Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said that she regularly saw former President Donald Trump "mishandle" sensitive records.
She told USA Today that this included seeing him putting records in his jacket pocket, risking staffers without the security clearance being able to see them.
Grisham told the outlet that this posed a potential national-security threat, but Trump either didn't realise or didn't care.
The USA today article also drew on officials from past White House administrations saying that Trump's handling of documents appeared to be a troubling breakdown in the protocols meant to kept such files safe.
Concerns about the former president's handling of federal records led to the FBI searching his Mar-a-Lago residence in August. They found more than 10,000 government documents, many of which were classified.
Some of the records were so sensitive that even agents needed special clearance to see them, according to Justice Department court documents.
Exactly how documents are required to be handled depends on their level of classification. The most secret ones are meant only to be viewed in secure facilities.
But, per court filings connected to the raid at Mar-a-Lago, highly classified records were instead kept mingled with other records, newspaper cuttings and scraps of Trump's handwritten notes.
Grisham has previously said that during Trump's time in office, records would "just disappear", and that he carelessly stored classified documents in boxes along with newspapers and miscellaneous paperwork.
She and other former aides have also previously spoken about Trump and his staff's treatment of official documents, including ripping, burning and flushing them.
Grisham joined the Trump campaign in 2016 and went on to serve in various roles, including Trump's press secretary and Chief of Staff and press secretary for First Lady Melania Trump.
She quit the administration on January 6, 2021, as the Capitol riot was unfolding, and has since become a vocal critic of the former president.
Trump in return has attacked Grisham and said that she is not telling the truth about him.

Former CIA analyst Philip Mudd got into a heated argument with Republican strategist Paris Dennard on Friday, after Dennard suggested Mudd made “more money” from consulting firms because of his security clearance.
“Your contracts and your consulting gigs pay you a lot more money because of the access that you have,” Dennard said, adding “I hope the president continues to do this,” referring to the security clearance revocations.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Democrats have been vocal in condemning US President Donald Trump for revoking former CIA chief John Brennan’s security clearance, forgetting that time he spied on a Democrat-run Senate committee in the name of #Resistance.
On Wednesday, Trump revoked Brennan’s security clearance, which had allowed the ex-spymaster to continue to access classified documents since he resigned last January.
The White House said that Brennan used his security clearance to “sow division and chaos,” and lend a sheen of credibility to his public criticisms of the president. The White House looked into revoking Brennan’s clearance after he accused Trump of “treason” for meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.
Straight away, Democrats jumped in to defend Brennan’s character and to blast Trump for pulling his clearance. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California), ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said that “In adding John Brennan to his enemies list, Trump demonstrates again how deeply insecure and vindictive he is.”
Rep. Don Beyer (D-Virginia) called the revocation “the weak, paranoid, authoritarian behavior of a dictator.”
In adding John Brennan to his enemies list, Trump demonstrates again how deeply insecure and vindictive he is — two character flaws dangerous in any President.
An enemies list is ugly, undemocratic and un-American. I also believe this action to silence a critic is unlawful. https://t.co/bfOhThIWfq

A flimsy excuse to set a terrible precedent.
Trump is clearly punishing @JohnBrennan for criticizing him, cracking down on a dissent and retaliating against a private citizen’s free speech.
The President has adopted the weak, paranoid, authoritarian behavior of a dictator. https://t.co/c04RuFjihx

Former Vice President Joe Biden called Trump’s act “unbecoming of a President,” and warned that it would only embolden Brennan in his public crusade against Trump.
In the time I have known him, John Brennan has never been afraid to speak up and give it to you straight. Revoking his security clearance is an act unbecoming of a President. If you think it will silence John, then you just don't know the man.
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) August 15, 2018
Biden’s words were echoed by former ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who said that clearance or not, Brennan “will now be just as vigorous & vigilant in defending American values.”
I had the privilege of working with @JohnBrennan at the White House. I have never met anyone more dedicated to defending our national security than John. He will now be just as vigorous & vigilant in defending American values, including free speech, without a sec clearance.

Brennan’s thesaurus-heavy Tweets and self-righteous grandstanding have made him a hero to the anti-Trump #resistance. However, while Democrats are falling over themselves to pat the former career spy on the back, there was a time when Brennan spied on Democratic lawmakers compiling a report into his agency’s use of torture tactics – and got away with it.
In 2014, as the Senate Intelligence Committee was compiling a lengthy report into the CIA’s use of ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ at its secret prisons, chair Dianne Feinstein (D-California) accused Brennan’s agency of secretly monitoring the committee’s computers and removing sensitive documents.
After initially denying any wrongdoing and rejecting Feinstein’s “spurious allegations,” Brennan quietly apologized to lawmakers after an internal review proved the senator right.
Despite being caught red-handed spying on his overseers, the Obama administration Department of Justice declined to press charges against Brennan, and he remained in charge of the CIA.
Just as Democrats seem eager to forgive past wrongs in the name of anti-Trump resistance, the President’s supporters on the right were quick to remember Brennan’s shady practices and praise Trump’s decision to revoke his clearance.
The media is straight up losing their minds that John Brennan lost his clearance
I wonder who their “senior national security source” was…

Libertarian-minded Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), who first proposed pulling Brennan’s clearance, cheered Trump’s decision on Wednesday, and took the opportunity to remind voters that he opposed Brennan’s stewardship of the CIA from the get-go.
I applaud President Trump for his revoking of John Brennan’s security clearance. I urged the President to do this. Read more here: https://t.co/SAQNTJ1UAn

True to form, Brennan himself responded to Trump in a verbose tweet, stating that “my principles are worth far more than clearances,” and vowing to keep up the #resistance.
‘Monetized security clearance’
The White House has also mulled revoking security clearances for a host of other former intelligence personnel, including former CIA Director Michael Hayden, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former FBI Director James Comey.
Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in July that they had “politicized, and in some cases monetized, their public service and security clearances.” Since leaving their positions, all have become household names for their public opposition to Trump. Brennan now works for NBC News as a “senior national security and intelligence analyst,” Clapper found a new home at CNN, and Comey penned a book thrashing the Trump administration and comparing Trump himself to a “mob boss.”
Hayden told CNN viewers on Wednesday that Trump’s decision to revoke Brennan’s clearance was “threatening to the rest of us” and amounted to an attempt to silence dissent.
Former Hillary Clinton aide Philippe Reines was more blunt, calling Trump a “vindictive little bitch.”
trump just revoked former CIA Director John Brennan’s security clearance.
What a vindictive little bitch.

The Trump administration is also looking into revoking the clearances of a number of former officials, including former FBI director James Comey and recently fired FBI agent Peter Strzok, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters on Wednesday.
According to a statement by Trump, “any benefits that senior officials might glean from consultations with Mr. Brennan are now outweighed by the risks posed by his erratic conduct and behavior. Second, that conduct and behavior has tested and far exceeded the limits of any professional courtesy that may have been due to him.”
Last month, after Brennan accused Trump of “treason” over the Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the White House announced it would look at revoking the clearances of the former CIA chief and other senior officials who have parlayed their status in the Obama administration into jobs as media critics of Trump.
Brennan joined NBC News as “senior national security and intelligence analyst” in February. His criticism of Trump on air and on Twitter has gone beyond questioning the president’s policies, instead focusing on claims he is unfit for office.

President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, does not have a high-enough security clearance level to gain access to some of the most sensitive US government secrets, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with his access.
Kushner, who was named by Trump as a senior adviser on a wide range of issues, was granted a permanent security clearance in late May, but only at the “top secret” level, a status that does not provide access to closely guarded intelligence, the Post said, citing the two sources.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly suggested that Larry Kudlow’s past substance-abuse wouldn’t complicate his path to a security clearance once he’s officially installed as President Donald Trump’s newest chief economic adviser.

Kushner’s clearance was downgraded from Top Secret to Secret, according to Politico, which cited a February 23 memo supposedly originating from the White House. No link or copy of the document was provided, however.
The memo also reportedly states that all interim White House staff working with temporary Top Secret or Secret Compartmentalized Information (SCI) clearances were downgraded to “secret.” The downgrade was a part of reforms introduced by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly after a scandal involving staff secretary Rob Porter uncovered that he and many other key aides had not received their permanent clearances, but were still authorized to look at sensitive materials anyway.
Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, never received his full security clearance due to delays with his paperwork and missing information on his application forms, including financial data. He was asked on several occasions to resubmit them. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein informed the White House of the backlog earlier this month.
Kushner once enjoyed access to some of the highest-level documents in the White House, the president’s daily brief, but will lose that privilege after the downgrade. Despite this, White House officials have assured that he will remain an important part of the team.
The White House maintains that Jared Kushner’s ability to do his job, which involves negotiating peace in the Middle East, won’t be affected by the new security clearance policy. Pretty much no one else sees it that way.
— Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins) February 27, 2018
“We actually haven’t commented on Jared’s issue indicated, but we have commented on his ability to do his job,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders mentioned in a POLITICO interview. “He’s a valued member of the team and he will continue to do the important work that he’s been doing since he’s started in the administration.”
Even though Trump had the authority to grant Kushner permanent clearance, he declined to do so and left the final decision with Kelly.
“The American people deserve a White House staff that meets the highest standards and that has been carefully vetted — especially those who work closely with the president or handle sensitive national security information,” Kelly wrote in the 5-page memo on February 16. “We should — and in the future, must — do better.”
Kushner, 37, was commissioned by Trump to be an envoy to broker peace agreements between Israeli and Palestinian officials. Since the process requires access to Top Secret documents, chances are his current setback will hinder these efforts.
Josh Raffel, the leading spokesperson for Trump’s Israeli-Palestine peace process is set to abdicate his position at the White House within the next two months, Axios reported. Raffel has not given an official reason for his departure.

Jared Kusnher is said to be resisting an internal push at the White House to clamp down on the flow of classified information among staffers who do not hold a full security clearance, The New York Times reported Tuesday night.
The effort, led by White House chief of staff John Kelly is seen as a potential challenge to Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, who has been working with an interim security clearance because of an ongoing background investigation by the FBI.See the rest of the story at Business Insider
