It would be natural for Madam Secretary‘s protagonist to think twice about her unannounced Oval Office dreams, given that that very room was the site of a lethal act of terrorism in the CBS series’ Season 5 premiere.
The episode opened with the attack, which took place as leaders from India and Pakistan gathered at the White House to sign a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. A giant explosion rocked President Dalton’s office, and it was unclear who — including Stevie, who’d been in attendance — had survived.
Then the action rewound to a week earlier. When India’s response to Hindu violence against Muslims was rather tepid, the president agreed with Elizabeth’s decision to issue a public rebuke against the Indian prime minister. But the secretary of state later softened that shaming in an attempt to make better progress on nuclear disarmament with India, which stymied both Henry and her staff. And when Henry voiced his thoughts on the matter during a panel discussion, his criticism of India led that country’s delegation to break off talks.
Through Elizabeth’s sheer force of will (and a cagey meet-up at her house), the talks resumed. But news of the renewed diplomacy led to protests. And just as Elizabeth pulled up to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for the memorandum signing, the bomb blast went off. Though Elizabeth tried to get inside, her guards spirited her away from the grounds and to safety. Meanwhile, inside, Russell’s longtime assistant June (played by Alice herself, Linda Lavin) wound up with a large piece of glass embedded in her chest, and Stevie passed out after a shard of glass came dangerously close to an artery.
At the hospital, as Elizabeth and Henry awaited word on Stevie, both wondered whether a presidential bid was the best idea. But before they came to any conclusion, the doctor announced that their oldest child had survived surgery and would be fine. June, however, died on the operating table; Russell made an uncharacteristically emotional call to June’s husband to deliver the news.
Though everyone suspected foreign terrorists were responsible for the attack, the culprits turned out to be American white nationalists who were upset about a possible trade deal with India. The memorandum signing was rescheduled, and a shaken Elizabeth summoned three former secretaries of state — Gen. Colin Powell, Madeline Albright and Hillary Clinton — to seek their counsel about how to handle messaging.
Elizabeth’s predecessors agreed that her remarks had to reassure the country and remind citizens that the United States’ strength lies in its core democratic values. The terrorists “attack what has made American great, and still does, and that is our diversity,” Clinton noted, in what may or may not be a sly dig on President Donald Trump’s favorite slogan. (For the record, here’s what executive producer Lori McCreary had to say about the line: “What it is is a statement about what’s happening in our show, because our White House has been attacked by nationalists that we think are home-grown nationalists. So it really is a statement about that fact and what happens when people start getting nervous about people that look ‘other’ being part of all of us.”)
In general, Clinton, Albright and Powell suggested that Elizabeth talk about what unites Americans, and that’s exactly what she did. In a speech at the memorandum signing, Elizabeth called nationalism “the existential threat of our time” and made it clear that nationalism is not patriotism, “but a perversion of it.”
“These are three warriors, truly,” series star Téa Leoni told TVLine about the visiting dignitaries during a late September visit to the set. She added that she took “solace” in Albright, Clinton and Powell’s seemingly tireless commitment to one of America’s founding principles.
“They each have worked in service to this country tirelessly for decades,” Leoni said. “Where I took solace is that they haven’t given up, that they are as motivated to see this through, to show off how strong our democracy can be.”

Attention, TV casting directors: It’s time to find a Hillary Clinton for the small screen.
Warner Bros. TV has acquired the rights to Amy Chozick’s memoir Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling, with plans to develop the book into a series, our sister site Deadline reports.
Published in April 2018, Chasing Hillary chronicles Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential runs against Barack Obama and Donald Trump, as seen through the eyes of Chozick, a New York Times reporter who covered Clinton’s political career for a decade.
Though Chasing Hillary quickly became a bestseller upon its release, Chelsea Clinton was among those who criticized the book and Chozick’s writing process. In multiple tweets on and around the book’s publication date, Clinton called Chozick out for failing to fact-check several anecdotes that were apparently false.
“Hi Amy! The first sentence in the excerpt below is false – everything I’ve heard thus far that you write about me didn’t happen,” Clinton said in one tweet. “We clearly have different definitions of nonfiction. Looking forward to your (belated) fact checking as relates to me. Thanks!”
A network is not yet attached to the potential Chasing Hillary series. Are you interested in the project? Tell us in the comments section below.

The report by the Daily Caller alleges that a Chinese-owned entity, controlled by Beijing, embedded malignant code into the private server former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate Clinton used for handling her correspondence, both personal and work-related, including that which included confidential information with up to top secret classification.
Using this code, the Chinese firm, said to be operating in Washington’s northern Virginia suburbs, had a full access to emails Clinton sent through “courtesy copies” it received in real time, the report claims, citing “sources briefed on the matter.”
According to the Daily Caller, the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) became aware of the “anomaly” in early 2015 and promptly alerted the FBI. ICIG investigator Frank Rucker and attorney Janette McMillan then repeatedly met with FBI agents to brief them on the matter, including with the notorious Peter Strzok. Strzok is a disgraced former member of FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, which has been seeking evidence of US President Donald Trump’s collusion with the Russians to no avail so far.
Strzok, known for injecting a personal anti-Trump vibe into his investigations, was once among those who led the agency’s “Midyear Exam” investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure at the US State Department.
At a July 18 hearing at the House Judiciary Committee, Strzok claimed he did meet Rucker on several occasions, but could not recall the subject matter of their conversations.
At the time, Gohmet accused Strzok of failing to act on the intelligence he allegedly received from the ICIG investigator, that a certain “anomaly” was uncovered on Clinton’s server making “every single one except for four” out of some 30,000 emails on it being forwarded to an address that was not included on the distribution list. Gohmet stressed that the entity that received the emails was a foreign one but unrelated to Russia.
Although the name of the company that allegedly tapped into Clinton’s private server is not disclosed in the report, a former intelligence official told the Daily Caller that it was a public company, not a tech one, but widely known to be the Chinese government’s intelligence collection arm.
The potentially explosive revelation has caught attention of US President Donald Trump, who took to Twitter to tease Russiagaters.
Hillary Clinton’s Emails, many of which are Classified Information, got hacked by China. Next move better be by the FBI & DOJ or, after all of their other missteps (Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Page, Ohr, FISA, Dirty Dossier etc.), their credibility will be forever gone!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2018
Report just out: “China hacked Hillary Clinton’s private Email Server.” Are they sure it wasn’t Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!

“Are they sure it wasn’t Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
It remains to be seen if the hacking allegations against China will be given as much spotlight as those against Russia, however. Back in July, the Mueller team claimed in the indictment that alleged Russian hackers tried to hack into Clinton’s private server “for the first time” on July 27, 2016, after “invited” by Trump who jokingly said he hopes Russia will be able to “find the 30,000 emails that are missing” from Clinton’s private server.

Hillary Clinton has a new target to blame for her losing the 2016 presidential election and, surprisingly, this time it’s not the Russians. According to the Democrat, Facebook is behind for her failure to win the White House.
The crux of the argument is that Facebook charged the Trump campaign team less for advertising on the platform and therefore seemed to favor his candidacy. However, this is exactly how Facebook – a commercial enterprise – works: the more impressions, clicks, interactions, shares and comments that a post generates, the less Facebook relatively charges the advertiser to reach people. And this is where the Trump campaign succeeded.

Simply put, team Hillary was not as social media savvy as team Trump and was therefore charged more for advertising on the platform. Former Facebook advertising staffer Antonio García Martínez explained it all in a February 23 article for Wired entitled ‘How Trump Conquered Facebook – Without Russian Ads.’
“During the run-up to the election, the Trump and Clinton campaigns bid ruthlessly for the same online real estate in front of the same swing-state voters,” Martinez writes. “But because Trump used provocative content to stoke social-media buzz, and he was better able to drive likes, comments, and shares than Clinton, his bids received a boost from Facebook’s click model, effectively winning him more media for less money.”
Following publication of the Wired piece, Trump campaign advisor Brad Parscale tweeted to corroborate. He maintained that, due to Facebook’s cost effectiveness metrics, Trump posts were highly successful on the platform compared to Clinton’s.
I bet we were 100x to 200x her. We had CPMs that were pennies in some cases. This is why @realDonaldTrump was a perfect candidate for FaceBook.
— Brad Parscale (@parscale) February 24, 2018
According to Facebook, Cost Per 1,000 Impressions or CPM is “a common metric used by the online advertising industry to gauge the cost-effectiveness of an ad campaign. It’s often used to compare performance among different ad publishers and campaigns.”

Parscale’s message was then retweeted by Tech Crunch contributor Kim-Mai Cutler, and her tweet in turn was picked up and shared by Clinton herself, with the former presidential hopeful apparently calling for an overhaul of social media in election periods without elaborating on her own campaign’s use of such platforms.
I can’t believe this tweet isn’t going viral. Do people not really care that Facebook may have systematically charged the Clinton campaign an order of magnitude or two more than it was charging Trump to reach American voters? (Which is not allowed in other mediums by law.) https://t.co/S2OgxfgcGq

We should all care about how social media platforms play a part in our democratic process. Because unless it’s addressed it will happen again. The midterms are in 8 months. We owe it to our democracy to get this right, and fast. https://t.co/aM3pRrZW4J

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has directed federal prosecutors to “evaluate certain issues” involving Hillary Clinton’s alleged corruption in a deal which gave Russian company Rosatom control over 20 percent of America’s uranium supply.
In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote that Sessions “has directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters.”
The letters referenced – written by Goodlatte – were dated July 27 and September 26, and included requests by him and other committee members that a special counsel be appointed to investigate certain matters, some of which involved Clinton, according to Fox News.
Among the issues raised was the 2010 Uranium One deal, approved by Clinton when she served as secretary of state in President Barack Obama’s administration. That deal involved selling part of a Canadian-based mining company to Rosatom, resulting in the company acquiring control over 20 percent of America’s uranium supply.
Some Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have claimed – without providing evidence – that Russian interests sought to donate to the Clinton Foundation in a bid to persuade Clinton to support the deal.
Trump has claimed that Clinton was “paid a fortune” to facilitate the sale, and has slammed the “fake media” for ignoring “one of the big stories of the decade.”
Those claims have been denied by Clinton, who called them “baloney” and said there has been “no credible evidence [presented] by anyone.”
Uranium deal to Russia, with Clinton help and Obama Administration knowledge, is the biggest story that Fake Media doesn’t want to follow!

Prosecutors will be assigned to the matters as requested, according to the letter, and will report to Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. In particular, they will “make recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened,” or whether a special counsel will be needed, states the letter, which was delivered ahead of a committee oversight hearing at which Sessions will appear on Tuesday.
The document adds that some issues requested by Goodlatte and other committee members are already being investigated by the Inspector General’s Office. Once the IG’s review is complete, the Department will assess what, if any, additional steps are necessary to address any issues identified by that review. However, the Justice Department does not typically confirm or deny specific investigations, and Boyd stressed that the letter “should not be construed to do so.”

Whether or not you think the development of a second Bill Clinton-related drama series is amazing or ridiculous will depend on what your definition of the word “is” is.
History on Thursday announced that it has greenlit The Breach: Inside the Impeachment of Bill Clinton, a scripted drama based on Peter Baker’s book The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson Clinton. R.J. Cutler (Nashville, The War Room) will executive-produce and direct the six-episode drama, which the network is describing as a political thriller. FreemantleMedia North America and A+E Studios will produce.
The series logline name-checks the impeachment’s key players — including Hillary Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, Newt Gingrich and Ken Starr — and promises to take viewers inside Republican and Democratic war rooms, “revealing the infighting among the president’s advisors, the secret back-channel negotiations between the White House and Congress, Tom DeLay’s strategy to force President Clinton out of office, and the Democrats’ pressure for Clinton to resign.”
The Breach is part of History’s previously announced presidential anthology The Commanders, each four- to 10-hour installment of which will focus on a specific U.S. president at a defining moment in his administration.
The 42nd president also is the subject of another drama projects currently in the works: an upcoming season of FX’s American Crime Story, which will focus on Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky and the scandal and impeachment and acquittal that followed.

US District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto ruled on Wednesday that Shkreli’s post on September 4 showed he posed a danger to the public.
In that post, the 34-year-old offered a generous bounty to anyone who could steal a hair from former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton while she was on her book tour.
“The Clinton Foundation is willing to KILL to protect its secrets. So on HRC’s book tour, try to grab a hair from her. I must confirm the sequences I have. Will pay $ 5,000 per hair obtained from Hillary Clinton,” the Facebook post stated.
Although Shkreli’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, argued the post fell under the right to free speech, Judge Matsumoto disagreed.
“This is a solicitation of assault in exchange for money,” the judge said. “That is not protected by the First Amendment.”
Matsumoto was also unsympathetic to a letter written to her by Shkreli on Tuesday, in which the 34-year-old said the Facebook post was meant as satire.
Brafman maintained that line on Wednesday, prompting the judge to pointedly ask: “What’s funny about that?”
Matsumoto noted that one of Shkreli’s 93,000 Facebook followers could have taken the post seriously, setting out on a mission to steal a piece of Clinton’s hair.
The judge also pointed to a July post by Shkreli in which he said he would have sex with journalist Lauren Duca as part of a pattern of threatening behavior. Shkreli was banned from Twitter in January for harassing Duca after she refused his invitation to attend US President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The judge’s ruling ordered that Shkreli’s bail be revoked, resulting in jail time for the former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, who was convicted in August of defrauding investors of two hedge funds he ran, MSMB Capital and MSMB Healthcare.
Brafman unsuccessfully pleaded with Matsumoto following the ruling, asking her to reconsider sending Shkreli to what he said would be a maximum security jail, or at least give him until Monday to prove he was not a threat.
“We are obviously disappointed,” Brafman told reporters outside the Brooklyn, New York, courthouse.
“We believed that the court arrived at the wrong decision. But she’s the judge, and right now we will have to live with this decision.”
Shkreli had been enjoying his freedom since his arrest in December 2015, after paying a bail of $ 5 million.
Matsumoto scheduled Shkreli’s sentencing for the securities fraud conviction for January 16. His charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years, but the 34-year-old is expected to serve much less, partly because none of the investors involved in his schemes lost any money.
Shkreli became a household name in 2015 when he raised the price of the anti-infection drug Daraprim by 5,000 percent, from $ 13.50 to $ 750 a pill.
That move resulted in him being dubbed “Pharma Bro” and “the most hated man in America,” as people with weakened immune systems – including AIDS patients – have come to rely on the pill.
Following a backlash from politicians, patients’ rights groups and Twitter users, Shkreli eventually announced his company had agreed to “lower the price of Daraprim to a point that is more affordable and is able to allow the company to make a profit, but a very small profit,” ABC News reported at the time.
