The pontiff likens homosexuality to a modern – and apparently dangerous – trend in his new book, ‘The Strength of a Vocation’, which is set to be released Monday in 10 languages.

“In our societies it even seems that homosexuality is fashionable and that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church,” Francis wrote. “Therefore, the Church recommends that people with that kind of ingrained tendency should not be accepted into the ministry or consecrated life.”

The Pope advised that the Church, which has been tainted by numerous sexual scandals, must urge homosexual priests to be “impeccably responsible” and avoid “scandalizing either their communities or the faithful holy people of God.”

“It’s better for them to leave the ministry or the consecrated life rather than to live a double life,” he stressed.

While the Vatican prohibits sexual activity between members of the same sex, it has also called for tolerance against members of the LGBT community. In 2005, the Vatican banned gays and all those with “homosexual tendencies or support the so-called ‘gay culture’” from entering the seminaries and holy orders.

A fine arts school in Russia’s Siberia has been criticized online after deciding to hastily cover up its nude antique sculptures – all because they thought it might upset visiting Orthodox Christian priests.

The unusual take on artistic nudity occurred in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk on Thursday. Photos and a video from the State University of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts captured antique sculptures in the lobby, draped from head to toe with large baggy cloths. The act of impromptu censorship was done ahead of a visit by Russian Orthodox priests, who were arriving for a panel discussion on making local churches wheelchair-accessible.

“We were told that the sculptures were covered to avoid hurting their feelings,” one of the attendees told local media.

The fact that the statues were ‘dressed-up’ ahead of the clergymen’s visit was later all but confirmed by the university’s spokesperson as their own initiative. Once the priests left, the cloths were removed, and the statues are now back to their original ‘offensive’ form.

The incident triggered a wave of almighty facepalms online, with commentators ridiculing university staff for the uncalled-for act of self-censorship. Some took particular offence at the fact that it happened in Novosibirsk, which is considered to be Siberia’s capital of science.

Local outlet NGS.ru, which broke the bizarre news of statue-dressing, even mocked the move by photoshopping similar golden pieces of cloth around landmark sculptures to see how they might look.

Notably, the incident was met with mixed reaction from the Church. One of the priests who reportedly attended the event said that covering the statues’ naughty parts was the right call. “It’s one thing when the students are using these sculptures as drawing models because it’s a part of their curriculum. And it’s a completely different issue when outsiders arrive, who are by most part members of the clergy, as well as parishioners. There shouldn’t be something that makes a man feel unsettled,” Aleksandr Matruk told the Moscow-based radio station Govorit Moskva, causing even more uproar online.

However, Orthodox Church spokesman Vladimir Legoyda responded to the incident with a proverbial “send a fool to the market and a fool he will return again” – squarely laying all blame on the university staff.

The clergy should stop behaving like CEOs and resume their pastoral role of leading the faithful, the Dean of Christ Church has claimed. It comes amid increasing reports of the clergy stressing out in their attempt to get more people to attend church.

Speaking to an audience at the charity Sons & Friends of the Clergy, Professor Martyn Percy said the clergy is suffering from the “anxiety about growth and organization and professionalism.”

“The church has become too organizational and bureaucratic… Sharp missional evangelistic thinking has created a culture where clergy feel like employees, chasing targets – and they feel guilty when they don’t achieve those targets, or when they can no longer relate to what has become an organisation,” Percy said, according to the Telegraph.

He claimed the business-like “renewal and reform” approach instilled by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, a former oil executive, is standing in the way of the clergy’s duty and wellbeing.

Welby has been pursuing an approach aimed at stopping the rapid decline in adherents to the church, which also includes courses for bishops to learn managerial skills.

It comes amid reports of growing mental health issues among vicars. According to Sons & Friends of the Clergy CEO Jeremy Moodey, 30 percent of Anglican clergy had suffered from depression since their ordination, while up to 40 percent had considered leaving their posts because of stress.

Percy reminded the clergy of why they took up the ministry, and said they “need to stop being the CEO of an organization that is chasing growth targets,” or a kind of “area manager” but instead must understand that the two key symbols that a bishop holds are a chair (to teach) and a pastoral staff (a symbol of care).

“We can get that from good lay leaders and diocesan secretaries.”

Like it or not, the church is hemorrhaging members and struggling to get bums on pews.

A report in May suggested the number of people in Britain identifying as Christian fell from 55 percent to 43 percent between 1983 and 2015.

The same drop was not seen in other religions, however, as non-Christian believers such as Hindus and Muslims quadrupled.

According to ‘The “No Religion” Population of Britain’ report by Stephen Bullivant, professor of theology and the sociology of religion at St Mary’s University, the total number of non-religious people in the UK, so-called “nones,” now accounts for 48.6 percent of the population.
