A lawyer representing Martin Tripp has released a 10-page police report that he says raises new questions concerning a purported June 20 shooting threat to the Tesla Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada, where the technician worked until he was fired on June 15. The document was first reported by Bloomberg.

A month ago, Tesla sued Tripp for alleged trade secrets violations, and he has recently countersued, claiming that he has been defamed.

The report shows that a call expressing vague concern over what Tripp apparently might do, was somehow translated to law enforcement as a direct violent attack against the Nevada facility.

  • In an already wonky quarter, JPMorgan reported taking a $ 143 million loss in its equities trading department from a single client.
  • The department had strong equities performance apart from that one loss.
  • The client was identified as Steinhoff International, a South African retailer embroiled in an accounting scandal.
  • Total losses related to Steinhoff could be as much as $ 273 million.

After accounting for effects from the new tax law, JPMorgan posted a solid quarter, announcing earnings of $ 1.69 share Friday.

But in an already wonky quarter, JPMorgan reported an unusual loss not related to the new law: Its equities team took a $ 143 million loss from a single client.

JPMorgan confirmed the loss was connected to the South African retailer Steinhoff International, which is embroiled in an accounting scandal.

“It is by far and away the largest loss in that business we’ve seen since the crisis,” CFO Marianne Lake said in an analyst call.

Lake confirmed that the corporate and investment bank’s $ 130 million provision for credit loss in the fourth quarter was also attributable to Steinhoff.

After accounting for the $ 130 million in additional credit losses, JPMorgan booked a total of $ 273 million in losses related to Steinhoff in the fourth quarter.

Here’s what JPMorgan said about the peculiar loss in its earnings presentation (emphasis ours):

“Equity Markets revenue was flat compared to a strong prior year and included the impact of a mark-to market loss of $ 143 million on a margin loan to a single client. Excluding the mark-to-market loss, Equity Markets revenue was up 12%, driven by strength in Prime Services, Cash Equities and corporate derivatives …

“The provision for credit losses was an expense of $ 130 million, driven by a reserve build for the same single client.”

Other banks are expected to be affected by Steinhoff’s accounting loss as well.

Citigroup, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, and Nomura initially extended a margin loan to an entity controlled by Christo Wiese, then Steinhoff’s chairman, according to The Wall Street Journal, and the losses from the loan were expected to be spread among a broader group of banks.

The entity controlled by Wiese put up millions of shares in Steinhoff as collateral for the loan — shares that collapsed in value following the accounting scandal.

Dozens of defense attorneys staged an impromptu protest outside a Brooklyn, New York courthouse after a Legal Aid Society client was arrested by federal authorities on immigration charges.

 

Chanting “Stay out, ICE!” and “Shame on you!” attorneys with the Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Defender Services protested outside the Brooklyn Criminal Court on Tuesday after Genaro Rojas-Hernandez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

“They arrested him and put him into a restricted area. The courtroom’ s sergeant pushed me and the court officers kept me away,” his attorney, Rebecca Kavanagh, told the New York Daily News.

Rojas-Hernandez was in court to see his charges of domestic violence dismissed.

A statement from the Office of Court Administration said several legal aid attorneys escalated the situation by “purposely interfering in an arrest situation.”

“Only for the professionalism and restraint of the court officers involved, there were no injuries and the attorneys were not arrested for obstructing governmental administration,” the court said.

The protesting attorneys marched to the Brooklyn district attorney’s office, demanding that the court and and Chief Judge Janet DiFiore implement a “Sanctuary Court” policy, which would prevent New York Court staff from collaborating with ICE officers or allowing them to enter the court property.  

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez was also unhappy with the ICE intervention.

“Today’s ICE arrest during a hearing on a serious domestic violence case denied due process for both victim and defendant,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “Such actions deter victims from reporting abuse and threaten public safety. I join our public defenders in calling on ICE to reconsider their misguided policy and stop conducting enforcement raids in courthouses.”

In its first year in office, the Trump administration set in motion sweeping changes in how the federal government dealt with those living in the US illegally. It is estimated there are 11 million immigrants living the US without legal status.

An appalling fatal attack on a young immigrant barber in broad daylight in Moscow was captured on film and uploaded online, causing outrage. The attacker, reportedly a dissatisfied customer who paid around $ 3.50 for the haircut, has since been detained.

The story was initially shared by State Duma MP Anton Belyakov on his Facebook page. Belyakov says that one of his friends knew the victim and characterized him as a very skillful barber. 

The account describes the victim, known as ‘Danya’ among colleagues, as an unassuming young man from the central Asian Republic of Uzbekistan. Media reports have identified him as 24-year-old Dastan Adekhanov.

Belyakov wrote that the conflict began after Adekhanov gave a male client a haircut, charging him 200 rubles ($ 3.49) on Thursday – a low price by Moscow standards.

The client was apparently dissatisfied and came back to complain on Friday.

“He [the client] said that he looked in the mirror and didn’t like his haircut,” Belyakov said.

The barbershop staff attempted to resolve the situation and improve his haircut, but the client did not like any of the options.

Instead of asking for his money back, the man suddenly dragged Dastan into the street.

Footage of the attack, uploaded by Belyakov to Facebook and YouTube, shows a young man in a black jacket being chased by a man in yellow T-shirt with what appears to be a long sharp object in his hand, reportedly a skewer. The attacker appears to stab the young man several times while onlookers stop to watch but do not intervene.

The man then walks away, leaving the victim in agony, and turns to walk back moments later to check on him. Moments later, the young man collapses and remains motionless. He reportedly died before an ambulance arrived.

While the authenticity of the video has not yet been verified, it has been partly confirmed by investigators. Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement on its website that a criminal case has been opened against a 26-year-old man who has been charged with murder. The statement, which did not disclose the names but said the victim was a 24-year-old man, said the attacker has been arrested and has confessed.

A police source told TASS on Sunday that the attacker was an unemployed resident of Russia’s Kirov Region.

Belyakov’s post and media reports that followed caused outrage online in Russia, with many condemning the suspected murderer and wondering why passersby did not intervene. Belyakov titled the video ‘On thugs and gastarbeiters [migrant workers]. A murder for 200 rubles.’

The project is now a reality: Twitterrific for macOS is available for $ 20 in the Mac App Store.

According to Iconfactory, “The app has been re-imagined from the ground up to be both fast and friendly, and is chock full of modern features that make Twitter fun to use.” Using Twitterrific promises to be an uncluttered experience, as the developer scrapes out ads, promoted tweets and “while you were away” updates. Tweets are shown in chronological order, and other people’s likes won’t be part of your stream, unlike the Twitter website or official app. Twitterrific for macOS supports Notification Center, plays nice with Mail, Messages and Facebook. Twitterrific still has its iconic multi-window layout that you can go full screen with, but also now has a new Media Viewer to let you browse multiple images and videos. Media can be detached to its own window, too.

The developer promises full accessibility for Twitterrific, too, which empowers users with disabilities to navigate their timeline, compose tweets and attach image descriptions using VoiceOver. These will be read to users along with the text via the same system. Twitterrific supports both light and dark visual themes, along with full support for font and type sizes. You can also decide whether to show media thumbnails in the timeline, minimize them or let them stay at the default large size. If you use the app on your iPhone, iPad or another Mac, Twitterrific will sync your feed reading position across devices.

And that’s not all. You can delete and edit your own tweets in the app itself, use Emoji in your messages, read tweet storms as a thread, and translate tweets into your own language. You can view user profiles and past tweets, likes and mentions, block and report spammers with a click and use keyboard shortcuts and commands to manage it all without a mouse.

A prisoners’ rights group has accused Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai of having a conflict of interest because he used to represent a prison phone company as a lawyer.

Under Pai’s direction, the FCC dropped its court defense of rules capping the intrastate phone rates charged to prisoners. The decision helped prison phone companies—including Pai’s former client, Securus Technologies—continue to charge high prices.

Pai “represented Securus as its attorney while employed as a partner with the law firm of Jenner & Block, LLP, immediately preceding his confirmation as FCC Commissioner in May 2012,” Human Rights Defense Center Executive Director Paul Wright wrote in a filing with the commission yesterday.

Turan has struggled to nail down a starting spot since joining two years ago from Atletico Madrid.

“Arda will stay at Barca,” he said. 

“He has three years remaining on his contract.

“He will join the training camp due to start on July 12. There is nothing new regarding this.”

Barca meanwhile, tied down to a new long-term deal yesterday.

The Argentine has signed a contract extension that will see him stay at the club until 2021.

Valverde has yet to make any acquisitions so far this summer.
