Mars has ice sheets more than 100 meters deep hiding beneath its red dust, offering a potential water source for future explorers of the Red Planet, according to new research.

A team of scientists, led by Colin Dundas, a geologist at the US Geological Survey, analyzed data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), specifically looking at eight areas where erosion occurred.

The results revealed massive subsurface ice sheets on the planet extending from just below the surface to a depth of at least 100 meters (328ft).

The remarkable ice cliffs appear to contain distinct layers, which could preserve a record of Mars’ past climate, according to the report.

Scientists say an analysis of the deposits would unleash a treasure trove of information to geologists about the past Martian climate.

“That preserved record would be of extreme importance to go back to,” G. Scott Hubbard, a space scientist at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California told Science.

The discovery is particularly exciting for future human exploration of the planet previously renowned for its dry arid landscape.

Scientists point out that the hidden ice sheets could pave the way for supporting life on Mars. These sites are “very exciting” for potential human bases, Angel Abbud-Madrid, director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden said.

The ice cliffs promise abundant, accessible ice, noted Abbud-Madrid, who led a recent NASA study exploring potential landing sites for astronauts.

This is not the first time ice has been found on Mars. Over the last decade the MRO has returned high resolution images and data detailing the landscape.

A radar instrument on the MRO previously detected signatures of thick, buried ice across the planet’s belly, however, this latest study indicates a greater prevalence of Martian ice.

“This kind of ice is more widespread than previously thought,” Dundas told Science.

The cliffs were all found at latitudes about 55° north or south – discouraging latitudes for a solar-powered human base, according to the team.

Scientists now want to seek out similar cliffs closer to the equator, hoping that the next surprise awaiting them is the discovery of ice nearer to the tropics.

Once the starting stalls open the runners have plenty of work to do if they are to win the world’s most famous Flat race.

Jockeys will be keen to gain a good position immediately as the field climbs the 184 feet towards the seven furlong pole, the highest point on the course.

A slow getaway can prove costly as a jockey will want to conserve their horse’s energy rather than chase their mounts into position.

From that point on the field cross over towards the inside rail and begin to travel downhill, continually turning left.

This can unsettle some horses, who, if not already relaxed and in a good position, can lose all hope of victory.

An example was in 1986 when Greville Starkey had hot favourite Dancing Brave out of position, and as a result had too much ground to make up turning into the straight.

The next challenge for a horse is the sweep down into Tattenham Corner and into the straight.

In 1972, Lyphard, riding by Freddie Head, famously veered violently out right towards the fun fair.

Once the field straighten for home horses then have to handle the steep camber of the track which slopes in towards the rail, and tired horses will soon become unbalanced.

As the leaders kick for home there is another hill half a furlong out towards the winning post.

It is here where horses with the stamina to see out a true mile and a half will be running on while the non-stayers will begin the flounder.

There was a time when off-road and unorthodox sports games were quite common, from BMX and dirt biking to wakeboarding. So in some ways, the dirt tracks and cliffside paths of Lonely Mountains: Downhill seem like a product of a time capsule from a past era, focused on intense downhill bicycling, a stylish low-poly aesthetic, and custom physics to capture every heavy landing and bone-crushing crashes.

Lonely Mountains promises to live up to its namesake: just you, your bike, and nature, as you race down dangerously twisting and uneven tracks. Drifting around narrow corners leaving spraying dirt in your wake, weaving between trees and leaping across rock outcrops, will require careful management of momentum to reach the bottom of the game’s mountains. However if the tracks aren’t daring enough, you can forge your own path, going literally off-road into the dense forests and boulders to earn the fastest lap times.

But such reckless downhill action won’t leave you unscathed, and Lonely Mountains‘s physics engine means you’ll see your rider suffer from those bad landings and headlong pedaling into trees. Much like its more over-the-top genre brethren Trials, sending your rider catapulting off cliff faces and into narrow groves of tress may be as enjoyable as skillfully surviving each descent.
