Meg Griffin is on the naughty list this year, which is exactly where Santa Claus wants her. Sunday’s episode of Family Guy (9:30/8:30c) marks the Fox comedy’s annual Christmas episode, and as you’ll see in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek, it’s just as tasteful as you’d expect.

And because Family Guy never passes up the opportunity to make an ’80s movie reference, Meg greets Santa in her bedroom underneath a neon “Checks Cashed” sign, a la Risky Business.

Mila Kunis’ character develops an erotic interest in Ol’ St. Nick when she takes Stewie to see him at the mall, though the two have very different experiences meeting him. While Meg becomes infatuated with the jolly red guy, Stewie is left “entirely scarred” by the ordeal, turning to Brian for emotional support.

For what it’s worth, Meg’s apparent crush on Santa actually makes a lot of sense, especially when you recall the older men she’s pursued in the past. Local newsman Tom Tucker, former mayor Adam West and perv-next-door Glenn Quagmire have all caught her fancy. She also had a brief fling with Brian, and while she’s technically older than him, we’re choosing to convert his age to dog years.

Hit PLAY on the video above for a haunting first look at Family Guy‘s latest Christmas episode, then drop a comment with your thoughts below.

‘The Christmas Chronicles’ Trailer: Kurt Russell is Cool Santa Claus https://briefnews.eu/the-christmas-chronicles-trailer-kurt-russell-is-cool-santa-claus/ https://briefnews.eu/the-christmas-chronicles-trailer-kurt-russell-is-cool-santa-claus/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 14:45:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-christmas-chronicles-trailer-kurt-russell-is-cool-santa-claus/ christmas chronicles trailer

Kurt Russell is the coolest Santa Claus you’ll ever see in The Christmas Chronicles trailer. Will this Netflix family film be any good? I don’t know. But at least Russell is clearly having fun playing the role of Jolly Old Saint Nick. In the film, a pair of kids have to help Santa save Christmas, as seems to be the standard set-up for these types of stories. Watch The Christmas Chronicles trailer below.

The Christmas Chronicles Trailer

One thing makes The Christmas Chronicles worth seeing: Kurt Russell. Russell, sporting a glorious beard, is giving the role of Santa Claus his all. His gruff, hip Santa looks like he’s a few seconds from taking a swig of whiskey from a flask, and I’m here for it. This holiday adventures hails from producer Chris Columbus, the director of Home Alone and the first Harry Potter film, and the film certainly seems to be bringing Columbus’ blockbuster mentality to this flick. It looks more slick and more action-packed than your standard Netflix family fare.

In The Christmas Chronicles, sister and brother Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis),  hatch a “Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera” that “turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa – as you’ve never seen him before – and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it’s too late.”

Yeah, okay: that plot is stupid, and sounds like 90 other Christmas movies about Santa Claus. But again: I can’t get over Russell’s cool Santa. Neither can director Clay Kaytis, who said:

“No one is better suited than Kurt Russell to bring our version of a rugged, charismatic, and hilarious Santa Claus to life. From our first meeting, he completely threw himself into this iconic role – and grew an impressive beard in the process. It has been a dream come true to work with Kurt in creating what I believe will be the new definition of Santa Claus for generations to come.”

Chris Columbus added:

“Kurt is the definitive Santa Claus. Charismatic, tough when needed with a wicked sense of humor. We’re really excited for audiences to see his performance onscreen and hope The Christmas Chronicles becomes a timeless classic.”

In summation: just watch this movie for Kurt Russell.

The Christmas Chronicles arrives on Netflix on November 22, 2018.

What it’s really like to be a professional Santa Claus https://briefnews.eu/what-its-really-like-to-be-a-professional-santa-claus/ https://briefnews.eu/what-its-really-like-to-be-a-professional-santa-claus/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 16:20:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-its-really-like-to-be-a-professional-santa-claus/ Santa Jim BostonCourtesy of Jim Manning

Not everyone can play Santa Claus for a living.

Sure, anyone can don a Santa hat, beard, and suit and invite parents to plop kids on their lap.

But to play a convincing Santa Claus that kids will forever cherish, and to make a living at it, you must become Santa Claus — and that process takes a lot of work.

For Jim Manning, a full-time children’s entertainer who has played Santa Jim in the Boston area for 14 years, learning how to become the perfect Father Christmas meant attending a couple of Santa Claus schools, picking up tricks of the trade from other Santas, and learning the nuances of the job through trial and error.

When he’s not making appearances at holiday parties dressed as the man in red or the guest of honor at the City of Boston Tree Lighting celebration, he keeps his skills sharp 11 months of the year as “Jungle Jim” of Jungle Jim’s of Boston.

This professional Santa understands the value of a top-notch beard — no straggly, wispy nonsense or anything that could easily get pulled off — and knows that keeping kids happy requires getting on their level.

And perhaps most importantly, to truly transform yourself into the magical elf, Manning tells Business Insider that you have to really love kids — and believe that it’s your job to be a beacon of hope and joy to them no matter what.

Below, Manning shares his personal journey of being a professional Santa Claus:

What exactly does a pro Santa do?

I’ve been a professional private-events Santa Claus for 13 years. Generally, there are two kinds of Santas — mall Santas and private-event Santas. Mall Santas tend to be older gentlemen — you get to sit in the mall, you might get the photo, and that’s that.

But mostly what I do is corporate and private events. I’m the official Santa Claus for the city of Boston’s tree lighting, so I do the tree lighting on TV. I was on the cover of the Red Sox Christmas card this year. Most of my work is generally one-hour visits in people’s homes, corporate office parties, and they’ll have kids there, and sometimes it’s just adults.

And I’m a younger Santa — I’m only 40 — and I’m very high-energy, so I tend to put on a little bit of a show: The Night Before Christmas, and caroling, and magic. A lot of people think being Santa Claus means just showing up, sitting on the couch, and letting kids sit in your lap. But what I do is a lot more.

What does your busy season look like?

The busy season is December, Thanksgiving to Christmas. We start receiving calls and emails in August to book events. Some people will book from the year before. But the real majority of the requests start coming in October and November. And a lot of last-minute requests come in too. The real season starts to ramp up after Thanksgiving.

The first week of December is more promotional work — a lot of photo shoots. I did a photo shoot for Legal Sea Foods, where they had me as Santa Claus taking photos of their clam chowder or their lobster. Drug stores, car dealerships — they’ll bring me in to set the tone for the season and whatnot.

Then toward the middle of December, that’s when I start getting into more corporate parties, private parties. And then as we get closer to Christmas Eve, the majority of my events are parties in people’s homes.

Christmas Eve is the busiest day. I’ll do 10 appearances. This year, my first visit is at 11 a.m. and my last visit is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Most weekdays are two to three visits. Weekends are much busier. Sunday I did eight different visits. I’ll have five or six days off somewhere in between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

How does it compare to what you do for the rest of the year?

December is the busiest month for my business. We will bring in about 30% of our income for Santa Boston/Jungle Jim’s, my children’s-entertainment business, during this time. For the rest of the year I’m doing balloon magic shows as Jungle Jim.

During the summer, as Jungle Jim, I’ll do 150 performances, most in libraries.

The good thing about being Santa is I don’t have as much prep work before an event. It takes me about a half-hour to get into the suit, but then I show up and I am Santa. Whereas with the magic shows and everything, they involve a lot of set up and prep work.

That being said, we devote a lot of man-hours in preparation for December. Pretty much October through December, I’d say 75% of our energy is devoted toward Santa Claus.

Kurt Russell Will Play Santa Claus For Netflix https://briefnews.eu/kurt-russell-will-play-santa-claus-for-netflix/ https://briefnews.eu/kurt-russell-will-play-santa-claus-for-netflix/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 18:01:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kurt-russell-will-play-santa-claus-for-netflix/ Kurt Russell Santa Claus movie

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I’m telling you why: Kurt Russell is coming to town. Russell has just joined the cast of an untitled holiday movie in which he’ll be playing Kris Kringle himself, Santa Claus. The plot involves two kids who accidentally crash Santa’s sleigh, causing a major problem on Christmas Eve. Wacky hijinks follow. Read more about the Kurt Russell Santa Claus movie below.

Kurt Russell is about to join the ranks of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Ed Asner, Leslie Nielson, Paul Giamatti, Eric Roberts and many, many more as he slips on a bright red suit, grows a big white beard, and proceeds to force eight magic reindeer to do his bidding on Christmas Eve. That’s right, the Hateful Eight and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. actor will be playing none other than Santa Claus in a currently untitled Netflix holiday movie. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Russell will star along young actors Judah Lewis (The Babysitter) Darby Camp (Big Little Lies) in a film that will mix live-action and CGI elements.

The Angry Birds Movie director Clay Kaytis is helming the film. Lewis and Camp will play two scamps who want to prove Santa Claus is real by capturing him on film, sort of like Bigfoot. Somehow, this plan backfires and causes Santa’s sleigh to crash in Chicago. The kids then have to help Santa save Christmas, presumably after they sample some of that famous Chicago deep dish pizza.

This sort of sounds like the plot of The Santa Clause, only instead of Tim Allen as Santa, it’s Kurt Russell. That’s a big upgrade. The script for the film, which was originally titled 12/24, was penned by Matt Lieberman, who wrote the script for the long-in-development, still unmade animated reboot of The Addams Family. Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, is producing. Filming is set to begin in January, with an eye towards a 2018 holiday release.

This is obviously going to be aimed at younger viewers, but I’ll probably watch at least some of this film just to see Russell take on the highly renowned role of Santa Claus. Russell continues to be one of our most dependable actors and he’s experienced something of a resurgence lately, appearing in much-buzzed-about brutal westerns The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk, the Fast and the Furious franchise, and big Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

‘Room 104’ Review: ‘Boris’ is an Immigrant Story…With a Pantless Santa Claus https://briefnews.eu/room-104-review-boris-is-an-immigrant-storywith-a-pantless-santa-claus/ https://briefnews.eu/room-104-review-boris-is-an-immigrant-storywith-a-pantless-santa-claus/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 19:11:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/room-104-review-boris-is-an-immigrant-storywith-a-pantless-santa-claus/ Room 104 Boris Review

(Each week, we’ll kick off discussion about Room 104 by answering one simple question: what’s the strangest thing in Room 104?)

Room 104 has hosted ghosts, voyeurs, and Mormons. But until this week, no celebrities. Enter Boris, an internationally famous tennis star who’s having an erratic evening. Through his unlikely friendship with a housekeeper, Boris faces some long buried trauma. But not before he dons an unusual costume.

What’s the Strangest Thing in Room 104? Pantless Santa Claus

“Boris” immediately builds up its titular character with swelling patriotic music and text that relays the legend of tennis prodigy Boris Karlovy (Konstantin Lavysh). At the age of six, he moved from Croatia to Russia to turn pro. By the time he was 17, he had clinched #14 on the USTA Rankings. John McEnroe had some very nice things to say about him. But this grand image is instantly shattered when Boris busts open the door of Room 104, dropping his tennis gear and guzzling a bottle of vodka.

Boris is having a rough night — the kind with imaginary conversations and lots of drunken stumbling. Boris repeatedly slips into Russian to address a strict “boss” who isn’t there, but who clearly left a mark on him. He also keeps watching old clips of himself on an iPad. Then he finds a Santa suit in the room, and things truly get weird.

Boris loves the Santa suit. He quickly puts on the top and starts talking to nonexistent children. (He does not pull on the pants.) Next, he injects himself with steroids. But that’s all monotony compared to his depraved final act: constructing a lady out of pillows, a visor, and a pair of panties so he can have sex with “her,” while wearing the Santa coat. A knock at the door interrupts this twisted holiday tableau.

It’s a housekeeper, warning him to stop smoking or risk a fine. Boris doesn’t care about the extra charge, but he desperately wants company. After promising $ 300 and to put on some pants, he manages to convince Rose (Veronica Falcon) to stay for one drink.

Rose apologizes for leaving the previous guest’s Santa suit in the room; a call from her son distracted her while she was cleaning. She offers to remove it but Boris doesn’t mind one bit. He just wants to chat with his new pal. He asks Rose about herself, and she asks him what he does. Unfortunately, that’s the wrong icebreaker. Boris has to explain that he lost a tournament today, on the first round. “I lose all the time,” he says. “I let everybody down.” He spirals into a freakout, alternately screaming and sobbing. He pauses only to run to the bathroom to puke, passing out in the middle of traumatic flashbacks to his war-torn homeland.

When Boris wakes up, it’s the next morning. He’s sitting in the bathtub, and Rose is dabbing his forehead. She asks him about what he kept yelling last night, which forces Boris to share a dark secret about his past. Rose proves to be just the sympathetic ear Boris needed all these years. But their heart-to-heart is cut short by a knock on the door. It’s the man who left the Santa suit. Before he takes it back, Rose asks if Boris can buy it from him. The suit is apparently not for sale, but the gesture touches Boris. He insists Rose take his tennis bag and gear for her son and then lies down, sinking into a peaceful sleep.

Boris and Rose

Immigrant Stories

Both Rose and Boris left their homes to build new identities in new countries. Rose never explains why she left Mexico, but all she wants is to secure a green card so she can live in America without fear of deportation. Rose is a (seemingly single) mom, so her anxiety is especially heightened. “If I get it, I’ll feel safe,” she tells Boris. “I’m a Mexican living in the U.S., I’m a slave. They can take me away from my son any time.”

When Boris hears this, he’s furious on her behalf, hinting at a similarly scary immigrant experience. As his confession the next morning reveals, Boris left Croatia over horrific circumstances. When Boris was six, the Serbs invaded his neighborhood, bombing the area to bits. They also rounded up his parents and cousins, killing them all. He only survived because he was in an empty pool at the time, practicing his backswing with his uncle. Overwhelmed with guilt, he threw himself into tennis, hoping to justify his existence. But he could not repay the debt he owed his uncle, the “boss” he references. Rose tells him she’s sorry about what happened to his family. “No one’s ever said that,” he says. “We don’t talk about them.”

Boris has been carrying an enormous pain he couldn’t share, but so is Rose. In Room 104, they find a safe space to break the silence.

nightstand

Mind the Nightstand

Early into his drunken evening, Boris stumbles and whacks his head against the nightstand. Although he laughs it off, this is not a gentle fall. It echoes the dramatic final act of “Missionaries,” when Joseph nearly dies from a similar head injury. I don’t know if all Room 104 visitors are this clumsy, but please people: watch out for sharp corners.

Melissa McCarthy Must Save Christmas as ‘Margie Claus’ https://briefnews.eu/melissa-mccarthy-must-save-christmas-as-margie-claus/ https://briefnews.eu/melissa-mccarthy-must-save-christmas-as-margie-claus/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 14:57:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/melissa-mccarthy-must-save-christmas-as-margie-claus/ Melissa McCarthy - Margie Claus

Making a holiday movie is rite of passage for on-screen talents in Hollywood. Eventually, almost every actor or actress makes an attempt at starring in a holiday movie because it’s one of those things that’s guaranteed to bring in residual checks every years when networks air them around Thanksgiving and Christmas. That time has come for Melissa McCarthy.

The breakout supporting star of Bridesmaids has turned into quite the leading lady as one of the most talented and popular female comedy stars on the scene right now. Now, Melissa McCarthy will take her star power to Christmas with a holiday musical comedy called Margie Claus.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced New Line Cinema picked up Margie Claus, which will be co-written by USA’s Benched creator Damon Jones and Melissa McCarthy’s husband and frequent collaborator Ben Falcone, who is also producing and directing the project through the couple’s On the Day production banner.

Margie Claus finds the jolly man in chief, Santa Claus, missing while he’s out delivering presents on Christmas Eve. So his wife Margie Claus must leave the North Pole for the first time in decades to lead a rescue team to rescue Santa Claus and save Christmas.

The tone that New Line is going for is something akin to their modern holiday classic Elf starring Will Ferrell. That’s a pretty high bar to set, especially since holiday comedies are not easily turned into instant classics. In fact, most holiday comedies are not very good, but that doesn’t stop them from being shown around the holidays.

While I’m all for Melissa McCarthy making a holiday comedy, especially one giving her a musical debut, her collaborations with husband Ben Falcone have left plenty to be desired. Both The Boss and Tammy were written and directed by Ben Falcone and starred Melissa McCarthy. While the former was a vast improvement over the latter, these two working together feels like a step backwards for McCarthy. Their collaborations often find her playing it safe by falling back on her schtick of being rough around the edges and inappropriate. Their penchant for slapstick comedy on those movies is dispiriting as well, and since this is meant to be a family comedy, I’m worried we’ll get even more of that. But maybe their next collaboration, The Life of the Party, will change my mind.

Plus, let’s not forget that there are two more Santa Claus centric holiday comedies in the works. There’s Nicole that will see Anna Kendrick playing Santa Claus’ sister who is forced to take over the family business and Kevin Hart will play a workaholic father who learns a lesson from Santa Claus in Dashing Through the Snow. Is there enough room for all of these holiday movies? We’ll find out.

Margie Claus is currently set for release on November 15, 2019.
