Up to 5,000 have been killed and over 3,000, mostly women and children, taken captive and enslaved.

On Wednesday, the Israeli parliament voted down a draft bill that would have formally recognized the atrocities of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) against the Yazidi people as a genocide.

The proposed legislation was rejected by 58 parliamentarians, including the members from the ruling right-wing coalition led by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Thirty-eight votes in support of the bill were not enough to tip the balance.

The ruling coalition holds 61 of the 120 seats, with Netanyahu’s party Likud controlling the biggest share, 30 seats.

The sponsor of the bill, Zionist Union MP Ksenia Svetlova, called the vote “shameful.” She also dismissed the coalition’s argument that the UN has not formally designated the well-documented massacre of Yazidis as genocide as “ridiculous,” according to I24 news.

While the UN has not formally labelled the suffering of thousands of the 700,000-strong Yazidi population living under IS rule as a “genocide” either, a UN-mandated inquiry endorsed the notion to do so last year.

Marking the third anniversary of the attack on the Yazidi community on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq on 3 August, 2014, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic published a report, calling on the international community to “recognize the crime of genocide being committed by ISIL against the Yazidis and to undertake steps to refer the situation to justice.”

The report noted that some 3,000 women and girls are still being held by IS who forces them to endure rape and beatings. Many girls, some as young as 10, have been sold at slave markets as terrorists viewed Yazidis as “non-believers” and thus, property. Thousands of fighting-age men have been slaughtered, while boys were forced to convert to Islam and sent to their deaths. According to various estimates, between 3,000 and 5,000 Yazidi men have perished while as many as 10,000 may have been enslaved.

Voicing her dismay with Israeli lawmakers’ decision, Svetlova tweeted that the MPs “voted in hypocrisy and nationalist egoism,” arguing that there was no other explanation for the government’s stance.

Apparently, some MPs wanted to side with Svetlova but were forced to vote along party lines. Likud MP Yehuda Glick, himself an Orthodox Jew, said that he was “ashamed” by his own vote but that he “had no choice” other than to follow his party’s instructions.

Some 85 percent of the Yazidi population is believed to have been displaced by the wars wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria. Some have sought asylum in Europe. However, not everyone has found safe haven there; one Yazidi teenager recently told RT about her encounter with her IS rapist-turned refugee in Germany.

So far, only Armenia has officially recognized the genocide of the Yazidis. In January, its parliament passed a resolution condemning the massacre and called for the perpetrators to be held responsible. Armenia houses some 50,000 Yazidis, making them Armenia’s largest ethnic minority.

‘It was ethnic cleansing’: Polish president says Kiev must admit to massacre of Poles in WWII https://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/ https://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 09:58:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/ Kiev must acknowledge the mass killing of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists in the 1940s for what it is – ethnic cleansing – Polish President Andrzej Duda said after reportedly snubbing an invitation for a joint commemoration.

On Sunday, Duda visited Ukraine to mark the 75th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres, the mass killing of civilians by radical Ukrainian nationalists in what is now western Ukraine. The brutal massacres carried out by the UPA, the militant wing of Stepan Bandera’s Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), was part of a larger campaign of ethnic cleansing by Nazi Germany and its allies, but is considered a distinct episode of Ukrainian-Polish ethnic conflict by many historians.

“This day is a sad one for many Polish families, who in 1942-1944 lost their loved ones in Volhynia. It is estimated that 100,000 Poles were murdered here,” Duda said during a visit to Ukraine. “Not soldiers, but ordinary people. Farmers, who cultivated the land, entire families, women, children and elderly people.”

Duda said the killings were “simple ethnic cleansing” ordered by the OUN and aimed at ridding the region of Poles, and that Ukraine has to admit this truth for Ukrainian-Polish relations to move forward.

The difference of opinion on wartime violence is a thorny issue for Warsaw and Kiev. Many in modern Ukraine consider Stepan Bandera a national hero and tend to overlook the atrocities committed by Ukrainian nationalists.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance insists that the killings in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia were a tragic, though justifiable, response to the persecution of Ukrainians by the Poles, which was not unlike the killings of Ukrainians by Polish militias during the war.

Consistent with this view, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko this weekend traveled to Poland to take part in the opening of a memorial to the victims of the March 1944 Sahryn massacre, which was committed by Polish militias, including the Armia Krajowa insurgency force and their allies from the Bataliony Chlopskie.

“In the memory of innocent victims of Sahryn I am calling on all of you, Ukrainians and Poles, for Christian forgiveness. Mutual forgiveness and not revenge is what innocent victims of fratricidal conflicts between our people are calling for from heavens,” Poroshenko said.

Duda also spoke of forgiveness and reconciliation, but noted that the difference in the number of victims on the Polish and Ukrainian sides during the conflict was “glaring.” He said an estimated 5,000 civilians were killed by Polish militias in retaliation for the actions of the Ukrainian nationalists.

As the anniversary of the tragedy was drawing near, Ukraine sought to negotiate a joint commemoration with Poland, which rejected the offer, Ukrainian media reported last week citing diplomatic sources.

Tensions between Kiev and Warsaw have been rising over the past several years, as nationalist sentiments have grown in both nations. The escalation has been marked by several incidents on both sides of the border, including the vandalization of monuments, hostile chants during demonstrations, and in one case a rocket attack on a Polish consulate in Ukraine, which fortunately did not hurt anyone.

Ceasefire in Myanmar ends amid allegations of government-initiated ethnic cleansing https://briefnews.eu/ceasefire-in-myanmar-ends-amid-allegations-of-government-initiated-ethnic-cleansing/ https://briefnews.eu/ceasefire-in-myanmar-ends-amid-allegations-of-government-initiated-ethnic-cleansing/#respond Tue, 10 Oct 2017 09:47:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ceasefire-in-myanmar-ends-amid-allegations-of-government-initiated-ethnic-cleansing/ FILE PHOTO: Rohingya refugee children look on at a refugee camp in Palang Khali near Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, October 4, 2017. YANGON (Reuters) – Myanmar authorities said there was no sign of attacks by Rohingya Muslim militants on Tuesday as a one-month insurgent ceasefire came to end.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) announced the ceasefire from Sept. 10 in order, they said, to facilitate aid deliveries to Rakhine State, where their attacks on the security forces on Aug. 25 triggered a ferocious government crackdown.

The government offensive in the north of Rakhine State has sent some 520,000 Rohingya civilians fleeing to Bangladesh and has drawn international condemnation and U.N. accusations of ethnic cleansing.

The government denies ethnic cleansing. It had rebuffed the insurgents’ ceasefire, saying it did not negotiate with terrorists.

Myanmar says more than 500 people have been killed in the violence since late August, most of them insurgents.

Even before the government offensive, the small, lightly armed ARSA had only appeared capable of hit-and-run raids on security posts and unable to mount any sort of sustained challenge to the army.

Authorities had been on guard over recent days and tightened security in the state capital of Sittwe as the end of the ceasefire approached, a state government spokesman said.

“We had information that the ARSA could attack but there have been no reports,” the spokesman, Min Aung, said early on Tuesday.

The insurgents said on Saturday they were ready to respond to any peace move by the government, even though the ceasefire was ending at midnight on Monday.

They also reiterated their demand for rights for the Rohingya, who have never been regarded as an indigenous minority in Myanmar and so have been denied citizenship under a law that links nationality to ethnicity.

Instead, Rohingya are seen as illegal immigrants with freedoms restricted and rights denied, and are derided by ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, and much of the wider popular in Myanmar, which has seen a surge in Buddhist nationalism in recent years.

Thousands more Rohingya villagers have arrived in Bangladesh this week in a new surge of refugees, now also driven by fears of starvation and telling of bloody attacks by Buddhist mobs on people trekking towards the border.

‘Very real threat’

Villagers in Rakhine said food was running out because rice in the fields was not ready for harvest and the state government had closed village markets and restricted the transport of food, apparently to cut supplies to the militants.

“While the Myanmar military has engaged in a campaign of violence, there is mounting evidence that Rohingya women, men and children are now also fleeing the very real threat of starvation,” rights group Amnesty International said.

REUTERS/Soe Zeya TunThomson ReutersThe government has cited worry about food as one of he reasons people have been giving for leaving, but a senior state government official on Monday dismissed any suggestion of starvation.

Myanmar leader and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced scathing international criticism for not doing more to stop the violence, although she has no power over the security forces under a military-drafted constitution.

The United States and European Union have been considering targeted sanctions against Myanmar military leaders, diplomats and officials have told Reuters, although they are wary of action that could destabilize the country’s transition to democracy.

EU foreign ministers will discuss Myanmar on Oct. 16, and they said in a draft joint statement the bloc “will suspend invitations to the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar/Burma armed forces and other senior military officers”.

Such a move would be largely symbolic, but could be followed by further action.

The military campaign against the insurgents is popular inside Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, where there is little sympathy for the Rohingya.

Suu Kyi’s party, in the first attempt to improve relations between religions since the latest violence erupted, will hold inter-faith prayers on Tuesday at a stadium in the biggest city of Yangon, with the participation of Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and Christians.

“This is for peace and stability,” party spokesman Aung Shin told Reuters. “Peace in Rakhine and peace nationwide.”

The Rohingya had pinned hopes for change on Suu Kyi’s party but it has been wary of upsetting Buddhist nationalists. Her party did not field a single Muslim candidate in the 2015 election that it swept.

Rohingya ethnic cleansing visible from space – Amnesty (PHOTOS/SATELLITE IMAGES) https://briefnews.eu/rohingya-ethnic-cleansing-visible-from-space-amnesty-photossatellite-images/ https://briefnews.eu/rohingya-ethnic-cleansing-visible-from-space-amnesty-photossatellite-images/#respond Fri, 15 Sep 2017 18:50:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rohingya-ethnic-cleansing-visible-from-space-amnesty-photossatellite-images/

Amnesty International has released a series of satellite images it says demonstrates that Myanmar’s military is carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslim population.

“The evidence is irrefutable – the Myanmar security forces are setting northern Rakhine State ablaze in a targeted campaign to push the Rohingya people out of Myanmar. Make no mistake: this is ethnic cleansing,” said Tirana Hassan, Amnesty International’s Crisis Response director in a statement.

“There is a clear and systematic pattern of abuse here. Security forces surround a village, shoot people fleeing in panic and then torch houses to the ground. In legal terms, these are crimes against humanity – systematic attacks and forcible deportation of civilians,” Hassan added.

A total of 80 sites have been set ablaze since August 24, Amnesty reports.

More than 370,000 Rohingya have fled into Bangladesh over a period of three weeks since August 25, amid an “orchestrated campaign” by the military to flush out what it brands “terrorists” following attacks against police by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

The rights group also claims that a combination of Myanmar security forces and paramilitary groups are shooting people as they try to flee.

“The government’s attempts to shift the blame to the Rohingya population are blatant lies. Our investigation makes it crystal clear that its own security forces, along with vigilante mobs, are responsible for burning Rohingya homes,” Hassan continued.

Smoke from the fires and persistent cloud cover throughout the monsoon season have limited visibility for outside observers, but the heat-detecting satellite images are able to penetrate the obstruction.

Images from the the mixed-ethnicity village of Inn Din purportedly show that Rohingya neighborhoods have been razed to the ground.

“When the military came, they started shooting at people who got very scared and started running. I saw the military shoot many people and kill two young boys. They used weapons to burn our houses. There used to be 900 houses in our village, now only 80 are left. There is no-one left to even bury the bodies,” one unnamed 48-year-old survivor reportedly told Amnesty after his village Yae Twin Kyun was attacked on September 8.

The scale of destruction cannot be independently verified due to governmental restrictions on outside access to the area, claims Amnesty. Human Rights Watch has also released similar satellite imagery which corroborates Amnesty’s findings.

“In a few days Myanmar will be discussed at the UN Human Rights Council,” Hassan said.

“This is an opportunity for the world to show that it has grasped the scope of the ongoing crisis and adopt a strong resolution to reflect this. The Council must also extend the mandate of the international Fact Finding Mission, which the Myanmar authorities should offer their full cooperation to.”

YANGON (Reuters) – China has endorsed Myanmar’s offensive against Rohini Muslim insurgents, though the UN secretary-general said the operation, which has forced nearly 400,000 people to flee to Bangladesh, was best described as “ethnic cleansing”.

The Myanmar military offensive in the western state of Rakhine was triggered by a series of guerrilla attacks on Aug. 25 on security posts and an army camp in which about a dozen people were killed.

“The stance of China regarding the terrorist attacks in Rakhine is clear, it is just an internal affair,” the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper on Thursday quoted China’s ambassador, Hong Liang, telling top government officials.

“The counter-attacks of Myanmar security forces against extremist terrorists and the government’s undertakings to provide assistance to the people are strongly welcomed.”

China competes with the United States for influence in Myanmar, which in 2011 began emerging from nearly 50 years of strict military rule and diplomatic and economic isolation.

Earlier this week, the Trump administration called for protection of civilians.

The violence in Rakhine State and the exodus of refugees is the most pressing problem Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced since becoming national leader last year.

Critics have called for her to be stripped of her Nobel prize for failing to do more to halt the strife which the UN rights agency said was a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council on Wednesday urged Myanmar authorities to end violence, adding that the situation was best described as ethnic cleansing.

“When one-third of the Rohingya population had to flee the country, could you find a better word to describe it?” he told a news conference in New York.

The government says it is targeting “terrorists,” while refugees say the offensive aims to push Rohingya out of Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

Numerous Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine state have been torched but authorities have denied that security forces or Buddhist civilians have been setting the fires. Instead, they blame the insurgents.

‘De-escalate’

But international pressure is growing on Myanmar.

The 15-member Security Council met behind closed doors on Wednesday, at the request of Sweden and Britain, to discuss the crisis for the second time since it began and agreed to publicly condemn the situation.

The council “expressed concern about reports of excessive violence during the security operations and called for immediate steps to end the violence in Rakhine, de-escalate the situation, re-establish law and order, ensure the protection of civilians … and resolve the refugee problem”.

British UN Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was the first statement from the Security Council on Myanmar in nine years. Such statements have to be agreed by consensus and Russia and China have traditionally protected Myanmar from any action.

Bangladesh says all the refugees will have to go home and has called for safe zones in Myanmar. It has said safe zones were not acceptable.

Aid agencies will have to step up operations “massively” in response to the refugee flow to Bangladesh, a senior UN official said on Wednesday, adding that the $ 77 million the United Nations had appealed for last week would not be enough to deal with the crisis.

There is no precise definition for ‘ethnic cleansing” and the term is not recognized as an independent crime under international law, according to the UN Office on Genocide Prevention.

The term appeared during the war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and it has been used in UN Security Council and General Assembly resolution, the office said.

It has also been acknowledged in judgments and indictments of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, although it did not constitute one of the counts for prosecution.

A UN commission of experts defined ethnic cleansing as “rendering an area ethnically homogeneous by using force or intimidation to remove persons of given groups”.

Knowing how to cleanse can be difficult at times

Are you confused about cleansing? From sonic brushes and foaming gels to exfoliating powders and cleansing oils, the number of products available can be baffling.

Good cleansing has the power to transform skin, removing make-up, pollutants and impurities.

It also allows the skin to breathe while hydrating and soothing skin cells. Finding the right cleansing routine can lead to a brighter, clearer and more youthful complexion.

Good cleansing has the power to transform skin

Using the right cleanser will also prepare the skin, helping products to penetrate more deeply for maximum effectiveness.

A recent study by Lancome revealed that women who cleansed their skin properly saw results from an anti-ageing product twice as quickly as those who didn’t. And a study by Olay found that 30 per cent more moisturiser was absorbed into well-cleansed skin.

Read our ultimate guide to cleansing properly below.

The most common mistake is using a product that is too harsh

Which Cleanser is for you?

The most common mistake is using a product that is too harsh. Choose a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the natural oils but will remove impurities without stressing or irritating, leaving the complexion refined and balanced.

Avoid cleansers that contain fragrance or parabens as these can be highly irritating to skin. Avoid using a bar of soap as the chances are it will be too alkaline for facial skin.

Wipes are handy when you’re on the go or as a first step to remove make-up but they should never replace a proper cleanser. The right formula depends on your skin type and personal preference.

Skin wipesGETTY

Wipes should never replace a proper cleanser

• OILY SKIN

Look for a gentle cleanser that will remove oil without stripping the skin as using a harsh cleanser can stimulate more oil production.

Try a gel or foaming cleanser such as Jan Marini Bioglycolic Cleanser, £25.60 (effortlessskin. com).

This soap-free formula contains glycolic acid to exfoliate and sorbitol, a natural humectant derived from berries to keep skin hydrated and smooth.

• DRY SKIN

It is best to opt for a gentle cleanser without chemicals, perfumes or colours. Try a non-foaming oil or cream cleanser such as Stemcellutions HSS Hydro Cleanser, £32 (harleystreetskincare. co.uk), from our skincare range.

It is free from harsh ingredients and does not dry or strip the skin. It is also excellent for removing make-up and contains stem cells to stimulate skin repair.

Woman washing her faceGETTY

For dry skin it is best to opt for a gentle cleanser without chemicals, perfumes or colours

• SENSITIVE SKIN

If you have skin that reacts or flares up easily, it’s best to choose a fragrance-free gentle cleansing milk or micellar water. Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micellar Water, £10.50 (boots.com) contains no harsh chemicals or detergents to irritate and inflame skin.

Instead, microscopic oil spheres remove make-up and grime so gently that even the most sensitive complexions are left feeling clean and hydrated.

• ON A BUDGET

There is no need to spend a fortune on a good cleanser. There are plenty of products that cleanse without drying skin and they won’t break the bank. Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser, £3.29 (boots.com) is a beauty classic that has stood the test of time.

It contains a blend of ingredients that soften the skin as it cleanses so the complexion feels smooth and nourished.

• MATURE SKIN

If you have ageing or mature skin, look for a cleanser with nourishing oils and other anti-ageing ingredients that can give your complexion the care it needs. Janjira Pomegranate & Acai Cleanser, £16 (janjira.co.uk) is packed with wrinkle-fighting antioxidants and has a rich, creamy texture that soothes the skin.

ONE CLEANSE OR TWO?

Double cleansing – one to remove make-up and one to cleanse your skin – has become popular but it’s not essential for everyone. How much you cleanse depends on your lifestyle and what you put on your skin. If you are at home, not wearing much make-up or live in the countryside away from pollution, a single cleanse morning and evening is fine.

If you wear heavy make-up, live in a city or commute then a double cleanse is worth doing as the first gets rids of make-up and product build-up while the second deep cleanses and nourishes.

Never cleanse more than twice a day or you risk stripping protective oils. Over-cleansing can lead to irritation, dryness and breakouts.
