has left behind for her. One of those things is a Japanese puzzle box known as a karakuri. Of course, she solves it quickly (though it doesn’t look all that difficult), and inside is both a memento and the key to an adventure she will embark upon.

Here, Lara Croft is solving a puzzle that will provide access to a tomb that Walton Goggins desperately wants to enter. Goggins plays Mathias Vogel, who has some kind of link to Lara’s father, though it doesn’t sound like it was a solid friendship. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Vogel was somehow responsible for the death of Lara’s father.

Honestly, is this the best Tomb Raider can do? This scene feels so dreadfully bland, and the score is desperately trying to make Vikander spinning some stone wheels exciting somehow. It just feels like a complete waste.

Here’s easily the most exciting scene from this round of clips. Walton Goggins and Alicia Vikander square off, and they do it on a ladder that acts as a bridge between two cliffs. That feels more than a little contrived and silly, but at least it’s something, I guess? Hopefully the film has more to offer than just poor imitations of Indiana Jones scenes.

The video game adaptation is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons.

Tomb Raider hits theaters on March 16, 2018. Here’s the official synopsis:

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her Dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who – against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit – must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Today, Google began selling Clips, a smart camera that was announced in October of 2017. The camera can be purchased from Google’s online store—as well as numerous online retailers—for $ 249.

Clips is an AI-powered camera that can automatically take pictures when it observes things it deems interesting within its 130-degree field of vision. It runs algorithms to detect people, smiles, and other triggers, and Clips learns over time what you consider most interesting. For example, when your child smiles within its view, Clips might automatically snap an image—or rather, multiple images.

The camera captures a series of images at a rate up to 15 per second and turns them into something that reads a bit like an animated GIF. You can extract individual frames from those images if you prefer still photos. You can also use your camera to take pictures manually, and you can either place your camera in a static location or wear it like a Go Pro.

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Clips and Featurette: Meet Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Whatsit https://briefnews.eu/a-wrinkle-in-time-clips-and-featurette-meet-mrs-who-mrs-which-and-mrs-whatsit/ https://briefnews.eu/a-wrinkle-in-time-clips-and-featurette-meet-mrs-who-mrs-which-and-mrs-whatsit/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 18:57:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-wrinkle-in-time-clips-and-featurette-meet-mrs-who-mrs-which-and-mrs-whatsit/

Wondering about the who, which, and whatsit of A Wrinkle in Time? Well, the newest clips, TV spots, and featurettes for the upcoming Disney sci-fi film are here to answer your questions. Kind of.

Specifically, your questions about Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Whatsit, the celestial beings played by Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey, and Reese Witherspoon, respectively. While the marketing for the film has been focused on Storm Reid‘s Meg Murry, we can now gain a better idea of who these glamorous, inhuman beings are.

A Wrinkle in Time Clip

Reese Witherspoon lends a playful, eccentric air to her Mrs. Whatsit, who cryptically refuses to answer any of Meg or Mrs. Murry’s (Gugu M’Batha Raw) questions about why this beautifully-dressed stranger has just walked into their home. The brief scene doesn’t give you much information — except that Meg’s little brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) is a genius — but it is a tantalizing introduction to the celestial beings who will guide Meg on her journey to find her missing scientist father (Chris Pine).

It’s a great day for these characters, who get a featurette spotlighting their ethereal costumes and hair design. Because it takes a lot of work to make a celestial being.

The glamorous costumes and elaborate hairstyles all have a purpose. Whether it’s the flowing florals of the young Mrs. Whatsit, the Eastern-inspired fabrics of Mrs. Who, and the structured metallics of Mrs. Which, everything acts as a reflection of each of their personalities.

In the featurette, director Ava Duvernay gives gushing praise to costume designer Paco Delgado as well as head hair stylist Kim Kimble and make-up designer LaLette Littlejohn.

It all comes together in the latest TV spot for A Wrinkle in Time:

Based off of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel of the same name, A Wrinkle in Time is a highly anticipated fantasy sci-fi that looks to boast dazzling visuals and a rich story about family. Here is the official synopsis:

Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.

A Wrinkle in Time also stars Michael Peña and Zach Galifianakis. The movie hits theaters on March 9, 2018.

‘Red Sparrow’ Clips, Featurettes and TV Spots: Jennifer Lawrence Will Keep You Guessing https://briefnews.eu/red-sparrow-clips-featurettes-and-tv-spots-jennifer-lawrence-will-keep-you-guessing/ https://briefnews.eu/red-sparrow-clips-featurettes-and-tv-spots-jennifer-lawrence-will-keep-you-guessing/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2018 02:41:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/red-sparrow-clips-featurettes-and-tv-spots-jennifer-lawrence-will-keep-you-guessing/ red sparrow clips

Jennifer Lawrence has aced the steely-faced seductive stare. That much we can tell during the barrage of clips, TV spots, and marketing for her upcoming spy thriller Red Sparrow.

The film hits theaters in a matter of weeks, and with early buzz building for the movie, 20th Century Fox is kicking its marketing into high gear. But can the air of mystery around Francis Lawrence’s Cold War-era film be maintained?

A slew of new Red Sparrow clips and TV spots have been released by 20th Century Fox. While the TV spots recycle much of the same footage we’ve seen before — alongside tantalizing text declaring “Red Sparrow will keep you guessing” — the first new clip is an intriguing one. It’s a glimpse of Dominika Egorova’s training to be a Sparrow, and it’s quite distressing. Dominika balks at being ordered to take off her clothes in front of others, but Charlotte Ramping‘s instructor scolds her for her insolence.

Red Sparrow Clips

At the center of all of this is Jennifer Lawrence’s Dominika, who still remains much of a beguiling mystery despite her prominence in each clip, TV spot, and poster. Who is Dominika exactly? What are her intentions? Does she truly mean to become a double agent for the Americans?

Even in the above featurette about Dominika’s character, all those questions remain unanswered.

Here is the official synopsis for Red Sparrow:

Prima ballerina Dominika Egorova faces a bleak and uncertain future after she suffers an injury that ends her career. She soon turns to Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people to use their minds and bodies as weapons. Egorova emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow after completing the sadistic training process. As she comes to terms with her new abilities, Dominika meets a CIA agent who tries to convince her that he is the only person she can trust.

Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker, Joely Richardson, and Jeremy Irons. It’s set to hit theaters on March 2, 2018.

At its Pixel 2 launch event last year, Google also revealed its tiny Clips camera, that uses AI to figure out when it should take a picture or video. Now the $ 249 device has quietly become available for purchase on its website, however as Android Police notes, it could take a while to arrive. Depending on the address used, I saw potential delivery dates between range between February 27th and March 5th.

So should you order one? While most cameras rely on your best guess about when to take a picture, Google Clips has had its AI trained by pro photographers. The 2-inch square has a shutter button 12MP sensor, 130-degree field of view and 16GB of storage to save up to 3 hours of selected video. Chris Velazco was impressed by the results during our hands-on test in October, but we’ll need more time to find out how good it is at sorting through daily life for the highlights, and if we feel secure with its strategy of sending the results to a paired phone.

The X-Files' Darin Morgan Discusses Berenstain Bears and Classic Clips, Names His Biggest Critic: 'Duchovny' https://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-darin-morgan-discusses-berenstain-bears-and-classic-clips-names-his-biggest-critic-duchovny/ https://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-darin-morgan-discusses-berenstain-bears-and-classic-clips-names-his-biggest-critic-duchovny/#respond Thu, 25 Jan 2018 02:37:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-darin-morgan-discusses-berenstain-bears-and-classic-clips-names-his-biggest-critic-duchovny/ Ladies and flukemen, The X-Files‘ Darin Morgan has done it again.

The sci-fi drama scribe/director/producer’s latest alien offering, Wednesday’s “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” episode, takes on the concept of manipulated memories — remember the whole Berenstein/Berenstain Bears parallel universe thing a few years back? — and skewers the existence of a post-truth society, all while managing to slot in some very funny (and wildly altered) clips from the series’ original run.

We couldn’t wait to break down the hour with the Guy man himself, but first, a brief recap:

The X_Files Recap Season 11 Episode 4A mysterious man contacts Mulder and says he’s stumbled on the “conspiracy to end all conspiracies,” hinting that Mulder should look into the Twilight Zone episode “The Lost Martian.” Fox is well acquainted with the sci-fi classic… but when he goes hunting for it later, it’s as though it never existed, which confounds Mulder, because he has clear memories of watching it as a child. The man later appears to Scully and hands her a box of Goop-O A-B-C, a product similar to Jell-O 1-2-3, before running off and yelling “Just prove I’m real!”

Scully is intrigued, telling Mulder that though she has fond memories of making the dessert with her family as a child, she hasn’t been able to find it in decades —everyone she asks about it insists that she’s thinking of Jell-O 1-2-3 instead. That’s when Mulder brings up the Mandela Effect, a phenomenon “when someone has a memory that doesn’t coincide with everyone else’s or the facts.”

The mysterious man, who thinks his name is Reggie (but is really played by Veep‘s Brian Huskey), says he uncovered a similar phenomenon when looking for children’s books he remembered as being written by Dr. Wussle… only when he found them, the author’s name was spelled Dr. Wuzzle. An exasperated Scully says it’s merely a case of “people misremembering stuff!” Mulder thinks it’s evidence of parallel universes. And Reggie is convinced that now that he’s figure out what “they” are up to, he’s being expunged from everyone’s memory.

Oh, and he helped Mulder start the X-Files (or so he claims), an assertion that tees up a very funny remix of several clips featuring series icons Eugene Tooms, Clyde Bruckman and Mrs. Peacock, only with Reggie digitally inserted to look as though he’s investigating alongside the FBI’s Most Unwanted.

There are a lot more turns and twists — including Mulder’s face-to-face meeting with Dr. They, the man Reggie claims invented mass memory manipulation — before Scully figures out that Reggie is really just a mentally unstable government employee who knows so much about them because he’s been listening in via illegal wiretap for years. And just before he’s carted off in a straitjacket, Reggie tells Mulder and Scully that their last case together involved an alien descending to Earth, handing them a book called All the Answers, and then leaving for good: No one in the universe wants to hang out with humans, the creature says, because they lie.

At the end of the hour, Mulder locates his missing episode — turns out, it was “a knockoff show called The Dusky Realm” — and Scully makes the Goop-O 1-2-3 but decides not to eat it. “I want to remember how it was. I want to remember how it all was,” she says, as Mulder nods knowingly.

Read on for Morgan’s take on the episode, which may be his final for the franchise.

TVLINE|The first I had ever heard of the Mandela Effect was in relationship to the Berenstain Bears debacle of a few years ago. Were you aware of it before that?
That was one of the things that I’d heard. In one script, I had a Berenstain Bears line. I had to cut the scene out. Although I don’t know how many people know — well, obviously a lot of people know the Berenstain Bears, but I don’t know if that’s a generational thing? Like, my father wouldn’t know who the Berenstain Bears are. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted it to be Dr. Seuss in the episode. We couldn’t get clearance from Seuss estate, so that’s why I had to change it to Dr. Wuzzle.

The X-Files Recap Season 11 EPisode 4TVLINE|Tell me a bit about shooting Brian Huskey for the footage you inserted into the flashbacks.
Well, I had sent him all the clips we were using. I don’t know if he’d really seen the episodes. I don’t know how big of an X-Files fan he was, if at all. So he at least knew what the seed was, and I would try to explain it if I had to, what was going on. The the tricky part is really more for the camera guys to get the lighting, to match the lighting and the camera angles. That was a bit of a challenge.

TVLINE|How did you pick which moments to revisit? Were there any that you picked that didn’t make the final cut?
Initially but I thought I was going to be using different episodes or scenes, but then when I went back and looked at those things, there was no place to put Reggie. They were all tight close-ups, usually Mulder and Scully. That was all sort of last-minute, that was the last thing I wrote in the script. It was like 3 in the morning. I was watching like DVD episodes and sort of fast-forwarding through them. “No, he could fit in there.” I tried to pick episodes that at least bigger fans of the show would remember, and I think the ones that I picked most people know.

TVLINE |What came first: calling the character Reggie so that it would fit in the clip? Or just having him be Reggie and realizing that it would fit, thanks to the Reggie Purdue character?
I knew Mulder called him something. I remember that gag from, it was from a Vince Gilligan episode, and I remember the gag of the cell phone, the big cell phone. I knew he called the guy something but I couldn’t remember what so we had to look in that episode, and then he became Reggie. [Laughs] So whatever he called him, that’s what his name was going to be. And then Chris [Carter, series creator] pointed out there was actually a Reggie character that we saw in the first season. He was another FBI agent, but I just ignored that.

TVLINE|I saw an unfinished cut of the episode, so I have to ask you if this was on purpose or just a hiccup: When Reggie is going on about how memories can be redacted to get rid of corporate misdeeds, he mentions a company, but there’s a blip and you can’t hear the name. That’s on purpose, yes?
Yes.

TVLINE|Amazing.
In the original, in the script, the first draft of the script, I actually named the company, and I was asked to rewrite that.

TVLINE| I don’t suppose you’d tell me which company it was?
No. [Pause] I’ll tell you that they were sponsors of the show. [Laughs]

TVLINE|I know you’ve said you sometimes take heat from fans for presenting Mulder with all his foibles, for pointing out how absurd it would be for Scully to stick around for all this time.
I don’t know if I get it from fans. I think I might get it from [David] Duchovny. [Laughs]

TVLINE | What has been his biggest pet peeve?
You know it’s a weird question. It’s a trick question, because although Duchovny complains about me making fun of Mulder, I actually think he likes it. He has never said, “Oh Mulder wouldn’t do that” or “Come on!” He’s always been a very good sport about it.

TVLINE|Going back for a second: I do love that one of the clips you chose was from “Small Potatoes,” an episode you guest-starred in. Was that a must-have? Did you always know that was going to be one of them?
Well it’s a must-have because I get paid. [Laughs]

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
